Bravo, Frem, and I've been preachin' it for decades now. Carmakers go on about "passive" safety measures, but nobody ever wants to talk about the most effective ACTIVE safety devices: a nimble, quick car and a well-trained, attentive driver.

There are no stats for the accidents that DIDN'T happen. FAA tracks "near miss" incidents for aircraft, but nobody tracks that info for automobiles. Might make it harder to sell you on the latest and greatest Bloatmaster 3.5XL Tin Shitbox® if they did...

I can attest to this. My GTI has had more than few problems lately and can be a real pain in the ass, but it's never not been nimble and responsive. That little car may have saved my life twice by quickly turning and darting around this asshole who pulled out of a parking lot without looking (and while the sun was in my eyes) and being able to stop on a dime, pretty damn literally.

One of my redneckish relatives breeds what he calls "Land Pirahna" or just "Critters", a smallish, fluffy little muttmix that's as ferocious as anything alive - and his reasoning was that you can catch a big dog asleep, and larger dogs are often lazy and/or hard to care for... but these lil bastards are unlikely to all be asleep at the same time, and will bumrush in a pack, so you can't wipe them out with a single hit, they make a gawdawful amount of noise, and three to five of em can fuck you up completely even FASTER than a large dog.

Consider well your fate after one of em drops you by savaging your achilles tendon....

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Yeah wulf, we know - plus hippies, liberals, people who think whites still have an advantage in society over people of color (except the Chinese, they are the NEW - and improved - white!), anyone you think might be a feminist, democrat, or literate, teachers, women who work, people who don't follow your rules, the disabled ...

It would be a shorter list if you would just post the people you DON'T hate.

Exactly. And with just a little bit of aftermarket tweaking to the suspension, it can not only stop on a dime, but you'll be able to feel whether it's heads or tails!

I'm starting a new policy, its the Riona says whatever the rut she wants system. I'm not new anymore so I think I can now.

For starters, Happy Trader, you're my pal, but I'm not getting rid of my self chosen Irish accent for you, or anyone. I chose it because I love Irish things and if someone doesn't like it they don't have to be my phone friend, pure and simple. Its not going anywhere.

And energy, yeah I do mention it in regards to people and places, not in a new agy way, but in a way of expressing what I'm feeling to people, and I like doing it.

Next I totally agree about those medicine ads, I feel that they have no business putting ads out about prescription medicines on TV, "ask your doctor if --- is right for you" Pa-lease, I wish those would go back to being banned.

I hate tipping, did you know that in Ireland you don't have to tip? Its amazing, so wonderful and free, I know that the reason we have to tip in the US is because the waitors and waitresses don't get paid a good enough wage, so we have to make up the slack, but I wish they got paid more so I didn't have to take care of it, arrrrrrrrgh. What irritates me just as much is that no one seems to understand what I mean, its so ingrained into people that they must tip and they do it without complaint and think I'm a barbarian if I do complain. I do tip of course, but grudgingly, wishing that there would come a day when they got paid more so I didn't have to pay them.

Okay, and here's my thing that I don't like: How hybrid cars don't make noise, no one understands how hideous of a problem it is for me/anyone else in my situation, really dangerous, the good news is that they are putting in a minimum noise requirement bill in congress, huzah!

Aw curses!
Does it apply on private property ?

There's been some discussion of getting my lazy broken ass a patrol cruiser since my physical condition is only very barely up to the job any more, and I was so looking FORWARD to sneaking up on people (I have a set of Nightvision Goggles) who were casing the place with ill intentions and then giving them a dose of the highbeams, lightbar and the flashers all at once, hee hee hee.

Which is maybe a little bit less evil than coming up six inches behind them and going "BOO!", as I have done occassionally... it's funny to watch the young ones freak out and run screaming.

PS. This is why most of the local hoodlums avoid this place like the plague, it's one thing to be chased off, another to be counted coup on like that.

Examples: Mercedes, Lexus, Lemonade (pronounced LeMONde), Shaniqua (in fact, anything ending in "QUA"), Porsche...

-Those stupid bottles of windshield washing fluid that fill your cars tank, but then leave JUST ENOUGH that you can't throw it away. So you drive around with about 2 inches of windshield washing fluid until its time to fill it back up again. Then, oh goody, you have just enough to get you to the gas station to buy ANOTHER poorly designed amount.

-Air filling stations that charge you 75 cents. Yes, it cost money to recharge the tanks, but 75 cents?

- Bagless vacumes. They DO NOT WORK. "Nuff said.

lol, sorry to offend, of course there are always exceptions to the blatant generalizations this thread is full of. I didn't bother with specifics too much, but in your case, you do actually sing traditional Irish songs, so you have reason to use the dialect artistically and that is enough for it not to be annoying or pretentious to me. 'Course, everyone should feel free to do whatever the rut they want, no need for my approval lol. You just keep staying shiny!

I dunno, some of those offbeat names aren't worse than the traditional tripe - one of Augustus's group is named Orangelo (yeah, I know, Orange Jello) but it does have a cool kind of roll to it, and the big bastard is something of a casanova besides - I don't rag him too much about it though, cause he's quite supportive of his two kids and their moms even if he didn't marry either of em.

Yeah, I'm visually impaired and so those quiet silent vehicles really piss me off and scare me.

As for Frem's scare tactics, yeah its fun to scare people, my little brother loves to sneak up on me and scare me and make me jump and sometimes scream, he enjoys it so I don't mind. I'm easy to scare. I hope you don't scare your folk though, especially when they first come to you. If they've been around you for a while and you deem it won't be hurtful to scare them than go ahead, but I hope you don't do it to the ones it wouldn't be fun for. Frem, what is your establishment called? Does it have some sort of website? How would someone go about learning more about helping etc.?

You know what frosts my socks? My best friend's husband, that's what. Anyone else have a problem with best friends' spouses? I love her so I want her to be happy, but pa-lease, he's my least favorite person I know.

Well, the ones I spook deliberately are the ones scouting this area for larceny, so I don't feel too bad about it - if I am coming up on someone innocent unawares, I'll drag my heel or something, rattle my keys, make some small noise so that they realize I am coming - doesn't always work, though, some people get all focused on whatever they're doing and pay no mind to anything else, what I call "being in the HUA Zone".
(as in Head Up Ass)

As for organizational names, the original security company name went with the split between those of us who wanted to stick with what we were doing, and those who wanted to work for DepHomeSec/TSA, which amounted to an epic disaster for them, currently we're operating under the name of the realty corp which is our primary customer, since it allows us to collectively handle payroll and health insurance without as much hassle, streamlineing the whole process.

The advocacy setup has two distinct factions, one being the enforcement arm or "muscle", as one would call it, and that is known as "V.I." the meaning of those initials tending to depend on whim, who is using them and what is going on at the time.
The other, is known as CoTL, or Church of The Lost, initially called The Church Of Lost Children.
(*laugh*, I hadn't realized there's a faction in the game Fallout called this!)

And no, there's never been an internet presence, nor is there likely to be, but if you want to know things, you'd have to be a little more specific in your query - I can direct one to resources, but it helps to have a better idea of what you'd like to know.

For a general overview and concept, CITIVAS/ChildTrauma and Doc Perry are your go-to-sources.
http://childtrauma.org/
http://teacher.scholastic.com/professional/bruceperry/index.htm

And while she has passed on to the hereafter, useful is the work of Alice Miller.
http://www.alice-miller.com/index_en.php

Also, if you're ever interested in the more boot-up-ass aspect of things, the work of Maia Szalavitz is worth a look, but I don't think she has a website, per se, and Jordan Riak, since Shelby and Sue have retired from the field of battle around the time WWASPS collapsed.
(I plan to stand on the grave till I am sure beyond all doubt it's dead and gonna stay that way, myself.)

And that oughta be enough to get you started - CITIVAS/ChildTrauma has especially good resources for caregivers which you should find most useful, although they seem to be in the middle of a website redesign at the moment.

Seriously? Those "stupid bottles" are generally measured out to ONE GALLON. Seems a pretty standard amount. Maybe you should rail at all the various carmakers who refuse to make their washer-fluid reservoirs hold a full gallon...

-Hybrids. My first car, a 4-banger got 36 mpg on the highway. And 26 in the city. THis was back in 1992. Hybrids, on the other hand, BRAG when they get that kind of mileage.

How does that work? I mean, are hybrids not suppossed to get BETTER MPG than the cars of yore?

Actually, Wulfie, most hybrids get far better city mileage than highway mileage. Which is pretty handy, considering that for most people, most of their driving comes in driving around town, commuting, etc., NOT driving on the highway.

As to why cars aren't getting better mileage overall, talk to the Big Three, and ask them why they consistently lobby against raising CAFE standards, and why those standards didn't go up a bit from the late 90s to nearly 2010.

Also, have you WEIGHED a new car lately? A new Miata or Mini weighs more than 2600 pounds, compared with my old '85 CRX, which had a curb weight around 1700.

People have this idiotic belief that bigger and heavier = safer, but by this logic, we should all be driving 18-wheelers and Greyhound buses.

Frem, thanks for those, I was so sure you'd give me some sort of "its a secret" copout, thanks for not doing that because I would have been irritated. I'm going to look at the CITIVAS in a few days, you said their site was having troubles so I'll look another day when it might be fixed. So if my little brother got kidnapped for instance, and the police didn't know what to do, and I wanted an organization like yours to rescue him but I wasn't on this forum, so didn't know you, who would I call to get in touch with you guys to go save him? Note that this is completely hypethetical, my brother is safe and sound here at home with us.

You know what gets on my nerves? People who complain about how selfish everyone else is, but won't admit that they themselves are selfish too. I'm selfish and I admit it, people who piss about others being selfish but won't admit to their own faults are just irritating. Note that I'm not talking about anyone here.

Well, I used to be a lot more cagey about some things, but these days most of the folk who would have been a threat are either pushin up daisies, in prison, destitute, or otherwise unable to retaliate - not to mention that I am not technically in charge any more and harming me will have no effect on the organization I built.
(other than making them want heads on pikes, but that's a given)
I wanted to build a better future, not a monument to personal arrogance.

There are some things I might still be cagey about, not only for legal reasons but because there really ARE things in this world that the knowledge of, at least of the details, can pyschologically harm people - that they exist is enough to know without grinding their pysche with the horror, yanno ?

As for your hypothetical, nowadays, a situation like that - well, the internet is a wonderful place sometimes...
Look how many injustices have been righted by Digg, Goonswarm, even 4chan ?
But in the case of trickier situations, at least way back when, it was a matter of us finding you - the girl we pulled out of High Impact, for example, her family was looking for outright mercs, when we caught wind of it and stepped in to help.

There's good reason for that, and many advocacies or activists still work that way, because of the level of scammery and entrapment (by both so-called law enforcement AND criminals, if one makes such distinction in the first place) makes operating any other way a complete liability.

Case in point, a Massachusetts service provider is up to their neck in trouble cause of HOW american law enforcement used their product, and then threw the blame and consequences back on them.
http://www.thesmokinggun.com/documents/internet/undercover-web-site-de
railed-hosting-firm

(There's more to the story, but I am using the SG link cause it's the most informative without getting into some pretty ugly details...)
Some of this stuff, oh how to explain - it'd be like police offering free beer at a bar and then letting folk drive off before busting them with DUI, creating crime where it'd otherwise not exist, since the priority has changed from Crime Prevention to Law Enforcement, and all the money and glory is in the latter.

Knocking off these sites prevents the crime, as Marcus Lawson first showed (and wound up forcibly retired from US Customs over) and Jenny Granholm followed up to good effect, and the way to do that is by cutting off the money and going after the billing systems.
No crime, no bust, no glory - so they've taken to creating it rather than fighting it, all of the predatory community (which exists, is well entrenched, and far more technologically capable than law enforcement thanks in part to AOL protecting and assisting them to become so) damn well knows these sites are a setup, but the mere existence of them serves as a vehicle to validate themselves and each other in a circle jerk of ego stroking not too different than american right wing politics, and in some cases rather more closely related than that similarity alone, and don't even get me started about North Carolina...

Anyhow, what they did to the provider is a bit like commandeering your car, using it to commit a crime, and then leaving YOU holding the bag - just as our so-called protectors are a font of terrorism, our so-called law enforcement is a veritable font of crime.

And because of that, any grey-market or shadow-side operations aren't going to advert or share contact data openly, the only way to get in contact is to get word out, and let them find you - which they'll do, and will contact you only after doing a thorough check to make sure you are not bait, a setup, etc etc...

Given your interest though, I honestly don't think that end of it is all that relevant to you anyways, and for most folk it's better to focus on prevention and treatment than get down into the cesspool with a tire iron and a grudge - you have to be more than a little crazy to try that, and more than a little evil to survive it, since the folks who do seem most resilient to such horrors are some of the nastiest folk I've ever known.

Amusing, in an ironic sorta way, I still have one of those things around here - from before telephones all came pre-rigged with trace capacity via CALEA, and you could subvert lock-n-trace by grounding the voltage... it was handy to not hand out a voiceprint to folks who had a tendancy to arrest folk REPORTING certain crimes rather than deal with em.

Mine though is light on the distort, just enough to not give a clear voiceprint, and sounds kinda vader-overlordish rather than that horribly "crunchy" electro-distorted one.
