Meaningless distinctions. Military disengagement and total apathy to the internal affairs of other, weaker nations is essentially the same thing as isolationist protectionism. I like to think of my beloved America as a hammer, or an aidsy wiener--it ought to destroy whatever it touches. I encourage you to experience more brain damage, be it through huffing gasoline or smashing your skull into things. Only then will you see the true essence of things.

Meaningless distinctions? Is that not all we have? Distinctions? I'd ask this...is unleaded as good as diesel?.....huff away. Bad Boy

I accept your explanation, CTTS. Give it was responding to my post, I assumed it was directed mostly at me. I still disagree, however; just as you weren't speaking of ME, my post was referring to the segment (majority?) of people out there hollering for "no government", etc., who I believe are unaware of the consequences. I wasn't referring to anyone here or to those who have given it thought. Thanx for clearing that up.

Not only do I think a large part of them just grab placards and run off to rallies and scream and applaud without thinking of the consequences, I believe they don't think about MUCH, but just react emotionally.

Most of the people cheering for limited government these days don't really want it in any consistent way. They want low taxes and their own privileged positions maintained as the status quo (by government).
That's more the way I think, and I agree, by "privileged positions" I would be talking about SSI, Medicare, all the things the government DOES provide about which they have not given thought. Not that they are "privileged" as we consider same in this country, but that we all have privileges provided by the government which other counties do not.

Yeah, well, consider this...

What if China, Russia, Canada, Mexico and the United Nations all attacked us and had at least the tenative support of most of the rest of the planet, politically, logicistally, socially ?
Think we'd last three years ?

Cause that was the situation they found themselves in, what with the betrayal by two of thier so-called allies, and facing what amounted to three other armies in the bargain, which jack shit for personnel, equipment and supplies.

To date, no Anarchist collective has ever failed internally, they've all been smashed to bits by the external governments their very existence threatens - except maybe Freetown Christiania, which I do not consider such cause they pay tribute to the State, mind you.

And yet, despite being pounded into the ground militarily every time they stick their heads up, since Governments consider them a plague, they are indeed as insidious as one, cause that influence has time and time again held on and prospered, Mondragon came out of that, and certainly there's a lot of that sentiment in Argentina - thing is, you concentrate in one place and declare yourselves, it's asking to be bombed or nuked, so why do so ?

The "did-not-work" argument though, that's a lot like blowing up a beavers attempts to build a dam every time they start, and then saying that beavers cannot build a dam, you see ?

A much better take on the fallacy of that kind of argument occurs in the Judge Dredd comic books, where the Judges subvert, infiltrate and sabotage a movement for democracy, and then hold up it's failure as "proof" that democracy doesn't work.

_Democratic_March

Thing is though, it's NOT a form of Government, is it in fact the opposite, and has no place in the comparison, it's something you decide yourself, each and every time you find yourself confronted by a rule or law that is counterproductive, useless, harmful to yourself or others - and decide whether to obey it or not.
And most especially WHY.

From that point of view, we're all Anarchists, at least a little bit, ain't we ?

Oh, and a word about "entitlements" real quick, just a thought I had on the way out the door here.

Ok, for a FACT - we have the ability to feed the hungry, to heal the sick, each and every one regardless of financial or social class, whatever bullshit standard of "eligibility" one wishes to imagine, we HAVE THE RESOURCES TO DO IT, period.

And when you look at it from a straight moral perspective, to not do so, for whatever lameass EXCUSE you wanna hide behind, is an act of pure malice.

We can, and we should, anything less is inhumane.

frem

radical idea:

helping the needy should fall on those.in the business.of.providing the needed service?

restaurants prepare and excess of food, rarely does everything get eaten. heres a thought. rearrange the whole food production so that the extra foodstuffs dont come to your table until you ask for them. otherwise they go in the fridge. serve it after hours to whomever is willing to clean up, etc.

similarly. how many open motel rooms are there. need a place to stay, how about four to a room. and in exchange, you clean up.

society *could* be designed for everyone, it just aint

It used to be, much more than now, I think.

When I was in social work in my youth, that was a big part of what I did: hook up homeless Vietnam veterans with businesses in the community. There was an old lady at our agency who knew everyone. She would call all these business people she knew and arrange for a free motel night here, a free meal there. Just people helping people. That is what real social work should be about.

Yup, CTTS is right, except I don't think it's "less" than in times past. Some new and different ideas, some the same. There are now agencies just to match people/businesses up with ways they might help the disadvantaged.

Many restaurants provide food for the poor, and more do so all the time. Yes, it should be begun at the very start of agribusiness, but something is better than nothing.

And I agree with Sig about a society. If left in the hands of business, however, and without societal pressure, I doubt much would happen.

Okay, so why SHOULDN'T Ron Paul be President?

Well, because he seems to be able to only get about five votes when he runs, that's why. And last time I checked, nobody not named George W. Bush ever got to be President of the U.S. with a mere 5 votes! ;)
