The United States is beefing up its firepower in Afghanistan by employing heavily armored tanks in Afghanistan for the first time in the nine-year war, a military spokesman said Friday.

The U.S. Marine Corps plans to use a company of M1A1 Abrams tanks in restive Helmand province by early spring, said Marine Maj. Gabrielle Chapin.

The M1A1 tank is the fastest and most deadly ground combat weapons system available. It will allow for more aggressive missions while mitigating risks to U.S. forces, the military said.

U.S. forces used the tanks to battle insurgents successfully in Iraq's Anbar province, Chapin said.

"They bring superior optics, maneuverability and precision firepower that will enable us to isolate insurgent forces from key population centers and provide the ability to project power into insurgent safe havens," he said.

Other coalition forces, including those from Canada, already have used tanks in Afghanistan.

The decision comes as Afghanistan tops the agenda at the NATO summit that starts Friday in Lisbon, Portugal, and amid a public dispute between Afghan President Hamid Karzai and NATO leaders over military strategy.

Yes, it must be hysterical for them. To see us wasting our "military might" in a fight we'll have to give up in the end must just having them chortling while they watch the news...don't you think it would be "drinking their vodka" rather than eating popcorn, tho'?

I was listening to a debate about Afghanistan today, and the guy arguing that the U.S. has the upper hand in Afghanistan actually tried to use the Russian invasion and occupation as GOOD examples. He was saying that we currently have 30,000 troops there, and that the Russians approached it the right way, by sending more than 150,000 troops in, and that we should learn from how they did it.

It was, to say the least, unintentionally hilarious of him to defend our actions by saying that we should learn the positive lessons from the Russian invasion. And it was sad that he was in effect comparing us to the old totalitarian Soviet Union, and didn't even see the pathetic irony of doing so.

Here's the key to sending U.S. tanks to Afghanistan: You'd kill more insurgents by simply dropping the tanks from cargo planes on enemy encampments, without parachutes, than you will by sending tanks up those mountain passes.

*facepalm*

Fuckin idiots.

Firstoff, only thing tanks are good for is shooting the hell out of other tanks - tell me, do YOU see any tanks in Afganistan ?

Not to mention between the sand, and terrain issues this is almost as bad as trying to use them in an urban environ - lots of places the other guys can go to ground that you cannot get to in a tank.

But the worst of it all ?

M1A1 tanks cost millions of dollars, EACH.
RPG-7s are dirt cheap, and they got a damn lot of em, not to mention whatever the Russians are no doubt selling them by the bundle, laughing up their sleeve the whole time.

All this does is put a juicier target right in their optimum range and allow them to hurt us more - any general who doesn't know this oughta be fired, any general who does should be hung.

Cause that's what this is, a deliberate hanging out to dry of those poor tankers so that the powers that be can point to how "dangerous" the Taliban is so they can continue to attempt justification of a war that had no purpose in the first place, keep the warfare-welfare coming in, cause yanno, they're gonna need new tanks, you see ?

Might as well drive the damn things off a cliff, it'd be more merciful, and don't even get me started on what happens to the crew of a tank hit with an RPG...

DT, I tend to agree with you. "For public consumption", in other words. The idea of tanks in guerilla warfare is patently absurd.

On the other hand, it'll no doubt be a nice gimme for the military-industrial complex, yes?

I *hoped* he would be different, but I didn't expect him to be.

I think he has some good intentions (like shutting down Guantanamo), but the office of the Presidency simply isn't powerful enough to actually implement good intentions.

All presidents are warmongers, in one way or another. Maybe it is to appease the public thirst for blood, I dunno. That is just a fact of life, unfortunately.

He talketh the talk, be do not walketh the walk. I'm sticking by my conclusion: "Meet the new boss, same as the old boss." Of course, he warned us he would be, in that Lara Logan interview.

He's just the frontman for team Clinton-Bush, even if he didn't want to be. I know that there are parts of him personally, that aren't dislikable, but if you look at him professionally, who he is tied to, and has been, in terms of think tanks and political powers, he is a pretty solid inner circle member of the NWO, CFR, Chicago Schooler. It's not a big surprise here.

Even closing Gitmo would be a showpiece. The real torture is going on at the secret facilities where no one is allowed in, if they even know where it is that they're not being allowed in. At the same time Obama talked up closing Gitmo, he was expanding the secret prisons and extraordinary rendition (torture) program, and instituting a new assassination program, which included giving himself the right to assassinate US citizens.

I'm sorry, but the rules of the game are ones you set out for yourself. This is just a real bad idea. Not to mention his secret JSOC setup with Hillary.

I've been thinking of making a constitution shredding record for Obama like people did most deservedly with Bush. I kept hearing this campaign plug: He's a Constitutional Scholar! Does that mean he knows how to dismantle one? I'm not sure, it's been pretty blatant.

Next time I have a break I might start a thread on this.

How many ways does that show a bias, stereotypes, and all sorts of illogic?

You're entitled to your opinions, but it would be nice if you'd take off the mask and stop saying you're neither right nor left!

I know of no single person who "worships" Obama. Even the legislature isn't happy with him, as is evidenced constantly Certainly those of us HERE are and have said so frequently!

What "revolution" exactly are you speaking of? The right certainly uses the word CONSTANTLY, but I didn't hear it from the left, at least not much. We hoped he and Congress could help us get out of the hole we were in, but I don't know any who thought we were in a "revolution"!

Dear gawd, WE're ruled by fear??? Look at what the Republicans have accomplished, all through the Bush Administration and right up to today, by stoking fear! Fear of Obama, fear of immigrants, fear of Islam, fear of Muslims, and on and on and on! THEY've been beautifully manipulated by fear; it's liberals I've heard saying "woa, we shouldn't tar everyone by those we fear!" If it was fear, why a court trial instead of a tribunal? Why are we protesting Arizona's law? Why are the Dems trying to push the nuclear-proliferation treaty? Why are we CONSTANTLY saying not to hate and fear all Muslims because of a small minority of terrorists? Boy, you've sure got that one reversed!

Almost everything Bush and the Repubs did was to foster fear, ever since 9/11. That's how they got as much power as they did, how they got away with what they did.
Quote:

stop them from having the abortion that the elected official has no intention of stopping
Are you friggin' KIDDNG me?? A LOT of elected officials would stop abortions if they could; many have made laws that limit it as MUCH as they can, and a goodly number have been elected on the HOPES they can!

The voter has no intention of having? How many millions of "voters" HAVE HAD abortions??

As for
Quote:

GOP resistance to the GOP is a lot stronger, and had been all through the Bush years, with about 1/3 of all republicans reviling the president.
That's an insane statement; if it were so, then SOME members of the Republican party would have at least TRIED to compromise with Dems; instead they've said "Hell NO" to thing they even put forth before a Dem got elected! If 1/3 of all Republicans reviled Bush, how come we didn't hear about it while he was in office?? How come they weren't out there protesting his policies? You talk about US "taking control" of our party; dear gawd, the things Bush did, with the tacit approval of the Republican legislators, should have shook them to their boots and made them stand up and scream!!!

No, it doesn't offend me in the slightest. It just leaves me shaking my head at how you actually BELIEVE those things!

I've got news for you: TODAY's Democrats are just as disgusted with today's democrats as yesterday's were. I know; I'm one of both, and I know others who were there then who are still here now. We call them cunones-less, we decry their willingness to compromise in hopes of Republican votes WE know they'll never get, and they should know too. I would venture to say MOST of us are disgusted with them right now; how else do you think the Republicans won in the midterms?

Unfortunately I think it's stupidity to vote against your own best interests because you're pissed, but many did; and at the time there were only two viable candidates: Obama and Clinton. I don't see Obama as black as the right does--especially the right HERE--but then I don't see as much of a black-and-white a world as they do, either.

That whole post is just amazingly blind. And I think you should stop claiming you're not right or left; that you have NOTHING to say about the right's obstructionism, their fear mongering, their racism and Islamaphobia, yet you can rail like this, is the only argument needed that you're not "objective".

I'm saying act damn it. Stop just whining about what you don't like and trying to blame it on the other guy. It still isn't when people say "Bush did it too."

Not kidding here. I have no love of either. They make me sick. I just posted that if you won an election against a democrat with a *real* progressive candidate, I'd vote for it. If I was a right wing ideology why did I just vote for one right winger and 4 lefties in the last election? I had two senators, a gov, a congressman and a local admin. to vote for, the only right winger I voted for was one of the senators, because he was anti-war.

As far as US politics goes, they all suck. I'm over in Frem-land here. If the govt. collapsed tomorrow, I would rejoice. If someone ran on a platform of banning all political parties, I'd vote for them.

You and Mike both, here's what you're seeing and saying:

"If it's not just like me, democrat or die" then it must be a right win nut job.

Hell, technically, I still work for the democratic party. Still go to meetings too. If I'm your political enemy because I'm too far to the right, your span of political enemies has to be pretty damn big.

Let's recap the positions I continually post:

I'm anti-war
Pro-gay marriage
Pro-immigration
Anti-corporatist
Anti-globalist
Anti-patriot act
Anti-torture
Anti-detainment
pro-balanced budget
anti-gun
So, some things you might disagree with
I'm pro-life, pro-israel and anti-socialist

It seems that if someone isn't a carbon copy, they must be a right wing nut job.

This is about people whining about the Tea Party rather than getting off their asses starting their own damned political resistance. Don't like what's going on? Do something about it.

Quote:

I've got news for you: TODAY's Democrats are just as disgusted with today's democrats as yesterday's were.

Maybe in their heads, but not in their actions. I saw the throngs out there to Jon Stewart's call. Most of them appeared to not get his message, but were saying Hurray for Our Side.

Quote:

how else do you think the Republicans won in the midterms?

Um, they tried?

Quote:

Unfortunately I think it's stupidity to vote against your own best interests because you're pissed, but many did; and at the time there were only two viable candidates: Obama and Clinton. I don't see Obama as black as the right does--especially the right HERE--but then I don't see as much of a black-and-white a world as they do, either.

What is this, tribal voting? I thought Obama was a representative of the Chicago School Keynesian global economics, and a constitutional scholar. I was unaware that he was running on the platform of being a black man. I don't think that's a winning platform. He was running on hope and change, and some jingoistic stuff, but let's face it, most of what he was running on in the Primary was NOT BEING HILLARY CLINTON. That's a pretty good campaign point. In the General election he was running against not being Bush, and to do that he had to paint McCain as Bush. Fortunately for him, one of his opponents was a total moron and the other one was Sarah Palin

Quote:

That whole post is just amazingly blind. And I think you should stop claiming you're not right or left; that you have NOTHING to say about the right's obstructionism,

Nonsense.

First, to the right's obstructionism: Yay them. I with the democrats had done the same to Bush. No one should pass any legislation that is not supported by the majority of the people, that includes the surge in Iraq and the Surge in Afghanistan. It includes the patriot act, extraordinary rendition, bailouts, trade treaties, etc. etc. Virtually nothing congress comes up by the time they're done with it has the support of the American people. Screw it. Veto it all.

There were good "Ideas" that mostly came from the president himself:

The public option
Stem cell research
A national rail system
Environmental Protections
closing secret prisons
Balancing the budget
Ending the wars

That's not the sort of stuff that becomes law. That's 'cause congress, a bunch of corrupt democrats and republicans, doesn't pass laws that have popular support

Gee, really? 'cause I've only mentioned it about 1000 times.

Ahh, here's the one I was looking for. You really don't pay attention much, huh? Just because you spent a decade surrounded by those who'd do anything Cowboy Bushie wanted, and just because you're so in love with Ron Paul (well, and who can blame you; he is rather dreamy in many ways) (and I'll not entirely kidding, he's a decent guy, just not quite the gold-encrusted shininess that you seem to gazing at with your wide, upraised eyes and palms lifted in faithful supplication...)

Just because you live in a worshipful state and deny deny deny the reality of the Tea Party rather than consider that your Idol is nothing but a man with a few good ideas, a few not so good, who's become irrelevant to the thing he created. Just because you worship your leader to the point of blindness, doesn't mean that liberals do the same to their elected leadrs.

Certainly, some liberals go to that place, but they are NOT considered good liberals (not to anyone but you) and there aren't any of that type around here. Go on - find those Obama-worship posts. Can't, can you? So now the lack of evidence will make you change your mind and quit saying such biased, blind nonsense as "Loyal libs worship Obama"?

Or maybe not.

Only in your trove of dreams, my friends, is that true. Real liberals aren't near as stupid as you want us to be. But keep playing. It's fun.

You just told Chris that it would take thousands of tuna to equal the meat on a cow, quite authoritatively. You can continue to insult me. I see Rap has become a new insult. I wonder how he feels about that.

I probably have more in common with you politically than with him, but sorry, it's not fun anymore. I've been kicked around enough.

Thanks for proving my point.

How's that whole rEVOLution thing working out for ya?

Why hasn't Ron Paul fixed everything? Where's the jobs?

Why hasn't he ended the wars?

I will continue to refer to the teabaggers as teabaggers as long as you righties continue to refer to anyone as "worshipping" Obama. That's the point at which I quit reading your drivel, because it's obvious at that point that you've nothing of substance to offer, just rants.

Huh. So it seems Osama was just trying to give a big "Thank You!" to the U.S. on 9/11, eh? If nothing says thanks like big explosions, he definitely thanked the fuck out of us.

Hello,

Ron Paul and the rEVOLution were not embraced by the voters.

Love is hence no longer a big selling point of the platform, and neither is ending the wars.

Could you please quote where I said that?

You've got a well-established pattern going DT. You wildly misrepresent what I say, and when I correct you you ignore it, and when I ask you to show where I said that you disappear. I'm guessing you'll stick with the pattern here... go on. Prove me right.

Or you could kick down with that quote. Oh wait, you can't, can you? Because I never said that.

Quote:

You can continue to insult me.
I do not insult you. I disagree with you. It appears that you cannot separate the two.

You think I've kicked you around? You've never really been kicked, have you? You must really be used to having everyone agree with you. I got news DT - that ain't healthy. You should stick around here. Face the music. It builds character.

There certainly are boards where you can be safe from anyone disagreeing with you or pointing out the huge, gaping holes in your logic. As I said before: I'd prefer you stay and play more. It's fun. And honestly, it looks like you could use this kind of exercise.

Oh - and when you post that quote about the thousands of tuna, go ahead and quote all those Obama worshiping posts from the liberals on these boards. Go on. Prove how your opinions are based on reality.
