Men are dying younger than their female counterparts and of eminently preventable and treatable diseases, according to the Men's Health Forum, an organization in the U.K. that aims to improve mortality rates in men.

Men are more likely than women to die of cancer, stroke, obesity-related diseases and heart disease. Much of this may have to do with lifestyle: as a group, men drink, eat and smoke more than women and get less exercise. Additionally 76% of deaths by suicide are committed by men — not because more are attempted, but because more succeed.

The chief executive of Men's Health Forum believes that making health care more "male friendly" is the key to improving rates of medical testing in men.

Well, nothing there actually suggests they're weaker.

Can't argue with the intelligence angle, though.

Yeah, if it were anything to go on, Wulf's responses to the last few threads I've started would nail the question about brains.

Does he really have nothing to say at all, or is he just drunk, I wonder?

As to men; I saw a study once where it said their worse health is due in part to them not seeking medical help...both because of being too busy and because it's viewed as "weak" to do so. Might have a point there...Jim fits that profile PERFECTLY!!

And exactly HOW do they intend to make medicine more "men friendly"???

I teach children of ages 4-14 and have got to say, girls are so much easier to deal with, especially little girls. They're so sweet and curious and less likely to spontaneously shout or get up and run in opposite directions towards opposing exits (classrooms with small children should not have 4 wide open entryways). They are just, so much more teachable, as a whole, on almost every way.

Sometimes I wonder if we are genetically pre-programed to be stupid as boys. I still have hope for our intelligence as men, but far as children as concerned, in my new and limited experiences, girls are much easier to teach. They seem to have a longer attention span and are less prone to throwing things.

You know, believe it or not, drunk had never even occurred to me. I just figure, given the content and tone of his usual posts - I just think he's really, really on the dim side.

But he could very well be drunk, too.

As a fellow teacher (though my range is more 14-18) I would tend to agree. I have plenty of very intelligent boys in class, but it's much more difficult to get them to stay on-task and engaged. Not that all the girls are model students to be sure, but by and large, they are a bit more easy to manage.

When I was student teaching last year, I remember at faculty meetings (or faculty beatings as we called them) they were really pushing to try and improve minority male math and reading scores on the all mighty standardized tests (minority females were doing just fine). Course, what that meant for us music and art folk was that they were gonna be yanked out of our classes for extra time with math and the like. 'Cause, you know, extra time was the issue, not quality of instruction...

Okay, wait a minute. I have to be fair here (aside from the fact that it was just a tease in the first place). Saying boys are harder to teach isn't an indication of their intelligence, you guys know that. But maybe someone should look into it, that there might be something hormonal or genetic that makes them have the shorter attention spans and have more difficulty learning, or sitting still to learn? Probably a dozen studies, no doubt, but nothing being DONE about it, if I were to take a guess...

I definitely don't see it as a measure of inate intelligence. Given you three are all from the teaching profession, you have my sympathy (that takes GUTS these days, not to mention being willing to live like a pauper and get no respect to boot!). But you ARE viewing it from a teaching standpoint, and I think we all know (well, those of us who aren't just drunk or stupid) that difficulty learning doesn't equate to lower IQ, right?

Oh I agree, and would love to have the time to discover how each student learns best and give them individual attention that best suits their learning styles, but that's just not the reality of our jobs. We have several standards to address (within an 80 min 22 day every other day periods of some of us) and at least 20 students (or maybe even 50 or 60+ in a band or choir).

It's not really fair, but I just have to go with how I can teach best and reach the most kids. I'd love to have leave 'no child left behind' but sometimes that is beyond my control. And of course the parents and kids you need to see more of are the ones you never hear from, while someone else's little miss/mister perfect should shouldn't be getting an B but an A like they do everywhere else and obviously this is my fault.

Also not helping when they are yanked out of my class (when they're already doing poorly here) for more time with the math lessons that still aren't sticking...

EDIT: I noticed that some classrooms have two teachers in them now, which is awesome. One can lead the class as a whole with the other patrolling for stragglers and helping them catch up. I wish I could teach in a two teacher class, but for some reason have 2 band directors to teach 40 or 50 something students makes less sense than having 2 math teachers teach 20 math students...

Oh, Happy, I wasn't dissing teaching in ANY way, I know how overburdened the educational system is these days and that you guys are forced to teach "en masse" as it were. I was just making the point that difficulty in learning doesn't equate to low IQ, that's all.

That two-teacher classroom is FANTASTIC! Must not be in CA, we're lucky to get ONE!

LOL. I spend my time the classroom feeling like an anxious parent (or what I assume a parent feels like, I have no children), but soon as I leave, there's a fair chance one of those topics are on my mind usually food cause I'm not out till 6.

Speakin' of which, it's the weekend! I'm off to see my girl and college friends. If I post anything over the next couple of days might be rife spelling and grammar errors due to typing on an itouch and other extenuating circumstances.

I can say without one ounce of doubt that girls recover far, far better from catastrophic psychological and emotional damage than boys - we're talkin a split on the order of 85/15 there, so it's more than just a statistical anomoly.

I'm not sure about the 76% number, but if I'm remembering right, women attempt suicide more than men, but men really are more successful at killing themselves. It is because of the means each use to attempt suicide: men tend to favor using firearms/hanging and women tend to attempt suicide via overdose/cutting.

Here's a link comparing gender intelligence: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sex_and_intelligence
I was a bit surprised to see that men tended to average a few points higher on IQ tests. They also tend to be overrepresented in the top 2% and in the bottom 2% of intelligence tests. Also, another interesting tidbit in the article was that perhaps the slight edge in IQ between males and females is somehow connected to height.

As far as Niki's post goes, though, I'm sure she was being a bit tongue in cheek. Men as the "weaker" sex might need to be defined a bit. From the article, it was clear that men don't take care of themselves as well as women, and this may partially contribute to their shorter lifespans. I also agree with the poster who said men are slower to seek medical help (though I'm just guessing on that). I'm sure there are other reasons though -- perhaps higher estrogen levels?

On to the word "weaker", though. We haven't defined it, since this isn't a serious discussion, so I won't belabor it. Obviously (I think), men are on average physically stronger than women. I was wondering about pain tolerance, though. I've often joked with my wife that if the human race were dependent on males bearing children, we would quickly go extinct... Frem also has an interesting point -- are females more resilient to trauma than males?

Hello,

This makes sense. As we all know, the heart is the source of creativity and passion. Newly created impulses must travel from the heart to the brain for processing. In tall people, the journey is more arduous, and so only the fittest ideas reach the brain.

There may also be something to do with the humors.

This link from the book of the auspicious title the, "Encyclopedia of Women and Gender"... http://books.google.com/books?id=7SXhBdqejgYC&pg=PA1161&lpg=PA1161&dq=

(wow, that's a long link) states that being a female is a risk factor for going on to developing ptsd if traumatized which is not consistent with your experience but I think there are some quotes from the book that will still resonate with you. That being said, when I looked up differences in gender resilience, some articles had females more resilient when it comes to stressful/difficult upbringings...

Yes, the article was posted as a giggle. And absolutely, "weaker" has many meanings aside from how easy or hard it is for people to learn.

I reject the height thing out of hand. I'm tall for a woman, and plenty bright, thank you.

Hey Niki,
As far as the height thing goes, being taller appeared to be associated with having a high IQ and that when that was taken into account, women and men did not have different IQs. That was just my cursory reading of it, though, so I might have missed something.
