Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

Everyone has 'em, used within a family or a group of friends to express something. I was explaining one I used to Rahl, and came up with a few examples to explain. Had too much fun, so I'm posting it here to start a thread instead, 'cuz I'd like to hear some from others.

Often they're taken from favorite movies, or just picked up along the way...like these:

Semi-quote from "Little Big Man"..."Too late, Na-than, we get drunk, go hunt buffallo". The other is "You go down there!"

Or from "Texas Across the River": "Tubarur...HAR!"

From "Postcards from the Edge": "...and the farmer hauled another load away" and "I do it for the enDOLphins."

Anyone guess what "Reebestraben" (muttered to replicate the unintelligibility of someone giving a speech) comes from?

"I don't think so, Tim"--is EASY.

Picked up from Jim (who was born in Idaho farm country): "And the horse he rode in on" (which I use here a LOT!

And EVERYONE knows "What you mean 'we', kimosabe?"

Another I use often: "You're a (stronger/better/braver) man than I am, Gunga Din".

Stuff like that. Surely you have them, too? I'd love to hear some from others, betcha got some goodies.

Actually the one that draws the most cringes is the simplest one.

"Well... shit."

You really had to be standing there for most of those, since it's usually a total fubar or disaster, cause those words mean I don't have a plan on the shelf to handle it, which is uncommon.

Mostly we make bird calls and hit each other with sticks.

Family reunions are interesting, and require liberal application of mud, branches, and running the hell away.

Aw, c'mon, you all gotta have 'em. Think about it...what do you rattle off to friends or family which they understand immediately and chortle too but would go right over the heads of others?

No takers on "Reebestrauben"?

LONG before IMDB, I had a penchant, a knack for movie and t.v. lines or scenes. Of the most obscure moments referenced by a friend of mine, was really unlike any other. We rarely see eye to eye on much of anything, ( I know, can you imagine? ) S'anyways, during some casual conversation w/ some group or other, he was acknowledging to something said, with an.. ." ahhhh ", to which I immediately added " Bach! ", with the accompanying raised hand, palm open, slightly waving, as a sign of agreement.

The 'source' ? The t.v. show, MASH. The line was a clever little trick Capt. Pierce was bestowing to an anxious Radar O'Reilly, who was trying to impress a lady friend, who happened to be an aficionado of classical music.

Out of all the episodes of MASH, and all the t.v. which either of us watched over the span of DECADES, for some reason, that one line sticks out. Further, why I chose that moment to follow up and finish the line, not having ANY clue if he or anyone would know what I meant, remains a mystery. But as soon as I had said it, he immediately 'got' it.

( It may be safe to say that the consumption of alcohol may have been involved here )

And strangely enough, no one else picked up on the line or got the reference. But when ever we're around each other, and there's something said or around us that we generally have no clue of , and want to give the impression we really know what's going on, and are in full agreement...

"Ahhh,... Bach! "

Actually, that's from "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon", the second of John Ford's 'Cavalry Trilogy".

The exact lines are:

Quote:

Pony That Walks: Nathan! Nathan! I am a Christian. Hallelujah. Old friend me. Long time. Long time.

Nathan Brittles: I come in peace, Pony That Walks.

Pony That Walks: Take salt, Nathan. Take salt. Smoke pipe. Good, good.

Nathan Brittles: Pony That Walks, my heart is sad at what I see. Your young men painted for war. Their scalp knives red. The medicine drums talking. It is a bad thing.

Pony That Walks: A bad thing, Nathan. Many will die. My young men. Your young men. No good. No good.

Nathan Brittles: We must stop this war.

Pony That Walks: Too late, Nathan. Young men do not listen to me. They listen to big medicine. Yellow hair. Custer dead. Buffalo come back, great sign. Too late, Nathan. You will come with me. Hunt buffalo together. Smoke many pipes. We are too old for war.

Nathan Brittles: Yes, we are too old for war... but old men must stop wars.

Pony That Walks: Too late, too late. Many squaws will sing the death songs. Many lodges will be empty. You come with me. We hunt buffalo, get drunk together. Hallelujah, hallelujah!

Nathan Brittles: No, old friend, I must go. I go far away.

Pony That Walks: Then, Nathan, my brother... go in peace.

John Wayne is Capt. Brittles, and Chief John Big Tree is Pony That Walks.

You don't misquote my Cavalry Trilogy.
