Magons, what about this?

Australia Prime Minister Julia Gillard said Tuesday she believes Australia should become a republic after Queen Elizabeth II dies.

Gillard said the country has a "deep affection" for Queen Elizabeth, but that she favors moving Australia toward a republic.

"What I would like to see as prime minister is that we work our way through to an agreement on a model for the republic, but I think that the appropriate time for this nation to move to being a republic is when we see the monarch change," Gillard said at a news conference.

"Obviously I'm hoping for Queen Elizabeth that she lives a long and happy life, and having watched her mother I think there's every chance that she will live a long and happy life, but I think that's probably the appropriate point for a transition to a republic."

Australia is currently a constitutional monarchy with the British monarch as its head of state.

Gillard made the comments on the campaign trail ahead of Saturday's general election, in which she faces a challenge from opposition leader Tony Abbott.

Abbott said Tuesday he believes the current system of government is a good one.

"This republican cause has been with us for a long time, but the Australian people have demonstrated themselves to be remarkably attached to institutions that work," he said Tuesday.

"I think that our existing constitutional arrangements have worked well in the past. I see no reason whatsoever why they can't continue to work well in the future. So while there may very well be further episodes of republicanism in this country, I am far from certain that, at least in our lifetimes, there is likely to be any significant change."

I've never been clear about this: Is Australia a wholly independent country like America, or somehow tied to England? And what about Canada? I've never put much effort into understanding either, but always had the impression that there are governmental ties there.

Hi Niki, Australia is a completely independent country and has it's own government and autonomy. The nation is a traditional member of the Commonwealth as it used to be an overseas territory of the British Empire. The Queen is only a ceremonial Head of State. Ausralia, as a Commonwealth member, must swear allegiance to the Queen, and are obligated to defend her and other commonwealth nations.Hence, ANZACS fought for the British during the war.The same goes for Canada and New Zealand. Each Commonwealth nation has a Governor in place, who is the Queen's representative in the nation. The Governor only has cereonial powers, but is obliged to be informed of all political decisions which Her Majesty may deem important for the safety and defense of the Commonwealth.
The Commonealth, nowadays, is basically a union of allied nations sharing common intersts, such as democracy, world peace and the such like. If Australia became a republic, it would have no real effect on the nation, other than breaking all historical ties with the British Crown and not being able to compete in the Commonwealth games. Australia voted not so long ago overwhelmingly to retain those ties, but it is meaningless politically.
Ausralia has prospered pretty well on its own since it was a British Penal Colony.
If you go to Wikipedia and enter "Commonwealth of Nations", it gives a fairly good account, to be fair.

Thanx PK! I really appreciate that...I understand much better now.

I knew about Australia's beginning, but I know little more of her history or politics. I've learned something new!

The Governnor General respresents the Queen, and Julia is right - we need to be a republic, but it seems kind of rude to do it to ol' Queen Bess in her declining years. If she's anything like her mother, it will be another 20 years wait.

Hi Magons. As a True Blue Brit, I would be sad to see Australia drop out of The Commonwealth, but it is admittedly outdated and times move on.I think it is inevitable that it will happen. But do you think the vote will go the other way this time? Plus, I would be intersted to know how Canadians feel about it.
