Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

I found this and was going to post it in the thread about the mosque ta Ground Zero. But I discovered there IS no such thread currently...the debate has been taken up in various other threads, it doesn't have one of its own. Just shows how much this is an issue, that's all, I just found that surprising.

Nonetheless, here is what I found, and it explains the issue to me and turns out to be just what I believed. Also, a caveat: I posted earlier that there is already a mosque two blocks further on, but apparently they lost their lease, even more reason for them to search for another location.
Quote:

“We are not involved with that {any} other group,” said Imam Mustafa Elazabawy, raising his voice just loud enough to be heard above the din of an air conditioner unit, but not to disturb the Arabic recitations. “We have been here for 30 years, in this neighborhood. Many Muslims also died over there, on 9/11.”

Ever since Masjid Manhattan lost its lease on nearby Warren Street in 2008, members have struggled to find a more suitable space for daily prayers.

Cordoba House is neither a mosque nor really at Ground Zero. Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, chairman of the Cordoba Initiative, insists the facility will serve as a YMCA-type community center for interfaith bridge-building. The $100 million complex, replacing an abandoned Burlington Coat Factory warehouse, would have a prayer room, but also a swimming pool, basketball court, childcare services, art exhibitions and a food court serving halal dishes from around the world.

Ergo, even calling it a "mosque" is a misnomer; the plan is to include a "prayer room", and the focus of the building is on many other things.

It's a shame this has been so blown up and now is having such an effect. If we want to see enemies, we can find them anywhere; if we want to see positive signs of change, we can find them as well. To ascribe subversive motives comes out of fear and intolerance; America stands for the strength, tolerance and inclusion; how I wish we embodied that instead.

Bump because all the furor pro and con regarding the proposed community center neglects to notice the facts presented here, which I think are important to the issue.

The more I read about this the more I feel it was the media trying to create a story where there is none.

People tend to forget that we are not fighting Muslims. We are fighting a terrorist group that attacked us on 9/11 and has killed and continues to kill Muslims because they don't follow their radical beliefs. Since the Afganistan Army is most likely pure Muslim, then we are fighting alongside Muslims to free their nation from these terroists. So any Muslim structure built near the terrorist attack has no significance except for people who can't separate these terrorists from mainstream Muslims who have been living in this nation for years.

They keep saying they want to build bridges over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over.

Do they see how they're really upseting ALOT of people are who don't want them to build this thing in lower Manhatten's buiness district, who's going to go to this thing. Traffic is a nightmare during the week, and it's a goast town on weekends.

There are over 100 Mosques in NYC, why are they hell bent on building it there? And why do they have to call it the "Cordoba" house?

It is not upsetting me. I see no reason why it should upset anybody. The Muslim faith is one the largest religions on this planet and I suspect it is growing. So it only makes sense that more facilities are going to be built. Since New York is the main entrence to our nation, on the east coast, it does not surpise me that this facility is being built there. It is where most imigrants have settled for decades. So it only makes sense that the Muslim nation is growing there.

Sounds like they're trying to buy them off by offering them a better location. I'm sure they'll be buying the Park 51 location at a hefty profit for the Muslims, too. And they're looking at "state property" for the new location? And you're excited about that, WHY?

So you don't want mosques, but you're okay with giving this group some government land to build a mosque. Strange. That part of it would actually upset me, since I'm not a big fan of government sponsoring ANY churches, anywhere.

Your post roused me from my slumber. I have been summoned by Shaitan to defame innocent doe-eyed muslims. You are clever and decent, yet I cruelly dispute you.

We are not at war with Islam, true; we are at war with terrorists who find inspiration for terrorism in popular Islamic theology, and whose interpretation of Islamic theology is due more deference than idealistic notions about the basic decency of Muslims. Al-Qaeda may be closer to the pulse of the Islamic street than us well-meaning librul types.

I don't give a damn if a Mosque is built near Ground Zero, even if Muslims at large take it as the obvious calculated Pwnage that it is. I do, however, give a damn about ascribing our world views to those who don't share them.

I haven't heard the news yet, are they trying to get them to move the location? In a way, that's good, but a shame. I have worried that, with all the furor created, the mosque and anyone there might be in danger, but I'm sad that the American people can be so manipulated as to force them to move.

As to who would go if it were in the original location, that's a silly question. If Muslims have ALREADY been going to the little crowded mosque where they lost their lease on their lunch hours to pray, of course they'd go to the new one. And people here in SF use community centers in the middle of town...you'd have to ask the same question of ANY business in that area.

What really gets me the most is that it IS a community center, with facilities many other than Muslims would use, and only has a single "prayer ROOM" in it...it's a far cry from any kind of "mosque", and it's only the ugliness of those who made it an issue that it even IS an issue.

No, by the way, MSNBC is COVERING the issue, as are all the MSM, unfortunately. Last night they detailed exactly how it came about...the same things I posted yesterday, ironically. That you can't see it for what it is; a tempest in a teapot created by people who want to use it for their own agenda and to inflame hatred, is truly sad. It means you're as easy to manipulate as all the others who are against it, and are unable to grasp the reality of the situation. That makes you a pawn, which is wrong and sad.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised; the feelings are still there for many people and will be easy to propagandize for a long time to come. But it IS a shame America can't behave based on the principles we stand for, and to find out how easily the American people can be moved to give in to their basest emotions over something that wasn't an issue all the way back to last December, until one fringer created a furor and politicians and FauxNews jumped on it for their own purposes.

I guess we will always be vulnerable to propaganda and visceral appeals to our most negative emotions; I wish it weren't so.

Yeah, simple stuff like maps and.... basic math tell us it 2 blocks away, you moron. There were pits of the planes and other debris scattered up to 2 /12 miles from ground zero.

Far be it from me to expect you to understand such complicated concepts. Go have another bagel, you're better off with your doughy intellectual peers.
