Ouch! What an incredible experience that must have been.

One passenger was killed when an airplane crashed in bad weather and broke apart while attempting to land early Monday on the island of San Andres, Colombia, officials said.

There was conflicting information about what caused the crash. The report from the national police said a downdraft may have shaken the airplane just as it prepared to land. But Pedro Gallardo, the governor of San Andres y Providencia state, told CNN en Español that lightning hit the plane. The pilot also reported a lightning strike, El Tiempo newspaper said.

CNN World Weather confirmed the presence of multiple lightning strikes around the San Andres airport at the time of the crash. Analysis of data from the World Wide Lightning Location Network indicates there were 11 strikes within 6 miles (10 kilometers) of the runway in a five-minute span around the time of the accident.

The weather event occurred as the plane was about 260 feet (80 meters) before the start of the runway, said Col. Hector Carrascal, director of navigation services at the Colombian Civil Aviation Authority. Wreckage was spread about another 328 feet (100 meters) on the runway, officials said.

Photographs of the airplane on the runway show it broke apart, with the nose and first eight rows of seat pointing in one direction and the rest of the aircraft almost pointing in the opposite direction. A release by the national police said the plane split into three parts.

I'm sorry for the victims and their families...I can't imagine that many tons of airplane splitting in three like that!

I saw that, and was rather gratified that in all that mess there was only ONE fatality, as far as I've heard - say anything else you like about Boeing, the 737 series airframe is a freakin tank, and probably the safest commercial aircraft there ever was.

Although the article said the woman was "killed" she actually suffered an apparent heart attack, no physical trauma from crash impact.

Still, would that make the airline responsible?

I know the old hypothetical about someone jumping off a building and someone shooting them as they fall past their window, and that person being guilty of murder... This seems somewhat similar.

She did not die as a direct result of injuries sustained in the crash, but she died as a result of the crash nonetheless, if it caused her heart attack.

It was apparantly an ACCIDENT, and the pilots did everything they could to help people survive...

How typical that a staunch liberal would be looking to blame someone and get money out of it.

Not really, Wulf.

(A) I'm not "looking to blame someone", just noting the legal ramifications and possibilities. Sorry you don't get that. I'm sure you'll blame the hippies or the feminists for the crash. Or blacks.

(B) I'm not actually expecting to get any money out of this. Not sure why you think I'd be looking to get money from this, but you're batshit crazy and dumb as rocks, as ever.

I had thought the point was the safety features of the aircraft and it's design. Sorry, just an aircraft mechanic's viewpoint.
Once the lawyers get involved to decide if the airline is responsible for Lightning, it's anybody's guess. It's not the airline's money, it the insurance company's money.
But for the Baby Boeing giving every passenger and crew a chance at continuing life, impressive.

You caught me, Pizmo. I look for stuff to put up here that might be of interest or provoke a discussion, or both. It's been slow lately except for a few things which have already been talked to death here...

I fully agree that if they discover, as many are assuming, that it was a lightning strike which caused the accident, nobody should be held to blame and no lawyer should get away with making someone to blame.

I also think the point about the aircraft being well built is valid; it's quite possible a lesser plane might have burst into flames or something, killing all aboard.

Thanx for telling me the one fatality was a heart attack, and yes, I think it's wonderful there were no other fatalities. I don't see how you can hold the airline responsible for the one fatality, given something else would have caused her heart attack if not this.

Coming from a Californian and having worked for attorneyss, I have strong feelings that we are entirely too litigious a society.

My point in bringing it up is that, from a strictly legal sense, you don't just get to say, "Meh, if it wasn't this that killed her, it would've been something else."

If someone does a home-invasion on your house, and you fall over dead of a heart attack because you were terrified and agitated by them smashing into your house and putting a gun in your face, THEY ARE STILL GOING TO BE CHARGED WITH YOUR MURDER.

Show me one prosecutor in this country that would stand up in court and say, "Ehhh, if they didn't give her a heart attack, something else would have..."

Just because...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_737

Seriously, it's one awesome goddamn aircraft, takes a lickin, keeps on tickin, and even if it augers in, STILL provides a decent survival rate!

How can you not love the old girl ?

Here's one for ya, 737, tried to land at Midland (short runway) in horrible weather, overshot, ripped OFF the starboard landing gear, I mean, clean off the freakin plan, CRUNCH...

Manages the touch-n-go, gets BACK IN THE AIR, humps it 40 miles to Birmingham with the gear down, and then with only the nose and portside landing gear, brings her down slow and easy with no fire and minimal damage even dragging the starboard engine as a flippin friction brake.

Zero Fatalaties.

Again, HOW can you not love this aircraft ?
