Some good quotes from the blog:

A group of influential conservative members of the behemoth social media site Digg.com have just been caught red-handed in a widespread campaign of censorship, having multiple accounts, upvote padding, and deliberately trying to ban progressives. An undercover investigation has exposed this effort, which has been in action for more than one year.

“The more liberal stories that were buried the better chance conservative stories have to get to the front page. I’ll continue to bury their submissions until they change their ways and become conservatives.”
-phoenixtx (aka vrayz)

Digg.com is the powerhouse of social media websites. It is ranked 50th among US websites by Alexa (117th in the world), by far the most influential social media site. It reached one million users in 2007 and likely has more than tripled that by this point. Digg generates around 25 million page views per month, over one third of the page views of the NY Times. Front page stories regularly overwhelm and temporarily shut down websites in a process called the “Digg Effect.”

The concept behind the site is simple. Submitted webpages (news, videos, or images) can be voted up (digging) or down (burying) by each user, sort of a democracy in the internet model. If an article gets enough diggs, it leaves the upcoming section and reaches the front page where most users spend their time, and can generate thousands of page views.

This model also made it very susceptible to external gaming whereby users from certain groups attempt to push their viewpoint or articles to the front page to give them traction. This was evident with the daily spamming of the upcoming Political section with white supremacist material from the British National Party (articles which rarely reached the front page). The inverse of this effect is more devastating however. Bury brigades could effectively remove stories from the upcoming sections by collectively burying them.

One bury brigade in particular is a conservative group that has become so organized and influential that they are able to bury over 90% of the articles by certain users and websites submitted within 1-3 hours, regardless of subject material. Literally thousands of stories have already been artificially removed from Digg due to this group. When a story is buried, it is removed from the upcoming section (where it is usually at for ~24 hours) and cannot reach the front page, so by doing this, this one group is removing the ability of the community as a whole to judge the merits or interest of these stories on their own (in essence: censoring content). This group is known as the Digg “Patriots”.

[List of "Digg Patriot" usernames/sockpuppets given here]

The ring leader of the group is Bettverboten, who issues multiple digg and bury orders everyday. She is a Digg power user who has dugg 70,000 articles and has 1500 submits of her own (18% have gone popular) in one short year on the site. She was previously known as Lizbett before her lifetime ban for offensive and inappropriate comments, and has two sleeper accounts waiting if she gets banned again at loquaciouslola and MsBoop.

[List of sockpuppets continues]

The list above is truncated from the larger membership, some of which are inactive. Not every member listed has admitted to violating the Digg Terms of Service in public either, although most are guilty of some abuse or another. This group is the heart of a complicated web on various networks, including Twitter, Propeller, StumbleUpon, YouTube, and Facebook, [And possibly Fireflyfans?] all dedicated to ramming an extreme right wing viewpoint down the throats of those communities and censoring opposing viewpoints. This includes such means as cyber stalking, bullying, and terror, as exposed on YouTube yesterday (something not one of the DP group condemned). Not surprisingly, there is also a heavy contingent active on the ultraconservative FreeRepublic.

There are a few differences of opinion within DP, although for the most part, they are extremely similar in perspective. They hate Obama. They hate progressives. They hate the UN, diplomacy, and peace/disarmament efforts. They hate reforms of health care, Wall St., and immigration. They hate science, in fact many are creationists, and some even blog about it. They hate the secular nature of our nation. They hate environmental protection, requiring polluters to be responsible for their own cleanup, and especially hate climate efforts. They hate unions and any attempt to level the playing field to give all Americans economic opportunities. They hate the government, except the military-industrial complex. They hate abortion rights. They hate public schools and really hate higher education. They hate anyone in the media except far right personalities like Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, and Michelle Malkin. They hate anyone who doesn’t think Obama is a secret islamist and/or marxist who was born in Kenya. They just love to hate.

Although this is a fringe group of Teabagging wingnuts, many well established figures in the Digg community are also present, such as BalancingAct, EMFK, Janinco, mikeinto, and spindig. 10 members have been part of Digg since 2005-2006, with 43 having their current account there for over 2 years. 19 are in the top 500 all time users as ranked by Social Blade, including 3 in the top 100. They have submitted over 30,000 articles, and dugg over 1,000,000 submits collectively. They regularly front page material, yet have some paranoid delusion that the Digg admins are part of some conspiracy to censor them, not once recognizing the blatant hypocrisy of their organized censorship doing that very thing.

So how about that - a whole group with their many sockpuppets and their pathetic attempts to be powerful on the internet got outed. The hypocrisy of these people is unbelievable. They're blatant in their manipulative censorship of the site, but scream longest and loudest if they even suspect that anyone's trying to do the same to them.

Anyway, it seems that the tactics used by some folks on this site are common for the right wing hate-mongers. Interesting, huh?

Man, you think that's bad ?

There's been prettymuch an outright war going on at Wikipedia for a couple years now between these types and just about everyone else, which would not have been so bad had not some of the original founders been more than a bit complicit with it.

Just about anywhere you find information, you'll always find some pack of brownshirt jackboots wanting to distort or suppress it, and strangely enough, they ALL seem to come from ONE end of the political spectrum, what a fascinating coinkydink, isn't it ?

Nor is this a new problem, we had these guys back in the days of ANSI-Text BBS's too, but these days technology can level the playing field in much the same way as one can turn a surveillence society against the very jackboots who installed it.

Information is POWER, and by their very nature, their refusal to accept or even use information that does not confirm or agree with their own puny little viewpoints, they set themselves up for failure, since by limiting their own accepted information, they are weak, goldfish in a shark tank, just cause there's a lot of em doesn't make em any smarter, you know.

One of the greatest values of the internet is how participatory it is, and exposing folk like this is prelude to the death of a thousand cuts, as every rational person looks at them with irritation, and even if only one in a hundred chooses to act on it, that's still more hassle than they could ever handle, especially with a frustration tolerance as low as most wingnuts have.

Lemme ask you this, which is more fearful;
Facing down a single great white ?
Or facing down a thousand pirahna ?

Yeah. I know there's a battle at wikipedia. But I feel like at least the battle is known there, and there's an active effort to catch people abusing the system. I just hadn't ever heard of such organized efforts happening at other sites. I also enjoyed the paragraph about all the hates these people have. Yep, we've got them here too. Hate hate hate. They do love their hate.

It really all ties together, these threads we've had going lately. These people can't allow themselves just one vote (or one online personality). They have to cheat because otherwise they might not win. But, without seeing the dissonance, they'll go on and on about how their side is the one "everyone" supports. Never mind that a majority of Americans disagree, like the majority who voted for Obama.

Oh - but Americans who disagree with these Tea Party extremists aren't real Americans. That makes it all make sense, right?

It's lovely circular logic.

Indeed. I don't want to scare the River-sock crowd any more than she's already scared, but you never know where the next super secret undercover investigation might happen...

I think you're right. It's stunning that the wingnut solution to appearing stupid is to try harder to be stupid. This approach may appeal to those already in the crowd, but they don't realize how badly they are marginalizing themselves. And they don't realize that, once the sockpuppets are taken away, they're really not a large crowd. Not large enough to be alienating folks the way they do.

Oh, they're everywhere. And always the same.

Saul Alinsky. Wrote a book ("Rules for Radicals") that the right likes to accuse Obama of playing by. Oddly, though, if you flip through it, you'll see that EVERYTHING the tea parties do is straight out of that book. They really don't enjoy it when you point out that they're radicals, too. Hell, according to that one guy at the town hall, he's a "proud right-wing terrorist", to which his Republican congressman said, "God bless you, sir". You can't make stuff like this up.

Here's some snippets from Alinsky. See if they sound familiar to you, from what you've seen and heard from the tea parties:

Quote:

"The Revolutionary force today has two targets, moral as well as material. Its young protagonists are one moment reminiscent of the idealistic early Christians, yet they also urge violence and cry, 'Burn the system down!' They have no illusions about the system, but plenty of illusions about the way to change our world. It is to this point that I have written this book."
In this book we are concerned with how to create mass organizations to seize power and give it to the people; to realize the democratic dream of equality, justice, peace.... "Better to die on your feet than to live on your knees.' This means revolution." p.3
"Radicals must be resilient, adaptable to shifting political circumstances, and sensitive enough to the process of action and reaction to avoid being trapped by their own tactics and forced to travel a road not of their choosing." p.6
"An organizer working in and for an open society is in an ideological dilemma to begin with, he does not have a fixed truth -- truth to him is relative and changing; everything to him is relative and changing.... To the extent that he is free from the shackles of dogma, he can respond to the realities of the widely different situations...." pp.10-11
"The end is what you want, the means is how you get it. Whenever we think about social change, the question of means and ends arises. The man of action views the issue of means and ends in pragmatic and strategic terms. He has no other problem; he thinks only of his actual resources and the possibilities of various choices of action. He asks of ends only whether they are achievable and worth the cost; of means, only whether they will work. ... The real arena is corrupt and bloody." p.24
"The third rule of ethics of means and ends is that in war the end justifies almost any means...." p.29

"The seventh rule... is that generally success or failure is a mighty determinant of ethics...." p.34

"The tenth rule... is you do what you can with what you have and clothe it with moral garments.... It involves sifting the multiple factors which combine in creating the circumstances at any given time... Who, and how many will support the action?... If weapons are needed, then are appropriate weapons available? Availability of means determines whether you will be underground or above ground; whether you will move quickly or slowly..." p.36

The irony that gets me: the folks who are most gung ho about killing anyone and everyone in Afghanistan because dammit they asked for it when them guys took over those airplanes, these vengeance hungry Americans would be the first to hijack a plane and fly it into someone else's high rise if any country did to us what we've done to the Middle East.

If someone came here and set up road blocks and security checks on our roads, these Tea Party yokels would be strapping on the explosive vests, and damned proud of it. And yet, they'll still stand here and yap about how we got come down on those people harder because they're EVIL for trying to fight back.

Anyway...

I don't know about Alinsky. I can see that some applies, the morality parts. But I don't think the radical Tea Party types think about things this much. I don't think they're aware of ends vs means. They just blindly do whatever makes them feel good.

And they most certainly are NOT free of the shackles of dogma.

The blog contains many many directly quoted emails between people in the group. Now, you could believe them fake, but that could be checked, right? I don't hang out at digg, so I haven't seen the followup, but I'm sure it's going on.

Some select emails between Digg Patriots:

Whether I agree with Bjornski, Anamaly100, PhilPerspective, Novenator, JanineWallace, UncaJoe, & a couple others I can’t think of right now, I bury `em anyway. *ACTUALLY* each of them has been “dead-on, balls-accurate” (an industry term) at least once in the past week or so, and it sort-of pains me to be dishonest by burying them anyway, but then I remember . . . I’m not up for re-election!
-BentheDog

What appears to be a daily email listing articles to be buried:

If any of the usual suspects subbed a story claiming “sky blue/water wet,” I’d BURY IT without question. I’ve been on digg for almost 4 years…
-JeremiahLaments (account says Joined Digg on 21Aug2009)

I personally vote for a complete blackout on lib subs: Bury every comment (including the conservatives “helping” to pop the story). No up-votes (no matter how much you agree).
-asami21

The following a transcript of a DP conversation:
Bettverboten (Lizbett): Check back here you late nighters to see when and who subs this [article just published on targeted website]. I am sure it is coming our way.
Phoenixtx: Good recon Liz! Thanks! Let’s keep our eyes open.
LibertyAlways: It’s up—bury! [link]
JeremiahLaments: Think we can bury it in record time? I think we CAN!
[10 minutes later] We did it! Buried it with only 5 diggs–might be a record!

[use the] search site feature, I bury all the subs less than 2 days [old] in matter of seconds. I think we’d be even more effective if we all did this to some degree with consistency or at least with certain sources/sites. From there it’s like shooting ducks…
-allisonrose870

(Quoting blog:)
Further, this is not merely a case of not knowing they are breaking the rules, this is deliberate.
I am concerned that if Skype is directly connected to digg like twitter is …than bury rules probably apply like they do with twitter. If there are monitors in the chat rooms and someone reports we are linking buries and asking for buries on digg with links, it may be reported to digg.
-bettverboten

And then there's a whole section of the blog on how to get new accounts after you've been banned for life. The DP's kept a collection of IDs around to hand out when any of them got caught and banned.

The last part really reminded me of our little River. Not that she gets banned here, but she definitely loses the joy in her IDs when they're outed.

BTW, anyone else notice the new IDs who are showing up since she got ragged on last week? Hmmmm.

The chattering hordes of the tea parties AREN'T aware of Alinsky or his doctrines; neither are the vast majority of progressives or liberals.

But that doesn't imply that the party higher-ups aren't consciously using those doctrines in their decision-making.

Given WHERE the vast majority of the tea parties' support, both financial and moral, seems to be coming from (the neo-con right, from Dick Armey right down through Newt Gingrich and former part-time half-term governor Ms. Palin), it only makes sense that they'd be following "Alinsky's Rules" - especially since they give those same rules 100% of the credit for getting Obama elected.

I did see a copy of an Al Qaeda Manual for Dummies on the web once - all kidding aside it was genuine - not too different from Alinsky's Rules. People are people.

And Pizmo thinks he's CIA (ChrisIsAll, which is really just a clever expansion of CIA - oooh, look! I'm channeling PN!)

I kinda figured he was Mincing.

Still, he is kinda funny. Wonder if he'll disappear when his namesake finally croaks it.

Thanks, Piz - that's kinda where I was going with that Alinsky reference. You can take just about ANYTHING - Rules of Order, for instance - and find some Alinsky doctrine within it if you're really looking to try to smear someone with it.

It's so easy, too - I just used a few quick references, and pegged the Tea Parties to a... well, I guess you'd say, to a TEA - with Alinsky's Rules for Radicals. Fact is, pretty much any movement is going to follow at least some of them, including the GOP.

Or, they're not bumping this thread in the hopes that it'll get buried.

It's likely happening, but in smaller ways. I may be naive, but I've yet to see large groups of liberals who can be so easily hypocritical. As far as my definition goes, part of being liberal is allowing for people to different, and supporting the free flow of information. That includes allowing articles that I disagree with be posted and read by all. The merits of the article will play out on it's own, without my control.

The new conservative movement seems avidly against both of these principles: people must NOT be different, and information should be suppressed.

Well, but plugging sci-fi shows is different. Everyone knows those Firefly/Xena battles were not fought by a lot of people. Just a few people with multiple multiple hits. (I surely took part! )

The conservative sockpuppets must all be scared of this thread, since there's such a clear concerted effort of a few to move it down the page.

Well then I better bump it.

It's too bad they don't have a *bury* button to make use of.

Yeah, and this thread will never actually disappear from the site because Our Mods are Different. The thing that keeps some of these people from being banned or deleted is the very thing that can out them; a lack of bias.

Well, they don't really get to "bury" the posts here, but they can bring up lots of crap and post useless stuff in an effort to try to drive posts they don't like off the "active" page and into the archives...
