When I WAS A KID...

We had REAL diversity on TV like Northern Exposure, Incredible Hulk and St. Elsewhere.
NOW: Focus groups mandate angsty teen s**t & Murder CSI shows, with the exception of cheep-to-produce "reality" crap.

We could play on monkey bars & kid-powered merry-go-rounds.
NOW: Safe structured play equipment.

We could break bones & have it seen as a normal part of growing up.
NOW: It's a thing of horror.

We could hit a bully back for attacking us.
NOW: A lawsuit can ensue.

We could call in sick to work, and be excused.
NOW: You must have a doctor's note, or face possible termination.

Talk about switching gears. Amp up the bulls**t?
IMO 9-11 accelerated this fu**ing nonsense to the Nth degree.

It was always getting worse, but that attack made us douchebags beyond belief. Suddenly, torture was okay, if it was torturing the *RIGHT* peeps. You'd better be in the ICU if you can't go to work. You NEED to see "The Batchlorette" if you want to discuss cool TV at work.

We are dwindling as a Nation, and peeps here still want to feel *superiour* to others. As long as that's the case, we will continue to lose.

Hospitals cut back on diagnostic/prevention sciences staff because patients can't foot the co-pay bill?

My friends, we are entering an age of feudalism once more. A *comfortable* feudalism where we can afford a 50" plasma screen, but ultimately not the rent.

We have been steered to this course from Kennedy on down. Extreme short-sightedness will be our downfall, if it continues in this manner. The rich will be in place (buying shoes, playing golf), whilst the peons suffer.

Using our resources to help peeps would have been a better investment than using them to control peeps IMO.

Some it is a global thing, chris and not just the US. I was just talking about the mollycoddling (if you know that expression) of kids these days, where their parents hover over them endlessly. They are also increasingly rights focused (their own not others).

I've had some interesting experiences with other peoples tiny children recently. I had a tot at the park berate me for bringing my dog, as he was scared of all doggies. I smiled and resisted the urge to cuff him around his elfin like ears, and did not bother to point out that it was a leads off park for dogs, and if he didn't like the experience of a peaceful coexistence with some canine playmates, he should ask him mummy to take him elsewhere. All i said was 'he (my dog) won't hurt you, he's only interested in his ball.'

As for TV, actually for me it has gotten better. As usual, I ignore most of the American pap on commercial stations, and download or borrow good American stuff when I can - Firefly, Battleship Gallactica, Deadwood etc. I can also access a hell of a lot more channels than I could when I was young, including a lot more foreign (not US) stuff, plus on the government channel I can watch anything within 14 days of broadcast.

So actually, I think that stuff is better.

Beware of getting older and looking at the past with nostalgia coloured glasses. Somethings have gone to shit, some things are better, some things are still pretty ordinary. That's here of course, the US may be on the precipice of disaster.

Thanks for the reality-check, MD. Yes, it's all in flux. The future is always... fluid.

"We could call in sick to work, and be excused.

Hello,

For me, it's been the opposite. My first job required doctor's notes, but my past couple of jobs do not. I think there must be some kind of law prohibiting them from asking for a Doctor's note around here. The first time I tried to get a doctor's note in Arizona, people looked at me like I was retarded.

Good list, but the I'd disagree on this one. There's always been crap aimed at teens, and overall, I'd call the last decade and change a damned fine run for dramatic TV.

But otherwise...
Yeah, pretty much.

Bah, these things cycle back and forth, for every Martin Luther King there's a McCarthy, and it's a good statement about humanity that we eventually wise up, cast em down, and a period of enlightened decency follows...

Only problem is we keep forgiving and forgetting, yanno, cause the enlightened ones are nice, but that keeps letting the slime creep back in, and we gotta learn NOT to do that, cause we never do seem to get back all the ground we lost, and like a decaying orbit, eventually.. blam.

So here's for finishing off the bastards when they're down, neh ?

As far as childhood goes, I dunno man - I see some of the toys and stuff kids got today and I am like DAMN, where was THAT when I was a kid, cause some of that stuff is damn awesome, innit ?

Anyhows, if it was really that bad as your imagination is messin with you about, we'd be scared of Palin instead of laughin at her, cause she'd be one step away from the oval office.

Things from my childhood that I miss...lawn sprinklers, and that slidey game you used to play with them.

Its true that the world is going to hell; it was true in my father's day, too. Every generation, after sufficient time for reflection, decides that the world is going to hell and things were better before. Even Adam himself probably thought "Things were better before...when I didn't exist."

Still, I read your list, and find myself nodding with approval. This is how I know I'm getting old.

I always wondered who the hell thought up Lawn Darts, and how they ever got approved for production. I can just hear the sales pitch... "Okay, so you have this gian DART, right? And the idea is to throw it up in the air, high as you can, and then crane your head back so you can watch it come down, get it? Oh, and it weighs about a pound, and has a big pointed sharp metal tip, so if it hits you in the head, it's almost GUARANTEED to pierce your skull! Sounds fun, eh?"

I mean, as toys go, this ranks right up there with Project Pluto... :) It wasn't so much a plaything, as a method of thinning the herd.

You've probably seen this before. Hideously smug, but I can relate to some the lost art of childhood.

To All The Kids Who Survived The 1930's, 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's, and Early-ish 80's!!

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they carried us.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, our baby cribs were covered with bright colored lead-based paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking.

As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.

Riding in the back of a ute on a warm day was always a special treat.

We drank water from the hose and NOT from a bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank soft drink with sugar in it, but we weren't overweight because... WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 9999 channels on cable, no video tape movies, no surround sound, no cell phones, no personal computers, no Internet or Internet chat rooms… WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents.

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.

We were given cowboy guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls and although we were told it would happen, we did not poke out very many eyes.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them!

The town football club had tryout for the junior team and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!

This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever!

The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned

HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL!

One show, HK, ONE show- CHUCK! I watch NO OTHER TV PERIOD!!!! Almost everything else I've sampled is either crap, or just not good enough to warrant sitting thru commercials.

And I used to watch a LOT of TV even two decades ago.

(Okay, I WILL watch Nikita on WB when it starts- so, TWO)

Okay... Buffy, Angel, Firefly, LOST, BSG, Breaking Bad, Mad Men, The Shield, The Sopranos, Deadwood, Rome, Alias, Fringe, Doctor Who, The Wire, Veronica Mars, Weeds, and others, but that's just the top of my head. And that's not accounting for other genres, there have been solid comedies, and in particular a ton of great animation in the last decade.

I'm pretty sure when I walked into a convenience store the other day that witnessed the sixth sign of the apocalypse. There was a heavy set hip hopper in front of me and I swear the crotch of his jeans were only 6 inches off the floor. He looked just like one of the Murderous Moppets from Metalocalypse. I went home and told my wife what I had seen and that the end was near, she agreed. She then informed me that the first sign of the apocalypse had occurred when we were just teenagers and someone had captured a picture of it. She hauled out one of our old photo albums and showed me a picture of myself at about 15 years old wearing purple corduroy bell bottoms and a silk shirt where the buttons started half way down your chest. I always wondered why I had that strange birth mark, I suspect the hip hopper has a similar one.

Here's a picture of a lawn dart in Idaho , about to penetrate some dirt :

Here's one in Utah , with just a bit further to fall prior to sticking in the dirt :
