OH, but now we get to go on about how we never cared anyway! It's a win-win for us, even when we don't win!

Yes, be very very quite, someone might wake Rooney...

Honestly, I was rooting for ENG but not sorry to see them exit like this... so much talent... when my teams underperform to such an extent I want to see them crushed. "Thx for making me root for you and then folding *ssholes."

The "beyond obvious goal that wasn't a goal" can't be overlooked, and the impact of it not being counted can't be dismissed, but still, come on!

Sometimes you own the libs. Sometimes, the libs own you.

Yep, sorry and squibbish performances from both our countries I thought.

Germany is a dangerous team but our defence was a shambles... For a team that is set out to be 'hard to beat' we were ridiculously easy to score against - woeful defensive positioning (John Terry in particular I thought) and no pace to cover, or defend a counter attack...

We missed Rio Ferdinand, just like you guys missed your imperious Nigerian-named defender (for Ghana's second goal at least).

No more official England football songs from me:

Like woman, I am a mystery.

It's never a good day when England goes out but that it had to come at the hands of Germany just makes it so much worse.

Guess I'm going to have to adopt a team to support now as I have no countries left with blood ties to (England and Denmark were the only two who made the finals). Been a casual supporter of Brazil since 1998 (first Cup I ever watched) so I wouldn't mind them winning. But I think I'll root for Japan as they've looked very impressive to this point. Just anybody but goddamn Germany.

Brazil has won enough imho, it's practically the Brazilian Open. I support your choice of Japan. I have been very impressed, Honda is quite the player. My second team was Mexico, Argentina look unbeatable unless Spain catches fire.

Speaking of which, Capello? I never understood why in such a nationalistic event - 2nd only to the Olympics - teams wouldn't have coaches from the same country... or at the very least why you would snub your own by not choosing home grown talent... I think he should go.

America loves a winner!

The U.S. won its group, and advanced to the 2nd round.

It accomplished this with two ties and one win.

In four matches ( plus over time ) of World Cup play, the U.S. team held the lead for a total of some 3 + minutes.

THIS is what has everyone so worked up over ?

Mind boggling isn't it?! It's so unlike any other sport.

Oh...and I forgot about the best part!

The 3rd world OFFICIATING!!

No wonder there's riots and such great loss of life after these things! Folks wait 4 years to see their country play, and then some moron on the take from Suckitstan makes up the rules and calls a phantom penalty when things aren't going his way.

I agree that diving and missed calls (there aren't that many for cryin' out loud) are the worst parts of the sport.

If I had been an English player and looked up to see the replay of that goal that was disallowed on the jumbotron I would have walked off the field. Capello should have pulled his players. I would love to have seen what Blatter's response would have been.

But have patience, there are things going on behind the scenes that may change all that and may change the face of the sport in general, or at least that's what will happen if the David Sterns and Roger Godells and NBA/NFL team owners AND ESPN get their way. Of course it might ruin the sport too.

You no doubt know about those NFL exhibition games in England? Test marketing as it were, ways to find out if and what the English might pay for - expanding the franchise to the rest of the $globe?
The reverse is true as well, kind of a trade of fandoms, and this year was the first year of the big push. (while we've been having our nano squabbles these guys were thinking big). This was the first year that ESPN carried this many British Premiere league matches and all in HD. 46 matches for the year, (one of the reasons I decided to try and get to know the sport better) culminating in the World Cup. The soccer powers that be were never going to have a better time to sell US on their sport.

What's at stake? 200 million new fans, increased interest in the local MLS, maybe ESPN 4, and gazillions of USDs. For all their glories on the pitch and for all the US properties that England owns, turns out they don't know how to make a farthing at sport, so they turned to us.
The research is almost over, and the big question - "how do we win over all of those $fans?" "Diving" and "not enough scoring" are the 2 biggest objections US fans have. So if you are a purist, um, give up. If the numbers were big enough to continue pursuing US fans via ESPN or Fox Soccer channel, then change is coming. Bigger goals, no offsides, sending off for diving, maybe even a chained lion at midfield... You think the Glazers are bad?
