Oh, shit, there we go; we'll be there for a few more decades now!
Quote:

U.S. military officials and geologists have discovered mineral deposits in Afghanistan potentially worth more than $908 billion, the Pentagon confirmed Monday.

Vast supplies of minerals such as iron, copper and gold, all with worldwide technological applications, are scattered over the country, according to the Defense Department.

But officials caution that it won't be easy to extricate, and it will take years to turn this newfound mineral wealth into actual revenue.

Seems that Nikovich is not only slow on the uptake , but also suffers dementia...

Quite some time ago , I pointed out the motives for being in the Afghan theater , an old Cheney scheme for a pipeline , and it was treated as if it were
'old news' that everyone already knows !

Now she spots a blurb on the same subject , and reports it as if it were 'new News' !

Agent Nikovich should get a job in broadcasting via mainstream media , like her fellow CFR globalist disinformationists such as Sawyer and Williams...

Hello,

What possible excuse could the military have for seeking out mineral resources in Afghanistan?

Hello Out,

What sort of pipeline moves metal?

From the article:

This seems unrelated to any pipeline scheme.

Petroleum or natural gas pipelines are for moving mineral
resources , Anthony.

You seem to entirely miss the point...Once an occupying Army is in place to benefit the georapists , then everything in the way of mineral or material resources is up for grabs ! The minerals mentioned in the article are for bonus points, particularly in the area of enhanced propaganda. The first casualty of war is always The Truth...

You're actually smarter than your reflexive impulses would indicate...Hopefully you will get a better score on your next outing...

Hello,

So... The nearly 1 Trillion in 'bonus minerals' mentioned by Niki is in fact new information not previously discussed in relation to a pipeline scheme? Perhaps we can avoid berating someone for mentioning it, then.

I would be in opposition to any acquisition or use of these minerals by the U.S. government or its partner corporations. Otherwise we are an empire of conquest, and that is not what I want us to be. I am rather disgusted that the military would conduct such a geologic survey at all. It implies a purpose to our presence that is at odds with the official line. It's sickening to see the lie made so blatant and obvious, as though they think all of America's citizenry will be anxious to get in on the plundering, with three cheers and a Hurrah.

All wars are economic, Anthony. Especially if they tell you that this time, it's really not like that.

And yes, you can bet your bottom dollar - or Afghanistan's bottom Afghani, for that matter - that we will indeed by lining up companies to rape Afghanistan's mineral wealth for fun and profit.

This may not have been why we went in, but it's for goddamned sure why we'll stay. Hell, if need be, we'll spend another two trillion or so in trying to militarily secure that mineral wealth for our private corporations!

Hey, it's what we do. It's what we always do.

Did you read the article I cited at all ? I have to wonder...

Niki got berated for not being fair and honest in her dealings with others...It's apparently a recurrent issue for her. It's hypocritical for her to run down an item of perhaps general interest to others , then try making capital of it another way at a future time. It's a one time thing , only it happens a lot...

I think that you and I are in agreement in principle on the issue of exploiting resources for fun and profit , especially when the resource most at risk is blood...

There's not a Country of company in the world that will invest a penny in Afghanistan until there is a semblance of rule of law. Afghanistan doesn't have the credit worthiness to exploit their own natural resources and no one is likely to do it for them unless we can establish continuity in the Afghan government. I'd bet their economy will still be based on Poppies 50 years from now.

Hello,

Out, I read the article you cited (also new information to me) that the Russians had info on this mineral wealth back in the 80's, and that the US government seems to be hyping the news now for political reasons.

I am unfamiliar with the details of your original Cheney pipeline thread where, apparently, Niki reacted with indifference? And that indifference apparently prompted you to become angry at her now? Without the context of the event, I'm afraid your current dismissal of her seemed needlessly antagonistic.

In any event, we are in agreement on the issue of raping the countries we invade. If you'd caught me in 2003 I'd be expressing very different views on warfare than I espouse today. Time and events have worn down my faith in government. I think the pivot point was when we started torturing people in Saddam's old prisons. Until then, I could tell myself that while we'd been wrong about everything else, we'd at least removed an evil monster from the nation of Iraq and liberated its people from fear and oppression. When the torture stories came out, I realized we had deposed one monster, only to step up and fill the void.

Mike, I'm sorry to disappoint you. Like some other people on this board, sometimes the truth has to smack me broadside before I see it. It's hard to get over the conditioning of my youth. It's hard not to fall back into that error of believing, just a little, in the flavorful propaganda fed to you when you were younger. I miss the taste.

Hello Frem,

To borrow from a propaganda flick, right now I'm in the "Aim small, miss small" stage of action. I don't have the energy or faith needed to change the world. I'll settle for the street I live on. I fear that is the full extent of influence I'll ever be able to have on the world, and even that much improvement requires a healthy dose of optimism.

Don't sell yourself short, Anthony - just by your admittedly minor involvement with habitat for humanity and your little documentary, you've done more than most folk ever do, and really, all big things are naught more than a collective of tiny ones, from atoms to galaxies.

I don't think you need faith or optimism to better your immediate surroundings, heavens know I do so as a matter of course (and might have good news on that shortly, imma check) and don't do half a bad job of it.

Yup, Anthony - you've already changed the world, just by being in it. And you've changed it in a major way, for the better, by the good works you do.

And I don't mean to club you over the head with a cudgel on the war stuff. I bought into all that same stuff. But as you grow, and see, and learn, you realize that there are no "clean" wars, there are no wars that don't decimate populations, there are no wars in which you DON'T mangle women and children. And, if you're very, very lucky... you learn that war should never be the first option, only the very last.

No, I had no knowledge of this issue until it came up yesterday on the internet and the news. I'm sure it did come up before, because it's also all over the internet that it was known long ago, and that it's being brought up now to rationalize our staying there. In other words, I'm learning as I go along, and came back to this thread to add the above facts.
Quote:

Now she spots a blurb on the same subject , and reports it as if it were 'new News' !
I've heard nothing about a pipeline, which is a different matter from extracting minerals from the ground, so if that's what you posted about, it's irrelevant. Afghanistan is close to my heart, so I invariably read any post on the subject, but I either missed yours or, given you said "long ago", I wasn't here yet then.

It wasn't a "blurb", it's on the news and internet in numerous places, as is the motive in bringing it up now. I didn't know that yesterday, until I found further information.

But your hatred of me is mildly interesting.
Quote:

Can you point out please where I 'ran down' this item in the past, because I don't recall it.

We knew there were large deposits of various minerals when we were there, but it was mostly semi-precious stones like lapis lazuli, which is the national gem and appears in most Afghan works, from jewelry to the gorgeous inlaid tables they used to make. I didn't know about the rest.

As to how I feel about it, yes, I've finally fallen on one side of the fence. We're not doing any good there; tho' I despise the idea of the Taliban taking power, something besides our occupation will have to oust them at another time, hopefully. We've squandered our resources and our people there, and if this is an excuse to stay, it's a predictable, disgusting one.

I'VE been berated for dishonest dealings? My gawd, you can count that against so many people here, and in so much more nasty fashions, I'm surprised you dare to say that. I don't make the kid of personal attacks others do, I've worked on moderating my tone, and I NEVER, ever get as obscene in my responses, as do numerous people here.

It's of a piece with berating Anthony, who is without a doubt the most compassionate and caring person here. Anthony; you care, that counts for a LOT. And you express yourself cogently and impartially for the most part, which counts for just as much, in my book. Ignore the idiocy, it's just that and nothing more.

Dunno where you got such a virulent hatred of me, Kane, but it doesn't bother me, just reminds me who and what you are, should I ever forget.

Hello Wulf,

What a sad world it would be where people never evolved their viewpoints and opinions. But by all means, when people finally find wisdom, let's beat them with a stick.

"Hmm...bad guys are in caves...what possible use could we have for knowing the geological composition of the topography?"

Hello Hero,

You'll have to help me out. What IS the use of knowing the mineral content of the topography? A geologist can tell you the type of rock you'll be blowing apart at a glance, but he can't tell you that there's gold or lithium there without a detailed survey. Are you suggesting that the military was worried that tons of gold were blocking their bunker busters, and sent in some geologists to enter the terrorist caves to have a look-see and take samples? "Pardon me, Osama, I need to drill a hole in this rock face. We're trying to figure out if there's enough copper ore in the cave walls to stop our 3,000 pound bombs."

The Iron Man quip is more plausible.

There's a geological reason we built NORAD in Colorado and not Florida. And its also why when Bruce Willis landed on the astroid, they did not want to land in the spot they did.

Geology reports can tell us what a bomb is going to do. Will it penetrate far enough, will the shock wave and overpressure collapse tunnels such and such a distance from the strike? Etc.

Also geologists can use technology such as ground penetrating radar and fancy smancy technwazits (patent pending) to map said tunnels so we can find and kill all Osama, Al Queda, the Arachnids or whatever. Many of the same tests can be used to determine mineral content and then some simple core sampling (since we're there killing bad guys, why not take a core sample or two in our spare time) can confirm the findings.

The world needs those resources and the solution seems simple. Move out the Afgan people and move in a couple hundred thousand West Virginians. Problem solved. I leave the 'what do we do with the Afgans' question to you, I'm thinking we stick them in Palestine and move out the Palestinians who would do at least as good in their new home...the Faulkland Islands (aka The New Palestine Republic). As for the folks on the Faulkand Islands...they can move to Arizona (with proper papers) and give them a reality TV show.

"since we're there killing bad guys, why not take a core sample or two in our spare time"

Hello,

Because the ore content doesn't matter, and not one dime ought to be spent figuring out what loot there is to plunder. Identifying the type and density of rock and figuring out the ore content of the rock are different things, requiring different work.

There's a mountain outside the window. I can see it from here. A geologist can tell you all about how that mountain will respond to a bomb without once delving into how much copper is in the mountain, much less spending the time and effort to determine the value of ore present throughout the entire mass. There's no point in pretending this is anything other than a loot report, much as it pains me to say so.

Worse, they are releasing this info and hyping it in the hopes that U.S. citizens will say, "Woot! Let's get some of that!"

Which... Maybe is what's happening. Sad.

Ehm, maybe not, Anthony. Geologists can identify stratigraphy and rock type at a glance, but some other analyses related to density/grainsize and etc might involve grinding up the rock for analysis, and some of those analyses will also yield information about mineralization. That is, if the geologists can't recognize the ore right off, which many can, or that they didn't have equipment for screening minerals in the field (some forms of XRD are portable, and will analyze composition in less than 30 seconds).

I do find it unlikely that we were unaware of Russian geologists and their assessment and interest in the region.

On the positive side, if were were to get our asses out of there (unlikely), maybe Afghanistan will have a resource to base their economy on besides heroin and opium. Afghanistan is one of the poorest nations on earth, and that plus the desert is taking a lot of their arable land, and things are pretty desperate, or at least it seems like to me. Niki could elaborate. But an inflow of money could raise the life expectancy to above the forties-range.

Really? I was "all FOR the surge"?

Can you show me some evidence of that? Surely you must have some, or you'd never make such a ludicrous claim, right?

I'll wait...

DREAMTROVE

Byte

Aghanistan is better off with an opium based economy, it's their opium diet they should see to. But overall, if others come in an help them with minerals, they're fucked. Outside overlords will be making decisions about the allocations of labor, economy, and where people should live, as well as environmental regulations, which is to say pollution.

If they can farm, they can produce food, and stay independent. Agricultural crops that are legal are artificially depressed, so no agricultural economy will ever get ahead by the books, regardless of how necessary it might be for human survival, unlike, say, oil, which we could easily without. (a solar roof assembly can already generate potentially more power than your house and car together can use. Oil for plastics can be replaced with agricultural products, oil is really obsolete. Alas, it's the obsolete who always fight the hardest.

Bear in mind also that scientists and science lies. The very power you talk of, the power to tell at a glance what is in the rock (hell, it's not that difficult) is the sort of hinge that gives our so called professional the owe to tell the rest of us which side is up. On CSPAN I've seen endless amounts of nonsense from experts because the morons in congress trusted their opinions. Doesn't mean they don't know, they do know, of course they know, but they can tell people what they want others to believe.

Hmm, well maybe they're just lying and it's an excuse to stay, but why stay unless there isn't an economic incentive?

I think we do think there are minerals there. It's possible the Russians were lying to US, or left documents lying about the minerals to encourage us to go there and get stuck in that quagmire.

It's either that, or it really is a Crusade against Muslims and Arabs, or its both.

Wulf:

1)He was never "my" boy. He was the lesser of two evils and someone I hoped would change things from the last administration, since it was patently obvious McCain would NOT.

2) I was NEVER for the surge. Show me exactly where I stated I was. I've been on the fence because I didn't want to see the Taliban in charge, knowing what that will bring. I just stated today that I'm off the fence; I want us OUT, period.

I'm not ruled by blind partisanship like you and your ilk, who love using "democrat" and "liberal" generalized pejoratives to toss out at everyone who doesn't agree with you. I take my time to decide about things.

My dislike of Republicans and the Tea Party are because of their own words and actions. I want a two-party system, at least, but the people on the right are almost exclusively making that impossible by their words and actions, and I abhor that. I also abhor the RWA mentality, and make no bones about it. But I don't have a "boy".

You are really, really saying McCain AND PALIN would have been better. I know you are; I pity you.

But he's never been "my boy". Continue trolling now.

DT, you nailed it. Completely.

Why would we stay in a war that has no financial incentives, Byte? You think there's no financial incentive for contractors like Halliburton to suckle at the government's tit? You think there's no financial incentive for our beloved military-industrial complex to do the same? You're not that naive.

And gee, I wonder why all this is coming out just NOW, when public opinion is more and more against staying...?

Well, sure, but that doesn't really say anything about whether or not there's minerals there. I'd think there's probably minerals, and they probably knew about them. Not only would they get all that taxpayer money, but there be something with value, a real investment they could get their hands on.

Just stealing from the taxpayers? Other wars, or peacekeeping events, there's always a specific motive and goal. Intervening in the Serbian War was so we could set up a base with missiles close to the former Soviet Union.

EDIT: You want a party system? o_0 Why?
