Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

Legislators in Hawaii have passed a civil unions bill that would give same-sex couples the same rights as heterosexual couples. We'll see if the Governor vetoes it; we'll see if they are as stupid as we in California were to overturn it.

Otherwise, it's a step forward.

Five U.S. states and the District of Columbia issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. Hawaii would join New Jersey in allowing civil unions.

Three states -- Rhode Island, New York, and Maryland -- recognize same-sex marriages from other states, according to the conference.

California recognizes same-sex marriages performed during six months in 2008 after its Supreme Court granted same-sex couples the right to marry and before the passage of Proposition 8, which overturned the court's decision.

Ours is untenable; how can some people be "legally married" because they were married on certain dates, but others are not because they were married after that date?

We're moving. Slowly, way too slowly, but we're moving.

I was unawre that California had over turned any civil union law. Wasn't it the gay marriage law ?

I'm cool w/ civil unions. Makes perfect sense.

Not so much w/ "gay" marriage though. But good for Hawai'i, I suppose.

Keep the Shiny side up

This is another step in the right direction, but until the Federal Defense of Marriage law is overturned, same-sex couples are gonna have problems with taxes, survivor benefits, etc. Never could understand why Clinton didn't veto it.

I just have to point this out, for the "LuLz".

As a Polyamorous Anarchist - what exactly do you think my opinion really is of the laws regarding marriage, bigamy, adultery, etc etc..

I say screw the lot of it, simply empower citizens to nominate their "significant other" with a single form irrespective of any government approval of their relationship in the first place.

Piss on their approval, it shouldn't be any of their damn business to begin with, seriously.

Well, it's not. Except for all the laws that restrict certain benefits to only legal spouses.

Now if we get rid of all those laws... then we're talking.

Simplest damn thing in the world, just pitch em.

Add a space on the 1040A and 1040EZ for you to name official "Significant Other" and "Next of Kin", and then honor it.

But of course, that makes sense, and it removes the problem as a wedge issue - see, most politicians talking all this shit, they don't wanna SOLVE the problem, they just wanna climb to power on one end or the other, and actually fixing what's wrong would deprive them of that ability, so hell NO they don't wanna actually resolve anything.

This, blue laws, "sin" taxes, I've always had a deep and profound bitterness at our government offering a pretense of religious freedom, but in every way possible, right down to the slogans on their money and whether or not your church gets a tax exemption, they support and encourage a single set of religious beliefs and morals above all else.

And as I curse in disgust at the very notion, what then freedom, if you DO NOT SHARE that morality ?

As always, their force, their threats, in MY life, telling me what to do with it.

What then, freedom ?
