Amazing! I'd like to think this is the first of many, but I'm not THAT big a dreamer...This is Tom Coburn we're talking about. He dog-whistles to birthers. He fear-mongers about scary lesbians infesting our public schools. His decision to demagogue on the budget led to thousands of people losing their unemployment benefits—something crazy Jim Bunning originally did just to be an asshole, which led to "mainstream" Republicans actually adopting it as a legitimate political ploy, just because they can get away with it. But now he's gone "rogue"!
Quote:

The staunch conservative Senator from Oklahoma, is now doing what seems almost unthinkable in this polarized political climate: Defending his Democratic colleagues from critics at Fox News.

At a town hall meeting, Coburn suggested that a woman who said "they can put us in prison" for not obtaining health insurance under the health care reform bill is misinformed.

"The intention is not to put anybody in jail," he said. "That makes for good TV news on Fox but that isn't the intention."

He also defended House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the architect of the House version of the health care legislation that he fiercely opposed.

"I'm 180 degrees in opposition to the speaker -- she's a nice lady," he said. The crowd could be heard responding unfavorably to his characterization.

"Come on now, she is a nice -- how many of you all have met her?" continued Coburn. "She's a nice person. She's a nice person."

"Just because somebody disagrees with you doesn't mean they're not a good person," he added. He then discussed his own experience of being vilified before asking the crowd not to "catch yourself being biased by Fox News that somebody's no good."

"The people in Washington are good," he said. "They just don't know what they don't know."

Coburn's comments were recorded by radio station KGOU and reported by Capitol News Connection, where audio clips are posted.

The senator urged his audience to "stay informed on the issues" and not "just watch Fox News or CNN -- watch 'em both." He said he reads the New York Times, Washington Post and Wall Street Journal every day to "get a perspective" and "know what other people's thoughts are -- not just what I hear through a pipe channel."

"I do a lot of reading every day, and I'm disturbed that we get things like what this lady said and what others have said on other issues, that are so disconnected to what I know to be the facts," he said. "And that comes from somebody that has an agenda that's other than the best interests of our country."

It's rare (and perhaps something of a risk) for a Republican lawmaker to criticize Fox News, whose hosts are generally supportive of the GOP agenda and can be a powerful force with grassroots Republicans. Coburn's comments cut against the suggestion by some Democrats that Republican lawmakers have been inflaming sentiment against them -- and could be putting them at risk of violence.

Coburn has been in the news recently for blocking a stopgap bill to provide jobless benefits because it is not paid for; he also participated in the flood of amendments to the health care reconciliation bill designed to slow passage by offering an amendment mandating no Viagra for sex offenders.

But Coburn, a doctor, was also an active participant at the bipartisan health care summit, where he addressed cost containment and made what President Obama called "some powerful points."

Yes, that's how she's always struck me. Somewhat bland personality, a bit deer in the headlights at times, sometimes clueless yes, but sinister pure evil like conservatives seem to think? No.

Lots of gaffes, and it's almost like when she's saying them, she doesn't realize she can and will be misconstrued.

Hillary, though, I can believe she's bad to the core. And knows exactly what she's doing. I think conservatives aren't wrong to dislike and distrust her. She seems like a female Democrat Cheney.

I just think it's fantastic (amazing?) that one of them is speaking REASONABLY, and deflecting "hate all Dems!" "Only FauxNews is right!" Wouldn't it be amazing if more of them...

Ach, me, sorry...lost touch with reality for a minute there. Won't happen again, promise...

They are human. I also think a lot of Republicans are tired of being measured by the noise coming out of FOX. He is not the first Republican I have heard being critical of that network. Unlike McCain who just stands behind Sarah as she spews her hate.

Oh indeed - and mind you, I never cared who her husband was humping, but I had *serious* policy issues with the man, not public ones, but just how much of the underhanded stuff he was neck deep into.

Traveler, I freely grant they are human, and that many of them have good intentions; my disgust has been their cowardice in not speaking the truth, buying into and fomenting FauxNews' idiocy, and in general being quite happy to lie and obstruct. I have to believe some of them don't like the course their party has chosen, and I don't know how many are cowed by the knowledge that, given the current situation, they'd bloody well NOT speak up.

Just as the Dems are ball-less in not taking on the Repubs and fighting to get what they know needs done accomplished, the Repubs are equally devoid of balls, to me, in that they're playing to the nutwing base and doing nothing but being obstructionist. No way to legislate, and unconscionable in my mind...as is the Dem's inabilit to stand up to them.

I was impressed that he spoke up. Not like McCain's "he's a terrorist"..."no, he's not" (I'm still convinced that was a plant, personally). But Coburn had the guts to speak the truth, AND to tell people to seek out the truth and not just swallow FauxNews' ratings-grabbing bullshit. That's pretty impressive, to me!

A clear picture of what is wrong with D.C. these days. Just like McCain, Colburn is part of the " go-along-to-get-along " inside the beltway mentality. Hey, they have to dine and party w/ these folks, after all. Can't be pissing off your bridge partners or that golf group which might need a 4th, for that junket down in the Caribbean. ( Looks like Rangel won't be making those trips any time soon. )
