"He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries. He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people and eat out their substance. For protecting them, by a mock Trial from punishment for any Murders which they should commit on the Inhabitants of these States."

BYTEMITE

Obligatory statement: not every cop or judge is corrupt, yadda yadda.

That said, I actually had this very argument with my dad last night when we were both visiting my grandmother's. He said if someone gets tasered, they deserve it. He told me that he thinks that cops have the right to do any unwarranted search of himself or his property in pursuit of criminals, regardless of whether he is one, and that he is obligated to comply.

By what? The law? Their guns? We pay THEM money to keep us safe. That money is often used to set up lucrative business such as speeding ticket quotas and the associated fines. I called bullshit on his naive faith and loyalty to a system of law enforcement that doesn't always have justice at heart.

He called me a terrorist. ._.

This is why I can't stand my parents most of the time.

I had that argument with my ex, towards the end, with much the same result - that being part of WHY we're no longer together.

Authority based upon the ability and willingness to commit violence is by it's very nature illegitimate.

And our founding fathers were "terrorists" too, who sought to enshrine a latent disrespect for that kind of authority in every facet of our culture, that they failed by no means diminishes their wisdom and foresight in attempting to do so.

The greatest gift of mankinds free will, is the ability and desire to commit heresy, to question that which is not to be questioned, to defy that which is not to be defied, to walk forward when all tell you to walk backwards...

It is by those very graces civilization came to us, and not by the guns of a violent authority.

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

Unfortunately, Byte, law enforcement is a business, just like any other - and it's being increasingly corporatized and seen as a revenue center for local governments.

Here in Austin, you have to pay a filing fee to even fight a ticket - and you have to pay it even is you WIN that court battle. That's fucked up. Yeah, you should have to pay court costs if you lose, but if you WIN, and prove that their case was bogus to begin with? How does that equate to "justice"?

I'm starting to think they're misusing the word. Or I'm hearing it wrong. Maybe when they say they're out for "justice", what they're REALLY saying is that the police and courts are looking out for "just us" - meaning just them.
