"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

Notes on the CPAC conference

James O’Keefe – "Watergate Jr." alleged wiretapper was given a standing ovation, but could only attend after getting permission from his pretrial officer pending his upcoming felony trial. And the “law and order” party just loves him… Irony must be a "family value".

Ron Paul wins the straw poll – A nod to the irascible old codger? Really? Or an internal take-over, a palace coup by the Libertarian wing of the conservative movement, just as I called for in the wake of the ’08 elections. Witness the flameout of 3-time straw poll winner Mitt Romney (22%), the spectacular crash and burn of tea-bagging favorite Sarah Palin (7%), and the crushing defeat of the party’s great white hype, Newt Gingrich (4%).

And whither Bobby Jindal, the former future of the Republican Party? He wasn’t even ON the straw poll, and didn’t seem to be in attendance at all. I guess his kind just aren’t welcome in the party anymore. Who am I kidding? His kind - some shade OTHER than lily-white - has NEVER been welcomed in the Republican party's Big White Klan Hood-shaped Tent.

Teleprompters. Much was made of Obama’s use of teleprompters. The funny part is, most of the bitching about teleprompter usage was made in speeches that were being read off of… (wait for it - ) TELEPROMPTERS! I guess it’s different when a Republican does it, right?

The Nancy Pelosi Pinata. So at this point, we can go ahead and admit that conservatives fully endorse domestic violence, and are unanimous in their support of violence against women, right? What’s the definition of conservative wife swapping? Letting someone else beat your wife!

The booing of one speaker who had the gall to come out against torture was a rather telling moment. Surprisingly, another speaker was also roundly booed for calling out the gay group Go Pride for having the temerity to show up at the conference, where he claimed the gays clearly AREN'T welcome.

I'm sure you must feel better after writing this, but I really do not. And you were generously non-hostile in your remarks. I would have been just a tad harsher on the entire freakazoid circus. Pretty damn embarrassing for me to see and read about, there's almost no place for me anymore in political groups...I guess that now makes me one of those cowardly and pisspottie Inipennents.

Being an Independent isn't exactly a BAD thing, Jongs. And being on "the losing side" of THIS conservative movement doesn't exactly mean you're on the WRONG side, either.

Also worth noting that when Paul won the straw poll, he was still booed.

So, much like the earlier Tea Party Convention, they accomplish absolutely nothing. Nothing except make themselves come off as all manner of stupid racist bigots. The scariest part is that both have managed to make the RNC and Chair Michael Steele look intelligent and powerful. His response to some of the more cringeworthy rhetoric was something like...."let's not be excluding people."

The part that really bothered me was Glenn Becks rant against progressives....

Did it make sense to anyone ?

How does this guy get the following he has ?

And ( I don't know the guys name ) running down the enemies list...

Something you'd expect from footage of an old nazi rally

No, it never does. He's completely out of control these days. He's on TV for 5 hours a week, plus some guest spots on other shows, and on the radio all week. His sudden fame and notoriety has gone to his head. He was recently named the most influential person on TV after Oprah. That stuns me, because I should be one of his fans...but I'm not. How hard is it to be a flame-thrower anyhow? What is his goal, besides ratings? He gets people all whipped into a pseudo-frenzy, then he slips out the studio back door into his limo and goes home to his gated mansion. He's doing just fab, but we're all supposed to be miserable because he's telling us why every day. Nice gig if you can get it I guess.

Or Limbaugh? Or Palin (or right, she's purdy). Take comfort Gino that there's plenty of us right here that wonder the same thing. The only way I might explain it has to do with key words and word algorithms that would take too much typing to explain - suffice to say it's not about intelligence, just pure popularity (word clouds, squeaky wheel).

Don't feel too bad Jongs, that party is now the party that encourages, maybe even requires hate.

Yeah, nice post Mike, thx.

Rue, that's the highest compliment anyone could ever pay me. I *LOVE* words, and think they matter, and find them moving (at the best of times) and enraging (at the worst of times), yet always vitally necessary for communications, while hardly ever being fully up to the task.

Hunter Thompson's essays hold a special place in my heart; I loved the man's coverage of political campaigns and issues, and if I've tried to model my writing on anyone's, his would be at the top of the list.

But I lack his insight and venom... I've had a couple letters and essays published, and used to write a column for a small rag, but it's not something I'd do for a living, for money. I love it too much for that. :)

Y'know, that really bugged me as well. Here was a man who has been trying to drag the Republican party, kicking and screaming, often railing against him, usually just dismissing him as "crazy", but he's been trying to wake them up, and NOW they say they're awake, and they're pissed at him for it.

It just doesn't compute.

And the gist of what I got out of Glenn Beck's rant was that he hates "progressives" because they're for PROGRESS, which he and the Republicans are firmly against. So they don't just hate "liberalism"; they hate progress of any sort. Got it.

No to the first, somewhat to second. But sometimes it's better to write with a lighter touch. People WILLINGLY get led along the path of your thinking that way.

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

I would have been more venemous as well, I'm afraid. Rachel Maddow did a walk-through at CPAC, and some of the booths she found just grossed me out!

Ron Paul may have been booed, but he also won the straw poll. They don't expect that to translate into a run for the Prez, or that he would be supported in same, but did you see where Sarahcuda landed?

I think Bobby Jindal has been dropped mostly because of that horrific "response" he gave last year. It was so roundly criticized, I think that killed his chances. Or it could be the other thing.

If the John Birch society sponsors it, exactly what else did you expect, actually? CPAC isn't representative of things any more than that Tea Party Convention was; those who attend are REAL hard core for the most part, so they don't represent Repubs in general. At least that's what I hope...

What I loved about Beck was his chalk board and the statement that they didn’t “WANT” to evolve. Hey ho, sounds good to me!

Maddow was a kick, she spent the day wandering around CPAC and said everyone treated her real nice, except one guy who got up in her face about being gay—I found myself wondering if this was the same guy who got on the podium and railed against gays...or there could easily be more of them...

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26315908/#35470993 (it’s 1:22 minutes in. Some of the stuff she saw was pretty predictable; some of it was pretty amazing. As she said, the Tea Baggers and Conservatives have no trouble right now showing just how “out there’ they are...one might say they/re even PROUD of it. Poor mainstream Republicans; if this movement either takes over or is courted by the Republican Party, where will they go??

I found myself wondering if that was Out2Lunch or PirateNews, since they both seem to be so into that as a core issue of theirs...

As these are the people who have at least a 50 -50 chance of running the US...

You think the Iranians are too wacky to have nukes ?

I'm thinking Canada should have nukes, and higher border fences after reading about these jokers...

And you're probably right, Gino, at least about needing the border fences.
