Anyone think of more things, whether these things are really obsolete or not, or anything that's become obsolete just for YOU?

We're entering 2010 with all kinds of new gadgets, gizmos, and tech tools, but let's not forget that we've lost a few things this decade, too.

HuffPostTech took a look back at 12 things that became obsolete this decade.

From fax machines to landline phones check them out (and get nostalgic) in the slideshow below!

I was rather surprised to see that SUVs didn't make the list. Nor did TVs, to the chagrin of many. :)

Oh that's bloody HI-LARIOUS.

Ummm.. I have that *exact* model of phone, sittin here next to my PC, plugged into a landline through the fax machine cause imma lazy old git and do half my paperwork via fax.

Of course, it's a VOIP line cause I am also a cheap bastard, and I tend to use wired equipment by preference since depending on your level of encryption a wireless signal isn't real secure.

One benefit to using outdated or obsolete technology is that it's generally more secure than modern stuff, especially when that modern stuff is built with government mandated backdoors that are hardwired in and illegal to circumvent - that's one reason why all my firewall and security ware is bought from overseas.

I saw the funniest thing the other day - someone had on sale a combo VHS VCR and Blu-Ray player.

I'm not making this up. In fact, here it is:

I thought maybe I should get one to hook up to my new 55" black & white flatscreen TV. :)

Maybe for next year they'll add an 8-track player or a LaserDisk to it.

Huff annoyed me with that story: I wanted a list, with a few words if needed, not a freaking slide show.

As to landline phones, " s' what I got.". You call my number, you get my house. If I'm there, I answer, if I'm not busy. If I ain't there, it's 'cuz I'm out doing something more important, like work or the grocery store or fixing the car or seeing my doctor or maybe out somewhere havin' fun. The reason you need me is more important to you than it is to me, and I pay for the phone. If it's real important to you, you can leave a message, or call back later.

Not that I'm doing anything questionable, but I agree absolutely. The spy-guys don't even need an easy-to-get warrant to eavesdrop on anything with a wireless segment. Under several legal precedents, if it goes wireless, you give up any right of privacy, since it's out there in the public airwaves, free for anybody to listen in. So the cops can.

So why make it easy for them? Make 'em at least fill out some paperwork and go see a rubber-stamp judge before they can legally wiretap you. Maybe they'll screw it up and you can get off on a technicality later, maybe even sue the bastards and get some cash back.

Besides, hard wired technology is more reliable. No reception problems, signal strength bars, "Can you hear me now?", no cat walks in front of the IR beam and blocks reception.

You just summed up my exact feelings. I pay for a landline phone (mainly as internet access) and I have a mobile that I got just for emergencies if I break down (I ride a motorbike). It is usually switched off and some of my friends can't understand why. They know I keep it off and when I see them they say "I called your mobile the other day but it was off. Why do you have one if you don't use it". I say call my landline number then and you'll get me. If I'm out try later. And if I am out then I probably don't want to be gotten hold of. I don't see why I should pay for a landline phone (99% of my calls are local and we get them free at night and at weekends which is when we are most likely to be making calls but there is still the rental) and then pay for a mobile just so someone else can get me at their convenience.

Oh yeah and I have one of those fancy new mobiles that actually makes phone calls when you press the numbers in a particular sequence. And text messages. That's it.

I don't think Huff's list is really that accurate either making it kinda pointless. The list itself says that wires haven't become obsolete yet has them in a list of obsolete things. CDs, landlines and fax machines aren't obsolete yet either. Although some of the other items have definitely gone by the way like dial-up and film based cameras.

Oooops, sorry and thanx Mike...I tried so hard to FIND a regular list, Newold, and then to get the slide show itself up, that I kept reposting and reposting and in the end blew it completely. I, too, wanted a text list… Huffpost! And
Quote:

Uhhh, didn’t we have something like that somewhere? I seem to remember… Didn’t work very well, either, as I recall…

Mike, SUVs are still quite popular. Will take a while before reality REALLY hits and people stop buying them...in America! Our love affair with the car, and as “penis enhancement”, still goes strong, unfortunately!

DT, shows how up with/ahead of the times you are. None of those are obsolete YET (and radio may never be), and democratic elections have been obsolete for ages already

I agree, Frem, for the same reason as you, about electronic media…I’d also say that older stuff was SLIGHTLY better made than newer, “planned obsolescence” stuff...only slightly, mind you!

PN: Not worth commenting on. Too obvious and stupid and representative of your own mentality and need to make a statement.

Geezer, I wholeheartedly agree with floppy discs and magnetic tape; close on VCRs (tho’ I still have one to tape stuff on) and lots of us still have computer monitors!

Gino: Absolutely BRILLIANT! Those are unquestionably perfect, and you win, as far as I’m concerned. But you kinda ruined your score with Sarahcuda, she’s still a force to be reckoned with where her “core” is concerned, not to mention still fodder for comedians, so not obsolete. Mike is right; there’s always a market for crazy!

Lwaves, yeah, we’re still on landline, too, and our answering machine takes the calls. I tell everyone that they have to wait through the message and say who they are before we’ll pick up. And we have it for internet and cable, too, so like you said, why pay twice? We keep saying we’ll get a cell phone (mostly ‘cuz Jim rides his motorcycle to work in the City, same reason as you), but we never get around to it...

Something not mentioned, either. Unless you take the list as satirical, most of the things mentioned aren’t really obsolete, except to those who can afford the newer technology. Many millions still use them all, because they can’t afford otherwise. It took us eons to go CD, because it meant replacing all our tapes, same with DVD; we JUST went iPod a few months ago. Soo....

When I say SUVs are obsolete, I'm talking about the old image of the SUV, things like the Jeep Wagoneer and Nissan Pathfinder, or the hoary old Hummer H1. The truck-based things that got horrible mileage and drove like what they were: gussied-up pickup trucks without neither sport nor utility.

Nowadays, nobody wants to call their vehicle an SUV. Call it a "crossover" or an "activity vehicle", but DON'T call it an SUV, or people will stay away, in droves.

The car-based crossover is the new standard. Things like the Toyota Highlander, the Chevy Traverse, or the Ford Edge are the new norm. They're not off-road vehicles, the vast majority of them aren't even all-wheel drive; they're little more than tall versions of our parents' old Vista Cruiser. But gods forbid you should ever call them a "station wagon", because THAT would be terminally uncool.

For the record, though, the station wagon body style is one of the fastest-growing automotive segments. Few car companies are willing to call their vehicles station wagons, though - although Cadillac is trying their hardest to bring the cool back to wagons with their new CTS Wagon.

Ahhh, Mike, I get'cha. When you explain it, yes, I agree, SUVs are obsolete--or maybe just the TERM "SUV", eh? Americans aren't giving up on their (relatively) big cars quite yet.

Republicans?
Gosh, I hope not...maybe "temporarily irrelevant?", but given we've only GOT two workable parties,I want 'em both until something better comes along! Certainly the way they're doing BUSINESS right now is obsolete; they seem to be stuck a few decades back in their tactics, eh?

Mike - my folks had a green vista cruiser ("with Jet-a-way action! V-8), with the windows in the ceiling - loved that car as a kid. Maybe that's why I have a soft spot for station wagons.

I'm with ya - I've got a soft spot for 'em as well. I just sold my Accord wagon recently, and was a bit heartbroken about doing it. Something was telling me I was making a huge mistake letting it go - it IS getting damned hard to find a sporty-ish wagon with a manual transmission these days. I went through mine and upgraded every moving part in the suspension, upgraded the brakes, and did some mild mods on the engine, rolled the fenders and tucked some 16x7 Borbet wheels wrapped in Pirelli P-Zero Nero rubber under them. It was a fun little ride, and rock solid with the cruise set at 100mph. (Not that I'd ever condone such behavior, of course... ;) )

Now it seems the Accord wagon may be back soon (after a 13-year hiatus in the US), but no word on a manual transmission as of yet.
