These extraordinary pictures reveal a bizarre event that is puzzling the science world - rocks that glide across the desert.

Amid the eerie silence and the 50C heat of California's Death Valley these giant boulders appear to move smoothly - and unaided - across the desert.

The rocks, some as heavy as 17 stone, edge along in bizarre, straight-line patterns across the ultra-flat surface of the valley. They can travel more than 350 yards a year.

Scientists believe the phenomenon is caused by a coming together of specific weather conditions.

Studies suggest a combination of 90mph winds, ice formations at night and thin layers of wet clay on the surface of the desert all help to push them along.

But why do they not go in the same direction?

Hello,

This looks like a daily average of 34 inches?

Which means an hourly average of 1.4 inches?

Which means if they set up something they oughta be able to see it happening in detail. I look forward to more information.

Apparently they move as far as they do BETWEEN rainstorms, as well. Notice that the tracks of the rocks have pulverized the dry mud cracks.

Interesting...

Could there be an almost sort of hydroplaning involved, the fine sediments creating a near frictionless surface? Wind might still drive the movement across the sediment, but because the rocks have uneven mass, they undergo the equivalent of a car skidding?

Perhaps there may also be strong cross winds in the valley.

Correct on all counts...

The playa surface is slippery as soap when it's wet...

The mountains make their own weather , and frequently create standing waves in the atmosphere downstream...Often , the wind intensity increases with a second or even tertiary wave peak , which results when the winds bounce against the valley floors before recurving upward...

Not such a puzzle , really .

Death Valley is the closest point to the Earth's magnetic metal core, 250 feet below sea level. Other salt lakes don't have this phenomenon. Pezioelectric effect from shattered quartz from earthquakes causes radio waves, plus surface rumble from earthquakes can also move rocks.

I've been in a tornado with "horizontal debris" and 6 giant trees smashed in my yard in 30 seconds, but no rocks moved.

I suspect it's magnetic levitation, as used by one little old man to construct Coral Castle in Homestead FL, twice. He used hand tools to cut, transport and erect 1,100 tons of solid rock, all by himself. Some rocks weighed 30 tons...

Quote:

To this day, no one knows how Ed created the Coral Castle. Built under the cover of night and in secret, at a time when there were no modern construction conveniences, Ed would only say that he knew "the secret of the pyramids." When he died, his secrets died with him, and to this day scientists and thinkers still debate Ed's methods.

If you had visited Coral Castle in the 1940s you would have been greeted enthusiastically by a man weighing a mere 100 pounds and standing just over 5 feet tall. He would have asked you for ten cents admission and introduced you to his fantasy world. As you moved around his sculpture garden in stone, and the significance of each piece was explained, you would have been witness to the great pride Ed Leedskalnin took in his work. Since it is documented that no one ever witnessed Ed’s labor in building his beloved Coral Castle, some have said he had supernatural powers. Ed would only say that he knew the secrets used to build the ancient pyramids and if he could learn them, you could too.

Uh, you missed Anthony's question: "You do know what levitating means?" What you're discussing is MOVEMENT; levitating means lifting from the ground, which wouldn't leave a track. Just FYI.

...Well...

There's two things here to be aware of. The earth does have a rotating liquid nickle-iron core over an inner SOLID core, which exhibits a dynamo effect, which causes it to project a magnetic field, which also creates the Van Allen Belt (good thing!).

Yeah, grains in particularly metal rich rocks (such as ocean floor basalts and other volcanics) will often have grains that align themselves to the magnetic pole just at the MOMENT they first solidify. You can then trace back the original location of the rock, before continental drift moved it. That plus age-dating is how we're able to project the locations of the continents millions of years ago. This also creates the Magnetic Ocean Anomaly effect at Mid-Ocean Ridges; as the lava bubbles up in the middle and pushes the two sides of the rift apart, thus lengthening the ocean floor (it's pulled under continents and melted in other places), the lava solidifies and magnetically orients itself according to the poles, and the changes in magnetic readings we took was how we found out that the magnetic poles change and even reverse. This is also how we measure the rate of continental drift.

The problem is with the levitating Death Valley Rocks theory is, the earth's magnetic field is actually pretty small compared to man made magnetic effects (30-60 microTesla, a small refrigerator magnet is about 20,000 times this), and the field only changes over several thousands of years, when the field may occasionally undergo a pole reversal. So moving/levitating Death Valley rocks via magnets... 'Fraid I'm gonna have to be a skeptic here.

Now, Ed may very well have used magnets somehow, but the Death Valley rocks are unlikely to be the effected by this.

Hello,

Coral Castle is actually of interest to me, being from my neck of the woods (originally.)

The best theory I've heard thus far is that the man made everything from home-brewed coral based cement. This was strongly suggested by evidence revealed when the front gate had to be replaced.

This is also an exciting theory about how the Pyramids were constructed.

The story of Coral Castle is a cautionary tale. It advises against Chariots of the Gods style flights of whimsy. People can surprise you, and often in the simplest ways. Psionic powers, supermagnets, and alien visitors are not required.

--Anthony

Edited to add: The creator himself said, "It's so simple no one will ever figure it out," once in regards to his building techniques. I suspect he was spot on. No magic or miracles or futuristic technology. That's the direction people think when they see something amazing, and they disregard the simple explanations.

Hello,

Here is a rational article about Coral Castle and ancient cement construction. You may disagree, of course, but it is at least a logically presented argument.

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

When I was young, I read 'Chariots of the Gods' and assorted texts by the same author. In it, he shows amazing things and ancient mysteries, and then he universally makes the same statements:

"Such a feat is impossible, even today. It would have been more impossible back then. How could ancient peoples have possibly accomplished this? They couldn't have, obviously. Only one alternative suggests itself."

As a child, I had a lot of fun imagining the supernatural or extraterrestrial powers summoned up by ancient builders. Sometimes I imagined super technologies held by lost civilizations, waiting to be rediscovered.

The author also shows cave paintings or drawings of things that defy explanation. Men in space suits. Men riding rockets. Alien men.

As always, the author posits, "It is impossible for it to have been anything else." He leaps immediately to the most exotic conclusions. It is a technique that served him well. His books sparked my young imagination, and I gather the imagination of many people. It's fun to wonder about amazing unexplained mysteries, and think about the profound and mind-bending solutions to them.

But at the end of the day, the writer suffered from a debilitating fracture of logic. He saw something amazing, spent a small amount of time wondering, "How is it possible, what could it be?" And then, finding no easy solution, leapt to extraordinary conclusions. He might even spout the old Conan Doyle maxim, "Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth!"

And so we go from a difficult construction puzzle to the illogical leap of alien intervention. Or secret mental powers. Or futuristic Atlantean antigravity. Or whatever absurdity we can think of. It's like blaming your poor crop yields on the old hag around the corner, who must be a witch. Imagining a witch's curse is easier than understanding climate conditions. It's also more fun, frankly.

It has taken many years and lots of study for me to realize the truth. Simple solutions are often the correct ones. Human beings are capable of amazing things, and ancient human beings weren't much different in their imaginations and reasoning capacity.

The reason we so often fail to decipher the solution to amazing ancient mysteries is because we assume that the explanation for an epic puzzle must be equally epic. It would almost seem to rob the world of its magic if something epic had a simple solution.

But I've come to really enjoy the simple solutions. I get a big kick out of finding out that amazing epic puzzle A has an easily overlooked solution B. It may possibly feel like the world has lost some magic, but the world also gains Truth in such ways. And Truth has a magic all its own.

Coral Castle will never grow old.

As for levitating rocks in Death Valley, something is obviously reducing the effects of gravity, otherwise they would never move. Sort of like air hockey, but not zero-G, perhaps a de facto 1/10th G.

Time-lapse photography and videography is in order, timecoded with weather measurements.

It's not so much reducing gravity is how air hockey works, but rather reducing friction. Hydroplaning is when water interferes with the traction of tires on a road, it's like the car is floating and skidding on top of a layer of water. With strong enough winds and water seeping under the rocks, this could happen during rainstorms, as I suppose you don't necessarily erase mud cracks with a rainstorm so there might still be mud cracks to smear, OR the fine sediments in the valley might themselves be acting to reduce fraction and the traction of the rocks, without any water necessary.

But these rocks don't float, therefore anti-grav is required before friction is reduced enough to slide.

Hence the ice-hockey-puck theory.

But normally ice freezes rocks to the ground, which increases friction.

WHAT IF: Video time-lapse shows rock movement, above freezing, without wind, in different directions simultaneously...

Hello Pirate,

"WHAT IF: Video time-lapse shows rock movement, above freezing, without wind, in different directions simultaneously..."

Then we would logically pursue the evidence, and consider all possibilities, and not jump to conclusions. And that's what you should do, too, even if it's more boring than assuming and asserting antigravity as a fact before actual testing is done to confirm.

What if Death Vally rocks behave like crop circles?

When I lived in Bicester Oxfordshire England, one morning I stepped out my front door and straw was "raining" from a clear blue sky, all over the neighborhood. No wind, no clouds. RAF Bicester has a gliderport with plenty of thermals. So I believe that real crop circles do exist. There's also a theory that thermals are electric.

Like crop circles, it's possible Death Valley rock formations are man-made.

Hello,

It's good to see you open to various possibilities, even those outside an antigravity premise.
