Well, while healthcare and bailouts aren't an irreversable catastrophe, climate change IS. It may be useless to try at this point, especially given China, etc., not bothering, but extinction and climate change (if left to continue) are two things that, once done, cannot be undone.

Recognition of those things which can be changed down the line--maybe by having to pay a bigger price by then, or having to recover from something worse than what exists--as opposed to things that ARE irreversable if not dealt with, is important.

Areas that have been strip-mined can be put back--perhaps not to the way they were, but to something healthier. Areas, like here around the Bay and up in Tahoe, which can be salvaged and returned to at least somewhat their more environmentally-sustainable condition, are different from something global that, once done, can't be undone.

Obama is obviously not an "irreversable catastrophe"...aside from the basic fact that Faux Noise is just full of bullshit. Every administration, whatever damage they do, can be undone by the next or later administrations. It's just more right-wing rhetoric to, yes, fan the flames of the base to attain their agenda.

Don't think I was paying attention. Sometimes I just have him on because it's 5:00, but I'm not really listening...I only watch Olbermann if timing is right, I'm not doing something else or watching a DVD. I prefer Maddow, who isn't quite so aggressively leftwing. Either of them can give me a bit of info that I can then research on my own, but I never take either one at face value.

He's been calling them Cluster Fox for a while now...me, I prefer Fixed News or Fox Noise, or Fixed Noise most of all. Not sure what he means by "Cluster Fox"...are you? I'd be curious to understand it.

As for angry, hee, hee, hee, that's a bit of a joke. It's pretty normal for him to go on binges about this or that and get pissed off...hence his VERY serious "special messages" or whatever he calls them. I'm not fond of those...he gets too over-the-top and it has no meaning, especially as he's preaching to the choir anyway. But I prefer his satire and sarcasm, at least I can get a laugh out of that, and, given most of what he reports on is so depressing, I need all the giggles I can get!!

Did you ever see the parody of him that (damn, I forget who--Affleck maybe?) did a while back? It was priceless, absolutely priceless, and kuddos to Olbermann for recognizing that and being able to laugh at himself.

Would be nice if ANY of the assholes at Fixed Noise were capable of laughing at themselves, but of course that would destroy their entire raison d'etre...being serious and angry and stirring up hate is what their audience WANTS. Gotta earn a living, after all...

I used to watch Olbermann pretty regularly until Rachel Maddow came on the air. Now, given the choice I watch Maddow, she's just so damn smart and funny and charming. Watching them both gets pretty redundant and her coverage is generally better, more streamlined. She brings a little more depth and breadth to her reporting. With Keith & Co. it gets to be a little echo-chamberish: "Isn't that a terrible miscarriage of justice?" "Yes, it is a terrible miscarriage of justice." "Terrible, indeed."

Affleck was definitely hilarious: "Mrs. Precious Perfect!!!!!" lol And yes, Keith gets huge "human points" for his gracious reaction.

Yeah, his "special comments" have gotten a little tired lately. I loved it back when he would pump them full of historical factoids and archival photos of Churchill and the like--I like it when people act as if the world were more than 10 years old. Mrs. Cavalier and I always loved when he'd turn aside and use his "fury cam."

It's interesting. Back when Bush/Cheney were in office it made perfect sense for him to get all Peter Finch mad-as-hell over things. Now, with a quasi-liberal administration, he can't go so gonzo 'cause we live in a much less black and white world.

That was the worst, worst thing the Bush Admin. did with 9/11: exploited it to make all arguments black and white, bringing medievalism to America and reinstating the Crusades. This whole partisan hack thing really wasn't the norm pre-9/11. Back then you could be casually cynical about the government and say the two parties really weren't that different, and they weren't. Back then you could listen to Bill Buckley and actually agree with half of what he said. But Bush and Cheney really, heh-heh, differentiated their party, now didn't they?

I'm glad we're back in a frustrating, nuanced mess and moving away from the absolutism of the last 8 years. Feels more like the America I know and love.

Oh, and as for "Cluster Fox"--it's a play on the word "clusterfuck," you know, an irretrievable mess where everything's gone wrong.

Yup, Olbermann was "the man" at MSNBC, and gave Rachel her start there, when she would fill in for him. It worked out well for her, and her ratings are now better than his as often as not. Her angle is details and digging, true investigative reporting (yes, with a definite agenda and viewpoint, but she's absolutely drilling down into the stories she covers), while Olbermann's gig is anger, snark, and commentary. Two different approaches to many of the same stories. I used to watch both religiously, but now I don't get to watch either of them very much. I *DO* still listen to the podcasts, though; I download them to my iPod and listen at work. (And I've written to both of them and to the network, telling them what I'm doing, and letting them know that I'm totally okay with them adding commercials into the podcasts, since they're missing out on me as a viewer, so they might as well get the ad revenue from having me as a LISTENER!)

Yes, that was one of the better moments of SNL last season, along with pretty much everything political they did. "This, sir, is an affront UP WITH WHICH WE DARE NOT PUT!" And it sounded so... Olbermann the way Afleck did it. His best acting job in years. ;)

It was his special comments that first hooked me on Olbermann. Somewhere late in '06, I was flipping channels when I caught Olbermann's "A Special Comment About Lying" - and it was a revelation. Here was someone actually saying - on TV, no less - all the things I'd been thinking and saying and being called a traitor and a terrorist for for the previous five years. I've been watching when I can ever since.

Because the only way you can get people to actually DO anything is to convince them it's life or death. You know the U.S. stayed out of the second world war for over two years before finally committing, right? And it took an attack on us to seal the deal.

Boy, oh boy did you nail it! That's EXACTLY the opinion I've come to. And I won't even WATCH "The Ed Show"...talk about rabid left-wing! I like Matthews, except that he seems determined to get his guests arguing; I think that's his chosen "schtick", but I usually end up turning it off the few times I watch.

I really appreciates that she digs into things; sometimes I find she's wrong, but either way it gives me a starting point from which to do my own research.

is also right on. The problem for me is that the right has fed so much into the unreasonable hate and so become the "party of no" that I worry how long this will go on. Aside from fearing violence will break out, I long for more of a two-party system (as little as it may be); not to have a sensible "loyal opposition" isn't good for the country.

While I wouldn't call his satire on Olbermann the best acting Affleck's done, I think it he nailed it perfectly, it was priceless and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Ever see "Dogma"? It's not really acting, but oh, gawd, do I LOVE that movie!!!
