DREAMTROVE

I want to just stop for a moment to point out some idiocy that is either the side effect of a new drug craze, the result of some plague, or maybe inbreeding, but here goes:

1. Okay, the President has policies I disagree with, but WTF? I mean, he can state those policies, and then promote them, he's president. When Bush went on tour to promote policy ideas like privatizing Social Security, I don't think people shot him down for it. Sure, they shot him down for dumb stuff, and they're free to do the same to Obama, but don't knock the man for doing his job.

2. Pointless partisan battles, or arguments over nothing. They waste space and time.

3. Necroposting. I think sometimes it's a perfectly valid thing to do if there is a topic that was discussed before that is for some reason important and you have something to say on it, and what was said before is also relevant. But if someone is just necroposting for the point 2 above, then other people should be smart enough to not get into it.

I already knocked John for spamming, I now have to know JT for necroposting. I mean sure, it's a valid thing to do. If there is a reason to do it. Also, I don't think if you post a year old story about Jesse Jackson on a new thread that it's any different than necroposting in general.

Here's a valid use of necroposting:

There's a thread about a topic that comes up again.

["the other side sucks" is not a topic]

The funniest thing about that, HK, is that Obama IS controlling what people do and think - he's just doing it to his opposition. THEY are the ones who've truly drunk the Kool-Aid. The rest of us are watching him, saying, "Yeah, I agree. Nope, don't like that. You're dead wrong on that one," and so on. The ONLY people who are truly mind-controlled about Obama are the ones who hate everything he does, because it's HIM doing it, and not their guy.

Mmm, Mike, I hadn't thought of that! But it's true, hatred of Obama has pretty much determined to the rabid right that anything he does or says has to be a reflection of his socialism, nazism, or whatever, so they don't actually HEAR or think about any of it; they just take the opposing side automatically.

Interesting concept. Of course, the right is encouraging that and finding everything they can to heighten it (like this latest one about him "indoctrinating" children...wha' the f??), but their willingness to buy into it without a single thought ABOUT the subject IS a form of manipulation. Interestingly, the contradiction is they're manipulating THEMSELVES! Fascinating...

On the original topic, however. I've never figured tha one out either; as I said, the other place I was had one person of the same mentality; they posted myriad links/articles/videos every single day of the most out-there, weird shit, all dramatically anti-Obama and/or anything his administration offered. I can't decide whether "necroposting" (I love that word!) is making a statement for attention-getting or what reflects their extreme beliefs in an attempt to persuade others. It's a conundrum.

But I know one thing: your'e not going to stop them with rational appeals. Or with anything else, I'm guessing. I sometimes think people like that spend hours on the internet just hunting up dramatic stuff to post...but then, on the internet, it doesn't take any time at all to find that crap. You're definitely dealing with authoritarian-follower thinking here, and you konw that's a brick wall!

Me, I have no problem with it anymore. I've learned to recognize most of them fromt the titles; when I have any question, I pop in--if it's from Piratenews, I don't even bother to look, I just pop back out. There, too, I don't think if every single person here (except the others who agree with him) ignored the posts, that he/they would stop.

Maybe there's one on every open forum, who knows? Just as there are always one or two people who are over-the-top in what they write, on either side, perhaps there are some who don't know how to interact any other way...dunno. Mostly just a fact of life, to me.

Wulf,

Any time. After all, if there ain't a free speech zone in the 'verse, then I'm not sure what this Firefly thing was about.

Nik,

Thanks, not original though. Necroposting, don't know where it came from, it's in wikipedia though:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bump_(Internet)
Netiquette is regarded probably with a fair amount of scorn here; people will post a gratuitous "bump" often. Still, it's generally bad form, and always to be looked out for:
Check the post dates on the right hand side. If the first date was a long time ago, then at some point there's a jump, and usually it will be one of the last few posts. This is very telltale, and points a finger at the poster. I tend to make a point of it when I do it, rather than sneak it through.

Re: the political debate:

I just posted to another thread, I get the feeling this is a sockpuppet debate. The govt. (congress, admin, etc,) have created artificial opponents to make bad arguments. In retrospect I think this happened under Bush also, and probably Clinton.

A sockpuppet is another username that is really still you. I'm using it here loosely, as in "If the pro-healthcare argument is created by the healthcare industry that wants a perpetual govt. handout* then the opposition is hired by the same group.

* Whether or not anyone agrees with a policy, it's not politics that makes policy, it's special interests. Some power must get behind an idea to make it happen, it never ever ever happens because it's "a good idea." I could apply this to virtually anything, but I'm fairly sure of it. When I think of policies I want to enact, I think of ways that some group could benefit from it, so they will want to make it happen.

Another common one you see here is threadjack, which is to change the subject. Under netiquette, someone could call "Topic" as I think you've done a couple times. That doesn't really work here, as threadjacks are just kind of accepted. Threadjacking on FFF is rampant enough that you can even retro-actively change the thread title to reflect your threadjack. This was discovered as a bug a year ago or two, and there was a ferocious debate about whether or not this was acceptable behavior. Haken actually weighed in on it eventually, and said he wouldn't fix the bug, though he could, but would just leave it up to us to decide. I think the majority opinion on this is that it's okay within reason. There are a few dissenters. If people just try to obscure a thread maliciously, then it's going to annoy people, but then, everyone has the power to change it, so things tend towards fairness.

I take issue with PirateNews' paleo-spamming. I think that these should be one thread, otherwise they clog the information channels. John's an intelligent guy and has things to say. He perpetually discredits his own arguments, and it takes a while to get used to his propagandistic style. (Frem is correct on this one: John isn't nearly as crazy as he pretends to be.)

I think you completely misunderstood HK, Dream. The way I read it, he wasn't accusing "you" when he said "you" - he was using the royal "you" - you all, you people, y'all, etc. And he was pointing out yet one more form of stupidity - posting the same video in 4 or 20 different threads. It's annoying. It wastes bandwidth. Post it once, post it twice. If people didn't "get it" by then, knocking them over the head with it continuously isn't really going to help. It's worse than necroposting - it's SPAM.

But, oddly, you DON'T take issue with Wulf's posting the exact same goddam thing, with no comment whatsoever, just the embedded video, in no less than four different threads so far. Seems odd that the one annoys you, but the other doesn't.

And, as you pointed out about John (PN), Wulf does indeed tend to cut his own arguments off at the knees when he starts to make a salient point, and then fucks himself by all but coming right out and saying, "See? Black people just ain't no damn good. They ain't even human, except for a couple of 'em."

Mike

I already ripped Wulf a new one at the time for spamming the video. I didn't want to wade through 20 spam posts to ref it.

But that's it's abhorrent behavior. I'm not going to harp on RiveR6213 for it, just comment at the time. OTOH, John knows he's spamming ever other gorram thread.

I thought HK was out of line here. That Wulf was out of line by spamming was obvious, but I always beat up on Wulf.

I took issue with HK's comment for two reasons:

1. I suspect it *was* directed at me. If he'd meant "y'all" he would have said so, or "people" or some other non-ambiguous term.

2. He was attacking the *content* of Wulf's post, which is just not right. It was relatively harmless, poking fun Leah Kauffman style.

I never take issue with HK, I think once in 5 years is fair. See, now you push me into calling out Wulf6213... but the thing is I *did* defend River when people were just mercilessly on her case, which was very very wrong. IIRC, you were the only person to acknowledge that when I said it.

What PN is doing is spam, in the original BBS usage: It fills the board and makes it difficult to find posts, reducing the actual communication efficiency. His manner of presentation is just as much of a threat to his own argument as his thing against Jews, but the former is also very annoying to someone trying to read what other people have to say.

I'm slightly discouraged that you seem to not read my posts. I never take issue with HK, I'm pretty neutral to John, and I beat Wulf on spamming at the time, but I hit him over the head repeatedly, but how many times can I whack a mole for the same damn thing?

Okay, here it goes, nice and simple, though I did this last time he posted one.

Wulf. WTF man?

I think the only thing that can be added to that is this:
If you don't like black people, why live in an all black town?

At least a jewish settler in the west bank or a Jihadist in Israel have reasons:

1. A jew might hate muslims and choose to live among them, but they get to live on the frontier, outside the law, with nothing to fear but reavers, as he sees them, in Hamas. I can drink to that, even if they cant ;)

2. The muslim is trying to live somewhere where there are jobs. It might be an idiotic social choice, but he may not have moved there, it may have moved to him.

You can relocate, or not, just shut up about it?

Don't be discouraged. If there's any fault for missing it, it's mine. I've been a bit in and out this last week, as "real life" intrudes on "virtual life". Real life trumps every time. :)

You could be right about HK; it's just that when I read it, it never even occurred to me that he was pointing a finger at anyone in particular, or in anything more than a general, all-encompassing sense. I actually had to go back and re-read it after you took issue, and I was kind of going "Huh... I never thought of it that way, but I suppose you COULD read that into it..." I still have my doubts about whether it was intended in that way, though.

Anythough, no worries on this end. You and I are all good. There are going to be areas where we DON'T see eye-to-eye, but that's a good thing, not a bad one; it gives us both a chance to enlighten each other.

I don't mind satirical videos--I rarely click on a video anyway, would rather communicate with real people. But this one HAS pissed me off, because it's been posted in multiple threads and has nothing to do with the threads I'VE seen it in. It's trolling, in my book, and spamming.

I find a huge difference between arguments and debates, and think the latter are informative and interesting. Isn't everything "partisan" in a way? If we never talked to each other, what sense would that make?

As to healthcare, universal healthcare is something we've been trying to achieve as a country for decades. Medicare was fought tooth and claw before they managed it; ditto Social Security. I believe the facts show we NEED to reform healthcare, it's bankrupting us, and I don't think special interests are behind it that much...if they were, it would have passsed by now!

There are facts on who is behind the supposed "citizen groups" promoting the disruption of the town halls, and they're lobbying groups paid to create "tea parties" and so forth.

For me, that's brief.

Nik

Wulf was spamming, not trolling. A troll posts in reaction to your posts as a perennial annoyance, spammers just post to fill available space. Both should be shot, it's just a semantic difference. I think there's an absolute book on this one.

Quote:

I didn't mean to touch on arguments, except to avoid them. I don't see the sense in partisanship. Rarely does anyone have a party they can completely agree with. People who just "fall in line" are suckers, either side.
Right now there is one... Go Tories 2010! <-- yeah, I really mean this.

Obama can be the ideal president if he sheds the Clintonistas. I don't hate Clintonistas because they're democrats. I hate them because they're sleaze. I like Obama, but some policies have me worried. I go policy by policy though. If Obama ends the war, tackles the fiscal crisis, or tries, would be a damn good start. Hell, I'll be happy if he just builds the railroad.

Quote:

As to healthcare,

...is complicated. The UN rated us "net zero benefit":
Saving a million lives/year, and causing the same in unnecessary deaths.
Needs serious quality control, too.

But single payer, even with the corruption beats the "You must buy healthcare."
(Does anyone even remember the constitution?)

My guess: a shiny dangle issue, like abortion: "hey, support us and you could win this!" It's a vote getter, why ruin it?

Social Security, OTOH, is a disaster:
Avg. recipient gets $0.03/$1 put in (infl adj)
2/3 of $ go to households with assets > $1 million. (that's official)

Quote:

I don't think special interests are behind it that much...if they were, it would have passsed by now!

Interests behind both sides. Insurance companies ONLY want it if it includes them. Financial sector trumps drug companies. I meant drug companies were stooging, because they have more K-street thugs.

Correction: The US is not a democracy. Democracy is a ritual, but it's not in the constitution, and so it's not technically necessary. Both Obama and Bush were "sworn in." This made them presidents, nothing else is relevant. It does not matter if Obama was born in Kenya, was a member of Al Qaeda, dealt cocaine, or is a socialist. He took the oath of office, and was sworn in as the 44th president of the united states.

I'm not sure I'd call it "bad news". It was my grandmother who died. She was 95 years old. She was sharp as a tack up until about a month ago, when she started trailing off a bit in conversations, but I was still able to have meaningful, intricate conversations with her about finances and money. She was a bookkeeper for years - generations, actually - and a teacher before that. She was teaching high school when she was 15. She was one hell of a lady, and I'll miss her terribly, but we met to celebrate her life, not mourn her death. She went to sleep last Friday night and didn't wake up; who could ask for a better end? She also lived to see her great-great-grandchild born a couple months ago. How many people have you ever known who had a living great-great-grandmother?

That actually DOES bollock things up, especially as he freely admitted he was doing it because he was "bored". Pffft...not worth the time or effort. Dream, I think it DOES count as trolling, since he was doing it as much to get attention and other peoples' goats as filling space.

As to the rest, there are always special interests behind everything, one side or the other, but I don't think it's special interests who began the effort FOR healthcare reform recently, I think it's an honest recognition of a BIG problem (fiscal as well as everything else).

Beyond that, I'm just willing to agree to disagree.

Mike,

Even a degeneration can be cumulative poisoning. My gramma died at 97, poisoned by the help, as determined by the coroner. It's hard to get anything brought against people in such a situation. They ground up fluvoxamine and put it in her food, which caused delusions, and then death, and this was listed as the sole cause of death.

I've had internet stalkers, it's not always cute :)

My great grandmother died when I was very young. Long generations.

6213. I haven't figured out the significance of that number. I'm afraid it was too close, that's why. Okay, honestly, they're not very similar people. But it wasn't meant as an insult, just a posting similarity.

For a look into a deeply disturbed mind... *(Yes, actually missing RiveR6213, and not as a target.)

Mischievous Necropost:

http://www.fireflyfans.net/mthread.asp?b=2&t=21425&m=667862

I'm sorry, this is a gorram disturbing thread, which is why I like it. And yes, an interesting topic in it's own right. I woulda thought Frem would be up for understanding... I get that interacting with Ms. 6213 is not a matter of pity or flattery, but the sort of relationship you have with someone at the other end of a gun battle, a lot like characters I try to put in my books. Sort of like Lucy minus Nyu. Strangely, she's sometimes quite personable. I've known a lot of persons outside of the parameters of sanity, and been several of them, but she's high up there.

We all kid, of course, but I'm serious, lurking RiveR makes this place feel more haunted than anything else. I kind of figured we'd recognize her, but I'm not entirely sure. I am sure that she's not Wulfie. Wulf could actually learn a thing or two. She might be RiverDancer, I don't think she's ByteMite... ;) <-- could always be wrong... Anyway, I admit to being careful in a post like this because I'm serious that she's by all means welcome back (I mean, we've put up with the rest of us for many years now.)

Okay. I'm seriously missing having RiveR6213 on this board, so if you are lurking, I have one question: Why 6213? I'll hazard a guess. Born in 1962. 13 went she got online. No wait... that doesn't work, Born Jan 3. Maybe, or 13 is just a lucky number.

Wulf and PN are not of a political stripe. Like the psychologist you posted, you seem to tend to mentally label people you disagree with as right wing. It's not that logical.

I'm fairly certain that Pirate News is a leftie, and Wulfie is on the right, and that if you put the two in a room, only one would leave, and it wouldn't be over politics that they killed each other, it would be over the whole black thing.

I'm not sure who I would put money on in an unarmed battle. I'd suspect PN is more of a marksman, but Wulf is free to challenge that.

River, and simplicity? Nah. I know she was born in 62, that's not a guess. It's also a common thing, esp. in the aol days, when you had to have a number at the end of your name, a few other systems did this. That would make her River62, then that leaves 13. I could be wrong about the how and why, but I'm pretty sure of my base facts. I can't explain RiveR, except maybe that it's river-cutaway shaped.

Late to the party, as usual.

But there are time when its GOOD to bring up old threads, to add a followup or new information to and old topic. For example, the additional information on Georgian soldiers who invaded South Ossetia being supplied with US supplies, meth and NMDA created a coda for that incident, and serves as a good learning oppty for the shit that happens behind the scenes which is usually not dug up for a year or more

Also, if I had more time I'd dig up the old thread on the Honduran coup and post how the new so-called "pro democracy" Honduran government is doing (taking all the usual repressive moves) and how the population views their new government (Most are against it. Only supported by the wealthy).

Niki,

"Wulf and PN are not of a political stripe.

Oh no, now I've done it. THUNDERDOME!"

WTF?

It's okay, Wulf, we're gonna use robots!

Also, the outcome is randomized. Popcorn? :D

*poke* I'm pretty sure DT was kidding. We don't wanna see the RWED become a real blood bath. Vicious enough as it is, at times.

Ohhh.

I thought it was more because PN is ex-military or something, and you have street-fighting skills and lots of guns.

Oh, well, I got some 'splainin' to do.

I'm sorry DT, wasn't directed at you.

I was using "you" in the most conversational sense of "you pays yer money, ya takes yer chances." The other options seemed to violate my sense of the casual and the humorous that I felt the post called for. I made an ass out of you and me that you'd know I wouldn't ascribe Wolf's boneheaded sense of humor to you. That said, I don't see my comment as remotely out of line.

You're topic was stupidity. And posting an irrelevant video of a tiresome, threadbare broadside on the President that bears no resemblance to reality in all the top threads of the day is the operational definition of stupid. And Jumpin' Jehosaphat, calling a thing stupid IS NOT censorship!

Sometimes, Dream, you (yes, you in particular ) needa chill a smidge out. It's kind of a classically partisan move to paint any criticism as tantamount to CENSORSHIP and claim the critic is somehow endangering free speech. I know you're not into partisan attacks. I think you sometimes take things a tetch personal and that can distort your rhetoric. You can get kinda paranoid sometimes, and back-engineer ill intent where there may only be chaos and misunderstanding. It can be wickedly hard to disprove a paranoid conclusion, so I hope you take my word for it and accept my apology.

Hey, hey, hey, don't be mean. We don't have to be mean, because, remember, no matter where you go, there you are.

Ignorance and lack of training, you ask me.

You got enough bling for a gat, you got enough for a decent IWB holster - and one thing you learn from any decent training is to never, EVER grab for a dropped gun, cause of this very risk.

Tell ya this much, that boy's definately earned a name for hisself on the corner, cause you KNOW they'll all be callin him Shorty now.

NMDA?

Wulf,

Don't be a target? I was suggesting you and pirate news duke it out in the thunderdome Just be fun to watch is all.

Oh, and BM is right, I was snarking. It was not I who put you in a box with Pirate News, it was Niki. I was pretty sure the two of you would kill each other.

HK,

Yah, stupidity, reposting the video was stupid. The video wasn't stupid. It was fair. But the way wulf posted it was stupid.

The way I read the post, looked like you were saying that I had posted it. Not paranoid, just wanted to correct that misconception that I had.

Kinda classically partisan to treat criticisms as partisan, also. Remember Bushies reacting that way to every criticism of Bush? It's just a way of discounting the criticism, so not very valid. Me, partisan? Unlikely.

Wulf, I don't know about, I don't speak for wulf.

Wulf,

Had to laugh at the link. Poor shmuck, going off half-cocked.
