Israel 'has right to rein-in Iran'
Iran insists its nuclear enrichment facilities are intended for civilian use

Israel has a sovereign right to decide how to deal with Iran's nuclear ambitions whether the United States agrees or not, Joe Biden, the US vice-president, has said.

In an interview on ABC's "This week" programme on Sunday, Biden said Israel can determine for itself how best to deal with the threat of a nuclear-armed Iran.

"We cannot dictate to another sovereign nation what they can and cannot do when they make a determination, if they make a determination, that they're existentially threatened," Biden said.

Binyamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, has signalled that he agrees with President Barack Obama's end-of-the-year deadline for progress in efforts to engage Iran diplomatically to resolve a dispute over its nuclear programme.

Military action

Netanyahu, who took office in March, has said Israel cannot allow Iran to acquire nuclear weapons and has not ruled out a possible military strike against Iran.

Alaeddin Broujerdi, the head of Iran's parliamentary committee on national security and foreign policy, said Tehran was ready to take "real and decisive" action if Israel attacked its nuclear facilities.

"Both the US and Israel are aware of the consequence of an erroneous decision," Broujerdi told reporters at the Iranian embassy in Tokyo.

"I believe our response will be real and decisive," Broujerdi said.

He declined to elaborate.

Israel has said a nuclear-armed Iran would be a threat to its existence, noting calls by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Iranian president, that Israel should be wiped off the map.

Iran denies it is enriching uranium for military purposes, saying its nuclear development is aimed at generating electricity.

Israel bombed a site in Syria in 2007 that US intelligence officials said was a nearly completed nuclear reactor being built with North Korean help.

In 1981, Israel bombed an Iraqi nuclear reactor.

'Sovereign right'

"If the Netanyahu government decides to take a course of action different than the one being pursued now, that is their sovereign right to do that. That is not our choice," Biden said.

"But there is no pressure from any nation that's going to alter our behavior as to how to proceed."

The UN Security Council has imposed three sets of sanctions on Iran for defying its demand to suspend uranium enrichment, which could also be used to produce nuclear weapons.

The United States has joined Russia, China, France, Germany and Britain in inviting Iran to talks to resolve the nuclear dispute.

Meir Dagan, Israel's Mossad intelligence chief, said last month a world embargo had altered the course of Tehran's nuclear programme since 2003, but that Iran could have an atomic weapon by 2014 unless these steps were intensified.

Great.... If the US is going to stay out... then stay all the way out. Quit arming Israel, quit proping up their economy with your foreign aid and if they go and kick a hornets nest... let them be stung. They are their own worst friggin enemy, and without the US backing them up maybe they will shut up, or be reigned in by their own people.

Israel is as much as a threat to peace as anyone, by Bidens logic you can guess what an appropriate response will be...

If the US allows Israel to cross American controlled Iraqi airspace to attack Iran, it would be hypocritical to bitch if Iran crossed the same airspace to retaliate.

Joe Biden is a ass, he is starting to make Sarah Palin look smarter... I'm wondering if his role is to say something stupid enough to change the topic of conversation when Obama wants an issue put on the back burner.

Maybe Iran needs nukes, at least they haven't bombed their neighbors lately, unlike some...

Iran attacks Biden's Israel remarks
Biden said the US would not stand in the way of Israel in its dealings with Iran's nuclear ambitions [AFP]

Iran will hold the US responsible for any Israeli attack against the country, Ali Larijani, the speaker of Iran's parliament, has said.

His remarks came after Joe Biden, the US vice-president, said that Washington would not dictate the way Israel deals with Tehran's nuclear ambitions.

"We will consider the Americans responsible in any adventure launched by the Zionist entity," Larijani said in Doha, the capital of Qatar, on Monday during an official visit.

"No politician or person in the world can imagine that the Zionist entity can lead an operation without getting the green light from the United States."

Larijani said the Islamic republic's response to an attack would be "decisive and painful".

Israel's interest

Biden said in an interview on Sunday that the US would not stand in the way of Israel in its dealings with Iran's nuclear ambitions.

"Israel can determine for itself - it's a sovereign nation - what's in their interest and what they decide to do relative to Iran and anyone else," he told ABC television.

"Whether we agree or not. They're entitled to do that ... We cannot dictate to another sovereign nation what they can and cannot do when they make a determination, if they make a determination, that they're existentially threatened."

Larijani said Biden's comments was "political manoeuvre. We have heard a lot of these words in the past".

"Biden, by saying that they (the United States) can't prevent such an operation, has taken the wrong route and revealed his card".

Asked about US calls for dialogue, Larijani said: "We want to work seriously. ... But on one side they tell us 'we want to resolve the problems and negotiate', on another we hear what Mr Biden says."

No 'green light'

Following the controversy triggered by Biden's interview, the US administration denied that it was giving Israel any green light to attack Iran or that it was reconsidering plans to engage diplomatically with Tehran.

"I certainly would not want to give a green light to any kind of military action," Ian Kelly, the US state department spokesman, said late on Monday.

But he echoed Biden's point that Washington considered Israel a "sovereign country" with a right to make its own military decisions.

"We're not going to dictate its actions," Kelly said.

"We're also committed to Israel's security. And we share Israel's deep concerns about Iran's nuclear programme."

Kelly brushed aside the idea that Biden was signalling a move by the Obama administration to drop its policy of diplomatic engagement with Iran, saying: "I wouldn't read into it any more than what you see."

US politician urges Iran 'sabotage'
Gingrich says the US should target Iran's oil and gas infrastructure to topple the government [EPA file]

The former speaker of the US House of Representatives has said that the US should "sabotage" Iran's oil and gas infrastructure as part of its efforts to bring down the government.

In an interview with Al Jazeera's Avi Lewis for the Fault Lines programme, Republican Newt Gingrich said targeting Iran's refinery would spark an economic crisis that would destabilise the government in Tehran.

He said the US should "use covert operations … to create a gasoline-led crisis to try and replace the regime".

"I think we have a vested interest, the world has a vested interest, in a responsible Iranian government, just as we have a vested interest in a responsible North Korean government," he said.

When Israel strikes, Iran will fire it's silk worm missiles into the gulf. This will knock out the world's oil supply overnight. Refineries, rigs, ships you get the picture. US will have to intervene. So will China and Russia. France will come only when America has secured the area. But hey don't sweat it will be drilling in Alaska now, off the east coast, Utah, and Colorado. This will give a boom to the economy.
