I'd rather have a straight forward debate on the issues, but instead, you seemed hell bent on hurling inane , childish insults an all things good and decent, straight out of the box. It's not even though you make a rationale point, and then hurl your insults, you just come out w/ the insults, and add nothing else.

Oh give it a rest! I've read some of your so-called debates/interactions with other people here in this forum, and it is far from anything resembling a debate. When no one agrees with your damaged, fascist views you deteriorate into a ball of insults, and sarcasm. When you don't understand something your default argument is to call them a liberal, and you say it like it actually is the sum of the whole conversation. In my mind that's pretty childish, and it shows you are rather limiting in your Rush Limbaugh, soaked mind. Basically you are not worth debating with; you are only worth insulting. It's trash like you that wrecked this country. Go outside and shoot yourself because no one really cares about what you think.

With that bit of nonsense out of the way, I'm off to lunch with my liberal, elitist friends.

Point of fact - Reagan's biggest tax cuts didn't happen till the last two years - just in time, apparently, to torpedo the economy for George HW Bush.

I have a vote and I'm not afraid to use it!

So let me get this straight:
Reagan dropped taxes from 50 to 28% and the country tanked, HW raised them from 28% to 31% and the country tanked, and Clinton raised them from 31% to 39% and the economy truly did roar.

I'd say that argues for a minimum top tax rate to be between at least 39% for the economy to do well.

And if you look at the figures, during the "good old days" that Conservatives are always pining for - the Eisenhower era - the top tax rate was right at 91%, if I'm reading that chart correctly...

So a rate between 39% and 91% seems to be the "sweet spot" where the economy really just booms along, right?

Except you leave out one very important number: On the last day of Bush's presidency, the Dow closed below 8,000. I keep reminding you of that, but you keep forgetting: under Bush, the Dow went from a peak of over 14,000, to a low of under 8000 - a drop of nearly 45% ON HIS WATCH!!

So, after four or eight years under Obama, do you still think it will be below 6600? If it's not, if it closes higher than 6600, will you deem Obama's administration a success?

By the way, the Dow closed at 10,587.60 on January 20, 2001, the day Dubya took office. Eight years later, it closed below 8000 on the day he left office - a net loss of right at 25%, not adjusted for inflation. Would you call that "on fire"? Would you deem his administration a success?

Yup indeed!

Apparently everyone in the country KNEW that Obama had already won the upcoming election when the markets started to tank in July and August, and they most certainly knew when the subprimes started tanking over a year before that.

Right, Lapdog?

Of course, back then YOU were so smart and omniscient that you KNEW McCain had it wrapped up, remember?

Look, the kid seems to mean well, but he's got some funny notions. "Conservatism is an ideology of protecting the people and the people's rights." And by that he means, of course, the right to enrich yourself (further) with Government backing. Which is to say, he'd rather have no Government; but if one is needed, then one who will just cater to the super rich, please. What was it again that George W. said?

"This is an impressive crowd. The Haves, & the Have mores. Some people call you the elite. I call you my base."

So, it's cute and all to hear the kid feebly defending that it's really, really, not a partisan thingy, but let's face it, it's always been about the Grand Old Party, and who they need to elect to lower their taxes even further.

No, the kid was right. He reflected what Reagan and Thomas Pain both thought, that limited Gov't si the best Gov't. That's not anything near saying " enrich yourself w/ Gov't backing ". It means all should be free to enrich themselves as they desire, and are capable, w/ OUT the Gov't interring.

Government, even in its best state, is but a necessary evil; in its worst state, an intolerable one.

As a liberal, you would obviously find that a funny notion, and be confused about it. However, that is what we conservatives consider a serious notion, which we believe much more than your liberal silliness.
And, of course, Rap is again correct - GWB was not a conservative. But he was more conservative than Dole or McCain, which was why he won and they did the opposite. RWR was more conservative, which was why his second election was such a landslide.

Your chart is very informative. Some would argue that it is Reagan's other tax cuts that ushered in the longest period of sustained growth since WW2.

I note that your chart is very informative because the dramatic tax cuts it reflects freed up capitial investments that later funded the tech boom. Existing tech companies expanded and other companies were created by wealthy investors in the late 1980s to develop and exploit the technological breakthroughs that transformed society in the 1990s.

I would further argue that it was Clinton policies that began our economic crisis just over ten years ago when Clinton went after Microsoft and burst the tech bubble. First tech, then energy, then finance, then industry and housing.

But thats ok...the solution is to raise taxes so nobody can invest in anything and everybody get forced out of business. That way there will be no jobs, no taxes, no income, no unemployment (because if there are no jobs...nobody does not have one), no safety, no health care, no Ipods, no new Star Trek movies, and we'll all be eating chinease food delivered by European international relief agencies and handed out by Muslim missionaries. That's the change we can believe in.

The tech boom was fueled by low interest rates, just as the housing boom was fueled by low interest rates. The only difference is that under Clinton, the low interest rates came about because the government was no longer borrowing money like a madman, while under GWB the interest rates were forced down artificially by Greenspan in order to avoid the Kondratieff Winter (great depression)- as Greenspan HIMSELF said.

Of course, it could also be claimed that the tech boom was the result of REGULATION - specifically, the anti-trust regulation and lawsuit that broke up Ma Bell in 1982, and led to the "Baby Bells" of 1984, which in turn led to competition in the telecom sphere, which fed innovation and led to the tech boom of the 80s and 90s...

I don't know any reasonable argument that can be made that Obama is responsible for the economic problems he found on Jan 20...except for his limited and more general responsibility as a US Senator who failed to deal with the problem prior to taking office (its not like he comes in completely clean...) The economy was in bad shape. That was the result of failed policy that dates back to 1998, failed policy that President Bush in two terms failed to deal with.

Obama did not fail to deal with the failed policy. He delt with it and now either the resulting economic turmoil OR the resulting economic recovery will be his responsibility
Quote:

The tech boom came about because rich folks in the 1980's funded companies and research that developed the "tech" that later boomed. Capital meant research, it meant factories, it meant marketing, not to mention production, infrastructure, and jobs.

Low interest rates meant folks could buy more expensive products in the 1990s from those companies. That created new capital that started new companies and streamlined the marketplace resulting in price drops on existing products as well as a larger variety and the development of all new products.

Look at your IPod...now imagine its 1987...how much did that IPod cost. Research, development, production, marketing, not to mention the internet, MP3 format, TimeWarner's DSL service, the handy little computer your plugging it all into (which probably has as much computing power and memory as every computer in the country, combined, in 1987...outside the military that is).

Your cell phone...a phone that goes anywhere and fits in your hand...impossible...Star Trek...first we need technology, anybody got a plastic factory for cases, maybe we can make the whole thing light up when you dial...need somebody to invent and manufacture tiny LCD displays...we'll need a loan...naw, I know a guy says he can get as some investors.

Its 1987, do you know where your capital is taking us?

Enter 1997. Boy I'd like a new computer, but it costs $2000. Thats ok...in the mail today I got 653 credit card offers.

2009? Hmmm...I've got this idea for a quantum whatzzit that will make radio, TV, and internet completely obselete, all I need is one person to invest. "Sorry, seems like a good idea, but my taxes just went up, my net worth is now half what it was, and I'm putting all my spare cash into gold. Come back in four years."

Actually most of modern technology was created off the back of research conducted at publicly funded institutes such as universities.

Dude, are you off your meds again? What the fuck are you talking about?

Also, how is it more despicable to "drudge" up racism and/or hatred on a "fine young man" than to do the same to, say, the President of the United States, Barack Obama? Or decorated veterans such as John Kerry or Jack Murtha? Because I've seen an awful lot of racism and hatred "drudged" up by Republicans against those folks.

But that was different, huh? Ain't it always, when it's you doing the "drudging"...

When has Bush done anything but keep his word ? He's done petty much what he's said, which is a rare quality for any politician.

Think about it. There can't be a big dip in the economy unless there were say....57 straight months of growth. If you're at a low point, then you can't fall very far. But if you're actually at a high point, in terms of dow jones, low unemployment, there's really no where else TO go , but down.

Bush economy validated.

How many quarters of positive growth you overlook, and 1 bad day, it's all Bush's fault ?

Trickle down works. Always has, always will. But there will always be bumps in the road. Lots of forces impact the market.

Adjustments happen, and only the foolhardy will make this out to be more than it really is.

The last one was from December 2007. I guess my question is - has the economy finished "adjusting" yet?

Villify? Racism? Hatred? Am I missing something? No one touched the child! Not even with kid-gloves. :) Not a one. Saw some charts, a bit about Reagonomics (that Bush Senior once called "voodoo economics" -- Gee, this brings back memories to Ferris Bueller's Day Off, but I digress), but scarcely anything about the kid, let alone AT the kid.

Actually, if you must know how I feel about the kid, so clearly being used as a patsy/sockpuppet by his grown-up 'friends,' I'm still deciding whether that's funny or sad. I'm leaning towards sad, though (after all, it's kinda sad when the grown-ups in his Party can't even find a plausible adult any more to tell their story). Other than that, he seems bright enough. I'm sure he'll figure things out for himself soon enough. And I wish him the best of luck.

Quote:

W, sad to say, wasn't a conservative. He was a party man, and one who held the office of President above that even of the Party, the Constitution, and quite possibly, the country itself.

Now before you say he held he the office of President above the Law, too, already two out three things you mention, holding the office 'above the Constitution, and quite possibly, the country itself,' are things usually associated with dictatorships. So I'm not so sure you really meant to go there. Rising above the Party, good; rising above the Constitution, and quite possibly, the country itself, not so much. :)

For someone who has the GOP in his tagline, surely the irony -- of being in denial about this always being about the Party -- cannot elude you. :)
