I thought that in the interests of time management, and keeping members on the forum, I would create a subtype of thread, the serenity thread.

This is denoted by ending your Subject header with 平静

These rules are only intended to apply to all posts with (no exceptions) within serenity threads, denoted by the characters, which you can copy and paste

The rules for a serenity thread to be discussed here, feel free to contribute. The goal is to allow conversations to hit a level of succinct if not civil discussion of the sort that the characters in the show might have, directed at more concise language, less bickering, more action.

I humbly propose a starter of these:

1. Why are we still talking about what's already been decided? A lot of arguments go on between people who know they disagree, and are not content to disagree even though they know that they are not going to convince the other person. If Mal and his crew went at it for days on end on some topical disagreement, someone would pick them off.

2. Keep it snappy. edit your post, and see if we can't get things stated clearly and interestingly in a few words. Hamlet's soliloquy is not needed to explain why you disagree with a political position on something, or whatever.

A lie can be a trap to provoke the truth into a debate. The lie seeks a compromise between itself and the truth, making the half-lie the new accepted truth.

Therefore, the truth's best defense is not to engage in debate with the lie.

That said, I intend these specific rules only to apply to threads carrying the Serenity signature:
平静

I think that this is entirely valid if high handed thing to secure, because it is in keeping with the rules of the ship. I'm sure the verse is filled with dens of endless quarrelling and limitless rants, but Serenity is not. Perhaps that is what makes it Serene. I want to add one

3. No trolling. Mal hates that sort of thing, and it's not serene. It's still a rough and tumble crew, but there is a sense of order, if not sanity.

The goal here is to create havens for calm communication on topics, without dictating to anyone else any rules outside of the marked threads.

Since we can't prevent trollish, argumentative or endless posts, we'll simply post 平静 in reply to them, and they can edit. Otherwise, they can remain ignored.

Essentially, I see too much time wasted, and three people in a row said they were abandoning the forum because it was just endless partisan bickering, insults and a total waste of time, and all were long term members.

I felt it necessary to create a new type of thread.

This does not mean that you cannot start a jihad on another thread, go write ahead. But not on these 平静 thread.

4. I'm not claiming a copyright, or a dictatorship on this, anyone can contribute to this thread anything that is consistent with the serenity rules for behavior, as expressed on the ship.

Furthermore, anyone can create a serenity thread and demand these civility rules be obeyed on that thread by simply copying and pasting 平静 to the end of their thread title.

As for the rest of the forum, it's bound to remain full of reavers, alliance, blue sun, and just longwinded argumentative and trolling comments not welcome on the ship.

Its an experiment in communication, and I would like a few people to humor me. I think that there is a large majority of the "not currently posting" who are avoiding doing so because of the level of crossfire, and the time cost of reading and posting.

Rap,

You're pretty terse, I'm not sure what reaction you get from snarking yourself just now.

I like the pick, the quote and sigs are irrelevant and all of it uses up space.

But space isn't the major issue, the major issue is time. A number of those not currently posting are not doing so because of time. Posts are too long, to read, and require a lot of response, and often there are arguments about things over which we have no power, that are full of sound and fury signifying nothing.

Which is another good point. A lot of people have said that they aren't posting anymore because of the level of hostility, base accusations, invectives, etc. It's okay to be Jayne Cobb, but it's not okay to just continually bicker whine and bitch (frankly, I think that Inara was furthest out of line... but) Still, the way people behave here sometimes, you know Mal would just cap em and say, aw, someone clean up that mess.

Rue, yeah, I think this is the correct response. We're not going to be able to block posts that don't follow this experiment in communication and try to disrupt it, so we will have to ignore them, or ask them to edit their post to meet the standards of communication, that we can then get communicate, and not waste each other's time, even if we happen to disagree.

So, rue is right, re kirkule's post, I concur.
