Hidden Audio: Obama Tells SF Chronicle He Will Bankrupt Coal Industry
By P.J. Gladnick (Bio | Archive)
November 2, 2008 - 07:26 ET

(Please read update about the San Francisco Chronicle neglecting to mention Obama's willingness to bankrupt the coal industry at bottom of this blog.)

Imagine if John McCain had whispered somewhere that he was willing to bankrupt a major industry? Would this declaration not immediately be front page news? Well, Barack Obama actually flat out told the San Francisco Chronicle (SF Gate) that he was willing to see the coal industry go bankrupt in a January 17, 2008 interview. The result? Nothing. This audio interview has been hidden from the public...until now. Here is the transcript of Obama's statement about bankrupting the coal industry (emphasis mine):

Let me sort of describe my overall policy.

What I've said is that we would put a cap and trade system in place that is as aggressive, if not more aggressive, than anybody else's out there.

I was the first to call for a 100% auction on the cap and trade system, which means that every unit of carbon or greenhouse gases emitted would be charged to the polluter. That will create a market in which whatever technologies are out there that are being presented, whatever power plants that are being built, that they would have to meet the rigors of that market and the ratcheted down caps that are being placed, imposed every year.

So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can; it's just that it will bankrupt them because they're going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that's being emitted.

That will also generate billions of dollars that we can invest in solar, wind, biodiesel and other alternative energy approaches.

The only thing I've said with respect to coal, I haven't been some coal booster. What I have said is that for us to take coal off the table as a (sic) ideological matter as opposed to saying if technology allows us to use coal in a clean way, we should pursue it.

So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can.
It's just that it will bankrupt them.

Amazing that this statement by Obama about bankrupting the coal industry has been kept under wraps until this time.

UPDATE: NewsBusters' Tom Blumer has found out that the San Francisco Chronicle story published on January 18 based upon this January 17 interview did not include any mention of Obama's willingness to bankrupt the coal industry which you can hear on the audio. You can read the story here when you scroll down to the "In His Own Words" section. Way to cover up for The One, SF Chronicle!

this article is from drudgereport.com and when you press the link of the story it will have this article and a youtube video. I also want to say that i live in a state where coal is VERY important and that without out it than the entire state would go bankrupt. What Obama says in this article just reaffirms my position for who i am going to vote for and i hope that this gets out to the point that if it does that Obama will lose alot of states that are supporting him. I find the commits he made appalling due to the fact that if he gets ellected he would put us in a depression due to the fact that it would cause unemployment to SKYROCKET and it would send jobs and money overseas that the US needs right now. We use coal to heat our homes and provide steel and electicity more than anything else . He would desrtoy america so he can get something that is decades away while this country destroys itself.

There is no such thing as "clean coal" technology. It is dirty dangerous work. It destroys landscapes, causes lung and other cancers and helps cause global warming.

Coal miners can work in other energy industries. He is not saying that his desire is to bankrupt, his goal is that we take it off the table. The legislation would bankrupt it. Not Senator Obama.

and who is putting forth the legislation and without coal the us would not have energy because the energy he wants wont be ready for decades also not everybody can magically move to where those jobs are. Also you say it destroys the landskape it did when it first started out but i live in a town where coal mining was done and seen other places where it was done and the landscape is quit beautifull because of the beautification they have to do after they mine.

Not ready for decades? Bullshit. As for beautifications - thats lovely, what about the cancer, the lung problems, the cave ins. Coal is the past.

We need clean, renewable, safer sources.

You say "the energy he wants won't be ready for decades", yet that's misleading. The technology is there already, and has been for quite some time. That there hasn't been a bigger move towards clean energy isn't the fault of clean energy; it's the fault of, among others, Big Coal, Big Oil, and to some extent the Bush Administration. They've made it HARDER to invest in alternative energies and easier to keep shoveling cheap coal. The industries have had plenty of time to move in cleaner directions, but they don't want to. Sometimes you have to give 'em a shove to do what's in their best interests for the long term.

Are you on drugs? There were front-page news stories all over the country in the last year because of cave-ins in which people were trapped, buried alive, and killed! And the owner of one of those mines is one of Bush's administration insiders!

Goose5068 - respectfully, I don't believe this remark was made to signify "bankrupt coal" as in tomorrow pull the plug. I think he is talking in terms of ideals for the future of energy for the US. His choice of words - as with "spread the wealth" - was not the best (I think he was trying to sound tough to a liberal newspaper).

As you know all too well, coal is a limited resource. It has a finite viability as an energy source for this country, better we find alternatives before we just run out. And best we do it with some kind of a transition plan for the people in the industry - this takes time. If opening new plants is less feasible dollar-wise itmotivates the industry to start the process of looking elsewhere.

You would know this a lot better than me, but I've not heard a single coal miner say they want their children to follow them into the mines. If you have kids and they could make a similar wage above ground, would you prefer that?

We've basically ditched coal in the UK and we're much better off as a result. It's a nasty, polluting, dangerous form of fuel and we're better off leaving it in the ground.

Hopefully though you'll have learned a lesson from our experience and will find ways of rejuvenating former mining towns.

this is just some facts. According to the West Virginia Office of Miners' Health, Safety and Training, the coal industry provides about 40,000 direct jobs in the state, including those for miners, mine contractors, coal preparation plant employees and mine supply company workers.

West Virginia is the second largest coal-producing state in the country behind Wyoming and accounts for about 15 percent of all coal production in the United States. The Mountain State leads the nation in underground coal production and leads the nation in coal exports with over 50 million tons shipped to 23 countries. West Virginia accounts for about half of U.S. coal exports.

In addition, the coal industry pays about $70 million in property taxes in the state annually, and the Coal Severance Tax adds about $214 million into West Virginia's economy. The coal industry payroll in the state is nearly $2 billion per year, and coal is responsible for more than $3.5 billion annually in the gross state product.

Now with the already high unemployment numbers this would just add to them plus where are you going to get new jobs to replace them in addition where are you going to replace all the trillions the US will lose. I live in West Virginia and can tell you first hand that if coal and steel go to foreign countries than this state and others will go and most of you power with it.

Coal is THE number one source of mercury pollution - and children living downwind of coal-fired power plants have higher levels of autism.

Coal is not only deep-mined (an extremely dangerous and health-destroying occupation) - it's also extracted through 'mountaintop removal', an extensive and extremely damaging coal mining method.

You cannot 'remove' the greenhouse gases generated by burning coal.

Coal burning also generates the pollution (NOx an SOx) that causes acid rain which kills trees and lakes.

Coal fired power plants in China generate so much pollution it's affecting the US - do we want to follow their example or would we like to lead the world in clean energy technology ?

The NAS and other leading scientific bodies have determined the technology already exists to combat global warming.

do not destroy the buisness unless the other technology which is not and can they replace the jobs with those jobs right now so no do not destroy the economy unless you can reaplce the jobs that you are tacking away unless you can replace them which you can not right now. I lie in a town where before i was born and the mill was firing on all cylinders the town was palluted but with the filters they have on the stacks now there is virtually no polution.

I honestly don't know how people get the idea that just b/c my daddy and his daddy before him used to work in the ... mine, steel mill, auto plant, lumber business, fishing industry ... I have a right to it, too.

Sooner of later, things come to an end. And what do you do when the fish are all gone, the lumber is all cut, the coal is all mined ?

I come from Buffalo. I know what the loss of an industry - or many industries - does to an area. But the answer is not to look back and try to live off the dregs until those too are gone. You need to look forward.

All i am saying is too have something in place before you destroy a buisness. The town i have is dying because the mill is going down hill because off all the imported steel being brought into this country. The town i live in back in the day used to be mined but has not been in a long time but the beautification process has been very good. The southern part of WV want to change but you can't because there is nothing else to replace it. So i say again have something to replace it before you take the buisness that is already there away.

“That is why Marxism represents a further vital and creative stage in the maturing of man's universal vision. Marxism is simultaneously a victory of the external, active man over the inner, passive man and a victory of reason over belief: it stresses man's capacity to shape his material destiny – finite and defined as man's only reality – and it postulates the absolute capacity of man to truly understand his reality as a point of departure for his active endeavors to shape it. To a greater extent than any previous mode of political thinking, Marxism puts a premium on the systematic and rigorous examination of material reality and on guides to action derived from that examination.”

The business will be replaced. Coal will be replaced by solar and wind. But that doesn't seem to be what you're looking for. What you want is for someone to come in a rescue your area.

That's a completely different idea.

well build the building before you take away the buisness i do not whant someone to come in and rescue the area. It would be nice but if you want to take a buisness away build the buildings that are going to replace the buisness and get it started before making the buisness disapear becasue if you look ot one of my post West Virginia accounts for about half of U.S. coal exports. Do not destro a states buisness unless the technology you are going to replace it is ready and is put inplace in the state before dicontinuing the buisness. What Obama wants to do is destroy the buisness and not replace it untill years later when the technology is finally put in place. If you have ever been in West Virginia you would understand.

Oh yeah, we're in the best economic times ever. No deficit. Plenty of jobs to go around and everyone is able to afford a home. Good Times!

We seem to be headed in that direction right now, No Thanks indeed! Bush and Company have managed to drive this country right into the pooper. "Change" has taken place already my friend, just take a look around.

The NeoCons have had a field day at our expense and your worried that someone other than a bible-thumping republican will have the answer. A bunch of greedy bastards destroyed this country and managed to squeeze us for the last nickel and you say that Obama will turn it into a 3rd world backwater.
Hmmmmm, racist much!
