I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Why can't we just do hand-counted paper ballots?????
Quote:

At least three early voters in Jackson County had a hard time voting for candidates they want to win. Virginia Matheney and Calvin Thomas said touch-screen machines in the county clerk's office in Ripley kept switching their votes from Democratic to Republican candidates.

"When I touched the screen for Barack Obama, the check mark moved from his box to the box indicating a vote for John McCain," said Matheney, who lives in Kenna.

Calvin Thomas, 81, who retired from Kaiser Aluminum in Ravenswood in 1983 and now lives in Ripley, experienced the same problem.

"When I pushed Obama, it jumped to McCain. When I went down to governor's office and punched [Gov. Joe] Manchin, it went to the other dude. When I went to Karen Facemyer [the incumbent Republican state senator], I pushed the Democrat, but it jumped again. The rest of them were OK, but the machine sent my votes for those top three offices from the Democrat to the Republican"

A poll worker directed me to a touch screen voting machine & instructed me how to use it. I touched “Obama” for president & nothing lit up. I touched 2 or 3 more times & still nothing lit up. I called the poll worker back over to tell him I was having a problem. He said I just needed to touch it more lightly. I tried it 2 or 3 more times more lightly with the poll worker watching & still nothing lit up. The poll worker then touched it for me twice — nothing lit up. The third time he touched the Obama button, the Cynthia McKinney space lit up! The McKinney button was located five rows below the Obama button. The poll worker just kind of laughed and cancelled the vote. He hit the Obama button again & it finally lit up. I continued on to cast the rest of my votes. After completing the process & reviewing my votes, I went to the VOTE page, hit the VOTE button & nothing happened. Again after several tries, I called the poll worker over & he finally got the machine to register my votes.

And that's NOTHING to how the tallying machines can be hacked!

Well Signy, believe it or not, but there are still places that use the paper ballot - like here in this little corner of the planet, where the grass is always green and the flowers in full bloom - the air is clean and the water is sparkling... the people are all friendly and have an honest concern for their fellow man - and the bullshit runs deep.....

no really, i do live in a rural area and vote in our little community center every chance i get, and the ballots are marked by hand and counted in the county courthouse.

But i digress...

You may have seen this, but here is an interview of Robert Kennedy, Jr. by Rachel Maddow about this problem.

Alas, even paper ballots aren't a whole solution when you've got folks like Butch and Hoppy and their little bottle of solvent on the job...

I hate to quibble, Sig, but I don't think we ALL agree that vote-flipping is bad. Hero, 'Rappy, Finn, and Riverlove probably LOVE a "fair and balanced" system that automatically registers an Obama vote as a McCain vote, and a McCain vote as a McCain vote. It's just the machine's way of telling you that you're mistaken, and it knows what is best for you.

What could be wrong with that?

I don't know much about vote flipping, but I do know that if you don't flip your burger then it does not cook properly. As Americans I'm sure we can all agree that a properly prepared burger is as important as a properly cast ballot.

I'm in favor of burger flipping and frankly I'm offended by this un-American commie-socialist ACORN nonsensical attitude that somehow flipping is wrong.

I also like my burgers with bacon, American cheese, mayo, lettuce, tomato, and onions. I like my votes plain. Both go good with a side of onion rings.

I don't like your "automatically registers" idea. I'd hate to think of some machine coming in a taking a poor fella's job or worse...outsourcing our election fraud to India. So, to answer your question...I'm against this "automatically" business.

On a side note, I'm investigating some election fraud violence. Funny story, can't tell you, but very funny.

Just remember...if your burger goes unflipped, the terrorists win.

It would take longer and it's no less vulnerable to fraud or error. Folks have been getting around paper ballots for hundreds of years. In Texas in the '60s and '70s, all the Hispanic voters mysteriously voted in Anglo officials rather than their own candidates, until some folks got so disgusted by the fraud they stopped it.

You're not going to prevent voter fraud by using any particular method of recording votes. Only vigilance by ethical people will control it.

Yeah, but how to DO it without an Athens style boot-up-ass-a-thon, cause that can get very out of hand, really quick like.

I've had a few go rounds with corrupt smalltown politics where everyone from the county seat on down to the court clerks is part of the game, and there was really no *legal* way to go about it since no one further up the chain seemed to have the authority or jurisdiction to handle the matter.

For all that I've been quick to resort to violence when I felt it was warranted, especially in my youth, there's got to be other options to solve that kinda problem, and if there ain't perhaps we should get to makin some.

A better oversight process would be a damn good start, and a very wise choice would be to consult Bev Harris about it, cause she's done a helluva lot of homework on the subject.

PS. Small town politics and violence is a pretty damn tiresome thing, being a direct descendant of the friggin Hatfield clan, one can imagine that me and mine are damned sick of it by now, yes ?
