Believe me, comparing myself favourably to the witless self important morons, who immediately begin shouting insults the moment someone disagrees with them because they're incapable of accepting other view points or even forming a logical argument, is neither 'putting them down' nor building myself up. If anything it's relatively a compliment.

Oh I see. So by saying this :

Relatively speaking, yes. I mean if I was truthful about some of the posters here, I'd have to be much more eviscerating.

I mean, you really do have to doubt the intellect of someone who's very best shot is "I'm rubber, you're glue":

Friend Citizen...your last 2 posts have really exposed some basic truths about the RWED. What the fuck are any of us doing in here? We each only preach to our own choirs. We don't convince or convert anyone. We all just like to shoot our holes off, because we can. This place is like a bad experiment in mental masterbation.

Or at least fix the problems in your own glass house before you think to toss your comments at American problems.

Actually I'm yanking your chain as much as anything, but really you started it, so there. I'm fairly confident that, whatever my faults, not listening to people I disagree with certainly isn't one of them.

Having said that though, when a citizen of the currently only Imperial super power with the biggest gap between rich and poor, lowest social mobility, and amongst the lowest scores in social freedoms among developed nations, who just started a thread titled "Britain Sucks" says:

Clarify something for me:

Who was it that started this thread entitled "Britain Sucks"?

So have you fixed all the problems in your own country before tossing off comments about British problems?

Hypocrite much?

Mikey, I don't think Wulf is malicious, just inexperienced, and still struggling against a not fully shedded set of the misperceptions foisted upon us all by mass media and the public education system.

But credit where credit is due, how many folk actually try to smash the way out of their own plastic bubbles, to reach ugly truths it's so much easier to ignore, deny and insulate ones self from ?

And yes, he comes off rather badly, makes an ass of himself a bit here and there, and catches some chops busting for it, not all of which is undeserved - but you and I are assholes too you know.

Seriously, he does have a point about Britain becoming such a surveillance state, and the whole somewhat ridiculous fear and banning of anything that could concievably be used as a weapon.

That IS, to the point it's gone, is going, more than a bit disturbing, and in a distant sort of way offensive to the american spirit, sure.

But they AIN'T americans, they are a different culture underneath all the surface similarities, and at *this* point in time their Gov't has a somewhat more effective set of checks and balances than ours does - especially in the immediate wake of the abysmal failures of our own.

I wouldn't say they "suck" though, just that they are making some bitter mistakes that history shows will bite them on the ass, just like Chavez is making quite a few of his own by not giving thought to the fact that whoever comes after him is likely going to abuse the excess powers he has usurped to improve the lot of his country and it's people.

Americans in particular are notorious for the mistake of not understanding the actions of other folk in their own country's cultural context, and this does seem to work both ways as most folk from other countries think of us as insane for actually preferring to risk violence and danger in exchange for a greater portion of such rarely used freedoms.

Citizen has concerns about a bunch of cowboy maniacs so closely culturally, politically and economically tied to his own country, and probably more than a few concerns about his own Gov't but to his mind that's more his business than ours.

Some of us have concerns about a bunch of nanny state wanna-be socialists so closely culturally, politically and economically tied to our own country, and probably more than a few concerns about our own Gov't to our mind more our business than his.

But frankly, we got one stinkin planet in all the universe right now, and all of us live on it - long as others live the way THEY want and don't come over here shoving it on us, we can sneer it at from a nice vague distance without undue concern.

It's when somebody goes into the land of another and tries to force their way of life onto another people that EVERYONE has cause for concern, and to be brutally honest right now two countries on this stupid little mudball are the worst for it, and the other one is just a technical bully kicking a weaker country no one seems to really give a shit about...

So yeah, for us to bitch about the way other folk in some other country live their lives and run their governments is a bit out of sorts, especially while trying to shove the american way down the throats of two other countries on a bayonet.

In the context of that, running down someone else's culture while standing in the country doing that shoving - dude, that's like wandering around a redneck variant of oktoberfest wearing a kick me sign, the results are a foregone conclusion.

I have concerns too, but the problem of ridiculous levels (in the opintion of an american) of surveillance and weapon laws in Britain... fuck, man... that's for the BRITISH to solve, don't we got enough problems here ?

I say we focus our efforts HERE and show folks WHY it's such a terrible idea and do the american thing... I don't mean the usual american hypocrisy of saying one thing and doin something else neither, I mean the american SPIRIT, the thing that encouraged the French to build the statue of liberty and send it to us.

I say we smash that shit flat HERE, and set a goddamn EXAMPLE, and then instead of levelling insult and bein patronising, offer the hand to help folk lift THEMSELVES from the crapstorm, just like we did.

And there's never been a better time than now, when the torn and tattered mask of this oppression machine has worn thin and all of it's own forces and resources are so busy working it's will in other nations, fighting each other for turf or playing games in the media that any move against US will be slow in coming and weak when it does.

I know you mean well in spite of the shit you catch for it Wulf, but right now, we got a chance to do this the right way, by doing the typically american thing and putting a boot up the ass of the politicians, lobbyists, CEOs and such that got us into such a disastrous mess in the first place.

And then by using our can-do spirit and ingenuity to fix this damn train wreck and get that shit back on the rails and running on time.

And while we're at it, put those fucking twin towers back up, NOW, curse it, taller and stronger with a fucking flagpole on top of each one topped by an eagle screaming defiance and mockery to those that think they can scare or hurt us that way.

And we CAN do that, it's what makes us....

Americans.

-Frem

PS. Never for a moment forget that I do love my country and it's ideals, whether we have always carried them successfully or not - it's what drives me to kick ass and drag us to what we could be, what we SHOULD be, rather than what we have fallen to.

Britain's biggest problem is that it's STILL trying to conform to the US model. It's become the love child Maggie and Ronnie never had. Britain would have been better off if the two had just gotten room and fucked each other instead of the country.

So instead of taking the time to title this thread with something witty and well thought out which in effct says "Hey guys, look how bad its gotten in Britain, we need to watch out so that this kind of stuff doesnt happen here..." I just throw up "Britain Sucks"

Same goes with my posts. I kind of have to "shoot-from-the-hip".

Also, to those that doubt this monitoring stuff isn't getting worse over here....

Drivers could have speed limited by satellite devices

London Daily Telegraph
15/09/2008

Drivers could have their speed controlled by satellite to stop them from breaking the limit following a Government trial of new technology.

Cars fitted with the system would have their speed automatically monitored by satellites, which would also be programmed with the speed limits for different roads.

A motorist who tried to accelerate beyond the speed limit would find the system stopping the car from going any faster or issuing a warning instructing them to slow down.

The Department for Transport is set to back the system known as Intelligent Speed Adaptation. It follows lengthy trials conducted in Leeds in where cars have been fitted with the sophisticated satellite navigation system.

The Department for Transport said that the installation of the technology would be voluntary, but it is already in talks with the motor industry over how it could be made available for those who wanted to buy it.

Three types of the technology could be made available.

The first, known as "advisory", would stop short of actually slowing the car down and would instead issue a voice alert reminding the motorist what the speed limit is.

A second version would either apply the brakes or cut the fuel supply to the engine, slowing it down to the speed limit, but a driver would be able to override the system – either by depressing the accelerator pedal firmly or pressing a button.

The third would take over complete control of the car and the driver would not be able to override the system at all.

In related news, the Military Industrial Space Complex plans to lobotomize all humans with Mind Control Helmets. FOR REAL:

Quote:

Soldiers barking orders at each other is so 20th Century. That’s why the U.S. Army has just awarded a $4 million contract to begin developing “thought helmets” that would harness silent brain waves for secure communication among troops. Ultimately, the Army hopes the project will “lead to direct mental control of military systems by thought alone.”

If this sounds insane, it would have been as recently as a few years ago. But improvements in computing power and a better understanding of how the brain works have scientists busy hunting for the distinctive neural fingerprints that flash through a brain when a person is talking to himself. The Army's initial goal is to capture those brain waves with incredibly sophisticated software that then translates the waves into audible radio messages for other troops in the field.

“It’d be radio without a microphone, ” says Dr. Elmar Schmeisser, the Army neuroscientist overseeing the program. “Because soldiers are already trained to talk in clean, clear and formulaic ways, it would be a very small step to have them think that way.”

Yet it’s not as far-fetched as you might think: video gamers are eagerly awaiting a crude commercial version of brain wave technology - a $299 headset from San Francisco-based Emotiv Systems - in summer 2009.

Ah, but technology is a sword with TWO edges, my friend...

For every new way to pry into our lives cooked up by the tame hacks of the Feddies, there's already three or more to bollocks up the works cooked up by folks like me.

We've recently discovered a countermeasure to cell phone location tracking, although it has a limited range.

And our newest little toy is a plug in unit that overrides and scrambles all the data to your cars black boxes - all you gotta do is plug it and leave it there, as a plus it's removable if you wanna pull diagnostics on something.

One of the funniest things we did, was upon discovery of the transmission frequency of the camera the local cops were using to monitor an intersection, we ran a patch from the local cable companies porn channel to a second transmitter wired right into the cameras power line.

Even funnier is that the local cops didn't report that shit for MONTHS.

Yeah, and it's driven by worthless lying abominations like The Daily Mail, which was the basis for this thread I believe. It's an irony that seems to pass most people by, but the Daily Mail and other tabloids decry nutty government measures (most of which are either blown out of all proportion or simply lies), then on the next page they'll blow out of all proportion crime figures and call for all knives to be banned and tougher sentencing on 'louts'.

Point is if you want to know the real state of affairs in America, don't watch Foxnews. If you want to know what's really going on in Britain, steer clear of The Daily Mail for pity sake.

I think American's often look at things in terms of Ideology rather than pragmatism. It's expressed in the often called 'can do' attitude, but it's also expressed in the tacit belief that Iraqi's will be greeting American soldiers as liberators...

You're partly right. Though if you were all right you'd still be part wrong. The actions of my Government don't have half the effects on your country as the actions of yours has on mine. Simply put I have a lot more invested in your Government than you do in mine.

However, I'd actually like to discuss British politics here, but the chances are slim to none. The vast majority of posters round here really don't give a shit, and if they do it's only to say "Britain Sucks". If I want to discuss politics in anyway shape or form it has to be American, because 90% of the posters here couldn't give a shit about anything else, if indeed they even realise there's a world the other side of the US border.

At any rate my countries interests are best served by strong international relations and alliances, they're served by a strong rule of international law and an open and trusted forum for the non-violent airing of international grievances in the shape of the UN. My countries best interests would be served by a strong, confident, pluralistic and democratic United States, with a commitment to international law and Western Enlightenment principles. All those things have been massively undermined by the current flavour of Republican politics, and the current US Administration in particular. Of course I'm going to take an interest, and you know what since your fuck ups are affecting me in a very real way, I have a fucking right too.

Just as a side note, i could easily have replied similarly to Citizen. Because the way you broached this subject was a little... tactless, shall we say?
But i find removing my own opinion from the point and just stating and sharing facts is a lot easier to have people engage with.

However, if you want me to bring my opinions to the table i'm sure we'd be having an entirely different style of conversation.

Tactless? Maybe.

Sometimes the only way to get people to listen is AFTER you've punched them in the face...IMHO, of course.

And although i haven't been here long, i would hazzard a guess that the folks here don't need a punch in the face to grasp an opinion that is displayed in an intelligent, non-agressive manner.

I may be wrong.

Wendy and others - I'd actually be quite interested in knowing what my underground resistance types are up to across the pond, to be honest.

I know better than to trust anything the Beeb or the Mail says, and Indymedia tends to be sparse on the details sometimes - I do recall less than fondly that the authorities jacked their servers a while back, too.
http://www.commondreams.org/headlines04/1010-25.htm

So yeah, I'd be quite interested in hearing about it from folks "on the ground" as it were, if you care to expound at length - I doubt you'll bore me, and I might even be able to offer some advice on where to stick the knife and how to twist it, yes ?

"And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Again, thou shalt say to the children of Israel, Whosoever he be of the children of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn in Israel, that giveth any of his seed unto Molech; he shall surely be put to death: the people of the land shall stone him with stones. House sales fall to lowest level in 50 years

Earlier this week, property website Rightmove said house prices had continued their downward spiral with the average asking price dropping 1 per cent to £227,438 ($500,000) during the five weeks to September 13.

Further falls in house prices are widely expected, with some predicting that the average home will be worth just £140,000 ($280,000) within the next 18 months.

I bought my first house in England for $32,000, which was about 35,000 quids. Sold it 3 years later for $65,000/quids. So the price of houses could drop back to those numbers from the 80s and 90s.
