I hadn't heard this, I won't vote for that,...if I snuck into Mexico, I'd be in jail, not working and living good. Why don't they get treated like their country would treat us. I know the answer, "cheap labor"

what a crock!

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

Is it really so wrong to ask that children should learn more than one language? Does saying that we need to learn to speak the language of the fastest-growing segment of our population automatically equate to capitulation and surrender of border security?

If you lived near Montreal, would you find it helpful to learn French? If you lived in Belgium, would you speak ONLY French, or ONLY German? If so, you'd be handicapped, since both are spoken there pretty frequently.

My father spoke German fluently, pretty much from birth, because that was the prevalent language of his hometown in Nebraska. His parents spoke English, of course, but his grandmother would flow from English into German during her everyday conversations.

For generations, we've DEMANDED that the rest of the world speak English. Is it wrong to SUGGEST that maybe, just maybe, it might be helpful to us to learn some Spanish? There's a very large portion of the world's population that already speaks it, and they're going to have a sizable advantage in negotiations and everyday dealings if we don't speak the language.

I guess suggesting that the intelligence services and armed services need more Arabic speakers is the same as saying that we're planning to surrender to Al Qaeda, too, right?

Funny thing is, when you go to Mexico, most of the people you deal with will at least TRY to speak English. It just makes financial sense for them to be able to speak the language of the people who are spending money in their country.

I dont' have a problem with people learning two languages. I was always wishing I knew Spanish and Chinese. The truth is, your kid is going to go far if he knew those three languages.

What I'm worried about is kids getting together and mixing languages with slang. Imagine not knowing what the hell your kids are talking about because they're always talking and texting in a half foreign language mixed with a double dose of slang.

They're plotting your demise. You can go watch the old Logan's Run again or wait till the remake comes out next year. This is how it happens

But how many, and which ones?

Here in the DC area we got Korean, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Cantonese, Japanese, Urdu, Farsi, and Pashtan. We got various African, Asian, South and Central American indigenious languages. We got several Eastern European languages. All in addition to the ones you might learn in school; Spanish, German, Italian, French, etc. Depending on where you live, some will be more prevalent, but all may be heard. Around me it's mostly Asian languages, with various South American indigenous thrown in.

That's funny. My wife and I both spoke a little Spanish- when our kids were little, we would speak of things the kids weren't supposed to understand, in Espanol. Worked better than pig Latin or any of the other dodges folks use.

That's the rub - if I'd known I'd be living most of my life in Texas, I'd've spent more time early on learning Spanish, or even Tex-Mex. Spanish will get you quite far in this hemisphere. If you know English and Spanish, pretty much all of North and South America are opened up to you in a much broader way. If you throw in Portuguese as well, and even larger area (Brazil) is now yours for the asking...

Silly me, I went for German. Now THERE's a language you can use every day... and it's like math: if you don't use it, you lose it.

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

Can't believe I'm responding to a tabloid thread, but seriously is anyone listening to what the man says?
"I agree that immigrants should learn English... They'll learn English... You should be thinking about how your child can become bilingual. Every child should be bilingual."
And he gives French as an example as well as Spanish.
The only thing I'd say he's wrong on is that not every European can speak more than one language. I talk to quite a few, actually, who can't. Many with a native language other than English can also speak English, but those whose native language is English? I think less than ten percent of them are fluent in another language. Not that it's scientific, it's just my experience. Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of good reasons for it. English kicks ass as a language in general, and since it's still (for the moment) the language of big business, most people need to know it more than anything. (As China grows in prominence, I think Chinese will become just as important to know in terms of doing business.) However, exploring another culture and hence another language is not going to be a damaging experience to anyone. I studied Spanish for years, though I'm still not fluent and in fact barely passable at speaking it. Why? Because I didn't start learning it until I was in my teens. If I could have learned at a younger age, I would have held on to more of it. But the only way I would have been able to become fluent with the system set up the way it is would have been by living in a Spanish-speaking country. Which, for the record, I have no desire to do. So I think having the option of Spanish classes for younger children is not a horrible idea, if only to open up some doors for them in terms of thinking about language in general, how things fit together, and maybe some cross-culture exchange.
That said, I also agree that immigrants should learn English. If I did move somewhere with a different native language, I certainly wouldn't be so selfish as to expect everyone there to speak my language, I would be making an effort to speak theirs. It's courtesy and it's common sense.

You may say I'm a dreamer. But I'm not the only one.

Rose: I'm with ya. That's what I was trying to point out. Why is it that Obama saying our children would be better off by learning a second or third language is now a BAD THING? Why is it spun so that it's made to sound like he's throwing the gates wide open and handing over the keys to the country to illegal immigrants? Are there actually people who believe that our children should learn LESS, should be LESS educated, should know LESS about the world they live in and its people?

I get non-English characters like ñ from the character map. In Windows, go to Start Menu, then All Programs, Accessories, and it's under System Tools. (I don't know where to find it on a Mac.) I need these characters so frequently that I now have a short cut on my desktop to the character map. I hope this helps!

US towns declare Spanish to be the only language allowed spoken in government buildings, and Mexican flag to be the official flag

El Cenizo, a Texas border town has adopted Spanish as the official language. Not only has this U.S. town taken away our national common language, the English language, the community has declared itself as a safe haven for illegal immigrants.

The Mayor of El Cenizo, Rafael Rodriguez stated that the majority of residents of his town only speak Spanish, including himself! The distinguished Mayor also is a former trespasser of sovereignty. In 1995, Rodriguez entered America illegally. Mayor Rafael Rodriguez told Reuters that he and most of the town’s residents only speak Spanish. The City Council voted last week to make Spanish, not English, the town’s official language. That means town business will be conducted in Spanish, which then documents will be translated into English for so they can comply with Texas law.

Rodriguez said, “The City Council’s intent was not to usurp English or create divisions, but to make local government more accessible to the town’s residents.”

The Mayor of El Cenizo told Reuters, [What we are looking for is that the people of the community who attend the meetings and who only speak Spanish be able to voice their opinions, the safe haven ordinance forbids city staff, which consists of one employee and two volunteers, from helping the U.S. Border Patrol find illegal immigrants or inquiring about any person's immigration status.

Might wanna check yer facts, there, pardner. Spanish isn't the ONLY language the town's business is done in. "City" business is done in English AND Spanish - there go those evil bilingual folk again!

And it should be noted that, according to US Census Bureau figures, the "city" (a city of fewer than 3500 residents) is 98.9% Hispanic/Latino in its makeup, and has a white population of 0.28%.

And it's situated about 0.5 miles on this side of the border with Mexico.
