Quote:

The last major remnant of Saddam Hussein's nuclear program -- a huge stockpile of concentrated natural uranium -- reached a Canadian port Saturday, completing a secret U.S. operation that included a two-week airlift from Baghdad and a long ship voyage.

The removal of more than 600 tons of yellowcake, the seed material for higher-grade nuclear enrichment, was a significant step toward closing the books on Hussein's nuclear legacy. It also relieved U.S. and Iraqi concerns that the cache would reach insurgents or smugglers crossing to Iran to aid its nuclear ambitions.

I think I'll wait for confirmation from a source that didn't try to sell me the Kuwaiti Incubator Story, Niger Yellowcake, Ahmed Chalabi, Mobile Bioweapon Labs, Jessica Lynch and other flim flam faery tales.

Until IAEA confirms it, or SOME at least potentially reputable source, imma treat it just like the bullshit stories listed above.

I'm not sure whether that's accurate, but if it is, I"m not sure what it means...

why that is supposed to contradict the accepted reality, accepted even by the very administration that insisted Iraq had weapons of mass destruction, but by their own admission now, say they did not, is lost on me. If real, this clearly is not the smoking gun that would allow the Bush administration to tout their wisdom in the initial invasion, or else, guess what dude...

they would be, every day...and the news media would cover it if they were saying it, as they always have.

Clearly something doesn't add up to what you want it to add up to here.

The IAEA knew about the yellowcake before we invaded. It was under IAEA seal, but was not considered a serious problem because yellowcake cannot be directly enriched. It's not a big story.

Double check the underlying facts before you jump to conclusions.

You people just don't understand the significance of this report.

CANADA now has yellowcake. They're obviously just a few steps away from becoming a nuclear power; eager to replace North Korea as an Axis of Evil. We should immediately withdraw our forces from Iraq and Afghanistan and start preparing for the invasion.

I know even you aren't quite that naiive, 'Rap. Show me one single instance of anyone here claiming that Saddam never once had any yellowcake at all. What IS in dispute is that he was trying to get MORE yellowcake from Niger in the days leading up to the US invasion of Iraq, as Bush claimed he was.

It's not out of the realm of possibility that Saddam had a supply of yellowcake which he'd bought years before (remember, he DID have a nuclear reactor once upon a time, right? Seems the Israelis caused it to "malfunction" somehow...).

Also, can someone please point me to where it's been confirmed that the only possible use of yellowcake is for weapons-grade enriched uranium? I know Geezer was only joking about Canada, but you really should stop to think about it - if yellowcake is only useful for nuclear weapons programs, what the fuck is CANADA doing with it?!

Thanks for that answer. Apparently, YOU don't know, either. But that won't stop you from shouting from the rooftops that this "proves" that Saddam had WMD...

Guess what? There's radiation in damn near EVERYTHING in the universe. Nuclear weapons take very specific kinds of uranium and plutonium, and I was asking if there was any GOOD evidence that yellowcake is ONLY useful for that purpose. As usual, you've got no good answer. But I'm used to that.

Now, quickly change the subject and accuse anyone who doesn't agree with you of "hating America", because that one just NEVER gets old!

Or Great Britain? Or France? Or Pakistan, India, Israel, South Africa, any number of former Soviet states, Canada, Japan, BOTH Koreas... They all have nuclear programs of one sort or another, and no doubt have SOME use for uranium - how can you be SURE that they don't have weapons programs centered around that nuclear material?

In fact, MOST of those listed above do indeed have nuclear weapons. Why haven't we invaded Pakistan? They're a Muslim nation, run by a dictator, known to be harboring terrorists (including Bin Laden himself, according to most sources - or what you'd call a "slam dunk") - why have we not invaded them, or at the very least nuked them?

And to our shame, that seems to be the mindset of the US government these days. By invading Iraq for *supposedly* having WMD (because if there's one thing we can absolutely be SURE of, it's that it wasn't about oil, right?), and by NOT invading North Korea when they announced that they had detonated a nuclear device (a nuclear "fizzle"?), we seemed to send a clear message - one that we're reinforcing now with our sabre-rattling stance on Iran. That message is this:

"If you are trying to acquire nuclear weapons, we'll invade your ass. If you already HAVE them, we'll talk."

Now, given that that's the message the rest of the world in hearing, by our words and actions, it's easy to see WHY they'd want to hurry up and get their nukes, and do it on the downlow, so they can announce that they have them before we can invade!

We haven't stopped proliferation, we haven't postponed it or slowed it down. If anything, we've accelerated it by our current stance on the issue.

The Iranian situation is a perfect example of UN & European ineptitude in dealing with aggressors. All you Bush haters...hey...you can't blame America for this one...right? Well, you probably do anyhow, since that's your entire raison d'etre. It's been over 2 years of IAEA & European oversight and demands. All that has been returned from Iran is a big middle finger pointed straight up back at them. Can't wait to see the first city nuked by Iran...we have a betting pool in the office. If it's your city, or your friend's city, don't come-a-cryin' to Bush & Cheney. They've played this one by the book.

I get the distinct impression that Bushie has a wheel set up in the Oval Office, which he spins to get the excuse of the day for why we invaded Iraq in the first place, and then the Administration sends that excuse du jour out to all the little Bushites like 'Rappy in their morning "talking points" memo.

"Okay, today the reason was WMD."

"It was never WMD - it was about spreading democracy!"

"It was to free the Kurds!"

"No, it was about the Oil-for-Food scandal, and we had to make sure that no one was profiteering off Iraq except AMERICAN companies!"

"It's about fighting them here and there!"

"It's about Iran, and it always was. Anything else would just be foolish."

"Don't ask us - it was Congress's idea in the first place, and we never even wanted to do it."

"We had to, because the UN is useless. And if they try to stop us, we'll use our veto power to show them how powerful we are."

"Ooooh, look - that guy's burning a flag!! Kill him! KILL HIM!!!"

"Saddam was killing his own people - and only WE get to kill his own people, dammit!"

"Daddy tol' me to..."

"Because George Tenet is evil, and tricked me into it."

"Becuase we know Osama is in Pakistan, so we have to invade Iraq."

"I don't know what you're talking about. Iraq? Never heard of it. I don't recall."

"Because we don't torture."

"Because gays shouldn't marry."

"Because I support the troops, just as long as we don't try to give them benefits, health care, or any actual SUPPORT."

"It's un-American to even ask why."

This is why the founding fathers didnt want us to mess in the affairs of other lands.

Why can't we stop being the worlds policemen?

Too many times, those in charge believe they "know whats best for all".

That happens here all the time.

They are ALWAYS wrong.

Until we start taking care of business at home (i.e. restoring our freedoms, cutting back on the powers of the government and the state, stop giving our money to foreign lands ect ect " we can't lead the world.

And by the lead the world, I mean by example.

You cannot be that obtuse, or so helplessly in denial NOT to know that Iran is the Motherland of Worldwide Terrorism. They are behind Hamas, Hezbollah, Islamic Jihad, etc etc etc. They start wars with their de-facto agents of terror. Everything that is blown up in the world originates in Iran. They say EVERY DAY they want to destroy America & Israel. Okay, so being an official (or even unofficial) state sponsor of terrorist attacks is evil, right?

Where were you during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan? How about the wars in Nicaraugua, El Salvador, and anywhere else in Central and South America that you can name? Where was your righteous indignation and your moral high horse when it was AMERICANS who were either leading the attacks or cheerleading them from the sidelines?

So now that someone else in this shitty world wants to play our game, our way, by OUR rules, we get all put out about it, right?

Typical.

Not really no. Saudi Arabia probably supports more than they do, and the US in it's time defiantly has, so it's hardly a really firm indicator.

Can't wait to see the first city nuked by Iran...we have a betting pool in the office. If it's your city, or your friend's city, don't come-a-cryin' to Bush & Cheney.

Talk about naiive and obtuse...

How's that betting pool work? 'Cause I'll put a million dollars that Iran doesn't nuke ANY city in the next dozen years. What kind of odds will you give me on that?

This is just the kind of useless, unsupported, baseless, juvenile fearmongering the Bush Administration has rejoiced in over the last eight years. And it's pure bullshit, from start to finish. It just don't add up, period. Think about it - you're the president of a nation, and you finally get your atom bomb - what's the very first thing you're going to do? Of course! You just HAVE to nuke the living shit out of somebody, right? And it had better damned well be Israel, because everybody knows you've sworn to end them.

So why doesn't it add up? Because you have one ATOMIC bomb, and you're going up against Israel with their dozens of HYDROGEN bombs. In case you weren't aware of the difference, it's an order of magnitude. Literally. Atomics weapons such as the ones recently developed by North Korea have yields measured in kilotons (x1000 tons of TNT); hydrogen bombs have yields measured in megatons (x1,000,000 tons of TNT).

Okay, so you've got your li'l bomb, comparable to, or smaller than, the one the US dropped on Hiroshima (about 4.5 kilotons). Your first action will be to use it, which will virtually GUARANTEE that you, your race of people, your culture, your society, your country, and even your history, will be wiped from the face of the planet as if they'd never existed in the first place. That will be the Israeli reaction to ANY nuclear strike by Iran or any terrorist group supported by Iran. Iran will simply cease to be.

So you're Iran, and you can't wait to hasten your end, right? Suuuuuuuuuure... You've bought into the whole jihadi thing a little too deeply. You think that every single person who calls himself a Muslim is in a hurry to martyr himself or herself to meet Allah. That's as stupid as thinking that every single Christian is just dying to, well, DIE. They fear pain and death just like anyone else, and often what you see in suicide attacks is someone who simply has nothing left to live for.

I know you can't accept that Iranians are actual, real PEOPLE, just because they're a slightly different color than you, but they really are in no giant hurry to have themselves obliterated from the planet.

What they want, more than anything, is a seat at the Big Boys' table - and that is only granted to nations with (a) lots of oil, or (b) nuclear weapons, or (c) both of the above.

The difference is somewhat pronounced. Military theorists still believed that conventional warfare was still possible using atomic weapons. Then the Thermonuclear bomb was invented and people started talking about nuclear annihilation.

Jewelstaitefan,

heh,

you are so deep in rhettoric here, I wasn't even sure I should bother with a reply. Do you even remember the main-stream media's lock-step drum up to the Iraq war? Did they report anything that the administration wasn't telling them was the truth? Where do you think people like Judith Miller got their information? From journalism?

You don't even have to claim some media conspiracy to be fairly certain that if its information coming from a White House source its going to get reported...that's just the way it works, because first of all, it's the White House, and it makes news, but second of all, the Main Stream Media is lazy and cheap, and if a story is given to them they'll run that over having to do actual reporting almost every time. They'll merely tag it,(and not always) with "the administration claims,"

and go about their business without even fact-checking. They'll Leave that to the 'biased' sources with an axe to grind...sigh

and I wasn't paying a whole lot of attention to politics back in Gore's run to the White House, but EVERY "News" story I heard suggested mockingly that he claimed to have invented the internet. That's what I remember about Al Gore. The fact that the coverage was hyperbolic bullshit was not discovered by me until way later.

And who was saying Dan Rather was right? People were heaping criticism on him, he was getting mauled by every mainstream source...CBS, that bastion of liberal talking points, was eager to get rid of him, and they did force him out.

do you really think you can rewrite history within the span of a few years?

Jesus man, next time come at me with something more substantive than your drive-by flamebait.

Here's what Wiki has to say about Yellowcake and its uses:

Quote:

Yellowcake is used in the preparation of fuel for nuclear reactors, where it is processed into purified UO2 for use in fuel rods for PHWR and other systems using unenriched uranium. It may also be enriched, by being converted to uranium hexafluoride gas (UF6), by isotope separation through gaseous diffusion or in a gas centrifuge to produce enriched uranium suitable for use in weapons and reactors.
Yellowcake is produced by all countries in which uranium is mined.

Also, there's some info about where that shipment to Canada may have originated:

Quote:

The Tuwaitha facility south of Baghdad already possessed yellow cake uranium. Between 1980 and 1982, Iraq procured more than 400 tons of yellowcake from Portugal and Niger which remained in a storage complex close to Tuwaitha. The facility and its yellowcake were monitored and frequently inspected by the International Atomic Energy Agency after the 1991 Gulf War. About 1.8 metric tons of "yellow cake" and 500 tons of unrefined uranium went missing as the Iraqis left Tuwaitha unattended during the war. When the facility was first encountered by U.S. Marines, they thought they had stumbled upon an illegal weapons cache; according to nuclear experts, however, they actually wound up breaking the IAEA seals that are "designed to ensure the materials aren't diverted for weapons use or end up in the wrong hands." The Pentagon dispatched a team to survey the site "after a month of official indecision", finding it heavily looted and said it was impossible to tell whether nuclear materials were missing.
In July of 2008, what was believed to be the last major remnant of Saddam Hussein's nuclear program, the United States government shipped 550 metric tonnes of concentrated natural uranium or yellowcake to Montreal, Canada. The Iraqi government sold the yellowcake to a Canadian uranium producer, Cameco Corp.

So, it seems that the NEW Iraqi government - the one that WE installed - is now proliferating nuclear materials, selling them to the Canucks. Ironic, huh?

Can't really help ya much on the Rather thing, but you've got some learning to do on the Al Gore and the Internet part:

Quote:

Gore never claimed that he "invented" the Internet, which implies that he engineered the technology. The invention occurred in the seventies and allowed scientists in the Defense Department to communicate with each other [through what was called ARPANet]. In a March 1999 interview with Wolf Blitzer, Gore said, "During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet."

Taken in context, the sentence, despite some initial ambiguity, means that as a congressman Gore promoted the system we enjoy today, not that he could patent the science, though that's how the quotation has been manipulated. Hence the disingenuous substitution of "inventing" for the actual language.

But the real question is what, if anything, did Gore actually do to create the modern Internet? According to Vincent Cerf, a senior vice president with MCI Worldcom who's been called the Father of the Internet, "The Internet would not be where it is in the United States without the strong support given to it and related research areas by the Vice President in his current role and in his earlier role as Senator."

The inventor of the Mosaic Browser, Marc Andreesen, credits Gore with making his work possible. He received a federal grant through Gore's High Performance Computing Act. The University of Pennsylvania's Dave Ferber says that without Gore the Internet "would not be where it is today."

Joseph E. Traub, a computer science professor at Columbia University, claims that Gore "was perhaps the first political leader to grasp the importance of networking the country. Could we perhaps see an end to cheap shots from politicians and pundits about inventing the Internet?"

And from Wiki:

Quote:

Gore had been involved with computers since the 1970s, first as a Congressman and later as Senator and Vice-President, where he was a "genuine nerd, with a geek reputation running back to his days as a futurist Atari Democrat in the House. Before computers were comprehensible, let alone sexy, the poker-faced Gore struggled to explain artificial intelligence and fiber-optic networks to sleepy colleagues." According to Campbell-Kelly and Aspray (Computer: A History of the Information Machine), up until the early 1990s public usage of the Internet was limited and the "problem of giving ordinary Americans network access had exercised Senator Al Gore since the late 1970s."
Of Gore's involvement in the then-developing Internet while in Congress, Internet pioneers Vint Cerf and Bob Kahn have also noted that,
As far back as the 1970s Congressman Gore promoted the idea of high speed telecommunications as an engine for both economic growth and the improvement of our educational system. He was the first elected official to grasp the potential of computer communications to have a broader impact than just improving the conduct of science and scholarship [...] the Internet, as we know it today, was not deployed until 1983. When the Internet was still in the early stages of its deployment, Congressman Gore provided intellectual leadership by helping create the vision of the potential benefits of high speed computing and communication. As an example, he sponsored hearings on how advanced technologies might be put to use in areas like coordinating the response of government agencies to natural disasters and other crises.
As a Senator, Gore began to craft the High Performance Computing and Communication Act of 1991 (commonly referred to as "The Gore Bill" ) after hearing the 1988 report Toward a National Research Network submitted to Congress by a group chaired by UCLA professor of computer science, Leonard Kleinrock, one of the central creators of the ARPANET (the ARPANET, first deployed by Kleinrock and others in 1969, is the predecessor of the Internet).
Indeed, Kleinrock would later credit both Gore and The Gore Bill (High Performance Computing and Communication Act of 1991) as a critical moment in Internet history:
A second development occurred around this time, namely, then-Senator Al Gore, a strong and knowledgeable proponent of the Internet, promoted legislation that resulted in President George Bush signing the High Performance Computing and Communication Act of 1991. This Act allocated $600 million for high performance computing and for the creation of the National Research and Education Network. The NREN brought together industry, academia and government in a joint effort to accelerate the development and deployment of gigabit/sec networking.
The bill was passed on Dec. 9, 1991 and led to the National Information Infrastructure (NII) which Gore referred to as the "information superhighway". President George H. W. Bush predicted that the bill would help "unlock the secrets of DNA," open up foreign markets to free trade, and a promise of cooperation between government, academia, and industry.

Prior to its passage, Gore discussed the basics of the bill in an article for the September 1991 issue of Scientific American entitled Scientific American presents the September 1991 Single Copy Issue: Communications, Computers, and Networks. His essay, "Infrastructure for the Global Village", commented on the lack of network access described above and argued: "Rather than holding back, the U.S. should lead by building the information infrastructure, essential if all Americans are to gain access to this transforming technology" [...] "high speed networks must be built that tie together millions of computers, providing capabilities that we cannot even imagine."

Perhaps one of the most important results of the Gore Bill was the development of Mosaic in 1993. This World Wide Web browser is credited by most scholars as beginning the Internet boom of the 1990s:
Gore's legislation also helped fund the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois, where a team of programmers, including Netscape founder Marc Andreessen, created the Mosaic Web browser, the commercial Internet's technological springboard. 'If it had been left to private industry, it wouldn't have happened,' Andreessen says of Gore's bill, 'at least, not until years later.'

As Vice President, Gore promoted the development of what he referred to as the Information Superhighway. This was discussed in detail a few days after winning the election in November 1992 in the The New York Times article "Clinton to Promote High Technology, With Gore in Charge." They planned to finance research that "that will flood the economy with innovative goods and services, lifting the general level of prosperity and strengthening American industry." Specifically, they were aiming to fund the development of, "robotics, smart roads, biotechnology, machine tools, magnetic-levitation trains, fiber-optic communications and national computer networks. Also earmarked are a raft of basic technologies like digital imaging and data storage." These initiatives were met with some skepticism from critics who claimed that, "the initiative is likely to backfire, bloating Congressional pork and creating whole new categories of Federal waste." These initiatives were outlined in the report, Technology for America's Economic Growth. In September 1993, they released a report calling for the creation of a "nationwide information superhighway" which would primarily be built by private industry. Gary Stix commented on these initiatives a few months prior in his May 1993 article for Scientific American, "Gigabit Gestalt: Clinton and Gore embrace an activist technology policy." Stix described them as a "distinct statement about where the new administration stands on the matter of technology [...] gone is the ambivalence or outright hostility toward government involvement in little beyond basic science." Campbell-Kelly and Aspray further note in Computer: A History of the Information Machine:
In the early 1990s the Internet was big news.... In the fall of 1990 there were just 313,000 computers on the Internet; by 1996, there were close to 10 million. The networking idea became politicized during the 1992 Clinton-Gore election campaign, where the rhetoric of the Information Superhighway|information highway captured the public imagination. On taking office in 1993, the new administration set in place a range of government initiatives for a National Information Infrastructure aimed at ensuring that all American citizens ultimately gain access to the new networks.
These initiatives were discussed in a number of venues. Howard Rheingold argued in the 1994 afterword to his noted text, The Virtual Community: Homesteading on the Electronic Frontier, that these initiatives played a critical role in the development of digital technology, stating that, "Two powerful forces drove the rapid emergence of the superhighway notion in 1994 [...] the second driving force behind the superhighway idea continued to be Vice-President Gore." In addition, Clinton and Gore submitted the report, Science in the National Interest in 1994, which further outlined their plans to develop science and technology in the United States. Gore also discussed these plans in speeches that he made at The Superhighway Summit at UCLA and for the International Telecommunications Union.

So, while I know you hang on every sound-bite that Li'l Bushie mangles and mumbles, in this case, Gore deserves far more credit than he's ever gotten.

As far as Clinton and "2/3 of impeachments" - I had no idea that Bill Clinton was involved in the impeachment of Andrew Johnson!
