Hasta la vista, bitch. His brother, Raúl, will be taking over for him. Hopefully both of those a--holes will croke soon.

Viva Cuba Libre!

Roger that! That poor country and its beautiful people have been enslaved to a monster like Castro. I've been to Cuba its a gem. A friend of mine hadn't seen his mother in 25 years. One of the boat people he sends 400 dollars home El Castro takes 125 of it. And Che another murdering slime. The same bozos in the universities that wear che t shirts have free tibet bumper stickers. Sickens me. Well it should be soon that Cuba joins the free world. Its a beautiful place. Hopefully the people bring their cuban culture back to life.

What makes anyone think that even after Fidel & Raul die there will ever be democracy in Cuba? The Communist are not simply going to relinquish their power and iron grip just because the Castros are gone. They will prop up one of their own, and he will continue as dictator, with the backing of the communist army, secret police, and snitches on every corner.

Hey - I resemble that remark!

Actually, I used to be one of the "bozos" who PRINTED those Che t-shirts. Nice, 100% cotton, heavyweight black tee with a very nice 8-color ink-discharge print of Guevera on it. We retailed 'em for $50.

I call it "dressing with irony" - paying big money to wear a picture of a communist leader.

Oh, and I *do* have a Free Tibet sticker. Only mine says "While Supplies Last" underneath it.

Yes, I'm an asshole. An asshole with a snarky sense of humor.

Ditto what you said. Well put.
Only I've never been to Cuba, and I'm not overly bothered by the 'Free Tibet' stickers....

Hell, I'm still trying to hold out "hope" that there will be democracy in the United States...

Didn't Jesse Jackson copyright the term "hope" 20 years ago? ...as in Keep Hope Alive, or I Hope I never get audited by the IRS, or I hope no one ever videos me during one of my corporate shake-down meetings...now that's hope!

Is it true that Cuba's farm land has been ruined by years of mismanagement. Even if Communism falls in Cuba it could be decades before they can make good cigars in mass quantities.

Oh yeah right, there's the free the Cuban people thing too.

I've lived in South Florida for 25 years and know the Cuban exile community quite well. I have co-workers and friends that are Cuban, and over time I have become a big consumer of Cuban food and drinks. I typically start my day before work with a cafe con leche, or sometimes the real deal, the pure, straight, un-adulterated Cuban coffee. Munch down on an empanada, or croquettas jamon, or pan con bistek, and life couldn't feel any better. It's a different world down here, not like most of America where folks are drinking $ 3.00 Starbucks's lattes & apple scones. When Castro croaks, even if the Commies stay in power, there will still be a celebration down here that will shake the world, and at least rival the enthusiam and joyful glee so vividly expressed by Palestinians, non-moderate Muslims, and American college professors on 9/11.

Where the hell can you get a Starbuck's latte for only three bucks?!

:)

On the Cuba thing, did it ever occur to anybody who's sending money to their Cuban relatives that maybe, just MAYBE, they too are helping to prop up the Castro regime? I think Castro would've fallen from power and grace long ago if millions of "patriotic" Cuban-Americans hadn't been sending their hard-earned American pesos back home to Cuba. Case in point:

Also, how exactly is that different from your payroll and income taxes? My paycheck says I make $1275 a week, but by the time it hits my bank account, it's less than a grand. Did El Castro take MY money, too?

Simple solution: Stop sending them money. Wanna see the Castro regime fall? Do what we've done with other Communist nations: don't bomb them with bombs, don't try to seal them off with sanctions and embargoes - bomb them with McNuggets! Seriously, once they get a taste of a Big Mac and a Coke, and we tell them that's what we consider "junk food", hardly worth eating, their systems will collapse pretty quickly.

Shows you how long it's been since I've been to a Starbucks! On the money thing, ...when it's your family and relatives suffering in Cuba with nothing, it's hard not to send money to help. I never knew just how bad things were in Cuba, but I;ve learned that when the Soviets abandoned Cuba as an ally, conditions in Cuba went from bad to ridiculously bad. The people have nothing, threads of clothes, no medicine. Only certain elements of Cuban society reap any modern civilities from the Communists...the average worker peon is basically a slave...and a slave that is watched over constantly. You say the wrong thing, whisper the wrong thing, or even think the wrong thing, and you will disappear. It's a real total shithole of 1930's Stalin-style totalitarianism that is un-imaginabely oppressive.

Kwicko, Oh Boy you don't get it. When your mother is hungry you make sure she eats. Its poor with no economy. The old soviet union was pumping in millions a year to prop them up. So you blame people in the US for the commie problem hmmm did an educator teach you that.

Talk about not getting it. PirateCat, were you born this way, or did your mum drop you on your head? I don't "blame" the US for "the commie problem hmmmm" - I'm simply asking the question: Would Cuba's economy have collapsed a bit quicker if Cubans in the US stopped sending money home? Would it have collapsed more quickly if we'd STARTED sending humanitarian aid (and McNuggets; I'm serious about the McNuggets) IN, or possibly trading goods with Cuba. Say, maybe, I'll trade you some food and medicine for some cigars and rum, huh?

What I'm asking, really, is that you STOP just automatically believing what your government tells you, and START asking questions and applying critical thinking. Why is it that a "commie" regime is a problem in Cuba, but it doesn't stop us from sending more and more of our manufacturing jobs to "commie" places like China and Viet Nam? If it's a problem, isn't it a problem to everyone?

I really want to know, because I *haven't* been taught much at all about Cuba by *any* "educator" - What the fuck is our deal with Cuba? What's our official policy? Does this all really go back to Castro nationalizing the farms and stealing land and businesses from National Fruit? What was it that Cuba did that was SOOOOOO bad that we have treated them as a pariah for over 40 years, when in that same period, we've had good trade relations with places like Iraq, Iran, China, Viet Nam, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Chile, and others? What is it that's UNIQUE about the Cuba problem?

I'm an open book. Educate me.

Kind of amazing that we haven't invaded them... at least not lately! Guess they don't have any oil to speak of?

Well...there's many, many things, and I surely don't know them all :
a) Castro betrayed his friend and ally America...we supported him when he was still in the jungle, and when he toppled Batista, President Eisenhower called Castro the "George Washington of Latin America." Castro chose in 1961 to betray America and become friends with Russia, our great nuclear enemy of the day. That had to chap more than just a few asses at the time here. And yes...nationalized American industries, literally stealing billions from America.
b) Only 90 miles away from America....and Russia had missle bases there...was getting ready to ship nukes, but JFK's embargo & hard-line stance against Kruschev turned the nukes around back to Russia
c) Goes back to Monroe Doctrine....American policy statement from early 1800's that America would not allow a foreign power to establish a foothold in our hemisphere
d) and then 50 years of Cuba's exporting of terror ( mostly in 1970's Africa)
e) and then his "dumping" of 200,000 violent criminals and insane people on Florida's shore
etc etc
Those are some of the reasons Cuba is treated differently.
