Bush is a saint and these articles paint him as less, so screw them.
I've had my Kool-aid, and now I see the light- the Iraq War is for freedom and national security. How could I have been so blind? Capitalism is a pure and noble creation! Peeps here were right all along- Clinton is the source of all the world's woes. He armed Saddam with the WMD's he tried to take over the world with (which Iran now has)!

Get with the program, bush-haters!

Here's the absolute best part:

Quote:

It was the first civil verdict for Iraq reconstruction fraud.

But in 2006, U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis III overturned the jury award. He said Isakson and Baldwin failed to prove that the Coalition Provisional Authority, the U.S.-backed occupier of Iraq for 14 months, was part of the U.S. government.

Not a single Iraq whistleblower suit has gone to trial since.

Edit: Regarding the judge,

Quote:

On Thursday, May 18, 2006 Ellis dismissed a lawsuit filed by Khalid El-Masri, a German citizen, against the CIA and three private companies allegedly involved with his kidnapping, transport, and torture in Kabul.

I just saw Spike Lee's Katrina documentary " When The Levees Broke" on HBO...it turned me around.
I avoided watching it for almost a year because I thought it would be just another Michael Moore-type propaganda piece...but what a surprise, it was outstanding and very fair. Trouble is the villians in all this stand out like sore thumbs, and I would challenge any Bush Admin. supporter to actually sit thru all 4 hours and not come away like I did...shakin' my head in utter dis-belief.
The 3 most compelling moments are:
1) Condi Rice buying designer boutique shoes in NY and playing tennis during Days 4-5 of the waiting
2) Barbara Bush (mama) touring evacuee center in Texas and saying " a lot of these folks were from under-privlidged homes anyway, so this facility is an improvement." Rev Al's reaction to "that one" was priceless.
3) Bush said after a few Katrina days had gone by that "they" had under-estimated the impact of the storm...however there is video of him warning his staff of the potential enormous catastrophe days before it hit...just a total, indifferent lack of leadership of epic proportions.

President Bush was not referring to the storm, Katrina, he was referring to the storm of incompetence (along with a generous helping of wrong decisions) coming from FEMA, the State of Louisiana, and especially the Mayor of New Orleans.

You said it yourself, he warned everyone about the potential enormous catastrophe. Little or nothing was done to prepare the state of city. FEMA did a good job preparing by prepositioning supplies, personel, and equipment...they just mismanaged the deployment.

The New Orleans disaster could have been mitigated by a rapid deploylment of Marines of US Army troops. Ultimately it took an Army General to kick some ass and get things rolling. Such a deployment is illegal until its formally requested by the Governor and that request took days to come despite efforts from the President and the Federal Govt. to get the ball rolling.

I've always thought the Democratic Party hoped to parley Katrina into a political issue over the President's response. They did the same thing in 1992 with hurricanes in Florida. Its simple. If the President responds immediately but illegally then you go after him for that. If he waits and obeys the law, then you go after him for waiting. Hurricane Andrew...1992. Later Bush, this is the first Bush, was very quick to respond to Hurricane Charlie and was bashed for that.

That's all true, and they showed that in this film...but the next question becomes why didn 't Bush or Brownie or Chertoff SCREAM at the top of their lungs to the media that Gov. Blanco was playing politics and would not ask for Federal Assistance. Bush, "the man who does what is right" decided that for Katrina he would follow the rules?..he picked a bad time to obey rules. Should have had all those options ready to go & deployed without "permission" from brain-dead Blanco.

But nothing. You DID see a Michael Moore type hit piece.

Exactly how is Condi Rice shoe shopping and playing tennis a 'compelling moment' ??

How old is mamma Bush? 80+ ?? The Alamo Dome (?) was a well lit, clean and dry place of shelter. I'm sure she's comparing that to what the evacuees had vs what they left behind. Granted, not a great 'home', but she didn't mean it in the way most have taken it out of context. It was far better than the conditions of the LA Superdome.

No one could have predicted the levees WOULD fail. They could speculate, guess, but no one KNEW. Had 'Chocolate City' Nagin done his job, and gotten HIS people out, many would still be here today. Had LA. Gov Blanco not sat on her hands and allowed the National Guard to set up in advance of the storm, instead of waiting until AFTER the fact, then they wouldn't have to have dealt with washed out/ flooded roads.

The city of N.O has had DECADES to prepare for this very storm, the one EVERY SINLGE RESIDENT in South Louisiana KNEW would some day hit, and they failed MISERABLY.

I'm so damn sick of folks trying to pass the buck up to folks in Washington D.C. when the very people who live in Louisiana, where the storm HIT, and who took in BILLIONS of Federal $$$'s for decades, shirked their duties, cut corners on building of the levees and pocketed the rest of the $$, leaving themselves wide open for such a disaster.

Was the FEMA blameless? Hell no. It showed its typical ineptness of how the Fed level burcaucracy works.

People love a happy ending. So every episode, I will explain once again that I don't like people. And then Mal will shoot someone. Someone we like. And their puppy. - Joss

Very little of it surprised me in fact - I will note that after the spectacular failure of FEMA, just how much do you think you could rely on the FDIC in an economic crisis eh ?

But two things completely and totally shocked me, one of them being forced-relocation of american citizens to "camps" of expected deplorable conditions - but the other was downright chilling, watching the 82nd Airborne goosestepping right along with the jackbooted thugs of the police, forcibly disarming american citizens, a little taste of what *could* happen here, and still might, under any administration.

Worse, they did so while not offering those folks any protection from roving gangs of looters and criminals, many of whom were armed, which tells me all I need to know about the priorities of the police - control, their ego, and then own safety, and yours nowhere in there whatsoever.

Rumor has it some of those folks had a "list" of who had guns, and that in itself is damned scary, since the NRA rolled over like fresh meat in a prison lockup for the Gov, as expected.

If a disaster ever befalls MY podunk little town, the Feddies are NOT invited, we can do without their "help", thanks.

And ponder well that the Govs first response was to further victimize, rather than assist, and you see the true nature of the thing.

Well I'll tell ya...if you Dems had put up a viable candidate, which Mr. Kerry was not, somebody like Leiberman or Biden for example, or even Gore again, many Bush 2000 voters would have gone the Dem way in 2004.
Kerry had too much anti-war, anti-military & Kennedy-alignment baggage to be elected President. If he was to run again in 2008 I think he'd waltz in, but unfortunately the Dems are probably gonna nominate more polarizing, non-viable candidates like Hillary & Obama.

...and to actually answer some of your questions AURaptor :

Condi's actions during that emergency are significant, very significant. As the highest ranking African-American woman in the Government, the whole Government, she had her priorities quite a bit upside down and truly tweaked....and then ..on something like DAY 5 or 6, she has the cajones to show up there & say they're doing everything that can be done??!! I watched this shit live on TV over the whole ordeal, night after night, but you cannot appreciate the larger, the huge enormity, the un-imagineable size of the disaster that this documentary sews together. Barbara Bush did say those words, and it can't be spun any other way...yes old First Lady Bush is not to be held to account in any way, but still it is shocking. And yes..Nagin embarrasses retards and embryos with his stupidity..but again HE can't be blamed...it would be like FDR blaming Capone's bag man for the Depression....Ok Louisiana has ALWAYS been corrupt, always been inept...etc etc etc...but if we know all that in advance, the big question then becomes why didn't the FEDS arrest, try & convict all these people who have stolen billions from the rest of us Americans for decades? Everyone on Planet Earth KNEW the Levees could not stand up to a Category 5...and then to also see how this silly-string peice of shit levee "system" was put together with chewing gum and spit...you would build a stronger system for your dog...or at least as strong as what Vick had.
The Govt. has a moral and overriding duty to always protect American citizens from their own inept, corrupt local leaders, especially in times of crisis...This was only 80 trillion times the size of 911 in terms of area, destruction, and ruination of peoples lives.

Ford, Carter, Dukakis, Goldwater, Agnew..ouch..etc etc etc...the list of elected and almost elected leaders of our country is pretty pathetic in my opinion. What do you do...vote for Nader, or Pat Paulson? What does that accomplish? Isn't voting for the "least" damaging idiot better than a vote for a 1%er?

Maybe if you'd bought a clue, you'd realize you do hear from more folk who hated em both than you think - Dean was far and away a better shot than Kerry, but the Dem leadership sandbagged him cause he wasn't playin by the preserve-the-status-quo unspoken "rules", replacing him with Kerry, who even the Dems despised so much his candidacy did WORSE when he actually spoke or campaigned actively, who then took a dive for his fellow bonesman.

That bein said, Dean lost all my respect whatsoever when, after being sandbagged like that, instead of manning up and going third party, he got down on his knees and started sucking the Dem leadership cocks of the very pissants that sold out our country for political partisan gain.

Clinton was such a slime I couldn't stand him, and Gore was such a moonbat that he gave me the willies, not to mention that pyscho nutjob wife of his and her involvement in the PMRC just made me cringe at the idea of her being first lady - and then along comes Bush, so pathetic and small, you're hardly sure he's there at all, or at least he was so under Reagan - yet no one could have forseen Cheney's puppeteering with the help of his Clean Break/PNAC dual-loyalties "Friends" who are busy getting off this administrations sinkin ship and if possible, out of the country, all quick and speedylike, leaving poor lil shrub holding the bag cause he's too fuckin stupid to realize his dumb ass got the mushroom treatment as his pathetic little world collapsed around him.

And to think, I almost voted for the sonofabitch the first time around, but I just couldn't hold back the gag reflex long enough to do it.

I voted for Mickey Mouse.

That's actually an old in-joke for "none of the above" and if you did some research, you'd be pretty wigged by how many votes ole mister mouse gets every year.

I hate all them bastards, cept maybe Ron Paul - who I don't necessarily agree with 100%, but I do respect him.

You're right to be iffy. It didn't happen. It's a psychological defense mechanism. People look for grand, sinister plots behind what is really a very simple case of incompetence and/or corruption to help make sense of what seems senseless.

It's the reason why, even now, after every professional interviewed has said (and provided evidence and logical argument) that the collapse of the WTC towers happened because two planes hit them (not demolitions or missiles, or CIA agents gnawing on the structural supports), people continue to delude themseles about grandiose gov conspiracies to watch every move Joe-Schmoe makes, or to strangle puppies or whatever. It's pathetic.

If my memory serves on Lee's documentary, no, he didn't give any specific credence to the levies being an inside job. At least that's not at all what I took away from his coverage of the subject.

I took away that the people were mistrustful of the government...that the poor specifically had reason to believe that they were a non priority...

that in the past, a levy actually had been intentionally blown to prevent flooding in a richer neighborhood...

ultimately,

that the government in the area, federal or local, has pushed them under the bus enough times, that they have no reason to believe that blowing the levies would be outside of the realm of possibility.

I think his point was a sense of disenfranchisement by the poor in those neighborhoods, a sense of alienation and mistrust of their government.

So no, he did not try to prop up the theory of the levies being blown, at all.

I wasn't sure as to Lee, but I do recall some surprising names bring up the conspiracy theory. But if it wasn't him, then never mind.

Reaverman, just to be clear, I wasn't in any way trying to imply there was any Gov't conspiracy. I was just trying to recall who it was that went on record suggesting such nonsense. It appears Spike Lee wasn't one them. That is all.

Righteous made the point I was going to, and extremely well, you've got a Gov with a history of this kinda thing, the people they've screwed and lied to endlessly, folks ain't gonna trust em, and when the official story reeks of BS, and no one is forthcoming with any logical, rational explaination - they'll buy into a lotta theories, from the eminently plausibles to the downright mooobatty... and I do believe that someone is gonna use that to ill purpose in the near future by exploiting that rift.

Also, Reaverman, that exact problem also applies to why nobody buys the official line of what happened to the twin towers, it's far less a matter of whatever explain-it-away psychobabble the excuse is this week - as it is simply a lack of trust in a collective of people who've been utterly and completely proven to be treacherous backstabbing liars of the lowest calibre.

After the last couple years, folk wouldn't believe the Gov if the Gov told em the sun rose in the east, and can ya blame em ?
