Whatever happenned to the Amish schoolhouse massacre?. ..I know the truck driver who did it killed himself in the end, but where are all the so-called "professionals" solutions and/or explanations?

Ok Kane, if it's a democrat shooter, I'll post a fake post saying how I've turned a new leaf and George Bush is right about Iraq, abortion, and gay marriage.

If it's a republican shooter, you post a fake post admitting your gay and coming out of the closet.

Got the guts to shake on it????

On a more serious note, this may be the dealiest mass shooting in American history. The death toll looks to be over thirty.

You'd think somebody would have tackled him. Since they didn't it makes you wonder what he was packing to get so many so dead.

My question is- Where the fuck were th epolice in the second shooting?
Newswave, folks- there were two, count 'em, TWO shootings, by the same guy, two hours apart on opposite sides of campus. The second SHOULDN'T HAVE HAPPENED!!!!!!! That is unforgiveable stupidity on their part; when someone gets shot, you STOP and make sure you got the fucking right guy. Because of that, this crazy ass fucktard was able to kill even more people before he turned the gun on himself. This is just UNFORGIVEABLE, and should never happen on such a scale again. Two hours. Two shootings. One day. One guy. This is sick and could have been STOPPED. And know the death toll is up to thiry one confirmed dead; the fucktard and thirty shool folk.

Are you bleeding yet?

Two pistols, 'parently; one with a mag that holds 15-20 shots, and another with some ten bullets in a mag (I didn't get the specs on the gun yet, only the bullet count for each. This is how he was able to shoot so much in so short a time)

Are you bleeding for them yet?

The police should be ashamed of themselves for allowing him to do it TWICE!

The thing that gets me is this will be used to attempt to tighten gun control laws, when I can gaurantee you the guy that did this didn't go through legal channels to get his weapons.

Four Hired Guns in an Armored Truck, Bullets Flying, and a Pickup and a Taxi Brought to a Halt. Who Did the Shooting and Why? On the afternoon of July 8, 2006, four private security guards rolled out of Baghdad's Green Zone in an armored SUV. The team leader, Jacob C. Washbourne, rode in the front passenger seat. He seemed in a good mood. His vacation started the next day. "I want to kill somebody today," Washbourne said, according to the three other men in the vehicle, who later recalled it as an offhand remark. Before the day was over, however, the guards had been involved in three shooting incidents. In one, Washbourne allegedly fired into the windshield of a taxi for amusement, according to interviews and statements from the three other guards. Washington Post, April 15, 2007

To defend the students, the University of Virginia sent out an email at 7:15AM, warning students of an "unfortunate accident", as all classes resumed without any police protection, nor warning that a gunman was on the loose. Just like Columbine, students were "locked down" with the gunmen, then forced to jump out windows, as police Swat teams refused to rescue any students and teachers, with most dying from lack of medical care for their survivable wounds. Just like 9/11/2001, when the Port Authority Police of NY announced on the loudspeakers for World Trade Center employees to "remain at your desk, do not leave the building," as the robot planes attacked as a diversion for the 1,000s of preinstalled explosives exploded in WTC.

How many parking tickets were sued by the University of Virginia Police against its student slaves, as the shootings continued unabated? How much money does UV pay its impotent president and coaches? At University of Tennessee in Knoxville (alma mater of the owners of Controlled Demolitions Inc), the school president is overpaid $750,000/year, and coaches are overpaid $2-million/year, as billions of taxdollars are looted from the school's CAFR pension funds.

When I personally reported a potential school shooter to administrators at Pellissippi State college in Knoxville, back in 2000, numerous retaliations were taken against me. A student in a philosophy class was making SERIOUS public statements about coming to school and shooting people. The students and teacher were actually laughing about it, by laughing about the student behind his back after class. I told the teacher (a registerd nurse on psy meds) that I didn't consider this a laughing matter, but she chose not to pass that relevant info to her bosses. So I reported this event to the administration, and identified the student. I reported that he probably had a psychiatric disease, and probably wasn't serious, but that someone ought to see if he needs some medical attention. In retaliation, an armed uniformed cop from Loudon County Sheriff Dept sat next to me in the school library (located outside his jurisdiction in Knox County), striking a conversation in the empty library, admitting he was not a student. An active-duty uniformed Tennessee Army National Guard "student" sat next to me in literature class, before "dropping out". My job in US Air Farce was loading nukes on supersonic bombers, and sabotaging US military bases using conventional bombs. We were NEVER allowed to wear uniforms off-base or off-duty. My online test scores and grades were continually tampered with, and access was given to my personnel file for persons unidentified. I previously had won the TN state collegiate website design contest, winning a $15,000 prize for Pellissippi, and I had considered running for "student government" (which had been replaced by unelected appointed student "officers"). In my previous life in engineering college many decades ago, I was VP of my freshman class.

April 18th is the aniversary of the Columbine High School Hell by Jewish shooters, the OK City bombing of federal employees by federal employees, the Jewish slaughter of the Christian church at Waco/Crawford. All these slaughters triggered "gun control" legislation to disarm the crime victims to prevcent them from defending themselves. April 18 is also anniversary of the Battle of Lexington and Concord, kicking off the US Revolutionary War (British American Civil War), when Americans preferred committing treason by shooting police officers rather than submit to "gun control" seizure of their 50-caliber "assault weapon" muskets.

Communist Manifesto was written by Jew Karl Marx in London England. Communism was funded by Jewish banksters in London and NY City, resulting in mass murder and canibalism of over 100-million people, who were first diarmed not only of guns, but also knives and farm tools. Before the gun bans came gun registration, to identify which house for police raids.

Mass murderers agree, gun control works.

Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

Of course, when Dick Cheney shoots a Republican lawyer in the head, its open season on all Americans...

There has been a case report of severe hypotension when PAXIL was added to chronic metoprolol treatment. PAXIL has not been systematically studied in animals or humans for its potential for abuse, tolerance or physical dependence. Based on the mechanism of action of paroxetine and the potential for serotonin syndrome, caution is advised when PAXIL is coadministered with other drugs or agents that may affect the serotonergic neurotransmitter systems, such as tryptophan, triptans, serotonin reuptake inhibitors, linezolid (an antibiotic which is a reversible non-selective MAOI), lithium, tramadol, or St. John's Wort (see Serotonin Syndrome). A multiple-dose study has shown that there is no pharmacokinetic interaction between PAXIL and lithium carbonate. However, since there is little clinical experience, the concurrent administration of paroxetine and lithium should be undertaken with caution.

I hear you.

Lest we forget, guns on school campus stop serial killers, even in Virginia:

Quote:

Appalachian School of Law shooting

The The Appalachian School of Law (ASL) shootings occurred January 16, 2002. ASL is an ABA accredited private law school in Grundy, Virginia, United States.

On January 16, 2002, the Dean, Anthony Sutin, Professor Thomas Blackwell, and student Angela Dales were shot and killed by disgruntled student Peter Odighizuwa, 43, of Nigeria. Three other students were shot but survived. The abrupt ending to Odighizuwa ‘s shooting spree is attributed to three students with personal firearms who quickly took action. At the first sound of gunfire, fellow students Tracy Bridges and Mikael Gross, unbeknownst to the other, ran to their vehicles to grab their personal firearms. Bridges and Gross then worked with Ted Besen, the third student. The three students approached Odighizuwa from different angles. Bridges raised his revolver and pointed it at Odighizuwa who then dropped his firearm and was first subdued by Besen followed by other students. Once Odighizuwa was securely held down Gross went back to his vehicle and retrieved handcuffs to help hold Odighizuwa until police could arrive. Police reports noted there were two empty eight round magazines belonging to Odighizuwa’s .380 semi-automatic handgun. It is unclear whether Odighizuwa ran out of ammunition or if there was still one round in the chamber at the time that he dropped his firearm.

Appalachian Law School Shootings - Media Crushes The Truth

By Ted Lang
January 13, 2004

Both Dr. John R. Lott, Jr., in his book The Bias Against Guns [© 2003, Regnery – Washington, D.C.] and Bernard Goldberg in his most recent book, Arrogance [© 2003, Warner – New York, N.Y.] discuss the shocking media bias and factual manipulation used by the Second Amendment-hating press to advance false information to fool the public. Both authors focused upon the same astonishing media manipulation that became evident in the case of the Appalachian Law School shootings back in 2002.

Quoting from Goldberg’s book, “A student at the Appalachian School of Law in Grundy, Virginia, who has just been told he will be suspended for failing grades, storms through the campus, clutching a handgun. As terrorized students run for their lives, they hear him say, ‘Come get me, come get me.’ But before anyone can get him, the student, a forty-two-year old immigrant from Nigeria, goes on a shooting spree, killing a dean, a professor, and a fellow student. He also shoots and wounds three other students – one in the abdomen, one in the throat, and another in the chest.”

Goldberg continues, “Finally, as the Washington Post reports, ‘Three students pounced on the gunman and held him until help arrived.’ Later in the story, the Post says, ‘The students then tackled the gunman.’ John Roberts at CBS News reported the story the very same way: ‘Three people were killed … before students tackled the suspect.’ At NBC News, Kevin Tibbles said the students ‘overpowered the gunman and held him until police could arrive.’”

Goldberg relates that, “The bloody incident happened on January 16, 2002, and was picked up by news organizations all over the country, almost all of which covered the story the way the Washington Post and the networks did. Which means virtually all of them left out one tiny, little fact. Two of the three students who ‘pounced on’ and ‘tackled’ and ‘overpowered’ the gunman, also had guns.” Clearly, Mr. Goldberg was being sarcastic, and justifiably so.

This explanation of the events surrounding the shooting is from Dr. Lott’s book: “The fast responses of two male students, Mikael Gross, thirty-four, and Tracy Bridges, twenty-five, undoubtedly saved many lives. Mikael was outside the law school and just returning from lunch when Peter Odighizuwa started his attack. Tracy was in a classroom waiting for class to start. When the shots rang out, utter chaos erupted. Mikael said, ‘People were running everywhere. They were jumping behind cars, running out in front of traffic, trying to get away.’”

Lott explains the actual encounter: “Mikael and Tracy were prepared to do something quite different: Both immediately ran to their cars and got their guns. Mikael had to run about one hundred yards to get to his car. Along with Ted Besen [who was unarmed], they approached Peter from different sides. As Tracy explains it, ‘I stopped at my vehicle and got a handgun, a revolver. Ted went toward Peter, and I aimed my gun at [Peter], and Peter tossed his gun down. Ted approached Peter, and Peter hit Ted in the jaw. Ted pushed him back and we all jumped on.’”

Dr. Lott is a renowned statistician who has done extensive research proving irrevocably the false and fraudulent "evidence" consistently churned up and mass produced by the media for public consumption. These lies, falsehoods, spikes and the withholding of important facts is what enables tiny, insignificant statist minority groups to greatly magnify their power and dominate and subjugate the majority, forcing upon us an agenda guaranteeing the destruction of one of the American people’s greatest constitutional protections. And the liberal agenda they wish to saddle us with concerns the issue of crime, which has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with the Second Amendment.

Tavistock - The Best Kept Secret in America
By Dr. Byron T. Weeks, MD
British intelligence will trigger such terrorist events where it has control over the local media, and psychiatric, police, and intelligence networks. It has this control in Scotland, where a pedophile well known to police murdered 16 five- and six-year-olds and their teacher, in the town of Dunblane on March 13, 1996;
www.unsaccodicanapa.com/htmlpages/globalcorporatepower.html

Even the real Crocodile Dundee, Rodney William Ansell, was gunned down in summary execution by police state death squad, for the crime of running for parliament in Oz, after gangsta govt stole his 25,000-acre farm.
www.lewrockwell.com/suprynowicz/suprynowicz48.html

Now the violence has escalated, since only criminals have guns, and victims are never allowed the right to life by self defense. Criminals and gangsta govt love it that way.

It worked in the UK after a mind-controlled individual killed 16 small children and their teacher in Dunblane, Scotland on March 13, 1996. About 10 months later, parliamentary laws were passed that said that possessing a gun in the UK meant 10 years in prison. Legislation was passed even faster in Australia when a gunman armed with an assault rifle killed 35 and wounded 19 in a massacre in Tasmania, Australia on March 28, 1996-just two weeks after the Dunblane shootings.

THE PORT ARTHUR MASSACRE CONSPIRACY
At 12.40AM on the 4th Feb 1999 in New York City, four plain clothes police officers accidently shot an unarmed black man on the stoop of his building as he reached for his wallet. The police mistook the man's action as reaching for a gun and fired 41 shots from a distance of about 12 ft (3 meters) with 9mm semiautomatic pistols each holding 16 bullets in the magazine. The man, Amadou Diallo, died from gunshot wounds after being hit only 19 times. If the NY Police are such lousy shots perhaps they should try to find the real Port Arthur shooter to give them some lessons. Read why Martin Bryant couldn't have been the shooter at Port Arthur.

MASONIC MAFIA PEDOPHILE SCHOOL MASSACRE IN DUNBLANE SCTOLAND
The Dunblane massacre was a multiple murder-suicide which occurred at the primary school in the Scottish town of Dunblane on 13 March 1996. It remains the deadliest attack on children in United Kingdom history. Sixteen children and one adult were killed, in addition to the attacker. On Wednesday, 13 March 1996, unemployed former shopkeeper and Scout leader Thomas Hamilton walked into the school armed with two 9 mm Browning HP pistols and two Smith and Wesson .357 revolvers. He was carrying 743 cartridges. Hamilton's exact motives remain unknown, though it is a matter of record that there were complaints to police regarding his suspicious behaviour towards the young boys who attended the youth clubs that he ran. There were suspicions prior to the massacre that Hamilton's interest in boys was paedophilic, with more than one complaint being made regarding him having taken photographs of semi-naked boys without the parents' consent. He claimed in letters that rumours about him led to the collapse of his shop business in 1993, and in the last months of his life he complained again that his attempts to set up a boys' club were subject to persecution by the police and the scout movement. Among those he complained to were local MP Michael Forsyth and the Queen. In the 1980s, another MP, George Robertson, who lived in Dunblane, had complained to Forsyth about Hamilton's local boys' club, which his son had attended. On the day following the massacre, George Robertson spoke of having argued with Hamilton "in my own home". There has been unfounded speculation about the relationship between Hamilton and Robertson. As the law stood at the time, the police were unable to revoke Hamilton's firearms certificate (gun licence) because there were no substantiated grounds to do so. Although one Central Scotland Police officer had recommended (in a lengthy report on Hamilton) that revoking his firearms certificate should be considered, this was overruled as the Deputy Chief Constable considered that he would be able to appeal successfully. The Deputy Chief Constable resigned at the same time as Lord Cullen's report into the massacre was published.
The Cullen Inquiry recommended tighter control of handgun ownership as well as other changes in school security and vetting of people working with children under 18. However because the Hungerford massacre also involved a legal gun owner killing with his legally held guns, public feeling had turned against private gun ownership, allowing a much more restrictive ban on handguns to pass. Since the massacre, questions have been raised about the actions of Central Scotland Police in the case, and numerous Internet conspiracy theories have arisen regarding alleged involvement by Freemasonry, George Robertson, MI6, the supporters of the Snowdrop Petition and Northern Ireland terrorist organisations. These were, to some extent, fuelled by the 100-year restriction on publication of parts of the Cullen Inquiry into the massacre.

Good question. Not much worldwide data on gun crime aside from murder, and only a small sample of countries. Nationmaster shows just 32 in it's "murder by firearms per capita" chart. the US is 8 of 32, but trailing far behind South Africa, which has over 26 times the firearms murders, Columbia, with almost 19 times, and Thailand with 11.5 times.

Its amazing that when someone goes into a school and starts shooting people it takes someone else with a gun to end it.

When you make it harder for law abiding citizens to get a gun you make it easier for the criminals to victmize innocent people.

Virginia has some very easy gun laws. You don't even need a permit (though getting a permit makes it easier to get more guns faster than 1/month.) I don't see how gun control is the issue.

This is the reason why I will *NOT* pick up, or drop off, on-campus, period.

Why not just put up a "Unarmed Victims Here!" sign ? in the end it amounts to the same thing, most every multi shooting of this nature happens in a place where firearms are not welcome, because the shooter KNOWS his targets are defenseless.

While I don't agree with the man about a lot of things, Lawdog says it better than I ever could.

And, if I was any of the victims parents, I would be levelling charges of reckless endangerment and criminal negligence against the college administration in response to such an idiotic policy.

Criminals do not obey the law, that's why they're criminals, so such a restriction only affects law abiding folk, setting them up as defenseless victims for any predator that happens by - this is also why I do not stop at Ohio rest stops, because they have a similar "Victims Here!" policy.

If I can't pack, I don't go.

Gun control is a moot issue. As in it has nothing to do with why people shoot one another.

For example, Canada has pretty much the same number of guns per capita as the US. We also have *far* more strict gun laws. Yet, we don't have nearly the violent crime that the US does i.e. the "Unarmed Victims Here!" argument is utter crap.

Hmmm... perhaps, just perhaps it is a societal thing rather than a gun law thing. Maybe. Just maybe. I mean, I'm actually starting to wonder if people in the US will ever realize that there are other options than guns when solving problems. As in working to solve the root problem rather than working to deal with it at such a catastrophic level. The root problem being that the US has an *extremely* violent culture.

Several people here have implied that people should carry firearms so that things like this won't happen (or at least not on this scale). Well, it is *very* obvious that this is just a "band-aid" to the problem. And a *very* bad one at that. All this will do is further re-enforce the violent culture that is the very problem in the first place.

Again, other countries have *far* more strict gun laws (hell to my knowledge the UK police still don't carry) and we get along just fine without these violent incidents happening all the time.

Perhaps it's time that you guys decided to actually deal with your issues instead of letting them get out of hand; your politicians only pretending to deal with them. Because your house is on fire and it's not just threatening your neighbours anymore. Our houses are starting to catch fire too.

Criminals will ALWAYS get guns, so it is impossible to ban guns for criminals. Anyone can manufacture their own gun out of household items, even criminals INSIDE A PRISON. A shotgun can be made out of steel pipe with a screw-on cap.

At Columbine, which was a federal VICTIMS HERE GUN BAN area, the Jewish Trenchcoat Mafia and/or govt agents carried in 120 BOMBS, some weighing 100 pounds each. The 2 "official" Jewish shooters only hunted Christians, asking their vitims what their religious preference was (hint: LIE and say you are Jewish). The 2 official shooters ran the school website, and turn in a school project showing themselves walking through the school shooting people, before the actual shooting. Half the students were warned not to show up that day, and the sheriff and principal knew to stay away at lunch TOGETHER that day. The SWAT cops confessed on audiotape to shooting escaping students, then waited 4 hours to go in.

I wonder if any students or victims families will sue for an injunction to allow students and faculty to carry firearms at this school?

It will be interesting to see how the facts play out in this new case, regarding covert actions and mind-control projects. The shooter's brother is in jail for bank robbery, escape and murders, after being mind-controled as a govt serial killer in the Gulf Wars. Pentagon's Operation Northwoods included govt snipers, gunmen and bombers assassinating folks at random in USA, to create terror and blame innocent patsies. The Virginia Tech shootings were preceeded by at least 6 "bomb threats" and "mass evacuations" or "drills" in the past week, just like on 9/11/2001.

At the least, Uncle Scam is criminally negligent (a felony) for disarming the slaves and denying them the right to self defense. All college administrators and members of congress responsible should be immediately arrested for this crime, by citizen's arrest if necessary, and prosecuted by pro se special prosecutors, if the DA refuses to do his job by obstructing justice, which is also a crime outside his discretion. But I bet the sheeple do nothing, and just sue in civil court for negligence, for a bribe to shut up. They don't even have to sue in court to get paid hush money, they just file a claim at the college Risk Management Office, under Federal or Virginia Tort Claims Act, which is often required before suing Big Brother in a court.

This is the same genocidal psychopathic Uncle Scam that murdered 25,000 US citizens since 9/11/2001, by refusing to arrest 40-million criminal aliens in USA, and murdered 2.5-million Iraqis in the nonstop 15-year war. Was this "Asian" school shooter an illegal alien ignoring a visa?

Doesn't bother me, have to be everybody though, because bad guys will always be able to get guns somehow.

Thing is, as I have said time and time again, I carry a piece for the exact same reason I have a fire extinguisher - to hold my own and protect myself until the cavalry arrives (via cellphone) or cover my ass while I make a quick escape.

And I am beginning to believe that anyone who honestly, truly, has a problem with me carrying via that philosopy and with that express purpose.. is suffering from some level of mental illness.
Quote:

i.e. the "Unarmed Victims Here!" argument is utter crap.

Oh ?

Would you be willing to rent a place in the worst projects ghetto you could find, for a month, with a sign on the door stating
"This is a gun free home, firearms are not welcome here!"

Does that seem sensible ?
Logical ?
Do you think it would ensure your safety ?

It's the same principle, so don't be telling me it's "utter crap" unless you're willing to bet your very life on a "Gun Free Zone" to protect you.

The day I see such a barrier physically stop a criminal like a stone wall, I might start believing in it, but it makes as much sense as holding up a don't bite me sign in front of a freshly chummed shark and expecting it to stop him.

I also don't buy that a physical object, an inanimate THING, and a tool causes the problem - as you noted culture and society and social ills aplenty contribute to it, and either directly or indirectly cause it, sure, but a firearm in and of itself, never harmed anyone - and until the day I see one levitate off the table and blow a hole in someone, I categorically reject any attempt to blame the tool instead of the user.

That's like blaming me, personally, for what this lunatic did, and I find that offensive in the extreme - if you think someone like me is contributing to the danger, you've got some serious problems upstairs.

There is what should be, and there is what IS.

I refuse to blind myself to the obvious and depend on naivety and hope to protect myself and those I care about, when there are tools available to ensure that safety as such as possible, nobody sees my toolbox, flashlight or fire extinguisher as a crime about to happen, why the bloody hell should they see my piece that way, I ask you ?

As long as there are are bad people in this world, unstable people, folks who wanna take from you, hurt you, even kill you - folks should have every right to an effective, meaningful defense of their own person at all times, and anyone who would wish to take that from me makes no more sense to me than someone who would wish to ban my fire extinguisher or my flashlight.

You're welcome to protect yourself with nothing more than hope and faith, it's your life and yours to run as you see fit - but I choose to protect myself with something a bit more substantial, and the moment someone tries to take that from me, I question why - and come away not liking any of the answers.

Until the day you can magically make gun toting criminals disappear from the earth, you can take your gun free zones and stuff em, because all that is, is wishful thinking and naivety, and THAT gets people killed.

Actually as I understand it more UK police can carry guns now, because their crime rate jumped, as did Australia...after they banned guns!

The US also has a higher level of personal freedom than many Europeean-socialist countries. In the UK as I understand it you are taxed at 100% after a certain amount of money is obtained, which is why many UK actors & writers come to the US.

Nobody has said this that I'm aware of, but does anyone else notice a difference in this "rampage" as compared to other such events?

Like a 2 hour lull in activity? Like a half-mile geographic shift in location? If this was indeed the same shooter why the change?

If he just wanted to kill people then why not just kill folks in the dorm?

What about the bomb threats?

This incident stinks...& I don't mean just in the level of death.

Also could someone explain to me how we have a 32 to 15 (18) dead to wounded ratio?

That's some pretty decent accuracy from a "lunatic" who it is being said comes from another country, actually that's pretty good accuracy for anyone.

I'm not buying the official line on this...it don't smell right.

As I understand it he lined them up & shot them in the head, that's why the high kill ratio.

I believe he went to the Engineering building because he probably was an engineering student himself...and it is after all called Virginia Tech...what better way to inflict terror than with the brightest kids there, the engineers?

My question is...Where does a foreign exchange student get these handguns?

I believe the 2 hour delay was due to...he walked across campus after killing his girlfirend(??) and another, then walked calmly over to a coffee shoppe and pondered his options...knowing he would get caught eventually, he decided to go out in a blaze of "glory" and take as many with him as possible...that is a very common theme amongst these psychopaths.

Police identified the classroom shooter as Cho Seung-Hui, 23, a senior from South Korea who was in the English department and lived in another dorm on campus. They said Cho committed suicide after the attacks, and there was no indication Tuesday of a possible motive.

Two law enforcement officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because the information had not been announced, said Cho's fingerprints were found on the guns used in both shootings. The serial numbers on the two weapons had been filed off, the officials said.

Just gotta say that this whole gun control/no gun control argument is completely beside the point.

There is no physical way to prevent this kind of thing from happening. Perhaps you can protect yourself--live in a concrete bunker, pay people to get your mail, or something--but You won't prevent this from happening to someone else.

Even with the strictest, most totalitarian government in place, a man who wants to get a gun will get a gun and if he has no interest in his own survival he can kill a bunch of people before he dies. On the other hand, even if guns were as available as cigarettes, many, many people would have no interest in owning one. So what? Do we make laws requiring that every citizen own a gun and carry it? What would we do with folks who broke that law, shoot them?

As long as we live in a world of strangers this kind of thing is possible. As long as concepts like "going out in a blaze of glory" appeal to the human mind, this kind of thing can happen.

We cannot control the darkness in the human soul, but we can learn to understand it. Maybe we should try. That's what 9/11 should have taught us, but sadly, we've got a long way to go before we choose the healing option over the revenge option.

Will there ever come a day when healing is cool?

"Doesn't bother me, have to be everybody though, because bad guys will always be able to get guns somehow."

Not to pick on any one poster, as several have said much the same. But this is a mantra, usually invoked by what some people call 'the guns nuts', and I have NEVER seen any data on this. I suspect it's one of those things that get repeated over and over, true or not. Does anyone have ANY data to back this up?

Otherwise, as far as I'm concerned, this goes into the 'maybe' pile and doesn't count for purposes of the topic.

As to Canada and Brazil, Candians have as many RIFLES but not nearly as many handguns. And when sections of Brazil - some favelas noted BTW for extreme poverty, lucrative drug trafficking, and powerful, ultra-violent gangs - instituted a handgun buy-back program, gun deaths dropped 25% in less than a year. That's b/c the figures indicated MOST gun deaths were caused by your average Jose in a bar fight with another average Jose, and not by the criminals.

Guns don't kill people, handguns do?

Actually as I understand it more UK police can carry guns now, because their crime rate jumped, as did Australia...after they banned guns!
.

Actually no. The UK had gun bans for a very long time, I believe since the '50's. What has happened recently is that because travel within the EU is so easy people just go to Belgium and buy guns there. Rules on gun ownership in Belgium are very lax in part because Belgium gun manufacturers keep it that way (much like the US gun makes do over here.)

That's the crazy thing about this debate, Rue. The subject only seems to come up when some lunatic guns down a bunch of people. That's the only time a lot of people feel that "something has to be done."

But exactly nothing can be done in these extreme cases. No amount of control can make us safe from madness.

As for the "average Jose," yes, sure, of course gun control can have an impact, but these freak murder sprees are beyond the reach of any gun legislation.

The problem with gun control, see, is the fact that is a very thin knife edge that you walk with 'em, andmost folk end up gettin' cut... err, shot, I mean.
The U.S. has so many gun-related crimes because it is so easy to physicaly get a gun, but a pain in the ass to legally use 'em. In places like Pennsylvania, where gun control laws are more lax than other parts of the country, the crimes are proportionately less likely to happen. Why? Well, why would someone try to rob folk at gunpoint when they can shoot back? That's like the fool who tried to rob a gunstore (After walking past a marked, yes, MARKED policecar and with a uniformed officer inside. Needless to say, he died with an odd dozen holes in him). If you're more likely to get shot, most folks won't do it! Seems simple, but then you add polotics to the mix. Which means lies, egos, and scandals and the like.

Are we having fun yet?

Washington DC has the strictest gun laws in America...also happens to have the highest gun-murder rate too. What does that mean exactly?...I really don't know, but it's significant.

Hi there HK.

Just some random thoughts. While there are all sorts of ways to start wars, the only way to end them is when one side has had enough - when there is a sea change of opinion. And for gun violence, I think that's what happened in Brazil. People were finally so tired of the violence they said enough! - não mais! It wasn't the buy-back per se, it was people's desire for a solution and peace. The same thing happened with Imus. As long as only a very limited and self-selected audience was aware of him, he was able to fly under the radar. But the larger world had already said enough for that kind of thing, and, once exposed, his presence shriveled and died.

So, yeah, one really bent dude or dudette can't be stopped by general measures. But overall, it may be possible to stop the vast amount of killing when people, finally, say - enough. And then the problem will be fixed, not because of handgun buybacks or guns being outlawed or whatever specific measure is taken, but because the vast majority will be behind it.

Gun control/no gun control is actually irealevant.

Julius Ceaser wasn't killed with an Uzi, Joan of Arc didn't die by firing squad, & thousands of Jews weren't shot by the inquisition.

Murder isn't confined to the use of firearms, gun control is simply a convenient way to keep people in political power.

The 2nd amendment is about keeping control in the hands of citizens...not government.

In Spain in the 15th century they tried to institute "dagger control", it didn't work, & interestingly the criteria to carry a dagger at night was that you had to carrt a torch or lantern & an accompaning sword. This would conveniently deny the ability to defend onesself in the hands of the wealthy, poor people couldn't afford swords.

Most gun control measures work the same way, private security, permits, licences, bodyguards etc. allow monied individuals to violate "weapons resrictions" (even in Europe) while making the poorer classes defenceless.

I'm sure King George was a great proponent of Gun Control, I know Mussalini was.

According to reports Rosie O'Donnell has a bodyguard who carries a full-auto machine pistol.

One of the members of the much forgotten (& rightfully so) "Million Mom March" was busted in New York for carrying a handgun while putting up signs for the (anti-gun) march.

Sen. Fienstien who is a big supporter of gun control legislation (& has Secret Service protection) owns, & has permits for at least 2 handguns.

The hypocrisy on the issue inself is so thick you couldn't get a .50 cal BMG round through it.
