Imus came to New York radio in 1971. There was tremendous buzz and fanfare about this guy who was "revolutionizing" radio. So I listened....I was not impressed. Now 36 years later he's made mega-millions form his show where he has consistently been way over the line on a myriad of issues and statements. The guy turned into some sort of demented Ebeneezer Scrooge of the airwaves, slinging vitriol at just about everything....bashing Jews, Catholics, Homosexuals, Vietnamese, Republicans, Democrats, etc etc ...He became the sick old twisted Universal Hater.

But now he called the Rutger's Women's BBall team " nappy-headed ho's ". Oh the horror! Sure he's gotta go, and sure that remark was vile...but where's the outrage been for 30 years?
Before Howard Stern migrated to satellite, he made his living on the radio calling women skanky ho's and bitches, and routinely denigrated homosexuals...along with his daily barrage of sexually charged conversation for the morning drive the kids to school hour. So with Imus... Why now? Why this? He's said plenty worse.

Jackson said it on FOX yesterday. Its because NBC does not have any black hosts. Not since they fired Jackson for his EXTREMELY low ratings.

But it is unusual. Good thing Imus is a liberal or else he'd be in real trouble (remembering Limbaugh's all too brief career on Monday Night Football which ended after a slightly unfavorable review of a certain Eagles QB of color).

WHo died... I don't think your reply is at all relevant to this issue.

1) I am not on the radio or TV
2) I never said I hate anyone
3) I never used vile, derogatory descriptions of people.

What I did post ( that you so wonderfully resurrected ) is a statement of what I believe to be the voter base of the Democrat Party....based of course on voting records and Democrat fund raising information.

I listened to the comments that caused the uproar. They say a lot more about Imus' view of women than they do about anything else. He talks about both the Rutgers and Tennessee teams. According to Imus, the Rutgers women athletes are "nappy headed hos" and the Tennessee women athletes are "cute." Anything about their skills as basketball players? Anything about their ability to execute on offense or defense as a team? Anything about anything related to basketball? Nope. Hos or cute. That's all he could come up with after watching the national championship game.

Stupid idiot.

What's more disturbing to me is not so much what these talk radio guys, (Imus, Limbaugh, Stern, etc.), say - as it is the people who take them seriously. These guys are carnival barkers hawking their own stupid opinions just to sell something - don't listen to them - form your own opinion, don't let some moron tell you how to think....

and for what it's worth - Imus should lose his job for his racist, sexist remarks - but he won't...

He didnt say anything new. Rappers(black or white) say it all the time if not more so. Yet no one goes after them?

This is a freedom of speech country, once you take that away, then get the Nazi flag out.

From what i understand about him he has one of the lowest ratings, so what a total of 10 people heard it. He is paid by NBC, and they act like it is something new. I think it is also funny how people like Chris Matthews from Hardball, wanted to get on his show so many times, now he is willing to hang him out to dry, hahah

Say what you want about the right, but it is always the left who start the name calling when it come to the battle of ideas.

I dont agree with what he said, but come on, nappy and ho, are not curse words. I heard Jay Leno and Dave Letteman use the word "Bitch" so where is the N.O.W. group going after them for the demeaning words towards women?

Like Jesse Jackson, Louis Farakan and other black leaders dont say commits all the time about white people, no one is looking to get them fired!!

Hell, Hillery Cliton made a commint about Asia Indians "Gandi couldnt be here, he was working at a 7-11." uh , didnt hear the ACLU slap her around like Imus, She should be fired, but she wont.

I just think "Let he who is without sin , cast the first stone." and the left wing media should shut up.

The team acts like their life is over cause of this, well i bet none of them even listen to his program, so why should they care? i dont care what any of you think of me. you think if some one called me a "ho" i would stop my life and get all upset. they are looking for all kinds of attention and the left wing media is willing to help them with that.

I heard the team talk today on the news and all their commints sounded scripted and fake. they looked like they didnt know what the heck was going on. but when they stepped up the mic they have all these statements. then after the press conferance, they couldnt answer a serious question. not to say they are stupid or anything, but you could tell they were not as upset as TV were making them.

but it makes a good story!

Quick question, Tholo, since when did freedom of speech mean that no one could challenge the assholitability of said speech?

Sounds to me like you want to limit the freedom of speech of those who are speaking out against what Imus said.

This sends me off on a tangent, not particularly related to you, Tholo, unless you choose to own the personality I'm describing...

I've seen a general trend in growing whininess from haters. They want to be able to say anything. But they don't want to deal with the consequences of exposing their small-mindedness. Shit like, "Calling me a racist is trying to limit my freedom of speech." Yeah, right. Pull the other one, it's got bells on. They're just pissed that they can't say openly what their parents and grandparents could. They long for the days when you could beat the shit out of a black man for looking at a white woman and, not only wouldn't you go to jail, but you'd probably get your neighbors to join in. They have limited capacity to appreciate that progress in the way we think about America has left those days in the dust. At least in certain areas. Hell, I'd still keep my eyes on the ground if I was a black man in Idaho.

You misunderstand, i have no real problem with what the media is saying , cause you are right freedom of speech. i understand the point of it. but dont jump on one when hundreds are saying the same thing. double standards dont work with me. this seems to be a classic case. that i guess is my main point.

if you are going to hang Imus for a racist commint then hang Jesse Jackson too, thats all.

i dont want to hang any of them, but you understand my point??

"assholitability of said speech?"
you are right, so why not Louise Farakan and others.

Like i said i think what he said was wrong, but he is not the only one spilling hate speech, so why is he the one with a target on is back? why not rappers(black or white, i dont care pick one)for all of their assholitability of said speech.
ya know. thats all i am trying to say. but the media wont do that will they? double standard.

hillery wont get a second of air time about some of her flat out hate commints, but Imus will for a off color(no pun)bad joke.

Simple. We have a long history on this continent of whites owning blacks and treating them like animals. Hundreds of years. And even after slavery was ruled illegal we had more than a hundred years of terrorism directed against blacks by whites. Any racist comment by whites come with that historical baggage. It's an attempt to remind people of their place, whether intentional on the part of the speaker or not, and taps into all that history of word and deed and action and threat and violence and rape and murder.

Racist comments by blacks do not have that historical baggage because blacks have never been in the position of absolute dominance over whites.

It's the difference between kicking up and kicking down. One is a lot more effective.

that is such a cop out answer. every race has problems with other races. that has been around for 10's of 1000's of years. hell their are other countries that are still fighting. look at the middle east and isreal(sp), look at prostents and catholics, jews and germans, irsh and english,(300) greeks and persians, etc.

that is why we are the best country in the world. the usa is the only counrty in the history of the world to free slaves by themselves. the slaves didnt have to fight for it, ya know. i dont mean that there wasnt a fight, but compaired to the other slaves owners in the history of the world, we(USA)freed them on our own will. ya understand what that means.

we stood up and said "no slaves in this country." what other country has done that before us? sheeites and sounis Iraq, still fight each other, is that what we want?
Unite Gorramit. United States of America!!!

not alot of uniting with , he owes me, ya know.

so if they keep that going, it will never end. and that will be their own doing. all of our ancestors have been some form of slave at one time or another, but you dont see me jumping up and down every time a commint is made. but it is so easy to keep it going and to still say that some how the white man is holdin the black man down and he owes us. Let it go. i have.

i am not saying forget the past, but no body has held the black man down. it is just easy to say he has been. Hell, Spain owned slaves, but i dont see any heat going that way. white people did not have a monolopy on slaves.

i dont agree with slaves, i dont want to loose that part of our history, because it is needed.

they have historical baggage because they choose to keep it. right is right and wrong is wrong, regerdless of who says it(black or white).

Gandhi comment
Clinton came under criticism in 2004 after saying that Mahatma Gandhi "ran a gas station down in Saint Louis." This comment represented a stereotyped view of South Asians living in the United States. Clinton apologized, blamed "a lame attempt at humor," and claimed that she "admired the work and life of Mahatma Gandhi and had spoken publicly about that many times." [48] Michelle Naef, administrator of the M.K. Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence said she didn't think Clinton was trying to demean Mahatma Gandhi and credited both Clintons as long having supported the Gandhi message. However, Naef said that Clinton's remarks were offensive and could be "incredibly harmful." [49]

Many towns ran their black population out in the early part of the twentieth century and have kept them out, through a variety of means, to this day.

Some of those towns had signs on the city limits, up into the 1960s and 1970s saying, "Nigger, don't let the sun set on you in X."

That's a lot more recent than the Civil War.

Freeing the slaves was an important first step in living up to the potential that is the US. Thinking that hundreds of years of institutionalization of racism that was necessary for slavery as practiced on this continent to flourish just went away with the stroke of a pen is naive.

Everyone is the hero of their own story. How do you reconcile owning another human being as property and still think of yourself as good? You create a narrative that allows you to do both. And you pass that narrative along to your children.

And we're still teaching our children the hate of our forefathers because it's easier than acknowledging that we still have a long way to go as a country.

Soup, I think there might be more to it than that, so pardon while I ramble on and try to put my finger on it. When the dominant society declares a group to be it's 'nigger' it's doing more than name-calling. They have the power to bring to bear everything it means. That's why they're called the 'dominant' group - because they dominate the lives of everyone else. So they are marking the group as unworthy, bringing to bear their group weight on the others, and inculcating their self-assigned superiority on the next generation.

It was and is and tool used to make others heel.

When minority groups use the same words they are without the implied ability to make them real.

It's not just the words, it's who uses them and the power behind the group.

BWAHAHAHAHAHA, read a history book sometime, it might do you good.
The rest of the world had or had nearly, phased it out and looked upon the colonies as a buncha immoral barbarians for still having it.

The civil war was a helluva a lot more complicated than the heavily politicized capsule version taught in public schools these days, it was primarily about economics and the distribution of power between the federal government and the states, with slavery being a mere side issue that neither side primarily gave a damn about beyond using it politically to bash the other.

That blind hoo-rah idealism of america as some kind of good-guys utopia is the kind of idiotic wishful thinking that lands us into some gawdawful messes, we're neither the best, nor the worst, and our history is full of both darkness and light, but to be blinded by that light and not remember the darkness ensures it's lessons will be forgotten and repeated.

That bein said, in order to be offended by what someone says, i'd have to first give a damn what they think, which in the case of this dweeb, not hardly.

Sure, it's a little overboard in both directions, and he should man up and apologize to them in person, but beyond that it's not any of my business if it ever was in the first place.

BUT - he chose to deliver that insult in front of a massive audience, and the fault for that is entirely his own, he wanted that publicity and he got it, that's what shock-jocks do.. if you wanna really retaliate, just ignore them, because if you give in to it, you're admitting to giving a crap what they think of you.

Me, I could care less what some pinhead I don't know and wouldn't like if I did thinks of me, and if more folks held that attitude, we wouldn't have a lot these furballs now would we ?

Just sayin...

I'm no historian, but I can think of many instances where slaves were freed without having to fight for it :

Egypt : Allowed the Hebrews to leave with Moses
England : Abolished slavery decades before America

Actually I cannot think any group of slaves in history that fought their way to freedom....Spartacus tried against the Romans, but failed.

Here's the factual history of slavery abolishment in England :
The Slavery Abolition Act (citation 3 & 4 Will. IV c. 73) was an 1833 Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom abolishing slavery throughout the British Empire.

Britain had outlawed the slave trade with the Slave Trade Act in 1807, with penalties of £100 per slave levied on British captains found importing slaves. However, this did not stop the British slave trade: If slave ships were in danger of being captured by the British navy, captains often reduced the fines they had to pay by ordering the slaves to be thrown into the sea. According to the 1844 McMulloch's Commercial Dictionary; "America abolished the slave trade at the same time as England. But not withstanding what had been done, further measures were soon discovered to be necessary. The Spanish and Portuguese continued to carry on the trade to a greater extent than ever; and British subjects did not hesitate, under cover of their flags, to become partners in their adventures."

The next step, then, was to make slavery illegal. A new Anti-Slavery Society was formed in 1823, with members including Thomas Clarkson, Henry Brougham, William Wilberforce, Thomas Fowell Buxton, Elizabeth Heyrick, Mary Lloyd, Jane Smeal, Elizabeth Pease, and Anne Knight.

They prevailed ten years later with the Slavery Abolition Act. To mollify slave owners, the British government paid compensation to owners of freed slaves, depending on the number of slaves that they had. For example, the Bishop of Exeter's 665 slaves resulted in him receiving £12,700.

[edit] The Main Points of the Slavery Abolition Act
All slaves under the age of six were to be freed immediately.
Slaves over the age of six were to remain as part slave and part free for a further four years. In that time they would have to be paid a wage for the work they did in the quarter of the week when they were "free."
The government was to provide £20 million in compensation to the slave-owners who had lost their property.

As for Egypt & the Hebrews....Pharoah Rameses had to let them go as Moses had demanded...yes God brought down some plagues on the Egyptians, but the Hebrew slaves never fought anyone. As the Hebrews were exiting Egypt the Queen hardened his heart and he sent his soldiers out after the slaves to kill them...but originally he just let them go.

Look all of the debate has been fun and all. but we are still missing the point. Imus hasnt said anything diffent then what has been said already. His commint was in a joke. I have stated that many others have said way worse and yet the media is willing to turn the other cheek as far as they are concerned. That is a stance which i think is unfair.

Think of this whole thing like this. This is an example dont put more into this then that ok.

2 women walk into a room full of men.

woman #1 says to a man, "dickhead"
woman #2 walks over to another man and says "dickhead".

all the men in to room are out-raged! but woman #1 is a blonde and #2 is a redhead. all the men like the blonde. so #2 is going to have to be fired and say she is sorry.

that is the same thing that is happing here with Imus. now my view on this is why should the redhead have to be fired, when the blonde said the same dang thing that the redhead did.

does this help bring my view of the whole Imus thing to bear.

I am not going to continue to reply on the slave commints. i cant type as fast as i think and it is such a complex topic, that my fingers hurt, haha

if you really want to continue the topic then we need to exchange phone numbers and we can talk all day about it. but unless the topic is just a few sentences then i am going to have to pass right now. i am sure i will get the commints about me bowwing out, but that is ok. that will be the person who will not call to keep it going. hahaha

I just think this whole thing is getting out of hand. "A divded house will not stand."
Unite and move on. Love your country, or get out.

that's all folks

What makes you think I or anyone else here hate it so much? Just 'cause we disagree with you doesn't mean we hate the country.

I notice no one got past the first half of that post - in fact I wrote it that way as an experiment just to see if that would be the case.

Recent events and statements from our resident wingnuts have definately convinced me they don't even actually read stuff, just skim and then bash, so imma prolly just wait for them and their horde of sock puppets to get bored, rather than waste words entertaining them.

Hey ! I read it ! I do enjoy discussing related topics though. Like the role of epithets and who uses them, why people who disagree with some posters are supposed to leave the US, and stuff like that.

But actually, I agree in the main.

That sounds like something Stephen Colbert would say, is it?

Actually, Bruce Lee said it at the beginning of Enter The Dragon.

It's based off of Kung Fu and wider Budhist Zen Philosphy, similar statements crop up all over.

But that particular one is more or less a direct Bruce Lee quote from Enter the Dragon while trying to teach the fundementals of intention to a student.
