Is it just me or is it going to be unusually tough for voters this time?

Guess I should be more specific...my first choice is a candidate I believe I could completely trust but I'm not sure would likely win. My second choice is not someone I would completely trust even though I agree with this person's stand on most (if not all) issues. The final choice is someone who would likely be the dominating candidate, and though we agree on most issues, this person seems like a sleezeball in disguise, not unlike our current presidential situation.

I'm confused. Are you talking about the Democrat Presidential race? The democratic method of voting ? Or is there some new political party....the democratic party ?

People love a happy ending. So every episode, I will explain once again that I don't like people. And then Mal will shoot someone. Someone we like. And their puppy. - Joss

I just mean that it will be tough to decide who to vote for. I'm kind of afraid that either of the two I'd most like to win the nomination will not end up being a choice for me in the long run and it'll end up being that I'm forced to vote for the Dem's version of Bush or not vote at all.

I don’t know if I’ll vote in the Democratic Primary or not. I generally don’t, at least I didn't last time, but if I do, at this point, all I can say is it will not be Hillary.

Its a really difficult choice. You have the woman you just know is Satan, the young black guy that you really like but just isn't up to the job (yet), the young white guy who you really like but just isn't up to the job (and never will be...but if you need a malpractice lawyer willing to take 60% of your settlement, he's your man), the corn-ee Governor you know can't win, the former VP who shaved his beard and wants to put your car in jail, and Dennis Kucinich.

What ever happened to the guy from Virginia (ie the liberal southern governor with Red State appeal and no intern-ational scandals)?

Not to pick too many nits, but there is no 'Democratic' party, thus, there is not Democratic Primary.

The Democrats have a primary, as do the Republicans.

Democratic is a form of Gov't. Democrats are a political PARTY

Actually Rapty the party name is The Democratic Party. For proof I offer their website http://www.democrats.org/ Democrats is the plural term for members of that party.

Well, for one, she’s a Clinton; possibly even the Clinton. But really, I’m sure that if I thought about it I could come up with savvy sociopolitical arguments that would easily compel me to believe that I’m right, but I’d have to dust off the history books and do a little googling and it’s too early for that. Technically Clinton’s not even running.

Sufficed to say, I’ve never been a big Clinton voter. I think the Clinton’s are motivated by politics not principle. I think they put on a good show, but I don’t have much confidence that they are prepared to actually fight the good fight. I think Hillary is a too polarizing a figure, and if Hillary gains the presidency we will be likely looking at 20 years of the presidency dominated by only two American families, and that just feels too hereditary.

I got words.

It's way too soon to talk about the election of 2008 in any serious manner.
The newbies from the election of 2006 ain't even tooken office yet. The Iowa caucasus, the 1st event in the primaries, are still a YEAR away.

The MSM , of course, already has it down to Hillary or Obama vs. Rudy or McCain; and the last I heard , was ready to inaugurate one of 'em, which proves how stupid the whole thing is. Way too much can happen -- there's many a slip, betwixt the cup and the lip.

Any one of the 4 main contenders could get caught in a drug bust, fall in the bathtub and die, or tell a bad joke and be OVER-- just like THAT.

That's because you only listen to right-wing morons whose talking point straight from Rove is to always refer to the Democratic Party as the (misnomered) "Democrat" party, because the term Democratic plays too well in the polls.

I'm just amazed that you people think there's really any substantive difference between the two. They're all oligarchic megalomaniacs who want the reins of power so they can force their version of utopia down our throats. They only really disagree on the hot-button stuff.

There's a couple, but any major party politico has to 'toe the party line' to some degree, and the ones that don't tend to get sandbagged and marginalized by their own party.

You want your rights as advertised, you'd be better off with Ron Paul.

Look him up, check his voting record and his history, you'll see what I mean, he's like a second coming of the founding fathers, I think you'd like him.

I think this the the perfect time to discuss Democratic candidates. The Swift-Boating has already begun so there's lots of time to deal with it. By primary time - even better election time - people will be disgusted with the jack-a**es who do that kind of sh*t and will win even more votes to the Democratic party.

And do you not see the massive tradeoffs for those lower taxes? My point is that pick either party you want: they're power hungry elitists who've taken the power away from the people and concentrated it in the hands of the wealthy few. No matter which party you pick, the net effect is the same, gay marriage, firearms ownership and taxes notwithstanding.

That's a pretty damn funny assessment of the gang so far...I was going to go thru the list myself with disdained mocking, but I will cede this to yours.

My opinion on the outcome of the Democrat nomination is that over the next 16 months Hillary & Obama will pull way ahead of the crowd, and by the time their convention is held in August 2008 Hillary will have it locked up.

BUT....It's gonna be a real blast watching them all attempt to DESTROY eachother in the process...just like they always do....destroy eachother so much that they weaken the final candidate for the Presidential election in Novemebr 2008....New Hampshire & Iowa in early 2008 will weed out the wannabees, but psychos like 'Lil Denny Kucinich will always be there telling America that HE and HE alone can save the country....and then another fun part of politics is when the Dems are done ripping eachother apart and they have a candidate...then they go after the Republican nominee...and everyone hugs, kisses, and makes up...as if to say All those horrible things I've been calling you for 18 months don't matter...help support me to defeat the evil Repubs. I'm still waiting to see the other "regulars" declare their candidacy like :
Al Sharpton
Carol Mosley Braun
Wesley Clark
Joe Lieberman

Gore
Daschle
Biden

yah, the democrats are notorious for pushing anti-crime esque legislation, designed to inherintly threaten(among other things) gun rights.. but my question is where the hell were the republicans during Katrina, when Fema went into N.O and literally took peoples guns away!?? under any other circumstance, a federal authority marching in and seizing property and guns would be seen as a threat(including to the constitution). thats our land, not the federal governments, and they had no right to do that, and to have the gall to steal our weapons?!; we should have never given in to the pressure, despite the disaster of katrina.. because that sets a dangerous precedent IMO. this was also the danger of giving homeland security and FEMA so much authority after 9/11, now they have us by the balls, to where in the advent of an emergency, your constitutional(God given) rights no longer apply, and the federal government owns you, plain and simple

The issue I'm most passionate about is abortion. I am 30 year old straight woman who does not want to have children, so naturally, it's personal for me. I believe it's a woman's right to decide what happens to her body, her child, and no one else's.

So, that's where I'm at. I'd like a candidate who's passionately pro-choice. Someone who will work harder than Bush to bring the troops home and find and destroy Bin Laden. Beyond that, I'd (naively) just like someone trustworthy...or as close as we can get to that. Basically, someone who won't screw over us and everyone else in order to make himself (or herself) and their friends richer, while the poor stay poor.

As for gun rights, I'm kind of in the middle about that one. I agree that a well-trained, responsible adult should have the right to own a gun for protecting themselves and their loved ones, although I could never own one myself. But I do have an overwhelming fear of the accidents that have happened as a result of them and
I also support animal rights, and think killing animals for anything other than survival is sick, twisted and wrong.

Ron Paul is a wild card, thats for sure... hes not your typical corporate elite backed manchurian candidate. i say forget whoever the democrats have running, we need to focus our efforts on thee most proconstitutional candidate running.. and that is mr. Paul by far. we'll need all the grassroots support as possible if we want to steal the election away from the 'machine' of the NWO elitists. the democratic party is too indoctrinated with socialistic principles, regardless of the candidate, they will ultimately be controlled by the party anyways. on the other hand the republican party is branching apart, and a healthy number have become disgusted, and are dissassociating themselves with the neocon takeover from within; and hopefully returning to what is now called their 'paleoconservative' roots

either way we need to stop toting any part lines and go for proconstitution.. because Bush has stacked the supreme court with a bunch of federalists, so that key issues facing America in the future can be fashioned according to their panAmerican/empirical view. we need a proconstitutional president to uphold the constitution, and veto and apply pressure on these forces.. otherwise a NWO will be ushered in

Gebhart
Gore
Daschle
Biden
Kennedy
etc etc

Hell..I want that stage in August 2008 just all filled up( like in 2004)up with these self-centered, do-nothing millionnaire politicians!....great entertainment!

Hey, I thought I was the old hippie turned cynic - but you guys sure know how to play the "they're all a bunch of crooks anyway so why bother" card. You may be right, yet, .... however, botched the system may be it's my belief that it's still up to individual citizens - you, me and the folks next door - to step up, speak up and not shut up. So whether I agree with you or not, if I don't take a stand (whatever that means to me) then I might as well just give up and accept what comes and I have no right to complain.

Now and then there are those little windows in time when it's actually possible to take some action and make changes that matter. Now might be that time. The window opens and closes and the outcome is uncertain. We are human, we try, we succeed, we fail, we start over. That's all there is for us to do.

For the record, not all Tiggers are bad:

The classic South Park episode had it right. You are usually stuck with voting between a giant douche and a turd sandwich. I usually go with the lesser of two evils. I love being an independent.

"Mr. Speaker, my subject today is whether America is a police state. If we are, what are we going to do about it? Most police states, surprisingly, come about through the democratic process with majority support. The masses are easily led to believe that security and liberty are mutually exclusive, and demand for security far exceeds that for liberty. Our government already keeps close tabs on just about everything we do and requires official permission for nearly all of our activities. One might take a look at our Capitol for any evidence of a police state. We see: barricades, metal detectors, police, military soldiers at times, dogs, ID badges required for every move, vehicles checked at airports and throughout the Capitol. The people are totally disarmed, except for the police and the criminals. But worse yet, surveillance cameras in Washington are everywhere to ensure our safety. Like gun control, people control hurts law-abiding citizens much more than the law-breakers. Centralized control and regulations are required in a police state. Not only do we need a license to drive, but we also need special belts, bags, buzzers, seats and environmentally dictated speed limits. Or a policeman will be pulling us over to levy a fine, and he will be toting a gun for sure. Let's reject the police state."

OUCH ! painfully stupid and true.

NM Gov. Bill Richardson just threw his hat into the ring, and I think he might fit that description.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070121/ap_on_el_pr/richardson2008

It's a long shot bid, but he's got lots of experience as energy secretary and a diplomat, but he's not very well-known among voters in Iowa & NH. Plus governors tend to do well in presidential campaigns, having had executive experience dealing with nuts and bolts governance issues. He's not a preening peacock like many of the senators, he's a worker and doesn't take himself too seriously. Plus, some pundit on TV made a good point this morning: Castro is going to die very soon, causing a foreign policy crisis 90 miles off Florida's coast around the time of the 2008 election. A Hispanic candidate may be uniquely positioned to take advantage of that situation.

Funny thing. He's been on MY short list for a while.

My theory:
1. Being Vice Prez doesn't qualify you to step up. Vps aren't chosen for much of a reason, usually, traditionally, to bring 1 state to the electoral college as a favorite son, or to forge a unification ticket.

2. Senators don't do well. Before JFK, weren't many elected Prez. Lotta reasons why, many of them applied to John Kerrey: elitism, air of superiority, aloof, impersonal attitude.

3. Which leaves big city mayors and governors. Dem mayors with name recognition got it because of scandals, controversies or problems: Jerry Brown, Gavin Newsome, Ray Nagin, on and on. ANd looking over the Dem governors, eliminating the unfamous, ethnic, regional, or female, Richardson was the one I came up with.
And him being a Latino ( I hope tha'ts the correct term ), is probably a plus.

SOUPCATCHER

Bill Richardson is one of our transplanted Californians. It's all part of an insidious plot for the Golden State to take back this country, one position at a time. A plot I wholeheartedly endorse, by the way. We're sick and tired of social conservatives tapping out the rhythm (as if they had any ).

Oh, and it looks like John Kerry won't be attending the dance this time. I was actually hoping he'd stick around. The mention of his name is guaranteed to set the wingnuts heads spinning and I'm all for wingnut indigestion.

Let's try a few more head-popping names. Ted Kennedy. Hillary Clinton. Bill's penis. And, the coup de grace, Speaker Pelosi.

On a more meta level...

You know, I've found I'm a lot more snarky now that the Democratic Party is in control of the House of Representatives. Not overbrimming with hopefulness. But not filled with an overwhelming sense of, "WTF are the Republicans screwing up now?" In retrospect, it's been a painful six years. Still have dumbfuck in the Oval. So there's that.

Well, at least Kerry will be out of the mix. He's decided to not run.
