I voted a few hours ago and want to remind my fellow Americans that a vote for a Democrat is a vote for the values of John Kerry, who thinks that the men and women serving in Iraq are stupid. I'll let you make up your own mind on who the majority of U.S servicemen and servicewomen support.

All true,

I voted for republicans, but not because john kerry is an idiot. He wasn't running. Democrats annoyed me with their overcampaigning and their complete failure to produce a workable plan that would attact businesses, promote peace and prosperity and salvage my remaining civil liberties. The main message I got from democrats this election was:
Give us the Ring of Power... We wants IT!

You voted REPUBLICAN because they are your DEFAULT? THAT's a good reason !

Now for a serious question - you know that republicans have serious ethics problems. Even being a majority in both houses with a republican president and the power to hold or withold hearings was not enough to save a large number of republicans from prosecution - and conviction. Why do you continue to support the den of thieves?

I voted. The place was emtpy. 1 other lady voted while I was there. It took less than 10 minutes from start to finish. I voted for 4 Libertarians, 1 Democrat, and a handful of Republicans.

It's funny to hear of all these problems across the country that some are having at the polling places. Voting was already easy, but now w/ these touchscreen machines, a turnip could do it. If you've ever successfully used an ATM, you're overqualified to vote. It's absurdly simple.

Just got back from the registrar's office. I'm a permanent absentee voter but I like to drop off my ballot on the day of the election. Helps me get a tiny feel for the general level of excitement. I happened to hit the place during the lunch hour and they were doing a very steady business.

Also, I'm pretty sure I just made the cutting room floor. On my way out the door a reporter from the local news station asked me if the mayor's race had increased my desire to vote in this election. When I told him we live in an unincorporated area and don't get to vote in that race he immediately stopped recording and walked away. Does that count against my fifteen minutes?

No time for a long post... voted this morning, standard issue paper/opscan balloting - they had ONE touchscreen and everyone avoided it like it was covered in HIV - I guess they had to provide the option, but no one would even go near it.

Spent/spending the rest of the day covering for the local dept, to run off any goons/ghouls/intimidators from either party - and preventing sign-spamming on the property of unwilling victims.

Politics is a bit less fun than a root canal, but little to no chicanery here today, guess they save that for further downtown.

I voted with Inkavote. I really like it. We used to have the infamous punch card system before 2000, but by 2004 the punchards were gone, gone, gone.

Not too many people at our polling place but (a) I live in a wealthy neighborhood and (2) I got to the polls about 30 minutes after they opened.

We had a LOT of ballot initiatives and bond measures this year. I had to study the information package for a couple of days before I could figure them out!

I used to be realy excited about the ballot initiative process until I saw a couple of real clunkers pass. The so-called Three-Strikes Law (Polly's Law) was fine in theory, but badly written. Most of the legislators knew is was junk, but it had built up so much steam in public opinion that everybody was afraid to point out some rather serious flaws.

I've also seen problems with designating taxes for specific purposes. (Bonds, IMHO, are a different story.) The problem with that is the state fiscal situation changes, needs change, priorities change very quickly- for example Enron changed the CA budgetary landscape in just two months. That kind of micromanagement really thwarts effective governance.

Always! Ok I forgot one year that I would be out of town on Election Day when it was too late to cast an absentee ballot, but other than that I've always voted and take it seriously. My state is one of the few that is requiring a paper trail of the ballots so we went from electronic machines to a piece of paper where you fill in circles. It felt like I was taking a test (especially since I vote at a school) but it is good to know there is a paper record of my vote.

$250,000 Reward For Evidence of Election Fraud

Quote:

Washington, Nov. 7 -- MoveOn.org Political Action is offering a $250,000 reward for new material evidence leading to a felony conviction for an organized effort of partisan voter suppression or electronic voting fraud.

Throughout the day accusations of election fraud and voter suppression incidents have been flooding into state and federal authorities throughout the country. In Virginia, the FBI has launched a criminal investigation into charges of voter suppression. In 20 Congressional districts, NRCC robocalls appearing to come from Democrats harassed voters with repeated calls in an apparently coordinated campaign to suppress the vote.

Are you SURE it was Democrats marching around???? I got involved in a sitaution where a supposed Democratic campaign worker was standing in front campaign HQ handing out pix of an obviously retarded kid with the phrase VOTING FOR (REPUBLICAN) IS LIKE WINNING THE SPECIAL OLYMPICS- YOU MAY WIN BUT YOU'RE STILL RETARDED. ROCKETJOCK

This discussion reminds me of a Robert Heinlein story, a non-sf humor piece about a local election in post-WWII middle America. It was, among other things, a catalog of dirty pre-election PR tricks.

It culminated with the underdog side in a machine-controlled city countering a series of dirty tricks by the incumbent with a few dirty tricks of their own. The one that stick in my minds is hiring a bunch of bums out of the railyard (that's how old the story is; you could still call them "bums"...), feeding them each a limburger-and-sardine sandwich, handing each a pile of leaflets for the incumbent, and sending them out for some door knocking and up-close discussion with the voting public. "Listen pal, you wouldn't like what would happen if this district doesn't vote right, not with your car parked right out on the street like that, you get my drift?"

Myself, I don't see much difference between the Republicrats and the Demagogs, but I voted today, oh yes. Got to renew my "Right To Bitch" license, Y'know.

And that's the bottom line. If you don't vote, buddy, you ain't got a right to bitch.

First time I found this thread. I was hoping to read a bit about people's politics on this site.
Someone from another site I'm on sent me this link which is a report on voting problems - machines and human - rather interesting.
It's a documentary called "Hacking Democracy."
I couldn't get the link pasted in but if you cut and paste it works.

I heard a report that more people are voting absentee bc they are concerned about their votes being counted correctly. I voted manually by ballot - partly because the lines for the machine were so long and partly bc I'm not sure I trust them.

And yes, what how we vote in the US does affect the rest of the world. Guess we really all are connected.

DREAMTROVE

Actually,

I went and read the online literature for each candidate for each position, including the real lunatics like the Rent is Too Damn High party.

Then I weighed who had a clear plan, experience, and ability, and would not create boondoggle govt in my face, and who might actually bring jobs to this area. The winner was usually the republican, but like auraptor, there were a couple libertarian votes in there.

Clearly, the democrats motivated their own mindless hoards (the 'I always pull the blue level' crowd) - by witness of this fact, check out Hillary's vote total, or Spitzer's. (my local dems call him the 'police state' vote.)

Anyway, Democrats won everything. Now, for everyone on Team Blue there is a brief feeling of euphoria because you beat the bad guy. Not the globalists, Bush et al. the regular run of the mill local republicans. In fact, odds favor that you kicked a moderate republican out, rather than a core bushy.

That feeling will fade, and reality will set in, "you" didn't win, your team won, just as "you" don't win against the Mets, the Yankees win against the mets... and in time we'll see exactly what it is they've won.

Either they democrats do have a plan, and they enact that plan, and it succeeds in helping the economy, recovering world opinion, etc. Or they don't, in which case, there will probably be a deadlock, unless they impeach Bush, which they should. Of course, an impeachment of Bush will never go through unless they are willing to make a deal with the republicans to have a neutral figure such as Powell take the helm. (He's served in both republican and democratic administration, I guess that makes him neutral)

I'm naturally a little uneasy with the results, I think that a lot of good people, with no real connection to the president, suffered because of hatred of Bush - but I'm willing to give the democrats the benefit of the doubt and see if they can pull something together.

Kerry is Bushes' Skull & Boner cousin. Both are related to Vlad the Impaler, aka Count Dracula, and Countess dracula Elizabeth Bathory, convicted of 600 ritual murders to drink the blood of female virgins (as seen this Halloween on History Channel). At least Kerry didn't dodge the draft, go AWOL, disobey a direct order for a drug test and get demoted from pilot to mail clerk, and get sentenced to six months extra duty for desertion. Kerry was paid a $51-million bribe ("leftover campaign contributions") to take a dive and refuse recounts in 2004.

Here's Bush Jr's homosexual pick for running his 9/11 Commission coverup, who loved to RAPE (sodomize) US soldiers in Vietnam Wars:

Quote:

"In Haig's presence, (Sir Heinz "Henry") Kissinger (Knight of the British Empire) referred pointedly to military men as 'dumb, stupid animals to be used' as pawns for foreign policy. Kissinger often took up a post outside the doorway to Haig's office and dressed him down in front of the secretaries for alleged acts of incompetence with which Haig was not even remotely involved. Once when the Air Force was authorized to resume bombing of North Vietnam, the planes did not fly on certain days because of bad weather. Kissinger assailed Haig. He complained bitterly that the generals had been screamin for the limits to be taken off but that now their pilots were afraid to go up in a little fog. The country needed generals who could win battles, Kissinger said, not good briefers like Haig."

"On another occasion, when Haig was leaving for a trip to Cambodia to meet with Premier Lon Nol, Kissinger escorted him to a staff car, where reporters and a retinue of aides waited. As Haig bent to get into the automobile, Kissinger stopped him and began polishing the single star on his shoulder. 'Al, if you're a good boy, I'll get you another one,' he said."

DT,

More than anything I hope there are bona fide investigations into the Bush administration, something that would NEVER happen under republican rule. So that's one thing a democratic majority in both houses could get you - justice. At least an accounting. And that's worth something.

Unfortunately, for Democrats to get anywhere fixing the country back up, they'd have to have a 2/3 majority in both houses. Even IF they had a simple majority in both (which may or may not happen), anything they might want to do would get vetoed by ... Bush.

"I think that a lot of good people, with no real connection to the president, suffered because of hatred of Bush" Voting in national elections really is about national politics. You can't make your national decisions on local interests. Local interests are what local politicians are for. And mid-terms are generally thought as referenda on the existing administration. So it's no surprise.

"democrats - mindless hoards" Wow. You sound bitter.

I just read something today that reminded me of this comment, AURaptor. Jefferson will be in a run-off election because he didn't get a majority of the vote. Some of the left blogs are throwing their support behind one of the challengers, Karen Carter. You probably don't feel like going over to DailyKos to read the entire entry but here is an excerpt:
Quote:

excerpted from http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2006/11/8/22911/0286
It seems that the elections never end on election day anymore. There are several recounts afoot and a run-off in Texas. There's also a run-off in Louisiana, where state Rep. Karen Carter will face off against corrupt U.S. Rep. William Jefferson in LA-02.

This race matters because we need to send a strong message, a message that the Democratic Party won't tolerate corruption on either side of the aisle. Come January, we're finally going to take back the House. But before we do, we need to clean house first. And that's why the Swing State Project, DailyKos and MyDD are officially endorsing Karen Carter in her runoff on Dec. 9th.

...

If you want to donate money to Rep. Carter's campaign, AURaptor, you can go to this ActBlue page: http://www.actblue.com/page/bluemajority?refcode=DKosLA-02

Looks like she picked up about $500 in the first hour. If she's going to seriously challenge someone who takes $100,000 bribes it's going to take a little more than that.

On a broader note, I remember you complaining about Cynthia McKinney earlier this year. I'm sure you appreciated the Democratic voters in her district knocking her out in the primary and replacing her with a much better Democratic candidate.
