John Kerry Belittles U.S. Troops?

Kerry said something he meant, didn't take it back in front of the people he said it to, he knew what he said, he wasn't posessed, and he only afterwards realizes that he had an idiot moment. But only because of the backlash.

If people had agreed with him, he'd be telling everyone how he thought up that part of his speech while shaving, or eating eggs for breakfast.

Here's the problem- any politician only says what they think people want to hear, and are only sorry for what other people hold them accountable for.

I can't stand smarmy know-it-alls in either party.

And the Military doesn't target poor people, it's just that someone who has had to work for something values it more than someone who made it because of [NOT DADDY'S MONEY], but probably their great-great-great grandfather's who might have been a thief and a liar, but was maybe at least a hard-working thief and liar...

A lot of kids who have everything when they grow up don't appreciate things like some people who grew up poor. Still, a lot of people who come from well off families join I've noticed.

Maybe to "prove something" whatever that means. I don't care why they are there, as long as they do their job as best they can.

Also, every man thought about joining the military when he was a boy. we all did it. The guys who point their finger and say:

"See! I'm glad I didn't! We shouldn't be there!!"

Probably don't realize that the guys who were actually in Europe, the Pacific Islands, Korea, Vietnam, and Iraq sure wished they were somewhere else at least once when they were there, and more than anyone looking from the sidelines ever would or could-
but they went anyway, and they keep fighting anyway.

If you want to defend Kerry, fine. If you think the Military is made of people who aren't as smart as you, fine. But admit they are braver than you. Those kids deserve it, and your not agreeing doesn't make it any less true.

Throw Rush [and] Kerry in a f'ing pit for all I care.

The LARGEST army on the Earth? That'd belong to China, I do believe. Would be nice if that leader took more interest in such matters.

Maybe I am the only one. But I didn't think what Kerry said was so bad. Was it a dumb thing to do, politically? Yes. Was it inaccurate or demeaning? I don't think so.

"Stuck in Iraq." It's an undesirable outcome, stuck in a job that sucks. If you don't study and work hard, you'll get stuck in a job you hate. Soldiering in a war is one of the most miserable jobs in the world. Kerry's a veteran. He knows. Right now, many college students perceive Iraq as one of the worst jobs to get stuck in. So he used a relevant metaphor to make his point.

Now imagine if he said, "If you don't study, you'll get stuck at McDonald's." Does this mean he has no respect for the multi-billion dollar international corporation? Does this mean he believes everyone in the McDonald's corporation is uneducated and unskilled? Obviously not. Does it mean he is demeaning all McDonald's employees? I don't think so. It means he is using the negative stereotype of an unpleasant job to make his point.

But of course, it is part and parcel of politics to be crucified for little mistakes. He chose the profession; he's paying the price.

We may have just witnessed the end of what was expected to be John Kerry's encore bid for the White House. Chances are the former Swift boat captain will not be reporting for duty as the Democratic nominee in two years. And for that, the country can be grateful.

And what could be more injurious and insulting than Don Rumsfeld’s response to criticism that he sent our troops off in haste and unprepared: Hey, you go to war with the army you’ve got — get over it.

What could possibly be more injurious and insulting to our men and women in uniform than to send them off to war in Iraq without any coherent postwar plan for political reconstruction there, so that the U.S. military has had to assume not only security responsibilities for all of Iraq but the political rebuilding as well?

There you go with the facts again, Rue.

The die hard Republican faithful needed this hyped story like an addict needs a fix. Look at how they perked up in this thread alone. They NEED to believe that John Kerry hates the troops. They NEED to believe that the man the Democratic Party ran for President two years ago absolutely despises our men and women in uniform. They NEED to believe that a prominent Senator from Massachusetts wants all our troops to die. And they NEED to believe that the entire Democratic Party feels the same way.

It's not anything rational. If you actually think about these claims, they're asinine. The overwhelming majority (and I mean overwhelming as in as close to unity as you're going to get) in this country support the troops. We may have a variety of ideas on what that means, but that is a different thing altogether. No politician could ever get elected in this country running on a platform of hating the troops. It's just not going to happen. There is no factual evidence for the hard core Republicans belief that Democrats hate the troops. Zip. Zero. Zilch.

This misguided belief is about one thing and one thing only: making it easier to support the Republican party. If you believe that one party in a two party system hates the troops then there's no way in hell you'll ever support them. The Republican followers can sleep soundly at night voting for a party that has disastrously run this country off a cliff. The Republican followers can feel good about voting for a party that is actively working against their own interests.

They need this. Otherwise they'd have to think.

Excellent point. I believe, last I checked, the largest army belonged to Russia, but I believe that now you would be correct. It must be China.

I'm not sure I would want *these* leaders to take their kind of interest in it, but I would certainly be happier if they had at least bothered to position defensive fleets in and around Korea and Taiwan.

When the administration decided to roll over re: taiwan, I was stunned. It was almost as if someone had attacked Alaska, and the govt. had chosen not to respond.

So, yes, sure, even with the proven level of bad judgment we've seen in the last two administrations, I would still be happier if they took an interest in stopping Chinese communist expansion.

My own pet theory is that Bush, like Clinton, is letting the commies set his China policy.
