Troops battle 10-foot marijuana plants

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20061013/od_nm/marijuana_dc

Canadian troops fighting Taliban militants in Afghanistan have stumbled across an unexpected and potent enemy -- almost impenetrable forests of 10-feet-high marijuana plants.

General Rick Hillier, chief of the Canadian defense staff, said on Thursday that Taliban fighters were using the forests as cover. In response, the crew of at least one armored car had camouflaged their vehicle with marijuana.

"The challenge is that marijuana plants absorb energy, heat very readily. It's very difficult to penetrate with thermal devices ... and as a result you really have to be careful that the Taliban don't dodge in and out of those marijuana forests," he said in a speech in Ottawa.

"We tried burning them with white phosphorous -- it didn't work. We tried burning them with diesel -- it didn't work. The plants are so full of water right now ... that we simply couldn't burn them," he said.

Even successful incineration had its drawbacks.

"A couple of brown plants on the edges of some of those (forests) did catch on fire. But a section of soldiers that was downwind from that had some ill effects and decided that was probably not the right course of action," Hillier said dryly.

One soldier told him later: "Sir, three years ago before I joined the army, I never thought I'd say 'That damn marijuana'."

Ok, the soldiers camouflaged their vehicle with weed, and got high trying to burn it. That's so awesome.

Could they use a corn field combine or something to harvest .. I mean level.. the plants? It would make amazing mulch on the poppy fields. Or they could set it aside until it was dry and more combustible.
It's a heckuva way to pacify the locals, I'd bet.

Has anyone considered consulting with US municipal authorities to see how they take care of confiscated pot patches? Oregon and California spring to mind as good places to start looking for recommendations.

So, who had the bright idea to try lighting the fire on the drier plants?

I doubt you've seen it, but a comedy show over here about a news station called Drop The Dead Donkey had a scene near identical to this, Damien Day one of the field reporters was doing a report on troops burning Canabis, it went much the same way.

I'll look for a video of it, but if you go to the following site:
http://www.hattrick.com/
shows->comedy->drop the dead donkey there's a video snapshot of Damien Day in action.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20061220/ap_on_re_la_am_ca/mexico_drugs
LAZARO CARDENAS, Mexico - Soldiers trying to seize control of one Mexico's top drug-producing regions found the countryside teeming with a new hybrid marijuana plant that can be cultivated year-round and cannot be killed with pesticides.

"These plants have been genetically improved," army Gen. Manuel Garcia told a handful of journalists allowed to accompany soldiers on a daylong raid of some 70 marijuana fields. "Before we could cut the plant and destroy it, but this plant will come back to life unless it's taken out by the roots."

The new plants, known as "Colombians," mature in about two months and can be planted at any time of year, meaning authorities will no longer be able to time raids to coincide with twice-yearly harvests

Apparently these are midget zombie plants that can rise from the dead.
