It's all over the news so anyone flying probobly knows this, but there are HUGE delays on lots of international flights and massive restrictions on hand luggage, *especially* flying into or out of the UK.

Apparently the UK Police stopped a plot to blow up aircraft mid-air using liquid explosives disguised in drink bottles and smuggled on to flights as hand luggage. They're checking ~everything~ and there's a very, very small list of what you're allowed to bring on to a plane as hand luggage (in clear plastic bags). Everything else has to go in the hold.

In general, expect long delays, avoid international flights for the next while if you can and best of luck. Stay safe!

AURAPTOR

America loves a winner!

Newsies said the crowds at Hartsfield Int'l Airport here in ATL were horrific early this a.m., but as of mid-day, all was normal again. Lines which had backed up through baggage claim and all the way out the front doors to the street had evaporated to next to nothing. Virtually no waiting at all. Folks learn to adapt, adjust and roll w/ the punches.....at least in the short term.

People love a happy ending. So every episode, I will explain once again that I don't like people. And then Mal will shoot someone. Someone we like. And their puppy. - Joss

I hear no liquids or gels allowed and long delays. Is the story true? I've heard it may not be as its been reported.

I can see it now. Everyone has to relinquish their toothpaste, deodorant, and shampoo. That is going to be one stinky crowd.

Yep, no liquid or gels in carry-on unless it's baby formula or prescription medicine. All the shampoo and contact solution and the like has to be put in a checked bag (I'm pretty sure, anyway, I just know they're not allowed on the plane with you)
Reportedly there were a few different chemicals that were going to be mixed while on the plane, then detonated by remote. The plot was foiled before it even started, but it's made authorites a mite jumpy.

Yeesh, no books? That would make for a hellish flight. Good thing I'm not planning to fly anywhere anytime soon.

You can buy things in the duty free shops the other side of security and take them on, but it means you have to read the entire book on the flight, or buy it again on the way back to finish it...

I'm more worried about not having my MP3 player on the way, no tunes for eight hours

Well, and who knows if a book from the airport would be any good? Surely they could check the book by a quick flip of the pages? And an iPod is tiny! Where's the possibility for terrorism in that? Surely the usual "please turn it on" thing would... Oh, never mind, they're not gonna let up.

Ker-ching!!!

Seriously - according to the BBC website you can't even do this on UK-US flights. Note that for long-haul flights Heathrow and Gatwick have a secondary (post-shopping-mall) security check at each gate, before the seating area.

A transatlantic flight without a book, iPod and noise cancelling headphones sounds like cruel and unusual punishment to me. I wonder what the "air rage" incidence is like at the moment?

I guess you'd have to go with authors you like, or get a list of books? Personally I ussually just grab a couple of books off the shelf and go on instinct so to speak, ussually I don't get steered to wrong, except with the Dan Brown books.

It would be quite easy to turn an IPod or similar into an explosive, but a book?

What do they think your going to do take on a copy of the Communist Manifesto and take over the plane with furious political thought?

I hadn't noticed that. Pretty brilliant since the flight I'm going on in a fourtnight is UK to the US.

Perhaps I'll practice some Chi Kung or something...
