I've been watching season five of angel and it's beginning to pall. I need something new. Anyone got any suggestions? Dark, twisty fantasy or sci-fi, newish, with complex complicated plots and characters, like firefly, buffy, farscape, in that vein. What's worth buying on DVD? Also, should I wait on buying Dvd's? Is blu ray or hd-dvd hitting the market sometime soon?

On DVD, and worth buying, is Dead Like Me. One of the greatest shows ever, cancelled for no reason by Showtime so that they could put the show 'Fat Actress' on the air (which was nearly instantly cancelled). My second favorite show ever, after Firefly. Concept is a young girl dies, and finds herself recruited into the ranks of Grim Reapers, who are really just normal working folks who hang out at a diner while they wait for their next reaps. Had Mandy Patinkin in it, Jasmine Guy, and a whole bunch of "hey I've seen him before"'s.

If you haven’t gotten into the reimagined “Battlestar Galactica” yet, I recommend checking out the first season on DVD (it’s worth buying, but if you can rent it you might go with that first to try it out).

“Dark, twisty sci-fi with complex characters and plots” is a good description of BSG, as far as I’m concerned. So if that's what you're after, "Battlestar Galactica" has the sci-fi angle covered.

I agree with StakeTheLurk, BSG is your best bet.

But seeing as we're in the 'Real World' forum, best stick with a show that more closely reflects our real world, and that would be, of course, Dark Angel.
Dark, twisty and complicated? That's DA all over.

Its not ‘newish’ but try Space: Above and Beyond. Its like BSG meets Full Metal Jacket...

The new Battlestar Galactica is really good and it should hook you in very quickly.

Start with the miniseries, and then move on to season One. By then you will be hooked completly.

Just to clarify, the reimagined “Battlestar Galactica” miniseries can be purchased or rented separate from the first season (though it may be hard to find it that way, I dunno), but it is also included in the R1 DVD set for Season One of BSG if you just wanted to get it all at once.
