In the Big Damn Pilot, in the middle there, Dobson shoots Kaylee and there's a big standoff. Jayne, among others, is gonna kill Dobson, slowly, for shooting Kaylee. But Book has one of Dobson's guns and stops him, until disarmed by Zoe.
SO here's the question: Anybody get a good look at that gun? Can anybody identify it? Is it for real? Looks like a Prop-Master 9mm Fake to me, like something I would have assembled out of pipe fittings I found in the garage when I was a kid, a fat tubular barrel and a fat tubular handle with no trigger mechanism, ejector port or moving parts. Or is it supposed to be some kind of phaser weapon ray gun?

The Dobson pistol that Book takes from him is a Spanish Astra 400 chambered for 9mm Largo.

I got it in my head to blow up the picture in the Firefly Companion of Dobson's Astra 400 and just build the thing from scratch.
Eh, what the heck.
If it looked like crap I'd just throw it out and move on.
Well! I was so pleased with the way it was going, I bought real Astra 400 grips for it.
It's not screen accurate perfect but I'm really pleased with the way it is coming along.

I feel sure that few Firefly collections have Dobson's Astra and mine is even more unique because it is made by me.

The Dobson collection as of now:

I really should just break down and buy a replica of Dobson's third pistol,
after I find out what it was, of course.
Both travel documents books are someone else's work.
The passport is from the Browncoat Ball in Philadelphia,
the travel papers book was thoughtfully included in with another purchase from a 76th member.

The Astra and Vektor, muzzle on:

My whole collection thread is here:

Thanx muchly. Gonna hafta look at that scene again, a little more closely, now that I know what I'm lookin' at. In my mind, it looked even sleeker, and the barrel fatter. But I believe you.

Yeah, check out these images:

(There are two shots of Dobson holding the Astra.)

It depends on the angle of the image, but the picture in the book is of the actual stunt casting,
and one of the pictures in the IMFDB is of a real Astra.

For them as are interested, the 2011 Browncoat Ball in Rhode Island is hosting a prop museum.
http://browncoatball.com/2011/schedule/prop-museum/
A major collector of original Firefly props will be providing the highlight of the museum,
and I'll be bringing a major portion of my Replica collection, as well.

Should be a wonderful chance to check out some cool stuff
and talk about the way props enhanced the show;
and how some collectors are building their own little pieces of the 'verse.

Damn, it's a Long walk from California to Rhode Island, but maybe if I start now, I could make it. It would be worth it...
