Okay, folks, the previous Out of Character commentary thread just got too full and was getting difficult to load, so I'm starting the next one now.

This thread will contain general out of character discussion, as well as direction, commentary, and story arc information from the directors. If you're one of the actors, please check this thread before posting a move to the in-character RP thread.

If you need a refresher of what went before, you can reference the OOC6 here:
http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=17&t=3713

...and the Chat Room here:
http://www.fireflyfans.net/fireflychat.asp

Access the latest story thread here:

RECAP As of 02:15 PM EST

Serenity is sitting in the boonies, hatches closed, waiting to take off.

MAL & WASH: on the Bridge. MAL just got handed a bunch of money by SLIGHT as he was coming upstairs. WASH is getting ready to flip the three switches and take off.

ZOE, JAYNE, SLIGHT: Cargo bay, getting it configured for the cargo. SLIGHT plans to get off the ship soon and has paid his debts to MAL.

SIMON, INARA, ROWAN: In or near the Infirmary. SIMON has a sinus headache, ROWAN a split head, and INARA is starting to run low on 'the milk of human kindness'.

DAMON: Sacked out in the port shuttle

THORNE: on the port catwalk, having just shown DAMON the way to the shuttle. He's heading for the cargo bay.

KAYLEE: On the way to or in the engine room, muttering about buttinskis.

RIVER: Around somewhere

BOOK: in his room reading a...

NISKA: Loose in the boonies, dodging snakes

This look about right to everyone?

Shouldn't take too long to get to the Valley, about an hour, take a little time for cargo loading and for THORNE to visit his old home, and then rip-roaring adventure can begin.

Oh, yeah. Early and Saffron...Reavers. Wait...when did we bring Saffron in? (must review). Wanna try and recruit a Saffron, let someone double up, or just swap out her lines? (assuming she's not some reaver's dinner and dress belt by now.)

I'll have to get home to check out the color tag file as my firewall at work blocks AOL.

Succatash did it in one of his last posts as Early ~ he was already on the Reavers' ship. It went something like:
Quote:

Early's turn:
Early eats his raw meat without wondering what it is. He suddenly hears excited Reavers jabbering, and the cries of a helpless woman. Reaver Scouts are bringing a captured human female on board.

Jubil Early, now half-Reaver, crowds closer to the female captive, and his stomach groans with hunger. "Fresh meat," thinks Early.

The woman is put into a cage. A mean-looking Reaver chases everyone away. But a few minutes later, when no one is looking, Early approaches her. Her skirt is in rags, and her blouse is torn, exposing one breast. It is fairly large sized.

Early notices the sleeves are too long and it doesn't fit right in the shoulders. Early decides that the blouse isn't "fairly large sized" after all, but Extra Large Sized.

"Your blouse is Extra-large sized," says Early. It's big, much too big for you."

"Are you a Reaver?" the girl asks.

"Reefer? Well, no, but I have a mighty bong."

"I said, Reaver, are you a Reaver?" she says in a soft voice.

"No," answers Early. "I'm a Reaver."

END TURN

Hmmm... I think Tash must've edited his post. I specifically remember there having been a little more to this... Basically with Saffron introducing herself and saying she had a ship waiting if Early could get them off the Reaver ship.

Control characters?

Hmmm... Question for when Raven's back on - thinking about some tension between Zoe and Slight... some about the smoking thing (since he's about to light up in the cargo bay again, after Mal asked him to take it outside), some bit of protectiveness over River, and some just avoiding any possible trouble he might cause before he leaves, just by bein' on the ship.

(I mean, right now, Zoe's pretty much just cleanin' up the cargo bay... )

HOW TO AVOID REPEAT POSTS:

Okay, Gunrunners, here's one way. If you write your post and click "Post my Response" and you see this message:

[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Transaction (Process ID 68) was deadlocked on lock resources with another process and has been chosen as the deadlock victim. Rerun the transaction.

/thread.asp, line 512

Do not, I repeat NOT use the "back" button on your browser bar to try clicking "Post my Response" again. REFRESH instead and chances are your post will be there, right where its supposed to be. My theory is that the server just gets a little "lost" sometimes, trying to return to the original thread. I'll be e-mailing Haken with this info as well, see what he has to say.

Also, if you repeat a post (purely by accident, happens to all of us at one time or another), please go back and edit the copies to remove the text. This will shorten the thread and help it load easier for those of us with neanderthal dial-up systems.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled RP.

UPDATE The quote below is Haken's response to my notice about the glitch.

Quote:

Hey Channain,

You're correct. Pretty much all the code I've written for the site aren't error trapped (because I want to see where and how the code trips up), which means that it's not very elegant when something goes awry. That particular error you encountered was caused by lots of people trying to update the thread all at the same time. The code was written to handle such an occurance, but every now and then the number of people trying to update and view the thread exceeds the default I have set.

If it this happens often, please let me know and I'll make an adjustment.

Thanks for letting me know about this.

Stay calm Ciara - keep breathing.

Hey, got a story tweak for you. Simon's about to remove Rowan's contacts and reveal green eyes - a fluke throwback gene from her mother's Irish side of the family. An Asian woman with green eyes would be pretty unusual, and it occurred to me today that it would be a great way to create a connection between Inara and Rowan's sister, Aislin. Aislin could have been one of Inara's tutors once upon a time. Working closely together, they may have had conversations about their lives before, and Aislin could have mentioned that Rowan would have been at the House on Sihnon if not for her more inflamatory character, and mentioned Rowan has the most "unusual" green eyes. Aislin would tell Inara she thought they were stunning and always envied Rowan such a unique characteristic. Of course all she ever said to her younger sister was the "unusual" part, and not in a nice way.

Thoughts?

REQUESTING INPUT FOR THE NEXT ADVENTURE

Just want to get sort of a headstart on the next Gunrunners story, so we don't have to suffer through any downtime after AinGR ends.

I believe we should decide a few general things first, before we get down to specific storylines.

1)Do we want the next story to pick up where AinGR ends?

2)Do we want to lay out a TV episode format (Teaser, four acts, Coda) or just let it roll again in 'Major Motion Picture' mode?

3)Will we be looking for any more guest stars/cast members?

We can discuss these questions here, plus any other major issues you can think of, or you can email me your opinions ( fireflygeezer@cox.net ), which I'll ignore and do exactly what I want.

I await your input, Oh Crafty Gunrunners.

Here's my opinion on the questions:

1.) I think that we could go both ways on this one, but it might be... cleaner? if we give AinGR a well planned ending (ie: don't leave any unfinished conversations or actions) and start fresh with the mini series. we might start it almost exactly where we left AinGR but at least we'll make it clear that they are two different RP games.

Am I making any sense? I don't trust my words at 8.30 in the morning.

2.) I vote for Major Motion Picture mode because that way we won't have to feel limited by a set number of acts. pre-planning acts seems like an unnecessary hassel. The only time I can see that we might NEED pre-planned acts is at the end of a RP, like we are doing now- wraping it up.

3.) Not that I can tell. All of the major roles are filled and I can't think of any other guest roles that we need. of coarse someone could show up with a new character and want to join us never know when those damn newbies might show up... lol

Well, guess that's all. I got a class to get to... later all

1) I think that would be a shiny idea. There seems to be a lot of interplay just waiting to come to the surface. Perhaps not the moment where we left off necessarily (as Squee said, no unfinished actions/conversations/etc); more like the gap between Ariel and War Stories - the beginning of War Stories is obviously aftermath of Ariel but WS is a complete story in and of itself.

2)I'll go with the group on this one; however, we need to know in advance what the format will be, so we're not just wandering around wondering where we are in the story (like we did for the first half of this one ). Maybe not the entire outline, Act-by-Act (although that would be shiny, too), but at least an idea of where we're starting, where we're supposed to end up, and some major plot points along the way.

3)At the very least, we'll need to put out a casting call for the role of Mal. Depending on the storyline, we can anticipate needing to cast some guest stars for parts integral to the new plot. (For example, are we going to meet up with Early again? If so, does Succatash want to reprise his role there? Etc.)

Always ready to "Funrun"

OK ... I DO have a episode idea ...

Not for the mini-series necessarily, but it does involve Simon 'disappearing' for an episode or two, either in the last act of the mini or soon after.

The plot is not complicated, just involved. I have a framework in mind for the story arc, which could be done in a single episode (6acts = appox 600posts). But would be better served as a 2 parter (12 acts = appox.1200 posts).

I'll stop there for now ... ... I don't want to ruin any of the surprise(s). However, I do promise, it will Whedon'esque!

EDIT
I thought we should define the act lengths.

This is my humble submission:

1 Episode = 45 minutes of film length AKA 6 acts which is appox. 600 posts (condidering appox. 100 posts per act}

1 Movie = 120 minutes AKA 12 acts or appox. 1200 posts.

1 Miniseries = 180 minutes of film length, 18 acts which is roughtly 1800 posts.

Sorry, but my mind is stuck in 'scriptwriter' mode.

EDIT
I like Geezers post limits on the teaser and coda, will add them in

As I recall, that was indeed the plan, Astriana. As you well know, writing one character is hard enough - writing two is an incredible investment of time and energy. Geezer has been doing well thus far - as you did writing Zoe and Wash, and Capn with Simon and Niska, but we do need a new player to write Mal separate and apart from Thorne.

The plan was that Geezer would continue to write Mal through the end of this episode, then a casting call would go out, similar to the one that sucked me into this happy little group.

Yep. I'd as soon get out from under Mal at the end of AinGR and either have Thorne hang around for another episode (my preference) or crank up a different guest character. I just don't find Mal that interesting. Seems to be the least complex regular character. Sort of like he's a prop for the others to use to advance the story. Hmm. Mal a prop...Malaprop? Nah.

And to answer my own general questions above:

1) I believe that the next episode should start it's story right after AinGR, and probably on or near New Hokkaido, but be stand-alone. Some of the character arcs can continue to develop, but the mission/adventure/trip/etc. should be different. (maybe something Thorne can join in, just for the fun of it, before returning to Hera.)

2) For the next RP, I'd really like to do a tight, TV episode-type, just for the challenge. A short 25 post Teaser to set the plotline; four Acts of maybe 100 posts, each Act building to a climax; and then a 25 post Coda. It'd be interesting to see if we can get it done with those constraints. Also like to do a comedy episode some time, but that's for another day.

3) I have no problem with guest stars, or swapping lead roles around, for that matter. All I'd ask is that any new characters give us a backstory and a feasible way of introducing them without throwing the plot-line off the rails. Guess it'll depend on where the action takes place. Not much room left on Serenity right now, but if we're planetside could have a whole bunch.

Everyone keep those opinions coming in, so pre-planning can occur.

[director mode] Just a continuity question. ROWAN seems pretty banged up. Any chance she'll recover, or her bumps and bruises turn out to be less than they appear, in the hour it'll take to get to Serenity Valley? Maybe she's more hung over than hurt? [/director mode]

She'll recover. It's mostly a concussion with blood loss mixed with Tequila. She's had insomnia for awhile now, though, which is why Simon had to use the drugs he did to put her under. I have a dream sequence coming up for her.

Awfully sweet of you to be so concerned for her welfare, Geezer. I do have plans for a story arc for her, but if the RP doesn't warrant it, I'll probably pour it into my next fan fic.

Quick and (almost) silly question: How are we spelling (and pronouncing) the new planet?

New Hikido (new hi-KEE-doh) (hi - "i" as in lick)
New Hokkaido (new hoh-KEYE-doh) (keye - "keye" sounds like "eye").

We've had some spellings either way, and I was just curious...

(Also, for those that don't know, Serenity Valley is located on the planet Hera - like the goddess.)

Timeline question - Will Zoe and Slight be coming to the infirmary during Simon's ministrations to Rowan, or just after? Let me know, so I don't post before Capn can finish the infirmary scene.

Just want to see if she'll be up and about for the lead(or laser)-slinging escape from the Valley, or just lazing in sickbay while everyone else does the shooting.

Right on the nose! Simon will insist she sleep due to the apparent fatigue she suffers, not just her injuries.

That sets up a later scene for Rowan and Simon to talk about her insomina.

In addition, if pressed, Simon will adminsiter a stimulant if there is a need for another 'gun-toter'.

Astriana
About Zoe and Slight:
How about they get there in time to see the Simon and Inara finishing up?

How about this setup - Zoe stops Slight from opening the door, they she looks in to see if the surgical procedure is still in progress.

Then 'while they wait' Slight and Zoe can do some exposition.

You could coordinate with Raven and do a 'blended' post, if both of you are ameniable to it.

Wow, I didn't realize that sounds like a 50s or 60s style rock band name - till I typed it!

Ok, as I really like Geezer's post limits for the teaser and coda - here is my revised submission definitions of Episodes, Movie, MiniSeries etc:

{Episodes,Movies and MiniSeries all have Teasers and Codas in addition to the Acts}

Teaser = 30 seconds to 5 minutes film length or appox. 10 to 45 posts

Coda = 30 seconds to 8 minutes film length or appox. 10 to 80 posts

1 Episode = 35 to 46 minutes of film length AKA 5 acts which is appox. 500 posts (considering appox. 100 posts per act}

1 Movie = 120 minutes AKA 12 acts or appox. 1200 posts.

1 Miniseries = 180 minutes of film length, 18 acts which is roughtly 1800 posts.

How does that sit with everyone?

Shiny! Sounds like a plan. Raven, when you see this, please either e-mail me (htempe@hotmail.com) or leave a message here of when you'd be available to work on the blended post.

Having such a sharp eye, she'd be good with the lead/laser-slinging. She'd have to borrow a weapon from someone, though. She's never carried her own, in case she ended up somewhere they weren't entirely approved of. Can't afford to get arrested.

What if she wakes up something like 5-10 minutes before the landing at Serenity Valley? would that be long enough to clear out the cobwebs from a psychotropic? Even if it isn't, she still might hear Ru's voice in her head, telling her to go for it. Not to mention the dream is going to leave her emotional and cranky. If it's Alliance she's shooting at, she might be more than a little motivated.

There will be time for sleep - and possibly more ruminating - on the way to New Hikido.

BTW, I'm spelling it "New Hikido" because that's how Humble spelled it, and it took me a bloody long time to learn to do it that way.
