Hi boys! and girl :)

I'd like to apply for the RP. I'll get my CS together and come back with it in a bit.

But first, just so you know a little about me, I run a couple of sci-fi themed message boards that I created and have played in 4 or 5 forum RPGs. I'm a medical transcriptionist by trade and a writer in my dreams.

And... don't faint... I am a person of the female persuasion. *hears the RPers gasp and someone slowly clapping*

So here's hoping you like my CS, and here's me hoping you'll let my character on board the Defiant at the next port.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Bottom line is, even if you see them coming, you're not ready for the big moments. No one asks for their life to change, not really. But it does. So, what are we, helpless? Puppets? Nah. The big moments are gonna come, you can't help that. It's what you do afterwards that count. That's when you find out who you are." Joss Whedon
Heehee, well I saw it mentioned a couple times here that there should be some women on board, too, and I wouldn't want YinYang to have all the fun.
Plus you need all those great Firefly ladies to have their fair share of representation onboard the Defiant, right?
Almost done with that CS.
Those siggies are WAY COOL. I hope I'll get to have one. I got my character all picked out.
CS
Name: Jaclyn "Jackie" Holliday
Age: 31
Sex: Female, Het.
Role: Starts off as a passenger en route to [as yet undetermined] but may end up as chief medic once she proves herself at the operating table, her specialty being orthopedic surgery or "trauma doctor".
Gear: Dr. Holliday travels light, more of a gypsy than the type to put down roots, firstly by necessity and secondly she likes it that way. She carries a medical bag with essentials like a stethoscope, pressure syringes, laser scalpels, antibiotics, bandages, and sutures. On a good day she also has plenty of anesthetics. She keeps a petite and very illegal taser strapped to her leg, hidden from view, and a hand gun in the lining of her medical bag. She carries what clothing she needs in a battered suitcase. Just the basics as far as clothes, nothing fancy; dark-colored to hide the blood stains. Her most treasured possession is a small framed hologram of her husband, Danny, a brown-coat sergeant who gave his life for The Cause.
Assets: Her beauty gets her easily "in the door"; her brains keep her out of trouble. Her training and experience as a physician is her most valuable asset.
Complications: Jackie's looks have been a handicap when it comes to unwanted attention and she developed a sharp tongue to compensate. She still mourns for Danny, the love of her life, and tends to relive his last hours whenever she struggles to save a life, esp. when the patient's injuries result from violence. She tends to wear her widowhood like a badge of honor and falls into bouts of dark depression on occasion. She's vowed not to anesthetize herself with her own drugs, but has been known to give in on the darkest days, like Danny's birthday or the anniversary of his death.
Physical Description: The doc is a striking woman, thin, small of breast but long of leg. She looks every bit of her 5'11". She's brown haired and brown eyed, with distinctive cheek bones and a cleft chin that she isn't afraid to jut out defensively when threatened.
Dainty is a word that's never described Doc Holliday. Gangly, disjointed, clumsy as a newborn foal, are more often used to describe her lack of grace.
Jackie's typical attire consists of a dark olive or brown-colored shirt with a black camisole beneath it, and dark gray, brown, or black baggy pants. Sometimes on special occasions she'll wear a burgundy shirt, but always colors that don't readily show the blood stains that often set into the material before she has a chance to scrub it out. She also favors dark-colored boots.
Shunning makeup for the most part, Jackie's only outward sign of feminine vanity is her hair. She wears it in a long silky mane and allows herself the luxury of special treatments to make it shine. She experiments with it, wearing it up one day, pony-tailed another, or maybe in a single braid down the back of her long neck.
Personality: Confident, disciplined, patient, and careful - all good attributes for a medic to have. She can also be funny, but is usually fairly reserved keeping her emotions to herself. On a bad day, she can be pessimistic and fatalistic, even falling into melancholia. Sets high standards for herself and others, sometimes to the point of contention, but always strives for honesty in her criticism. It takes her awhile to warm up to people, but once she accepts them she's intensely loyal. She's conservative, a traditionalist. She respects authority, unless they show what she considers bad judgment, then all bets are off.
Background: Jackie grew up on a dairy farm midway between the core planets and the fringe. Her father raised cattle, her mother was a mid-wife, and she was their only child. Jackie knew early in life that she wanted to be a nurse and after her training went to work on the Core side. She met Daniel Holliday, a young policeman, and they married shortly before the War for Independence broke out. Both of them left their jobs to join the Brown Coats but a year into the War she was left a widow. Broken-hearted, she returned home to the farm to heal. She then decided to take the nest egg she and Danny had been saving and use it to further her medical training. It became her life's mission to save Danny over and over again, though he'd have a different face each time. She wanted to save as many as she could and do everything else in her power to win The War against his killers.
Unfortunately, her funds hadn't been quite enough. In the final year of her training, Jackie found herself mired in debt. In order to stay in medical school, it was necessary to contract away her first two years of practice in order to raise funds. With a promise to the Mayor of [town] on [planet], she committed to spend two years in that community, doing everything from setting broken legs to birthing conjoined twins. What she hadn't bargained on was the current mayor dying of mysterious causes and his replacement being a lecherous philanderer.
Jackie brushed off the new mayor's advances, then he resorted to threats. When she called his bluff, he trashed her office and then her little cottage. She confronted him and he had his goons rough her up. She threatened to report him to the authorities but he only laughed. The man was well-connected by family ties that reached well up the Alliance hierarchy. She was alone and desperate, and just about to give up. She even was considering numbing her mind with her own drugs and giving in to him, hoping he'd finally leave her alone.
Then help arrived in a most unlikely manner.
On her way across town, walking from a patient's home back to her office, Jackie passed the docks as she regularly did. Today something was different.
[At this point, maybe I'll describe the Defiant in it's docking bay and running into someone from the crew. She'll have an epiphany and decide to defy the mayor's threats and run away, breaking her contract, abandoning her patients -- they'd just have to understand. If she stayed, if she gave in, she'd be broken, her self-respect shattered forever.]
~~~

Thanks! Going away now, but I'll check back in sometime tomorrow to learn the results and see what comments/suggestions you might have.

Wow Thanks, Capn. You made my day.

I agree that your crew is looking mighty fine and it filled up quickly. Just goes to show you how much we love Joss's verse.

Here's the pic representing Doc Holliday. That'll be her moniker until she gets to know the crew better, then it'll be Jackie or "Doc" of course. The actor is Saffron Burrows, BTW.

No, that's fine. I'd make you one myself right now if I had acess to my graphics programs.

As far as character sheets here go, these are by far the best lot of seen in a damned long while. You are all doing brilliantly, and make mine look B grange in comparison.

It's also *THE* fastest filling of a roster I have seen. Normally when I set up a crew I have an inital cast set up from previous RP's, and hope I get one or two new players.

Also, anyone that hasn't read my new changes to the intial post should, they are important if this is to be a successfull RP, though I think we'll have no problems with it.

D2tL, out!

I also encourage you all too join chat when possible, it'd be good to get to know some of ya'll.

I think Defiant2theLast will be making the siggies from now on. While I made the border he still He does them better than I. I'll make anyone a custom avatar if they'd like though. You can have one like ours(with the chinese and your crew position) or anything else you could possibly want. Just give me an idea and I can go wild with it too.

Good idea about only using the sigs for in-character posts. I'll start doing that too. I'll even go back and remove them from most of my previous posts. The thread still loads for me in seconds but not everyone has speedy net like me, I've only had it a short time as well so I know how you feel.

BTW I'm from the US. I live in southeastern South Dakota and I'm currently unemployed. Though I am seriously looking for a job nearby as I also have no car at the moment, and I live in the country. Don't worry though I'll still devote a good bit of time to this when I get that job.

My love of Bundaberg came when a certain Kiwi introduced me to ginger beer about a year ago. I go through a case a week now.

EDIT: I had no idea he was posting at the same time as me... Kiwi doesn't require an explanation now!

You're using the wrong link. Down towards the bottom right when you view the pic individually, there's a box titled "share this image" with four options: email and IM, direct link, html code, and img code. For this board, you need to copy and paste the direct link. Like this:

Wow, lot of Aussies around here. It is odd we're a bunch of Ginger nuts too. Though not unsurprising as it's one of the best beverages around.

Celestia, try Cost Plus World Market if you have one in your area. I can't find Bundaberg anywhere else, reliably. They also tend to carry one or two other Bundaberg products as well, Root Beer and sometimes a Diet of either. I'm trying to get my local WM to carry one other their others too.

Bucket, I messed up the text on that avatar and updated it to fit in better with the text in the others, also looks a bit cleaner. I've been having issues with images getting "crackly" and "fuzzy" as well. I think it's a photobucket issue... I can't think of any other cause that would effect other people as well.

Here's the corrected avatar:

-I still wouldn't use it on a lighter background as the edges are a bit rough. I'll clean that up once I have time to play with the clone stamp tool again.

Celestia, I made you an alternate avatar. One thing that always irked me about the tagline is that longer quotes get cut to two lines for people with lower resolutions. This has the quote in the pic itself. I'm also a huge fan of Einstein, Plus I need the practice with text, so I decided to just make one without asking. Hope that's ok.

Here's the new Avatar, hope you like:

Also, for all of you, I highly recommend this fan-made music video. It's set to an awesome song by The Killers.
'All These Things That I Have Done'

I feel it really captures the feeling of the series.

hey yall. Before we get to it I was thinking about the practicalities of the ship, like:
who sleeps where,
any noticeable differences the defiant has to serenity,
given that Alexander the scout aint onboard yet- who has been making our meals of packaged protein more edible?
and any other interesting minor details we might wanna set before this shindig starts.
heres a link to a page all about serenity with links to maps of the ship. The actual map links came up as pics :(

anyway, if its ok with the cap, I'd like to propose that I HAD been living in one of the crew dorms, as there are 4 dorms and the passenger quarters woulda been fairly lonely.
Perhaps it coulda been filled with goods or whatnot as well. With the arrival of the two new crewmembers I could be shifted out in-game i spose.
Anyway, those are my thoughts.
What are all yours?

Great minds think...

Part of the reason I include "hopefully", in my last post is that I also had to write up things like this. That, and it's ANZAC day, but whatever.

As for laying out who's room is who's, I've been tinkering with some schematics I have and I'll discuss it later. For now, Dale will have been sleeping in the passenger dorms, and crew will have been sleeping in the crew dorms. Exacts can be worked out later.

And for future reference, could you link pics like that rather then post them, as it breaks the borders of the thread (Also, could you go remove that image?).

Right, well, since I'm not starting onboard, I don't really have to worry about much yet, although I was just wondering if there was a definitive point where I join the crew, as I might edit my CS a bit around it?

Perhaps I could be a specialist brought on for a specific job, and because the cap finds me fairly helpful, asks if I wouldn't mind hangin' round for a while?

Or I stowe away on board to escape Alliance. Etc. Etc.

Oh, and cap (i'm just gonna call u captain from now on, sound good?) any chance of a brief overview of where we are in the timeline? I'd like to know what part of the war we're up to, whether the alliance is fully formed/operational yet, or are they still just lobbying and advertising themselves to get voted in or whatever?

The period in which the RP is set has been stated. January 2509 is the current date. Read the first post again, he's updated it even more, recently.

The Alliance was formed LONG before the war started. Most likely sometime around the early 25th century at the very least, making it older than one hundred years. However not much is known for certain about the time line so we can only speculate from what is known from comics, series, movie and other canon and semi-canonical information.

We really should work on a time line for the use of this RP. I'll work on it if it's ok with the Captain. Stay tuned for a thread on this matter within the next hours or days... depending on life stuff.

*UPDATE* I've got the go ahead and I'm assembling information. I'll hopefully have a new thread up tonight. I will post here when I do.

I had seen the date previously, but I hadn't realised the first post had been updated! My apologies!

How much of this information is taken from the Visual Companions and the Serenity RPG and such? As I have none of these (being in Australia, they're incredibly hard to find near me...) and so I'm not well-versed in the timeline of the war and such.

Can anyone let me know what it's worth buying to understand all this history? I'm probably going to order the Visual Companions from Amazon within the next few days, but aside from that, is it worth me getting the RPG and such?

The RPG, no probably not. But the visual companions are awesome for any fan.

Any need to know information as far as the time line will be included in the upcoming Defiant Time line.

I should be. I've been around here for half a decade almost and I own a number of canon reference sources.

I've also written fanfics, been involved in RPs and otherwise researched the 'verse to heck and back. HAH!
