I was watching "Serenity" over the weekend and came up with a question (that hopefully has not been already addressed).

Select to view spoiler:

During the end battle sequence when what is left of the crew tries to barricade themselves behind the blast doors in the hallway leading to the elevator (or as someone in the movie says, the "lift"), Zoe asks Jayne how much ammunition they have left. He responds: "Three full mags and my swinging cod". At least, that is what I *think* he says (I did not check the subtitles). What in the world is a "swinging cod"? Is this an actual weapon or is he making a joke? Also, did I miss it or did Vera not make an appearance? Jayne has that massive machine gun that almost looks like a minigun but I never saw a clear shot of Vera anywhere.

Any clarification would be of great help. Thanks!

I just hope in the Special Edition they give us an alternate take from River's POV.

I don't give so much of a rip about the battle; we already see enough *amazing* shots of that. I just want to see right after it, you know? When River runs over and hits the button to open the blast doors. Then runs back to the middle of the room and poses so that the rest of the crew can see her as the purple bellies blow the wall behind her. That scene turns all manner of funny when you think of what had to happen on her side of the door in order to get that shot.

LOL! Never thought of it that way... I always assumed the Alliance troops sort of opened every door in the complex that wasn't already blown off or blown up, trying to figure out where our BDH were.

A "swinging cod" refers to a man's genatalia.

I guess if you want to get imaginative, you could say that she managed to swing her last victim at the panel and used its body to open the doors that way. That would make for a remarkably less funny image, but I think it would be awesome to see a body fly, hit a panel, and pop a door open.

And then then purple pod people ruin it.

OOOO And I forgot about the swinging cod. When I heard that I rewound it because there was no way he would say that. Would he? It was Jayne. He did. mmmmm, would love to see that weapon.

You know, they tell ya to never hit a man with a closed fist, but it is, on occasion, hilarious.

But did not Kaylee suggest that she could "rig 'em so they won't re-open once they close"? She is phased when she hears that Wash "ain't comin'", but she is later seen doing something with bits of wire just before the "You mean to say .. as .." exchange with Simon.

So we have to assume that whatever caused the blast doors to open, it was not River pushing a button. Sorry - it was going to be a nice scene. My money would be on the Alliance activating a security fail-safe.

Yeah, in addition to removing all of the obstacles therein, it would have a psychological affect on the BDHs etc. etc. causing disorientation momentarily stemming from the sudden shock of the doors in front and behind you opening for apparently no reason, not to mention that the Purplebellies might be behind, above, or below you.

Well..the cod part's been covered (he's talking about his John Thomas here, ladies), but about poor Vera.

Now...supposedly I heard or read somewhere that the gun Jayne has with him on Haven the second time and on Miranda (looks like they modded out a HK MP5 with one-piece stock) was Vera, but I somehow dobut Vera went from being a bruiser of a weapon (series prop had at least .50-cal bullets for ammo) to something that fires pistol ammo.

My personal theory is that Jayne went with a weapon better suited for the kind of opposition the crew was gonna face, as Vera is more a long range sniper's weapon than a CQC (close-quarters combat) gun. And honestly....Vera seems to much of a cheat to use against Reavers...the firepower and acceessories she caries ("autolock" seems to denote target-following ammo like mini-missiles) would be overkill for a Reaver.

Vera is based on a particular type of combat shotgun which has a folding stock. I assume that image is of the prop with the fake Barrel removed.

As an aside we probably never see Vera because it's not a working prop.

Vera was original made for another movie.. and Eddie Murphy one I think. It was supposed to be a novel OICW, which was all the rage at the time (which didn't work too well, and basically became an excuse to try to sell the military a G36 wrapped up in a supersoaker body. Also didn't work. But that's another story)

ANYHOW.. Vera is based on a Saiga sporting semi-auto shotgun.. basically a shotgun designed around a Kalishnikov action (you can see the body of it buried in there in that picture. ) Oh, and semi-auto only of course. The original builder made a new grip and milled out a bunch of decor pieces for it. And made it folding. The barrel is on that picture, it's just folded up over the action.

When the folks at Firefly got a hold of it, they bolted a bunch of other goodies to it, and in so doing made it so it wouldn't fold anymore.

Neat lookin' toy, but um.. not as interesting as The Cod.

The Yoo-nited States of America, baby. :D

Once upon a time, I worked for a friend in his Tactical-Guns-R-Us workshop. He made stuff for local police departments, I think some local National Guard units, and of course just plain folk. While there I got to take apart, clean, and play with quite a few modern small arms.. let's see.. an HK MP5, an HK G36, Colt M4 (the select fire version), some Remington based sniper rifles...um... all kinds of pistols, suppressed and not ... I'm sure there were others but I can't think of 'em right now.

Truth be told, the ol timey stuff is prettier, but it's nice to know how the modern stuff works I guess.

Hrmm.. that depends I guess.

Pistols.. the modern versions of the 1911 have superb ergonomics and are a nice balance of power and handling. Nothing points or handles like a Single Action Army (that's Colt Peacemaker) though. I'd say that'd be my favorite, provided it was reworked with modern springs and cylinder stop for durability.

As to all the modern plastic pistols.. enh. They work, but I have yet to handle one I really like.

Rifles.. my personal soft spot is for the Winchester model 70 classic, with pretty wood. Go back to old west days, and the Sharps carbine is a really pretty piece of work.

If you're talking modern fightin' type rifles, I reckon M16-based carbines are mighty nice. They work as well as any other 5.56 out there (problems 40 years ago notwithstanding), and have truly superb ergonomics, especially with aftermarket forward vertical grips and extended charging handles.

I don't really get into shotguns, so I couldn't really say there.

How's that for indecision? I just get excitable as to choice is all. :)

I just had to start a guns conversation didn't I?

Revolvers are always nice but aren't as practical anymore, but my fav is the Colt Anaconda, it's a bit new compared to other revolvers, but it gets the job done, as for newer Semi auto handguns its a tie for me between the .50 AE Desert Eagle and the FN Fourty-Nine with .40 S&W ammo.

For me in assault rifles the new M8 comes to mind, with the exception of the Polymer body its a great AR. Or Italies FAMAS (one of the Browncoats assault rifles for those who didn't know)It's an assault rifle but has the RPM of most SMG's. The original M16 wasn't that good but the newer model A2's and A3's are doing pretty good.

I'm also partial to some of the guns that never made it like the Jackhammer Shotgun and the M28 OICW.

Look real close. I'm pretty certian that we never actually see Vera discharge in War Stories. That's why Jayne is running around with what I beleive is a Colt 1911. I'd be more precise but my DVD's are spread amongst my converts right now. 8 and rising!

I've heard that the Vera prop can fire. It may well have in its Eddie Murphy incarnation, but given all the action in War Stories, that would have been a good time to have Vera spitting flames. This suggests to me that the prop is non-firing. If somebody stands up and says, "I saw them fire the gun on the set of Firefly." I'll shutup.

Random thought. Vera's folded configuration actually looks a lot like the OCIW-esque weapons used in Universal Soldier: the Return.

Jayne's Pistol is a LeMat 9 shot plus under-barrel Shotgun revolver with what appears to be a RIS rail and Red dot sight.

The weapon he carried in Serenity was what appeared to be a modified H&K MP10, which is the MP5 scaled up to the Ten Milimetre Auto cartridge ((Much better than the 40 Short&Weak in my opinion.)) It would be interesting to see an episode, bridging further season 1 and the film, in which He loses Vera and his Pistol ((Did anyone notice its being replaced with some fancy autopistol like Simon had in War Stories?)) and then another episode in a Season 2 in which he gets them back.

I think a prop of Vera was fired in the spacesuit in Our Mrs. Reynolds, but maybe not the hero weapon.

The current M16s are no better in reality than the old ones. I've fired the A3, and never have I had so many jams in two trigger pulls. Whereas the AK-47 ((Or most any Kalashnikov)) you could bury for ten years, dig it up, insert a magazine, pull back the charging lever, and bam! you're in the fight.

The 1911 is one of the greates handguns ever, far better than the M9. Something about stopping power, I think!?

I know I'm going to regret this....
The M-16 A1,A2, and A3 all have similar reliablity performance. All of them have the same modifications to the original M-16, I can't recall the list right now.

The priamry is the powder. The first M-16's were actually very reliable, with respect to fouling the gas chamber. They were however prone to misfires due to insufficient powerder in the cartridge. That is because they the cardtridges were using a "stick" powder. This means it is harder to measure out evenly. When the army switched to a "ball" powder, the problem of underpowered cartridges went away, but aother problem came up. The ball granuales didn't burn cleanly, thus leaving gunk in the gas chamber.

So long as you keep firing, you should be okay, the gunk stays warm and gooy. Each round fires should blow the chamber clean, but if you stop firing, the chamber will cool, and the gunk will harden like epoxy. They you in there with a dental pick.

This can be even worse depending on the characteristics of the powder you are using. If it is really "dirty" powder the weapon is more prone to jam. Also is there any hardened residue that hasn't been cleaned out?

The problem is that the "gunk" builds up so fast its hard even to get three rounds down the barrel. Can't beat the Kalashnikov for reliability, I say. The 5.56mm NATO is also not all that effective in killing. Sure, it yaws, but your target will take half-a-mag and go down shooting at you whereas the 7.62 NATO drops him in one shot. And the SOCOM 16 is just as controllable as the M16 with the bigger bullet, so why doesn't the military adopt that?

The 5.56 was adopted precisely because it isn't a particularly effective killing round. The theory was that it costs opposing forces more to retrieve and care for seriously wounded than to bury or abandon dead . The Soviets lacked such romantic notions, and went for a standard assault rifle that could be operated and maintained by any illiterate dirt farmer anywhere in the world, as well as fed with existing WWII-era ammo production facilities. The chrome-plated bores of the AK series are things of beauty, the actions have more slop than a pigsty, but that's why they can function in freezing cold or packed full of mud. Da, put hole in thing real good.

Gimme a M-14 any day. And some decent cover.

No, that was part of it, too. The Brits were looking to decrease the overall mass of their next generation of assault rifles, and we were too. A piece as light as an M-16 spittin' .30-06 or even .303 rounds on full auto WOULD be pretty ugly. But the whole "wound don't kill" economic-attrition model was a big part of the decision as well. For a while in the '60s, the Army was training grunts to ignore the sights completely and to instinctly point-shoot with the .223 sprayguns. Daisy BB gun company was contracted to make BB guns without sights for use in the training program - I kid you not, some of those kids on their way to Vietnam were trained with BB guns.

Sandinista, I don't know if you caught the posts, but the first half (Player's Handbook) of the BIG SKY airsoft LARP rules are available for download at:

these rules would work fine with paintball as well. Let me know if you like 'em, and I'll finish the Event Organizer's Guide. I'm looking for an excuse to finish the rules set, you see....

I clicked the link, and I got a "Cannot Find Server" bit. I prefer airsoft, more realistic, and definately easier on the pocket book.

On the whole "Wound don't Kill" thing; I prefer my enemies taking a dirtnap and having no ability whatsoever to fire back than their government having to pay medical bills. In battle, it is best to focus on the short-term, without losing sight of the long term. If we want medical bills, why not just make a gas which renders them unable to fight, and then make a cure which we can sell at absurd prices to our enemies, thereby depleting the economies of said enemies.

I might stand to be corrected here, but when Jayne fires through the spacesuit in Our Mrs. Reynolds we only see a close-up of the end of the barrel - it really could be any rifle inside that helmet.

Vera definitely does *not* get fired in War Stories - Jayne carries it, but only fires his handgun.

So I lean towards the theory that Vera was not a working prop in Firefly. But as to why it was not used in Serenity....I dunno. Maybe they thought it looked hokey up on the big screen, with all those obviously tacked-on bits.

Cheers,
Johnboy

Plus I think Jayne had Vera going in at least one other episode...maybe "War Stories," during the storming of the Skyplex.

He carries it, but never fires it.

Well...for overall layout, Vera could be the modified HK MP10 that Jayne carries on Haven the second time; for firepower, the GE minigun sized weapon Jayne uses till he gets shot be Reavers at the standoff at Mr. Universe's could be a suitable replacment.

And I stand corrected. Jayne doesn't use Vera during the BDH siege of Niska's skyplex (probably so he didn't blow through a pressure hull or something). Though I am pretty sure the weapon Jayne fires at the end of Our Mrs. Reynolds through the helmet of a spacesuit is supposedly Vera, but yeah...you never see the actual rifle fire during the series. Kinda surprised they never had Jayne use Vera during the attack on the Heart of Gold.

One pont to note is that for some eps Jayne could of been out of ammo for Vera. Theres a comment in The Message about not being able to get ammo for one weapon or another. Chances are that for a high tech piece of kit like Vera, Jayne wouldn't always have ammo.

As for the modified MP5 Jayne is carrying around in Serenity, I suspect it was a conscious decision to give Jayne a cooler looking rifle to shoot with.

Ammo would be in short supplies. The Alliance would limited the sales of ammo , not wanting another war with the out laying planets. That would mean that smuggling ammo is big business.
I have also noticed alot of various firearms on the show, nothing seemed standard. But a rebel army would use what it could buy, steal from local Fed troops or what troops brought with them.

Also look at the American civil war, the Congo war, and a few other wars for independence around the world to get a look at the assortment to be found.

Don't we all? As for me, my favorite pistol is, hands down, the Ruger P-89. It is just such an easy gun! Decent accuracy, reliable design, and easy maintenance. What more could I ask for?

As for Rifles, it's a close tie between my 1953 Red Army issue SKS (modified to take bananna clips instead of strippers) and my AR-180. I like the power of the SKS a lot, but the AR-180 definitely outclasses it in terms of accuracy. Both are easily cleaned and maintained. The SKS is more reliable than the AR-180, but is heavier. Plus, the 180 has a pre-ban folding stock. Hmm... I still can't decide...

You're welcome on my boat. God ain't.

First, to correct some misconceptions about the AR/M16 series. It IS NOT anywhere NEAR as unreliable as lore says it is. I have owned three ARs over the years. Some all-factory, some mixmaster parts. Of them all.. the ONLY failures I EVER experienced were due to a single bad magazine (FN manufacture) that had the locking hole for the mag catch punched out in the wrong place, so as to hold the mag too low for the bolt to strip rounds. Not being military, my cleaning can best be described as erratic... I certainly wasn't babying 'em.

The M16 series has its problems (that some gosh-awful burst mechanism with its three different trigger pulls, the way some loose ones can feel floppy or give a facefull of gas around the charging handle) .. but they're annoyances. Not critical function design errors.

It's not for nothing that the AR/M16 platform is still used all around the world in all climates almost a half century after its adoption. No, it ain't perfect. But it's a pretty decent rifle nonetheless.

So far as the effectiveness of 5.56.. so long as it's going over 2500 feet per second, it will typically fragment on impact and do all kinds of (fatal) nastiness to the recipient. There's also the question of projectile design.. the armor piercing stuff doesn't fragment and has been reported to be less effective on people. Inside of 100 yards, standard 5.56/.223 has even been reported to have superior terminal effects that 7.62 (.308) due to fragmentation.

Anyhow.. what it all comes down to is..don't use short barrels and fire at targets far away, and don't use AP unless you're firing at something armored, and it should do you fine.

ANYHOW.. on to the Firefly stuff..
Yes, Jayne's pistol in Serenity is some variant of 1911. It has what looks like some kind of reflex sight built into the slide though, and I don't know of any real world maker that does that.. so I'm assuming its custom built for the movie, possibly even out of rubber or suchlike.

I've heard Vera is now in private hands in the UK, and has been deactivated. I don't know if this was done prior to its use on Firefly though.

Oh yeah... one more thing on the M16 while its on my mind.. simple logic time.

I don't care how you feel about our going into Iraq.. one way or t'other, don't matter here. The point is, we have CongressCritters raising a stink 'cause Humvees weren't APCs, 'cause the entire force wasn't wearing armor that wasn't even on the drawing board the last time we went to war.. all kinds of stuff.

If the M16 was really as bad as legend has it, TRUST ME.. we'd have CongressCritters getting all teary eyed holding the darn thing in front of Walter Reed hospital.

As it is.. the US Army was even looking at replacing the M16 with the XM8 a while back (basically an HK G36 wrapped up in a new space-gun lookin' plastic shell).. they dropped the project. No substantial benefit from it.

It works.
