While I prefer the less socially acceptable 'taking the piss' (var. '...out of you/me/us/her/him'), both the mick and the piss are like saying 'pulling my leg' or 'having me on' or my favorite, "dipping Angus'pyle's pigtails in the inkwell".

Well, I do know what you mean. You've got a light touch that I wish I could emulate, instead of playing court jester. But unless my mother's not telling me something (not that that would suprise me, of course), or you're offspring my "natural" father hasn't 'fessed up to (again, not going to be surprised), my wormhole theory is the only one that makes any kind of sense.

My mother got deliberately pregnant with me 'way back in '65, so she and my biological dad could (this was the plan) get married. Instead, my BD got himself shipped out to Germany, my mother got pissed off (as she is wont to do), and married my "real" dad (ie, the dad who married my mother when she begged for help, adopted me, and raised me). I've met my BD, and was ignored by him so he could hang out with my brother-in-law (now deceased, although there is no correlation between meeting my BD and BiL dying). - Just biographical data so perhaps we can sort out the whole separated-at-birth thang....

Yessir. Planning on it, Zed. Now there's a mystery to solve, I wouldn't dream of disappearing into the sunset just yet. Except for my dental appointment tomorrow afternoon.

Have I mentioned my fear of dentists? I had most of my early dental work done in NZ, where the dental nurses hadn't yet received anaesthetic technology. With genetically poor tooth materiel to work with, I was with the dental nurses a lot. Without anaesthetic. Yes, I bear a grudge.

Sorry. It's 2am, and I wander.....

(edited because it was 2 am and my fingers wandered. No, not that kind of wandered, get your mind out of the gutter.)

Actually Angus Thermopyle is a Stephen R Donaldson character from his Gap novels. I think Harry Potter sucks lol. His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman was so much better - although I'd debate it being a children's series.

And here I was all set to not like you. I have a genetic predisposition toward debating - must come from my wee mum's side. Her Scottish mum crossed the pond with 10 other family members when she was three. The other half from Mum is Welsh and an ancestor the english deemed "extremely troublesome."

The non-caps on english intentional, btw. I don't capitalize fox either. That's my sole irretrievable cultish quirk.

I don't necessarily think Harry Potter sucks, although the movies leave a great deal to be desired. To say the least.

I will agree with you on the "His Dark Materials" trilogy - some damn fine writing. Reminds me of Terry Goodkind's "Sword of Truth" - just when you think you know what's going on, it gets all twisty.

I also don't know how HDM got to be published in the children's arena. The only thing child-oriented is that the central character is a juvenile. The rest is written very much at an adult level.

See, that's what I get for not paying attention, Embers. Or, not getting involved in that which interests me but little.

Yep, the serial post thing is irritating, but it is - as far as I can see - somewhat unavoidable when the posting box is on a separate page from the thread. I'm used to having everything on the same page, available to me, so perhaps what's-his-name is as well. I have the same issue with the prospero board.

And the Browncoats board.

Too much editing makes one look like one is not responding fast enough to everyone else. And, if one wants to give the impression that one is, well, on top of everything, I guess one must serial post.

Or something.

It's Snoop Dogg for "For Sure." You take the first letter or two, or syllable of a word and add "izzle" and it makes a new word. Sometimes you can add the "izzle" form in the middle of the word, as in "dizam." All the cool kids are doing it. This way, even more people don't understand what they're saying.

Pardon me, but wasn't it you who tried to offend my nationality with your little e? I merely answered in kind.

Incite riots? Are you insane? Is it not permitted for fans (of which I'm one) to have their own opinions? You should maybe read the earlier threads and you'll see that bar you and one other, we had a good discussion going about what being a fan is all about. Shame some people get so involved that they miss the point. It's called a message board, not a quote and don't rock the boat board.

Nope, never been banned from anything in my life. Feel free to report me to teacher if you have to. I don't think it'll do much and if it does then this isn't a site I'd want to be a part of anyway.

The Fox message was a joke. Anyway, they did give us the chance to see four series of futurama! They can't be all bad, just not terribly courageous. Their news channel does suck big time though.

I'm sorry you felt the need to report me; but that's your issue not mine.

Angus/Andrew - please accept my deepest apology. I did send a message to Haken about this thread and have felt horrible about it ever since. It was an ignorant, judgemental thing to do and I hope you'll be able to forgive me.

Of course you're entitled to your opinion. The fact that I don't agree with it - or with how you choose to express it - is my problem, not yours.

However, few fans like to be called sheep - no matter the genre. Especially fans who have done so much to help keep alive the kind of quality work that was and is Firefly. Writing in the vernacular of the show, doing silly things like pouring virtual fresh wine, and participating in role playing are only a few ways we try to show our support. However, any one of us reading the headline like "Sheep baaaaaaah, baaah, bah" was coming in ready to bite. I'm here to admit I was one of them.

And the lowercase "e" for the English - I'm deeply regretful of that too. It was a horrible bit of sarcasm. One drawback of the boards is that sarcasm doesn't come across very easily. It's an acquired skill. My mother still talks about her Scottish family (lowland Fergusons from south of Glasgow), so for me the history is still very vibrant. I'm even the Region IX Vice President of the Clan Ferguson Society of America - can you believe there are such things? Being the descendant of a far-flung culture does strange things to the brain sometimes.

fox network has been called the serial killer of quality television, and I've seen very little of late to change the status quo. It's true, they aren't very courageous - at all. This isn't the first time they've tortured quality TV and science fiction in particular - sports has ALWAYS come first, as evidenced by the one and only season of Space: Above and Beyond (not exactly quality, but not given a chance to be, was it?).

If you reject my apology, I'll accept that and move on. But by all means PLEASE KEEP POSTING. We need fans like you - the kind that stir things up and remind us why we're here, but also that this is not the real world. Heaven forbid.

Frivolous bit of trivia: I was born in the Year of the Sheep, according to the Chinese Zodiac. I actually had no reason to get offended in the first place.

I'm sorry, but why exactly do we need people like Angus on the boards? She/He began an insulting thread that called Firefly fans sheep, and unkindly teased them for their use of the venacular, their devotion to Whedon and possible costumes, and other fandom tendancies. These things may come off as a mite outlandish, but they are valid expressions of devotion and this forum is the last place where I would expect to see them judged.
Bottom line, it was RUDE to say those things and then casually assert that it was all in good fun. The current culture is hard eonough on devotees of anything, when only disinterest is considered cool, we fans need a safe place to let our inner geek out.

He's since changed his ways and everyone is entitled to an opinion. He's also been advised that fans don't like being called sheep. To my knowledge, he hasn't done it since.

I honestly think he didn't realize what he was saying. He's not as deep into the fandom as the rest of us - he was only trying to understand. Sometimes step one is to flat out say, "Start by not calling us sheep."

And finnally, this was about what was funnier, Titus Andronics or the Magna Carta

The Magna Carta.

Really, try to read it absolutly drunk...

------------------------

Ok... here comes when people yells at me because I hadn't used the 'edit' link but posted four or five message one after the other... and hence for my shame, I've not even quoted... this should go to the list of 'Not to do un a forum'.
*Shame face*

The truth is that I just read the thread from the beggining... well, most of it, and I loved it... really, is just an example of how discussion that began wrong should develop.

On what it was being said:
I disagree with AngusThermopyle and the whole Sheep Baahbaaah thing (yet I found the title very funny), you can obses over a series and post messages roleplaying whoever you want and still be centered and know the difference between reality and fiction.
And saying Sheep was not nice of you.
I hate being called a sheep because it means people is telling me, or someone, that I have no self opinion or sensible thoughts...
(You should have called us ships, everybody would have liked that).
And as I said in one of the infamous previous messages, I disagree too with the whole Shakespeare stuff (^_^ you [insert chinesse for heretic]).
On the other hand, there's little to say about people that answer threads they find ofending by simply insulting the one who posted it. It's not a matter of what a board needs or does not needs, it's a matter that opinions are free and there's lots and lots of them. It's called diversity, and the basis of that democracy we all love so much.

And about learning chinesse... well, I'm still learning english (as a blind duck would have guessed over the english slaughter I've wrote above) but I must say that cursing in chinesse must be fun.
Costumer: Excuse me, senyoreta, what are you? Stupid? It's not my fault I dropped the movile phone so I demand...
Me: You Ching-wah tsao duh liou mahng!...
Costumer: I beg your pardon?
Me: Nothing, just a sneeze... how can I help you then?

And Channain, I think that apologize was rather brave (I'm stubborn as hell and I usually find it hard to apologize over anything >_<).

Please tell me we're not going to go down that road again... Remember, in order to get proper use of a dictionary, you must be able to comprehend the definitions.

Hey guys, months and months later I remember that I wanted to apologize to EVERYONE I have EVER bugged about the word "irony". Ya know, I finally looked that sucker up in a different dictionary than the one I usually use and now I get it. You are all correct, the damn dictionary definition does not come CLOSE to the one I learned at my (English teacher and Humanities teacher and Literature teacher)father's knobbly knee. I hope anyone I have offended will please forgive. Just for sharing purposes, what my dad emphasized was the "shot himself in the foot" aspect of irony, that the person involved in the situation being referred to as ironic is brought down by the very activities they undertook in order to prevent misfortune, activities without which the misfortune certainly would not have come to pass. As so much in life does.

Lunatikat - breathlessly awaiting illumination, or was it dimly awaiting respiration?

2 years, 4 months and 3 days since the last post in the thread? And resurrected from Troll Country?! That's what I call a lot of water under the bridge.

For what it's worth, you are forgiven as requested. Truth be told, I never hold a grudge, so I forgave you 2 years, 4 months and at least 2 days ago.

Why are you hanging out in Troll Country when you could be engaging in wacky shenanigans in any number of Imponderable, SereniTREE, et al threads in GenDis? Or if you prefer yelling, screaming and name-calling there's a full menu of threads in RealWorldDis...

[ teasing ] Stop living in the past! Posting in threads that died in February of 2005 -- 7+ months before the BDM premiered -- won't bring Book or Wash back to life! The present is a far superior place in which to live...particularly if one is a stock holder in a major oil company! [ / teasing ]

Responsively,

zoid

P.S.
Errr... SPOILER ALERT!

That was for spilling the beans about Book and Wash dying in the BDBOF, above. Sorry for being a little tardy with that warning. That was pretty much how my third child got conceived, too...

P.P.S.
Also for what it's worth, 'words' are made up of arbitrary (chosen at random) sounds and symbols. Words gain their meaning (definition) by a having sizable portion of the population agree on that same meaning, so that an idea, a mental image may be shared between communicants. Therefore, if someone wants to 'axe' me a question, it's snobbery to pretend that I don't understand that particular definition of the word 'axe', even though it's not included in any dictionary I've ever seen.

This is kinda the problem with the word 'irony': Even the dictionaries aren't terribly concrete on its definition or correct usage. People use it all the time, and mostly, incorrectly. But if we all use it incorrectly according to the dictionary and The Rules O' Th' English Language, then the users have changed the meaning of the word by majority, and perhaps it's the dictionaries and Rules that need to be changed?

This mix-up of what a word is (arbitrary sounds/symbols assigned meaning by common agreement), versus what a dictionary is (a listing of the commonly agreed upon meanings assigned to arbitrary sounds/symbols...as opposed to a Rule Book) is all very ironic, as far as I'm concerned. Wouldn't you agree?
