TROOPER

I think I saw a Chinese signature stamp for Mal in a picture of the press kit. A western name is usually formed from characters that produce a phonetic or similar sounding representation. "John" for example is frequently formed using the characters that are pronounced: "Yue Han", i.e. "Johann". Other combinations of characters are possible.

I did a google search to see if the signature stamps were available and found several sites. Two of the more interesting are:

http://www.goodorient.com/Gifts__Collectibles_Seal_Carvings_1.html This site provides a free graphic of many western names in Chinese characters.

http://store.goodcharacters.com/chinesestamps.html This site provides more background on selecting the characters to form a phonetic version of your name.

These and many others will make a signature stamp for you in a variety of forms at a wide range of costs. The traditional ink color for the stamps is red.

I took a closer look at the signature stamp on Mal's letter in the press kit picture (it is back on ebay) and it looks like the stamp could be the characters for "Serenity". It would make sense for the Captain to have a stamp for the ship.

River :

most likely 河 or 川

but could be done with phonetics

Mal if we went for 'bad in the latin' and back to Chinese might be 壞 or 坏 or we could go for the direct version of 'Mal' which would mean :
avenue or to cross the street in Chinese
马路 or 馬路

Our Shepherd named book might be 书 or 書 or 本 ( various ways of writing the word 'book' )

KESTRELSEMPAI

I found this site on About.com which has a huge list of male and female first names and links to thumbnails and larger images of the Chinese characters:
http://chineseculture.about.com/library/weekly/aa103199.htm

They have Malcolm, Simon, Jayne (female), Kaylee, Zoe, and River (male). Sorry, no listings for Book, Inara, or Wash.

see , I wasn't too far off. I got the first character in Mal's name correct

I like those other names in chineseculture about- dot com
very cool

but I'm not sure of River's
The first character 里 is sometimes used to describe a town/village or is used to describe mileage
I reckon this character would be too masculine for a girl's name in Asia

I don't know about in China, but in Japan the character has the same meanings and is also a phonetic character (ri) for names. There are many Japanese girls and women named Eri, Mari, Rie, etc. who have that character in their names.

That being said, 理 (ri, Mandarin li3: reason, principle, logic) is more popular in Japanese girls' names.

The characters are beautiful and could say somethin' quite offensive but I'd never know. tee hee I've always been curious about how my name would look in Chinese and Japanese characters. I may be a character and I may have character but I don't think there's a character for my name. Funny, Thiemba just doesn't seem to be a common name in these parts of the world.

"Funny, Thiemba just doesn't seem to be a common name in these parts of the world."

a good starting point might be to find out what your name means or what its root meaning is. Then you could find a Chinese character for that.

It is fun to pick out a character for yourself --- something that has meaning for you and for those who know both you and it. so have some fun!

"once you've been to serenety, you never leave" --- ZOE, warrior-woman

AILIAN

Well, in Japanese, you name would be in katakana because you're a foreigner. :) I'm to going guess on the pronunciation, so I'd say: チエンバー (chiembaa) (Written like that, it sounds like "cibemba", a Bantu language. :)

A lot of foreigners here will either take a name that sounds like their own (my friend Heather's name is 荷花 [he2hua1] -- lotus flower) or has the same meaning of their own. My name is 黎爱莲 (li2 ai4lian2); my last name means "dark" and is the name of a minority group (many in Hainan island).. and Leon Lai!; "ailian" means "love lotus" and was taken from "ai lian shuo" ("On the Love of the Lotus"), a poem by Zhou Dunyi.
