To answer my own question, I know that I sure would. That is one singular looking firearm, with its "old west" romance and its magazine fed sensibilities. A hero's firearm indeed.
I encourage likeminded folk to contact Master Replicas license division LicenseIdeas@MasterReplicas.com and urge them to get crackin' on just such a project. Master Replicas produces high quality metal prop replicas from the worlds of S.F. and fantasy. Some of their faithful recreations have already escalated in value. Their Han Solo Blaster retailed at $499, sold out and now fetches prices in excess of $1.000 on Ebay, so there's investment potential as well.
Of course, maybe I'm all alone in my desire. I'll be watching the posts.
Best to you all,
Rick Bilyeu

I'd also like to know more about Jayne's revolver.

Hi Static,
Jayne's revolver, I've been informed is based on the LE MAT CIVIL WAR PISTOL/SHOTGUN. Just paste that in a search on Ebay and you can see it for yourself and decide. They run $49 dollars.
Also here is a copu of the email I sent to Master Replicas yesterday.

Dear Master Replicas,
I'd like to bring to your attention to a prop replica that should be
profitable for both you and the rights holder.
In 2002 the FOX television network aired the critically acclaimed series, Joss
Whedon's "Firely". The network axed this brilliant gem of a western set in
space to the anguish of several million viewers.
Last December the complete series was released on DVD. The Hollywood Reporter
recently quoted its' sales figures in excess of 200,000 sets sold.
Universal bought the rights to "Firefly" from 20th Century Fox and have now
green lighted a feature film, "Serenity", based on and continuing the
adventure that began on the small screen, for release in 2005.
The series fan base, as indicated, loves the show and is willing to spend
money. Already press kits from the TV series and small trinkets from the set
are selling on Ebay for prices in the $400 to $500 range.
And so I bring to your attention to the sidearm of the series lead hero,
Malcolm Reynolds. A futuristic magazine fed projectile weapon, which captures
the romance of a six shooter from the 1800's. This firearm is so singular in
its look that it has already captured the hearts of many of the shows fans.
I believe that a release of this showpiece prop, perhaps to coincide with the
release of the film, would sell huge for you.
A Science Fiction weapon destined to be a classic would indeed make for a
Master Replica.
Best regards,
Rick Bilyeu

So remember to send 'em an email of your own.
LicenseIdeas@MasterReplicas.com
Best,
Rick

Gorean,
Who isn't hot for "Vera"?:) Come to think of it, how about Jayne's entire arsenal wall?
Hopefully enough folks sent off an e-mail to Master Replicas so that they might be pondering replicas from Firefly. We'll see.

I would definitely go in for a replica, but I would rather have a working model. :p

Jayne's wall is a bit like mine, except I have more guns.

Jayne's revolver is indeed based on a LeMat revolver from the mid-1800's. It has a 9-shot cylinder plus a 16-guage shotgun barrel under the pistol barrel, but they don't use it in the series. The only real modification to it is that it has an accessory rail mounted on the top of the barrel and the original loading lever has been removed. When he fires it in the intro to "Our Mrs. Reynolds" you can see all the smoke it coughs because it uses black powder. Jayne's other pretty, Vera, is as far as I can tell, an extremely modified AK-47 with the stock removed, lots of accessory rails, an Aimpoint red-dot scope and a custom muzzle. Apart from Mal's gun, I can tell you what any of the other guns are or are based off of from Firefly. P.S. Only the replica, non-firing, LeMats are $49. A real one runs about $900 or so.

Ooooo!! A LeMat huh? Yeah...I wonder if it would withstand modern cartridges and powder? I'm not big into black powder guns, but my wall does look a bit like Jaynes...

Vera seems a little long to be a standard AK base...I think, in fact that it may be a Saiga 12 hiding underneath all that stuff. Look at the size of the magwell! Oh, and check out my post about Vera in the Episode forum. there's a link to my Saiga-12 theory.

Not a lot of money for a project like that though. Did you see how much it cost's to get a Mare's Leg '94 like Zoe's/Steve McQueen's?

If you want vera, just get as many mods as possible for a G36C or K with a ris system. Also if you want the gun the feds use [then mal and zoe] it too is a G36k Large foregrip with the G&P Scope mounted in the handle. I have a similar gun. A ton of the guns on FF are basic mods off of real [20/21st] steel.

If you want to see what I'm talking about do a search for 'airsoft.' or you can go to tons of different sites like www.quantumairsoft.com or
http://www.airsoftatlanta.com

Zoe's gun is called a Maxi. Which is an old western 'saw'd off' 30/30 lever. And I thought Jane's gun was a Raging Bull, which is a targus. It has a rail on the top to mount the sight.

Mal's is a resin mod from what appears to be a colt single action army, only with a new center piece.

That would be nice, but you can't buy a real G36. Even if I could, it'd be cost prohibitive. I am dead certain that Vera is a Saiga-12. Check out this link: Jim Boland built this gun for the movie "Showtime". Look familiar?

Not to "out-gun" you here, but Zoe's peice is DEFINITELY the Mare's Leg, a cut-down Winchester model 92 used by Steve McQueen in "Wanted Dead or Alive". Originally chambered in .45 Colt, but you could easily build one in .30-30. Check out this article on it.
http://www.wildwestmerchandise.com/article.htm

Jane's big revolver is a Raging Bull as you said, but the company that makes it is called Taurus (like the bull). They make many good revolvers.

And last, but not least, Mal's pistol, look's like it's based on the revolver half of the LeMat shotgun/revolver shown here:
http://johno.myiglou.com/lemat.htm
This gun predates the Colt Single Action Army by several years. If you check out the SAA's frame and grip angle you'll see that it can't be the basis for Mal's gun. You're definitely right though..they replaced the cylinder in Mal's pistol with....something.

Oooo, y'know what? You could be right about that. The lever loop looks a little different than the one in "Wanted Dead or Alive". Who is Maxi Randall, btw? I'm showing my ignorance here.

When you say you don't know if the body works on the Saiga, do you mean that you doubt it would actually function? Or are you saying that you don't think the gun from "Showtime" is Vera?

Oh yeah...belated apologies for TOTALLY hjacking the Mal's Pistol thread. Does Master Replicas do custom work?

Well...the core AK parts would be easy enough to get, whether you want real, airsoft, or just replica, AK parts are really common. (If it IS a Saiga, then you'd actually need a longer rarer core to be totally correct, but I think close enough counts).

The really tough part looks like all the "fluff" they added, and the muzzle brake, handguards and stock. That all looks like custom machining...you'd either do it yourself, or maybe Master Replicas or some place would do it for you out of plastic. It looks like a LOT of machining work though.

Jayne's revolver is really a LeMat. If you watch the Ariel episode in the intro where he's cleaning his gun, he has the barrel removed and then replaces it back onto the receiver. Also, you can see the shotgun barrel under the pistol barrel whcih is only, and I mean ONLY, present on a LeMat. Also, a modern revolver is double-action, meaning pull thr trigger and fire but a LeMat is single action which means you have to cock the hammer to fire it, which Jayne does in Our Mrs. Reynolds when fighting the bandits with his "wife". As for the Saiga-Vera theory, yes the magazine is large, but that is just a body cover over an original magazine, it's not that hard to do. Also, the top of the receiver of Vera has reinforcing ribs along the top every inch or so which I'm pretty sure is not present on a Saiga shotgun.

Are you referring to the greyish bare metal reinforcing ribs across the top? That whole section appears to be a machined add-on that has nothing to do with the base gun. If you look closely at the receiver, you'll see that the core AK receiver is still black IZMASZH factory paint.

If you're referring to the kind of reinforcing ribs found on some AK dustcovers well, you're right that Saiga's don't have those, but I'm damned if I can see well enough to make them out in the pictures.

My main reason for thinking that Vera is a Saiga-12 either IS or looks exactly like, the weapon used by Robert DeNiro in "Showtime". You can see the letters "SAIGA-12" engraved on the side of the black receiver (trunion). Some differences were added for Firefly: a big muzzle brake, the optic mounted on top, and the cartridges held in the stock, but the rest is pretty much the same.

You're right...that is not a Saiga magazine in the "Showtime" pics...I can't see the one on Vera very well.

Mal’s Gun was completely fabricated in the computer and CNCed in wax and cast in brass, a modern revolver trigger and cylinder were used inside. It never had a base of a real world firearm from the past.

And another thing you might get with an MR replica is this…Mal’s series gun is not being use in the film, a new gun with some notable difference, but the same basic design was constructed for the movie.

So if a MR replica is made it most likely won’t be the TV version.

Not a bad idea though Rick!

Here’s a very blurry picture of the inside of the TV gun. The pic was very small so it blurred when I enlarged it, but you can still see the revolver inside.

as i understand it your coment isnt exactly right

firstly the gun did fire they used a modern fire arm so there was less liklely hood of missfires etc they cut the handle off and replaced it with an oldy worldy looking grip then the rest of the gun was just cladding over the top of the gun rather than compleatly makeing it in the computer
also i have been a product model maker for the past 10 years and you hardly never machine stuff in wax more likely they machined in eather prototyping board or a block of resin then cast it and got a wax out of the mold to make a brass casting from the lost wax process.

also whilst i realise my replica isnt 100% acurate and i have only seen the film once so i cant be sure but mals gun looked pretty much the same now jaynes lemat i dont think showed up once
but again i have only seen the film once so you may well be right i know they chainged the ship slightly but nathan never said that they chainged the gun when i was talking to him about it

finaly with regards to master replicas yes they do some fine work but i find there normaly over priced and with so meny people makeing so meny fine replicas of his pistol why do you need a licenced very very expensive replica of mals gun when you can get a very good copy from a fan just like yourself that has worked so hard to make a very cool object
and i cant say for certain but chances are thet most of master replicas stuff is made in the far east for 100th the price they sell it for so i say keep the replicas for firefly in the hands of the fan prop makers
just my opinion you understand

You are misunderstanding what I’m saying, and I didn’t say that it didn’t shot or fire some kind of cartridge, and I did say they used a modern gun inside I even posted a picture of it.

What I’m saying is most people think that Mal’s gun as it appeared on the show was a modified old time 1800’s type gun.

The info on how it was made was posted on the ASAP board some months back from the website of the manufacture of the gun for the series.

The gun for the movie is quite different in many small details, especially the lower area below the side rods see pic:

Until the movie is released I can’t show the new Serenity gun in it’s entirety but this is just one of the changes.

no worrys it was just the fraise "the gun was "compleatly" fabricated in the the computer " and to say that they used the triger and cilinder to my mind dosent realy say that they used pretty much all of the gun and clad it but its all just sumantics as i said it was only my opinion and you do seem very very well informed! my hats off to your info gathering skills
also i have to say that i was more looking for reavers for a costume than mals pistol
