HISGOODGIRL

Just a gal out on the rim writing tales.

I've been on the lookout for something like the German army surplus jacket Jayne wears in the series "Serenity" pilot episode. The coat can be seen during and just after our BDH's encounter with Badger, as well as in some other episodes.

Lo and behold, while cleaning out my parent's house, I found one exactly like it, right down to the fur trim around the neck, except it has no patches or insignia, etc.

Can anybody tell me about or post pics of the patches on Jayne's coat? I'm studying screencaps and will re-watch the show in hopes of getting a good view, but figured, what better place to ask than this community?

Thanks for any help and info you can offer.

Hey. Not sure if this is what you're looking for but if you go to www.browncoatpatches, there's an item down the bottom of the page with some Jayne patches.

Just outta curiosity, are you referring to Jayne's coat from the Series, or Serenity? The reason I ask is that I have an fantastic copy of Jaynes coat/shirt from the Maidenhead Bar scene, with accurate copies of all patches, and badges! I would be willing to let it go! Let me know, and I can provide pictures!

Regards!

Thanks, folks. James, I was referring to the German army surplus coat Jayne wears in the series, not the BDM.

After a lot of research, I've concluded that the patch is a prop patch based on a German Police patch, but modified is some details. Thanks to ArtemisPrime, who provided a helpful screencap, I tracked down the actual patch Jayne's was based on and can now embroider a copy to sew on my own bigbadman's coat!

Could you please just make it stranger? Stranger. Odder. Could be weirder. More bizarre. How about uncanny?

Any chance you might tell us where you tracked down the patch?

I am making a collection of Firefly/Serenity patches.

Thanks in advance!

As I noted, a friend made me a pretty good screencap, and I was able to see that the word at the top of Jayne's patch was "Polizei" and knew that was German for "Police", so I started Googling images for German police patches. Of all that I found, and they have different ones for each state, the patch for Rheinland-Pfalz turned out to be the closest.

You can see the patch Jayne's was based on at www.patch.no. Click on "Police" on the menu to the left and another menue will open. Click on "Germany" and scroll way down to the correct state. The site's a little flukey so be patient.

Even so, it's clear from the screencap that the one on the prop coat is a hand-embroidered variant. The top two-thirds of Jayne's patch is exactly the same as the police patch, but the bottom third of Jayne's patch differs.

I don't know how to insert images on this site but you can e-mail me at Lumenea@aol.com and I'll send you images of the screen cap and the police patch.

Howdy again, James!

I'd like to see some pics, if you wouldn't mind. If I do want to go ahead & take it off your hands, how would I pay?

Thanks again,

No problem on the pics! If you can give me a tutorial on how to post them here, I'll do it! Otherwise, let me know your email address, and I can get them to ya there! I would either take a US Postal Money order or Paypal!

Here is some more info on the shirt:
The Resume shirt is a British Army General Service shirt size 47/48 (about a man's XL). The buttonholes have been enlarged and the buttons have been replaced with BDU buttons. The sleeves have been cut-off at about the elbow so they can be rolled up (sleeves are not hemmed). The pins and epaulets are accurate US military, and the patches are accurate reproductions of the screen used patches. I wear size 16 1/2 dress shirt, and XL t-shirts, this shirt fits me fine!

Pictures were sent to your email address several days ago! Do you still want the shirt? Please let me know, so I may offer it to someone else if you don't want it!

Ni hao, jtbthird!

I was wondering, do you know what the epaulet on the shoulder is (Navy, Airforce, whatev?) and what the pin is on the pocket (looks like Airborne maybe?)?

I have a replica shirt I am making myself, and those are the last 2 details I have troubling me.

Thanks for any insight you can provide!

Black with gold stripes U.S. Army ROTC corporal epaulette . He only wears one... not both...

the pin is a "Friends of the Navy Seals" pin. Their official designation is "UDT Badge Gold mini"

You want the 1 inch by 1.5 inch mini gold tone.

The Army patch is a 1948-1951 SERGEANT FIRST CLASS COMBAT CHEVRON

Oh hey -- Free soup.

In the better-late-than-never department...lol! I fabricated a replica epaulette, but now that I know what the real one is, I'm going to hunt it down. Thank you very much. I did get the army patch and the pin (btw - the pin I am referring to is on the pocket, not the collar). Once I have the epaulette, the shirt will be completely complete! Thanks again!
