Need help with line breaks for fanfic

I just posted my first fic to the Blue Sun room, a collection of haiku, and I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to prevent it from double-spacing everything to keep the haiku couplets together. I had to use hyphens to separate the couplets.

I work in MS Word...is there a special way to save it so that I can get lines to stay together and have them separated by paragraphs? Other authors have seemed to master this.

Any help would be appreciated, so I don't have to have fics that look ugly.

Welllllll just a thought, but when I have had to write LONG articles.... Just write it and do not use your return key. Just keep typing away. Then when you copy paste, the web site software will make the returns where they need to be to fit the page. Only time you use the return key is for new paragraph.. Then add spaces for your indent.

The fanfic form takes HTML code. Run all your text for each haiku together on a single line and put a "br" where you want the line breaks to be. But instead of quotes put the br with a left arrow < in front of it, and a right arrow > behind it.

Help! Perhaps I'm still not quite understanding here. Does this mean that if I want to write a story, say:

Mal ran into the next room, panting. "Where did Saffron go?" he asked excitedly.

Wash stopped shoveling the tasty soup Saffron had made into his mouth long enough to reply, "If you see her, I want this recipe."

Does this mean that I have to use all sorts of
tags when I want to double space between the two characters talking above? I've noticed other writers that easily keep long paragraphs together and they are spaced correctly.

Does this also mean I should save whatever I write in MS Word in an html format? Help!

umm, paragraphs stay together so long as you don't hit enter between sentences in MW word .doc format.

As to guildsister's suggestion, I haven't tried it.

I don't know for sure that saving a document in html format would help with the blue sun room since you just cut and paste text rather than uploading a document. You can go back and edit your haiku in several ways and see what works.

I know, which is why I couldn't figure out if I was doing something wrong. I couldn't understand why when I did a simple cut and paste the lines automatically double-spaced and I lost all my paragraphs. *sigh*

If you send me your email address (do it by private message by clicking on my profile name), I'll send you a sample of the code you need to do this--can't post it here as *this* form also reads HTML and it makes the code I write invisible. It's a catch-22 sort of thing.

You are pasting plain text into the fanfic form, not an HTML word doc. Just very, very basic HTML codes inserted will let you accomplish most formating you'll want/need.
