For all the site vets out there:
- i am a new member of this site, and i haven't had a chance to read much fan fiction, and i was wondering what the general reaction would be to fan fiction that was set in the Verse but not necessarily related to Firefly and Serenity's crew. I would enjoy writing some fan fiction, but am somewhat leery of interfering with the characters as set - afraid of getting them wrong, mostly. So, are people on this site or the fans in general acceptant of unrelated fiction?

Welcome to fff.net! We're glad you're here.

*On "Non Firefly fiction", I guess the answer is a little vague. Most readers are very tolerant, and will accept most storylines so long as they are well written and well thought out. Some readers will only peruse fic that is on strict canon lines...exactly as Joss laid out the 'Verse.
You can't please everyone; you shouldn't try to.

I would say make sure to include many things that will be identifiable to Firefly fans throught your fic, and get yourself a Beta (someone to proof your work for spelling, grammar and tone.)

With that said...you admitted you haven't read much fan fic. You really should check out the threads which point out some of the best of the best here at fff.net.

I agree with Mavoureen, if it's well written, people will read it. Be warned though, there are a lot of people that recognize canon only.

I say if you get caught up in your story, lost in it so to speak, then it's worth sharing. But tie it into the Firefly verse.

I'm of the same mind as you, writing for original characters is way too intimidating.

You might find people who will read a story set in the Firefly verse but not surrounding the characters we all know and love.

It's not my thing, but I'm sure some people will read it.

Definitely get a beta reader, as they are more help than a lot of people realize.

I can understand feeling that it is hard to get the voices right for our BDHs,
many writers end up just repeating things they said on the show...which sounds odd because most people don't say the same thing over and over using the same words each time...

by 'set in the Verse' do you mean like on Ariel or including Badger or something?
Personally I would love learning more about Niska's home life (particularly after he ruined his reputation by running away)

so anyway, I'm saying: go for it!

I'm happy enough to read non-Canon work if it's well written and interesting. I've even considered writing non-Canon myself, although I'm going to stick with canon first!

I'd pretty much go with the opinions expressed so far. Be sure to label your fic well so people know what they're going to read and aren't left wondering when Serenity is going to show up.
