Okay, I have an idea to do a virtual season 2 of Firefly.

Basically, the season will follow the story arc from the BDM, except in far more detail than we were able to see from the movie. There have been a lot of lament that the movie packed an entire season worth of plot and squeezed them into 120 minutes. Here is a chance to recreate what the Firefly season 2 would have been like have the show been allowed to continue.

Like the TV show we can have different writers for each episode, so it will be a collaborative effort.

Anyway it's just an idea to see if there are any interest out there, and feel free to add any suggestions in this thread.

I have some ideas. They have to break the bad news to Wash's parents. River gets addicted to a drug that makes her lucid. I got lots of crazy ideas about the Unification Wars, the earth that was, and the building of the new earths.

I was looking foward to backstory on Shepard Book,
but I think season 2 if it happens ought to include.

Some new charaters to fill the voids left by wash and book.

Perhaps, some revelation of books history, maybe tied into some kind of abbey investigation to his death.

I think Inara would need a new purpose to be on the ship, since she likely will be kicked from the guild for aiding the crew in thier movie adventure.

Just some of my ideas for now..

No don't have it continue after the film. Have it continue straight after S1. I also hope it is script based, my interest would just got *plop*if it was prose.

My thoughts exactly. Joss has said that the film was the super compact form of season 2 so I would love (and I think this was the original idea) to expand the story line of the film, but that doesn't mean that we can add things like more Book and Inara history ect.

My idea is this, we take the film, we list the events that we know must happen, then we fill in any ideas that we have about other characters. Maybe we do this as a group, maybe we each take a character or a story line and we fill in the time line in a little more detail. We could use the comic books too, I haven't read them yet (where do you find them? I've looked all over.) but I understand they fill in some of the time gaps.

Then once we have a timeline that everyone likes we split it up into 20 episodes or how ever many we want to do (I think between 19 and 23 is a standerd season, something like that) and we assign the eps to different writers. We then post them in the order in which the would show on TV. I do think that we should have the time line first though (even if its not very detailed) because it might get a little hard to know where to stop and finish otherwise. But I've never done this before so there may be a much better way to work it.

These are just some thoughts, I'm sure ya'll have ones that are just as good and better. :) I hope we can get this rolling, I think it'd be great fun. :)

I see your idea, to flesh out a good season 2 is should have seeds of some ideas for season 3, so the story has continuity.

Also, the fact that good shows like firefly, family, farscape... etc. are canceled and it takes fan based marketing to get it going again, tells me the sad state tv is in.
I dream of the day when fox, nbc, cbs, and abc are not running the show.

Exactly. I think we could do both.

no kidding. it really boggels the mind. Someday we'll take over and all will be right with the world. It is encouraging though that fans have made as big of an impact as they have, i.e. The Peacekeeper Wars and Serenity, it's cool to know we can change things, even if it's a long time comming.

I know but something about having spend time being a movie/tv promoter in my spare time makes me upset.I mean NMJ.
I have enough work to do trying to get through my senior year of engineering.

I'm looking foward to when the internet mafias will open up enough bandwidth for internet broadcast "tv". MAke tv distribution much cheaper then shows can have a longer time to prove themselves. Maybe on demand tv free.

It would give something 'visual' fit in with the style (we've already got comics) and shouldn't be too hard todo with all the talented folks around here.

So, to clarify... What you're looking to do is spec out what the Miranda-Reaver-Operative story arc could have been if Whedon had done it as a 22 episode story arc (that's the standard) rather than a 2 hour movie?

I'm down with that, but want to make sure I'm on the right page here.

If we're going to do this right, we need to first consider the end of season 1.

Including the two part pilot, we have 15 out of 22 episodes for season 1.

The comic book miniseries from Dark Horse is clearly the season 1 finale (and, therefore, should be required reading for any serious attempt to figure out how season 2 would've played out). It shows us how Book and Inara leave the ship (GREAT scenes both), as well as tying up a few other story arcs.

If we assume that would have been 2 hours, that brings us to 17/22 season 1 episodes. I don't think the 5 "missing" episodes would have been integral to the plot (in fact, the miniseries implies that it's been "business as usual" for a while), except perhaps, to introduce Haven so we have a reason for Book to go there when he leaves the ship.

My thoughts on Season Two include the following:

1) Season 1 is pretty much "the year they work for Badger." Season 2 would then be "the year they work for Mingo and Fanty."

2) Given the way JW does things, we wouldn't see more than the briefest hints of the overall year story arc until "act 2" (around episode 8 or 9), so the major stuff (such as the Reavers and the Operative) probably wouldn't be introduced until then (at the earliest).

3) I could see the overall arc of the first act (roughly episodes 1-8) going something like this: Having cut ties with Badger, Mal now tries to work for Mingo and Fanty. But Mal and his crew, they're trouble, so first they're going to need to prove themselves with a few big jobs. We might even get recurring opposition in the form of another crew that works for M&F (possibly even the crazy folks from the first issue of the comic).

4) Throughout this, the crew begins to use Haven as, well, a haven. During the first season, Serenity is their home, but they start to develop a second home. It's also a good way to keep Book as a recurring cast member.

I could even see story arcs where one or more of the crew leaves for a little while. Say, for example, there were some sort of outbreak on Haven, leading to Simon volunteering to stay there for 2 or 3 episodes.

Maybe there's even someone there to make a Simon-Kaylee-??? triangle(because if those two aren't going to hook up until the finale, SOMETHING needs to be done to spice things up).

Clearly, though, we have to care about the folks of Haven and see that Mal and crew care about them, so when the Operative's men slaughter lay waste to the place in act 3, it means something.

5) I could easily see Inara being largley absent from the series for the first act. I can also see her being attracted to the Operative. He represents everything that Mal isn't, which is what she SHOULD be attracted to.

I suspect that, had the story been done as a series, we'd've had 5 episodes where the Operative is just hanging out with Inara, having political and philosophical discussions so that she (and we) can see just what an intelligent, clever man he is.

6) Ideally, THAT is how I'd've liked to have been introduced to the Operative, by the way. Consider this:

We first see him as a client of Inara's. Although it's a job, she's clearly attracted to him because he's so intelligent, insightful, etc.

It's only after we get used to the idea of him as potential competition for Mal in a romantic sense that we see a version of the opening of the movie and realize exactly who he is.

And then we realize exactly how clever he is and how carefully he's been weaving his web, and preparing to ensnare the crew of Serenity. He becomes chillingly efficient, but, to Inara, still not entirely unattractive, since he has the conviction that Mal seems to lack...

7) The whole Miranda/River-goes-crazy-due-to-subliminals would've taken a lot longer to play out: a line here, a scene there... stuff that we realize the truth of only in retrospect. Joss is good like that.

Well, that's certainly enough for one post. I should probably get back to work now...

Wonderful ideas!! Thanks for posting!!! I thought I'd eat up some board space and reply...

Quote:

Exactly. This gives us plenty of places to go and trouble to get into while we are setting up the rest of the story arc. So would the final job (where the Reavers atack) come somewhere in the middle (8 or 9) of the season?

:) I guess this answers the above question...duh...

I think this would be a great way to start writing too because it would give us a chance to do more "solo" writing. A chance to get the feel for format and story without having to worry so much about making sure that the time line and story arc are going in the right place. A bit like having training wheels if you will.

Quote:

Love love LOVE this! I was thinking the same thing but you've mapped it out better than I could. I'd really love to see some depth in the Jayne/Book relationship and this would be a great place to do that (for example, fleshing out the whole cigar thing which I think is one of the coolest things in the film)

Quote:

Oh the angst! :) Again, you've hit the nail on the head. This is a great idea. We have no idea how long the Operative is at the traininghouse before she Wavs Mal. You could get some really great stuff out of her character here. A chance to see many different sides that we've just glimpsed before. Do we want to try to flesh out some more of her past as well?

Quote:

7) The whole Miranda/River-goes-crazy-due-to-subliminals would've taken a lot longer to play out: a line here, a scene there... stuff that we realize the truth of only in retrospect. Joss is good like that.

I think this will be the hardest part, not being JW, the man himself. But what fun to try to break the puzzle apart before putting it back together. I also think that her spiral down into maddness could be an important part of this season, the darkness is eating away at her brain. She is getting worse and worse, Simon can't stop it, It's freaking everyone else out, no one knows what to do...except maybe...Book? hmm. ;) I dont know. I do think it would be fun to play with and it gives the moment of release and renewal on Miranda a little more depth.

Anyway. I guess I really could have skipped all that and just said bravo and I'm on the same page, or at least I'll second your ideas. So now the question is where do we go. I think we've got several really interested people, and a firm begining grip, what is the next step?

Ah, I misunderstood, I thought the topic creator wanted this to be post Serenity. My ideas, the new River hunters, the earth that was, fits in better post Serenity, although I could come up with some ideas for what happens between the show and the movie. I think it would be interesting to expand more on the Unification War, how the war was fought, what kind of tactics each side used, and it would be nice to explore the dark underworld of the core worlds, maybe a cult.

Hi guys, thanks for all the responses!

I'm glad so many of you liked the idea. I really hope we can get this thing going. I'm going to see about geting a domain/website set up, anybody here good with web designing? I'm hopeless when it comes to visual stuff like that.

Anyway a lot of what I've thought on this overlaps with the thoughts on the thread already so I won't repeat them.

In addition to what has been mentioned these are somethings I'd want to include:

1) Giving Mr. Universe a real introduction.

2) Running into the underground group that helped Simon brake River out, with flashbacks that expand on how River was rescued. 1 and 2 could tie into each other, perhaps this underground guy introduces them to Mr. Universe, perhaps Mr. Universe provided some of the hacking technology that enabled the break in?

3) Fun things with recurring villains. Saffron?

Mainly I really want to expand on the character of the Operative. There is so much to him that can be so fascination, but because the length of the movie format that Joss wasn't able to explore.

Keep coming with the good ideas.

I think that it would be cool to do a story where the underground wants Simon to do something for them. I know that Simon paid the underground to help him but I'm thinking that the underground is like the mafia, and since they did Simon a favor, they're expecting a favor in return. Plus it would be cool if the underground has ties to a cult based on one of the Core worlds. Plus I have an idea for a story arc where River gets addicted to a drug that makes her lucid.

I think this idea is gorram shiny. I want to be on board with it, but not sure writing is the way for me to do it. Maybe as some sort of editor/creative consultant who makes sure the "whole" arc is slowly played out?

I think that having a strong underlying story is crucial, I want to emphesize on thing, every episode of Firefly worked as a stand alone. I think if we can mimic this manner of telling the story, but remaining episodic and not a soap opera, so much as possible. A few two parters here or there, I'm thinking, or, at the very least, making sure we have some episodes thrown in that break from the storyline (think X Files, Deep Space Nine here).

I'd also like to see things tie into the first season, for example.

The Lassiter. We've all kinda been assuming it paid for the upgrades to Serenity, but I think a humor-based "we can't get rid of this thing" episode might be fun, sending the crew all over the place trying to unload the gun covertly.

The Heart of Gold. Who's up for a return visit? Maybe while Inara happens to be visiting? Sexual tension abounds.

Early. Did he die in space? Obviously the answer in my book is no, so he can be brought back. But how? Is he connected to the Operative?

The Reavers. How do they go from things you never see to big scary things? How do we do this without seeming sudden or cheesy?

Blue Sun. Hey, remember them? Obviously the Blue Hands were the "big bads" of season 1, and now they're gone [comic books], but what about this huge corporation that makes River freak out?

Onward!

I agree. A few other additional Season 1 events to consider, in my own opinion, are these:
1) At the end of "Objects in Space," Serenity is heading to New Melboune to drop off Inara. While there, Inara's departure is delayed when events happen that provide a clue to her past; revealing to Mal that her motives for leaving aren't selfish.
2) The crew are finally able to pawn off the Lassiter. But after buying a new HoverMule, they lose the rest of the cash (either via Niska, or lost while escaping from Reavers).
3) The events of the mini-comic series (entitled "Those Left Behind").

Quote:

1) Season 1 is pretty much "the year they work for Badger." Season 2 would then be "the year they work for Mingo and Fanty."

2) Given the way JW does things, we wouldn't see more than the briefest hints of the overall year story arc until "act 2" (around episode 8 or 9), so the major stuff (such as the Reavers and the Operative) probably wouldn't be introduced until then (at the earliest).

Again, I agree. In the comic's 1st issue, the opposing crew, led by a man named Ott, does indead work for Fanty and Mingo.

Other events throughout Season 2 would be (as more than one person has already mentioned above), the introduction of Mr. Universe, showing the Underground movement. I also think we would've seen the return of Jubal Early; his ship DID turn around at the end of the episode. I think we would also discovered that Simon knew from the start that River is psycic; minor acting subtleties from the show seem to confirm this.

Quote:

7) The whole Miranda/River-goes-crazy-due-to-subliminals would've taken a lot longer to play out: a line here, a scene there... stuff that we realize the truth of only in retrospect. Joss is good like that.

I believe that the Operative would've also persue other ways of finding the crew of Serenity, not just the subliminal messages. Maybe hunting a certain red-headed con artist so she'd seek refuge with them? Can you imagine Saffron joining the cast? Not to mention "why?" I think she had good chemistry with the others during Firefly, and I feel that Joss may have intended her to be an additional character in the closing events of Season 2. Even if the horrors of Miranda forced Saffron decide to assist the others, I doubt she would've stuck around too long after the final battle, and went her seperate way (after, of coure, doing something to the ship. Mal: "What was that?")

Someone had earlier mention possible events in Season 3 (next movie sequel?). I think we'll see the aftermath of the message, and see the other students from the "Acadamy" to oppose River; but the primary story arc will be about Inara's past. Joss has mentioned in interviews that the latter is what he'd like to explore for a possible sequel.

I'm babbling again. Those are my opinions and I'll shut up.

Later

It is possible that Simon has troubles with the underground. Somehow I doubt that the underground helped Simon out of the goodness of their hearts. I think that the underground had their own plans for River, she is a very valuable individual, and perhaps underground never intended to give her to Simon and wanted to use her for their own schemes. I think the only reason why they told Simon that River was in trouble was so that they could gain access to his resources. Maybe some decent members of the underground thought that taking advantage of Simon like that was wrong and helped him escape with River. It would explain why River arrived on Serenity in stasis, she wasn’t smuggled out of the Academy in stasis, she was smuggled out of the underground base in stasis. The crew coming into conflict with the underground would also explain why Mal was so unhappy with Simon in the movie.

EXQUEMELING

Yeah, this sounds like a top idea! When can I read the script for the next episode!?!

For those of you looking for a proper introduction for Mr. Universe, read the Serenity novel, as it turns out, he is a contact of Wash's from pilot academy - it gives quite a bit of background to him and lots of plot ideas to work on/with too...

One thing that occurred to me while I was thinking about this thread was exactly how much do we use the movie as "canon"? The idea, after all, sort of a reinterpretation.

For example, "Firefly" seems to imply that Simon funded River's rescue but did not participate in it. In "Serenity," however, we see that he was her literal savior.

Personally, I like the TV show interpretation, because it allows some of the mystery to drag out a little further. I had two different ideas related to this:

1) When River starts to unravel because of the secret of "Miranda", Simon realizes that he needs more answers from the Underground, so he either tries to go after them himself (which likely involves him getting in way over his head and requiring rescue) or hires Mal and Co. to track them down.

2) Alternately, I had the idea that perhsp someone from the Underground realizes, to some extent at least, what's going on and acts as sort of a "guardian angel" to River, following her and the crew from a distance. Ideally, this would be done in such a way that the audience thinks that the guardian angel is actually "the Big Bad" for part of Act II (meanwhile, if we go with one of my other suggestions, the Operative is discussing politics, music, and art with Inara).

I could see the guardian angel character being someone who has secrets of their own and hooks up with the crew in the short term sort of filling some of the Book role. Also, as a minor point, it would be the guardian angel, but Simon, who knows "the safe word."

As mentioned, there is backstory for Mister Universe (and other thigns) in the novelization, but the question becomes what's the best place to work it in?

I completely agree with whoever it was who said that the most of the episodes should be stand-alones, but if we use "Buffy" as an example, as the story progresses, we'd see stories that tie together more strongly. For example, "Shindig" and "Safe" are essentially a loose story arc, and later episodes are tied together by the medicine from Arial and the Lassiter.

I'm seeing something like this:

ACT I (roughly Episodes 1-8): These are mostly stand-alones tied together by the idea of the crew trying to prove themselves to Mingo and Fanty (and possibly by visits to Book and Haven). Inara is largely absent and, if there there's any "Big Bad" it's a crew that Mal and Co. compete with (possibly Ott's band of misfits).

Our first run-in with the Reavers probably occurs near the end of Act I or the beginning of Act II, leading us to believe, mistakenly, that they are the "Big Bad."

ACT II (Episodes 9-16): By now, the crew is in good with Mingo and Fanty, but River is starting to unravel. We first meet the Operative and Mister Universe, but have no idea of the roles they'll eventually play. Again, these are largely stand-alone episodes, but might involve the Underground, a major job for Mingo and Fanty, etc. River's bar brawl on Persephone occurs somewhere near the end of this act.

ACT III (Episodes 17-22): This is basically the last half of the movie writ large, and unlike msot of what we've seen before, is pretty much one big story arc (consider the third act of most seasons of Buffy or Angel).

Basically, I could see an entire episode devoted to the rescue of Inara, an episode for the death of Haven, and the last 2 or 3 episodes are pretty much the journey to Miranda and then the battle at Mr. Universe's place.

Okay, so, enough with the ideas. Down to business. How are we going to do this? Who's in? Who's in charge?

If we're serious about this, I think it's time to start organizing rather than just throwing out ideas.

I certainly don't want to usurp anyone's power, but I'll volunteer right now to help organize things. Can I be, like, a head writer or somesuch? :)

Also, is anyone aware or another group working on this same concept? If so, we should hook up with them so we're not duplicating effort.

Anyone want to set a website for this? Is fireflyseasontwo.com taken?

Thoughts? Opinions? Who's in? And who wants to play producer?

Well I think you guys should stop yapping on an open forum and get to do to doing privately...could be spoiling it for people who just wanna read the series.

As for forums, you could just proboards. I love them, you can do anything with them.

I agree. I'm totally in. I've never done this before so I dont know how helpful I'd be in organizing but I'm willing to do anything that needs doing. :) I really would love to be a writer, and I'll do any other job that I can. I think we've gotten together some great ideas, I think we are ready to start! Lets get going! :)

Im in, in any way I can help. Now I must admit I probably found firefly/serenity later then most, but my questions is. How is Joss gonna feel about us using his characters and basic world without his permission? Or is he cool about fans using it. Also is this gonna be just a written season? Is it gonna be told third/first person, or through a new character? Or maybe we are gonna write it out script form. Or are we gonna do it graphic novel style, or maybe using flash ?

But however we proceed, Im in.

Okay, here's how it is: Lot of people seem to be interested, but no one is organizing yet, so I'm going to appoint myself head writer.

My job will be to organize the overall flow of the season (in concert with the other writers, of course), and also make sure that we don't make any major mis-steps (like generating episodes that stray too far into bad fanfic...).

For the record, professionally speaking, I'm an editor, and have also won writing awards, so I'm bringing some experience to this.

Here's what think we need:

WRITERS: If you guys look at my previous messages, you'll see that I have a lot of ideas on the overall season spine, but I have no desire to come up with stories to fill 22 episodes, so we need probably 4-8 staff writers (that will probably give most people 2-4 episodes each, which should be enough for folks to develop their own mini-arcs).

By the way, I think the following should be "required reading" for anyone who wants to participate: Every episode of "Firefly" (preferably with commentary as well), the Serenity mini-series (which wraps up season 1), and the Serenity novelization.

TECH FOLKS: I'd like two do two things here. First, we need a better way to communicate. Can someone set up a forum or something for us? I'm not particular tech savvy myself...

Second, we'll need a site for this. I'm seeing it as eventually looking like a virtual DVD set, wth special features, commentary, etc.

ARTISTS: Not sure how we want to do this yet (treatments, full scripts for every episode, etc), but I think it would be great to have whatever we write illustrated in some way (storyboards, etc).

RESEARCH: Is anyone else working on a project like this? Will Joss get mad? If the answer to either of these is yes, we need to rethink things.

OTHER FOLK: Anyone else who wants to participate and has something to provide. If nothing else, we'll probably need a small handful of folk to read everything to make sure we're not spiraling into madness.

OUR MISSION: To create a virtual "season two" of what the motion picture "Serenity" could have been if Joss had 22 episodes rather than 2 hours. "Here's how it might've been..."

Anyone who's interested in working on this project in a serious manner (because, don't get me wrong, it's gonna be WORK) can e-mail me at gwek@optonline.net and we can start organizing.

Sound good?

That could actually be done as a seperate download once the season has aired. A normal website would surfice, slong as it presents itself and makes clear what it is.

One idea I'd like to toss out -
I'm sure you guys are considering at least one episode to develop Book's past a little more. I've heard several discussions about how Book was probably an Operative at one time, which explains quite a bit. I'd love to see an episode exploring the parallels between Book and the Operative, his path to redemption, etc. To me this seems like one of the more obvious ideas, but probably a pretty good one, and since I didn't see it mentioned yet...

Myself, Gwek, and the others who have joined the staff are hard at work. Even though the original idea was to take the events of the movie and tell them over the course of 22 episodes, we have decided to first go back and finish out the final 7 episodes of Season 1. Our current release plan is to use this board to release our 7 Season 1 eps, and later move them to a 'Virtual Firefly' website, which is where we'll be releasing our Season 2 episodes (we'll also be posting them here, but by going to the website you'll get 'special features' such as opening credits and such).

Take my love
Take my land
Take me where I cannot stand
I don't care
I'm still free
You can't take the sky from me
Take me out to the black
Tell 'em I ain't comin' back
Burn the land and boil the sea
You can't take the sky from me
There's no place I can be
Since I've found Serenity
But you can't take the sky from me

To give an update, here's where we stand:

As our producer states, our fist order of business is to complete Season 1 with 7 episodes (bringing it to a full 22 episodes). The overall flow of this arc has been disussed, as well as the plots of individual episodes. Writers are assigned to all episodes, so we'll be seeing scripts pretty soon.

We've already settled on the overall flow of the first arc for the first eight or so episodes of Season 2, so as soon as S1 is finished, we'll roll right on into writing scripts for S2.

We'll discuss internally when you folks will start seeing something and digificwriter or I will try to post an announcement sometime in the new future.

Thanks for your support and continued interest, folks!

George (head writer)

PS: If any is interested in participating as a writer or artist, or has technical expertise in web design, please contact myself or digificwriter.

DRACOS

It's possible I could do a bit of writing for you guys.

Actually, I've been toying around with an idea I had for a fan-fic that would probably be in about four episodes in length. Possibly using it as a cliff-hanger for the end of season one and the first couple of episodes of seasson two.

Basically, the crew finds news over The Cortex that one or both of the elder Tams have died and Mal, in a moment of kindness, agrees to try to get them covertly to the funeral services. After the service, the crowd disperses and River and Simon aproach the grave with the captain and another crew member (undecided as to who) and its then that they all get nabbed by the Blue Hands and a bunch of Federals.

Opening up in the next episode we find Mal, Simon, and whoever else locked up in an Alliance prison awaiting trial while River has been put into extremely solitary confinement and is being shecked over and having early tests run on her to get put back into Mathias's program. The rest of the story-line focuses on the independent efforts of the incarcerated crew to escape and the free crew to try to break them out.

Dracos, in keeping with the way Whedon normally does things, we're trying to stick primarily with standalone episodes (with character and/or minor plot threads running through them).

If you're interested in writing for us, please send an e-mail to me and/or digificwriter so we can discuss (I don't necessarily hit this board on a regular basis).
