SUENOS

I'm currently a chef-in hiding. I spent six months last year at the CIA and decided that more schoolin was not for me. Now, I'm cooking for family and friends and developing recipes for this site. More coming soon, I know, I'm behind!

I've also got a graduate degree in history. I've done some teaching and some writing.

I'm also training for a half-marathon and working with dogs at our local no-kill animal shelter.

i DO aim to misbehave

occupationally, i currently work for a church as the Administrative/Technology assistant. that means i get paid pittance to do everything that needs to be done on the computer--database, weekly church bulletin, web site and the like. occasionally i even get to do fun things like artwork for production posters for the church, but only in between copy jobs. since they can't afford medical insurance for me i'll be moving on in the summer to something more secure--temporary work!!

what i really want to do is find a way to draw to my heart's content. unfortunately, submitting to art shows takes more money than i can spare right now. isn't that just the way?

I am a lab technician. I've had this job for five months, and I still feel like I have a lot to learn. I'm 24 and considering going back to school to get some chemistry degree. Of course, it would be nice if I could raise the money first.

I also have some aspiration for writing. I have no doubt that making a living as a writer is very difficult. However, I believe I have some passion for it. I enjoy the mysterious and frightening very much.

Like InvisibleGreen, I'm from Michigan.

Fascinating the different things people do!

I am the manager of a group that does mechanical payload design for communications satellites at an aerospace company in LA. We were assimilated about 3 years ago by the giant aerospace company which shall remain nameless.

I blame Robert Heinlein for this because I read "The Menace From Earth" in the 4th grade. Just call me Holly Jones.

I'm going to be unemployed in two weeks. I'm about to finish a temporary assignment at Amgen, a leading developer of pharmaceuticals for cancer patients (among others). In my spare time, I’m coding a fireflyMUD (you may have seen other treads about it) but that’s going pretty slow right now, seeing how most of my free time is taken up trying to find a new job. Speaking of which, does anybody know of any jobs in the greater Boulder, Colorado area that would want to hire me? Things are getting desperate.

Much obliged

Hey Channain, if you bring cheesecake we’ll hardly be starving artists anymore. What the hell, I’d rather have the cheesecake and a good debate over the title of “starving artist”. Come on over!

Xenarc- What’s theoretical zenoarchaeology? Sounds interesting. And thanks for the internet tip. I won’t get to have my dream box under the high way with a beautiful median view, but I think an ally will do just as well. I guess I can’t get too picky when I’m living in a cardboard box.

Oh, *wink, wink* any of you museum/archeologist/anthropologist types out there need an apprentice...especially since I just admitted that I don‘t know what theoretical zenoarchaeology is? *wink, wink*

hehe. it was really just a joke to bug the prof. Xenoarch. would be the archaeology of other species (not on/from earth). Hence the theoretical part... For B5 fans - it would be working for IPX.

Of course, with Firefly not having alien races I'd have to resort to some crime for a paycheck

CAPTAINZEE

I am a television news photographer at a network affiliate in Ohio. I've been here for 7 years, 14 years total in the business. I was real excited, for about 2 days, when I heard my network might be picking up Firefly.

Because of this, I have an idea how TV people view sci-fi and its fans. For example, at one station I worked at, we had been running Star Trek in syndication since 1969. It was an area tradition!

One weekend a major Trek convention came to town. Richard Hatch, David Carradine, Ethan Philips and John Billingsley were all there. No one in the newsroom could understand why we should go cover it, even though we were running Enterprise.

After a long rant, I was allowed to put down the camera and pick up the mic to play reporter and bring a freelance photographer to do the shooting. We spent an hour and a half there and it ran 20 seconds that night.

Never mind that the idiot who paints his '71 Winnebego the football team's colors gets a 2-minute feature!

My title now is Command Training Evaluator (hear the capital letters?) at the nuke field "a" school. I want to go back to being a mechanical engineer and eventually get into NASA with delusions of being an astronaut someday. I am looking to get out of the navy this fall and continue on my chosen path.

Kethryveris, (can I call you Kethry?) is your company hiring young mechanical engineers? I am at least as qualified to do engineering as any new grad and I have all my nifty naval leadership experience...

More importantly, how are you and Tarma getting along? (If you aren't a Mercedes Lackey junky, I am going to feel kinda dumb. 'Kethryveris' is a very rare name, though.)

Yes, I'm a Mercedes Lackey junky. Tarma and Kethry are my favorites. Finally, someone recognizes me!

Unfortunately, we've been laying off the last year or so. There hasn't been much new commercial satellite work in the last two years. But you never know it may pick up. I also sent you a private message (at least I think I did).

Okay, the 'cyte, finally weighing in here (I know you were all waiting with worms on your tongues [baited breath. Har-har.]).

I'm a shrink. Which is a technical term for clinical psychologist. Got my Psy.D. (that's Doctor of Psychology. Like a Ph.D., only it's a professional degree, rather than an academic one. Meant that I could write a 200-page dissertation on the implications of chaos/complexity/dynamic systems, and evolutionary theory to the theory and practice of psychology, without having to run any subjects or ANY statistics, thank the many gods [of pie and otherwise]. Whew. Yup. That was one sentence).

In private practice with a few other shrinks outside Philadelphia, and fighting a muhtha case of Post-Cancellation Stress Disorder (physician, heal thyself!!.

What a marvelous, motley montage of disparate demographics we are!

OK y'all, my turn to throw in my two cents:
I work at the local newspaper here in Austin (Texas, of course!). Working here going on eighteen years. Been in the printing/newspaper business all my adult life, thanks to my dad. Love my wife, two kids, Mac G4 Cube, assorted cars and pets, in that order.

I am beginning to believe we are kindred spirits.

My degree is Parks and Natural Resources, and I worked seasonal for the DNR. (Department of Natural Resources for those who don't know.) But there are no good permanent jobs in the DNR here in Iowa. Ya either have to kiss ass or be related to get anything good. And since I've no relatives in the field, and I am really bad at kissin' ass......

I now work for General Mills. I am a lab tech in their Quality and Regulatory Operation. I check foods before they go out the door to make sure they are good. (taste, vitamins, moisture, texture, pH, packaging, etc......)

I am one of those lunatic detroit cab drivers folks make jokes about.

It's a living, although the money sucks since you get really hammered on taxes, fees and the like.

But you get PAID to drive like a jerk, get to meet new and interesting (and even sometimes bizarre or freaky!) folks, and see more of the world than you might expect.

Having done this job for a while, I completely agress with Joss that some humans are a damned lot scarier than any aliens could EVER be - and a lot of them live in detroit...

Cos Iowa is sorely lacking in natural resources, unless you count dirt, soybeans and old people.

Oh, I'm bad! I'm bad! I know. I was born in Fort Dodge lived there and elsewhere (Des Moines-ish) til I was 12. I find that the Iowa in me never quite dies. It's always in there, wanting to make things have perfect 90 degree angles.

Allright here we go. Born Montauk, NY. Moved to Melbourne, FL to go to collage as a EE. Droped out in my senior year and went to work for a company makeing small run fast turnaround circuit board orders ( at ridiculous price premiums ). Got laid off so I moved to Seattle, WA with some friends. Now I work as a lab rat for Quest Diagnostics. Third shift, the job sucks but the pay is lousy. I also work part time for my X doing medical data entry.

Seems like we have a pretty diverse crew here. We should all get together and form our own colony somewhere.

Later,

ME.

Thank you for the correction. I've edited my old post. I was trying to remember it without going back to the fan-fic for fear I would lose what I had already written for my post. I gotta start remembering to just write my posts in word and copy them when I'm ready to post.

I'm from the Cedar Rapids area. Born, raised, and still not far from home. Not quite so hung up on the 90 degree thing around here. Have a bit less "flatland" and even a few real hills. (we really need a laughing smiley) But you are right, the area in the central parts is flat and square.
